Where to Eat and Drink in Tasmania

"An ice-cream shop perched on a harbor barge that scoops inventive flavors made with local milk and island ingredients—examples include pepperberry, lavender white chocolate and honeycomb crunch." - Regan Stephens Regan Stephens Regan Stephens is an award-winning freelance writer living in Philadelphia. This is one of Hobart’s must-try creameries. I’ve visited their outlet in Elizabeth Town and then in Hobart. They have a great selection of ice cream, and I particularly enjoyed the Lavender/Coconut flavour. They have happy hours from 4-6pm on Tuesday and Friday, 2 scoops for the price of 1 However, the staff here aren’t very friendly. Perhaps it’s because of the crowds, given its central location and popularity with tourists. This might not be the best approach for the food and beverage industry.

Oh wow! One of the best gelatos and ice creams I’ve ever had! The pepper berry and honey gelato was heavenly! Oh and the staff are incredible! They take coeliac disease very seriously - there were separate gluten free cones, and they’d prepare the ice cream separately getting it from out the back. Very friendly, each ice flavour I tried was phenomenal! My mum and I became addicted to this place when we were staying in Hobart! A must visit when in Tassie!

Came here nearly every day during my stay in Hobart and the surrounding areas. So many fun and unique flavors on rotation that deserve to be tried! I personally prefer sorbet to ice cream, given that I'm more into intense fruity tastes than the creaminess of ice cream. My preference of the flavors I tried are as follows (1 being favorite, though note that all were worth a try) : 1. Salted lime (sorbet) 2-3. Lemon or blood orange sorbet 4. Green apple sorbet 5. Raspberry and cherry ice cream 6. Salted caramel ice cream 7. Pepperberry and leatherwood 8. Lavender and white chocolate

Van Diemens Land Creamery, Hobart Tasmania: Everyone’s favourite ice shop at the pier. Awkwardly sandwiched between the fish and chip floaties, van Diemens has a never-ending line of gelato lickers. Flavours here are exotic – pepperberry, caramalised fig, gingerbread and other cool ones. #eatstylishtravelstylish

What a great ice creamery. I was unsure of what I wanted and tasted two flavours. The server recommended an alternative based on my choices and she was right! Highly recommend braving the queue for this beautiful treat.

I visited this ice cream place 2 times in a 5 days trip! The gelato tastes good with Tasmania ingredients and the view is stunning ~ There are not much desserts option…. Highly recommended the Lavender and white chocolate gelato and Pepper berry & Leatherwood gelato (unique). You can spot some sea lions 🦭 swimming nearby.

Google
2nd time visiting and enjoyed their ice cream again! I particularly liked the lavender flavour. This time it was lavender with coconut which was also nice but my all time favourite is lavender which was not available this time. Nevertheless all of their ice cream is nice and creamy and flavourful! Highly recommend!

If you are walking around Constitution Dock, you will see the queue for this punt. My advice? Join it. The ice cream is incredibly creamy and totally worth the wait. Insider Tip: They are super generous with tastings! You can try up to two flavours before you commit, which is a lifesaver because there are so many good options. Heads up on logistics: Since it's right on the water, parking is a nightmare during busy hours. I’d recommend parking further back in the city and walking down, or just treating this as your reward after exploring the harbour. 🛥️🍦

Yelp
Nice ice-cream place on top of the water. We could enjoy the ice cream while watching the rain on the dock. The flavor was great. They let you sample as well. I tried some flavors but eventually decided to go with the classic salted caramel flavor.

Yelp
True Tasmanian ice cream and gelato. Rich, creamy, popular. Climb aboard the floating shop. Check out the many flavors, mostly ice cream but some Gelatos too. Cone or cup; one flavor or two There are benches nearby to enjoy the moment.

Yelp
The flavor are incredible creative and the ice cream versions are nicely creamy. They do give free tastes but portions are small and highly portioned controlled to the gram! While I appreciate the local ingredients of honey and exotic flora, there seems to be more interest in the ingredients than what's in the final cup.

