Vanbrugh House Hotel

"How did it strike you on arrival?A character-rich hotel, filled with nice touches opposite the Oxford Union. Spread over two buildings dating from the 17th- and 18th-centuries, with parts of the façade designed by Sir John Vanbrugh (architect of Blenheim Palace) and a staircase by Nicholas Hawksmoor, inside it's unfussy, with exposed stone walls, grey-painted wood-panelling and smart chaises lounges. It feels good to be here. What’s the crowd like?A lot of smart visitors to Oxford seem to be staying here, older but not exclusively. It's a romantic spot and there seem to be regulars too: academics over for conferences at the university as well as the obvious tourists. The good stuff: Tell us about the rooms. There are 22 rooms, and though the standard doubles are fine it's worth paying a little extra for one of the five "superior rooms." They're bigger with an extra nice touch of having the bathroom hidden behind wood panelling. The Queen size bed feels huge, there's plenty of light, sumptuous extra seating and an overall elegant Georgian style feel. We’re craving some deep, restorative sleep. They got us?In spades. Egyptian cotton sheets, light fluffy pillows and extra blankets do the trick. How about the little things, like mini bar, or shower goodies. Any of that worth a mention? The free mini-bar is pretty nice with chocolates, soft drinks and posh crisps. There's tea from the posh Tea-Pigs brand, and fresh milk, not those little sachets you get that taste so off. Please tell us the bathroom won’t let us down. The invigorating shower totally wins me over, the bathrobes and slippers are definitely ones you want to pack in your suitcase and take home with you, while the toiletries from The White Company and other smart brands are good enough that you don't need to bring your own. Room service: Worth it?24-hour room-service is a great perk at the Vanbrugh, and an unexpected one. A filling pesto pasta for under £10 is a delight. Anything else we should have asked about?Location. It's all about location here which is as central as it gets in Oxford, but the best thing is the that despite that the hotel is surprisingly quiet. A bonus. Bottom line: Why will we love the Vanbrugh House? It's a true original." - Ramsay Short

Amazing boutique hotel. Booked a standard double and got upgraded to a superior double. The photos on the website don’t do it justice, the room is large with a lovely feature fireplace. Off the main room is a small sitting room with comfy chairs and another tv. The bathroom is out of this world with the biggest roll top bath and monsoon shower. The location was perfect and very central and walking distance to all the sights in Oxford. Recommend the Redbridge park and ride which was only a ten minute bus ride and dropped off 2 mins from hotel. Would highly recommended and will stay again when next in Oxford.

Perfect location for a short break in