Yelp
There are lots of tourist spots in Hobart harbor, but this is different. It's a boutique ice cream shop that takes its name from the original name of Tasmania. The ice cream is made from locally sourced ingredients. You may not know what olive oil rosemary ice cream is, but if you are a hit adventurous you will find a new love for savory and creamy. The menu is simple. Pick cup or cone. A single orna double and then a flavor. It is like gelato. Rich and creamy. The honeycomb crunch gelato is wonderful for dairy free lovers. Other cool flavors include Cafe late, mango, lemon sorbet, chocolate hazelnut l, ginger, and a local apricot sorbet, salted lime sorbet, tropical sorbet and other lovely flavors. Overall this is a great stop for kids or the young at heart. Just be prepared to wait a hit for you delight!

Yelp
We've been staying at the Macq01 hotel down the street and every night in town, we decided to take a little walk after dinner. By the dock are several boats that have been turned into little "food boats." Some of them you can board them and buy something to eat while others you come up to the window and order take away. One of the boats is Van Diemens Land Creamery a little ice cream/gelato parlor that is frequently busy with a line going out the door. The ice cream here is delicious and often will feature local flavors (pepperberry, milo, etc). I always go with the cone and the waffle cones here are quite delicious. Remember to pick up your frequent ice cream card because after several purchases, you can get a free one! Appreciated their proximity to the hotel and the center of town. Is it the best in Hobart? Can't say that I have had enough ice cream in Hobart to make that proclamation but it definitely ranks highly!

Yelp
I think this is the best ice cream I've ever had and I've been around the world. Simply amazing. Unique flavors, creamy and vivid flavors. I'm going to dream about this for years to come.. any chance you'll make it to the US? I'd return to Tassie just for this delicacy..

Yelp
The restaurant is docked at the waterfront near the sidewalk. Throughout the week, I would notice crowds coming in and out of this barge especially in the evenings. On my last day, I decided to stop by after my lunch when there was no line. Although I was actually thirsty, my vacation mindset convinced me that ice cream would be a suitable substitute. Rather than order a single flavor, I decided to be different and chose two. The service from the employees was fast and friendly. That combined with the interesting flavors, I understand why this place gets the crowds it does.

Yelp
After the cluster known as our lunch place (Asian Gourmet), we knew better than to suffer through dessert there, so with time to kill before our tour bus picked us up in another hour, we walked the wharf and stumbled upon this place. I ordered a double of Lemon/Myrtle and Swiss Caramel/Macadamia and the hubs got Cherry Ripple. Super delish, perfect balance of sweet and creamy, without being cloyingly sweet! They've got a total of about 2 dozen different flavors of ice cream and gelato, so there's something to suit everyone!

Yelp
We decided to make a swing by Van Diemans at the waterfront once my wife spotted one of the floating docks was advertising 'ice cream and gelato' instead of fish (which is every other dock there). Given the holiday, there was a little bit of a line, but we didn't wait more than a few minutes before we had made it to the front. The ice cream selection certainly seemed to tend less towards gelato (nothing, to be honest, really screamed 'gelato' right off), but there's a healthy number of choices when it comes to ice creams and sorbets. We ended up sharing a two-scoop cup with leatherwood honey, along with maple & walnut. Both choices turned out to be winners; the honey had a nice, soft sweetness to it (perhaps too much - I would have prepared something that had a little more of the tart sweetness that honey on its own has), while in our other flavor, the walnuts were very lightly candied and provided a nice crunch, and the maple was very subdued and did not overpower the rest of the cup. I wouldn't say that the ice cream is going to blow you away, and you're not going to find flavors that are highly unique or that you would only find here (although the leatherwood variety of honey is something I have only encountered in Tasmania so far in my life). Nonetheless, it's a fun little shop to visit if you're in Hobart's waterfront, and the ice cream itself is still quite tasty. When it's summertime (like it is now), it's a handy spot to swing by and refresh yourself.

Yelp
Best ice cream in Tasmania! Try everything but I highly recommend the local flavours - Manuka Honey, Lavender, etc. These change constantly so enjoy while you can. Ice cream is well priced and there's seating inside for a great view of the harbour.
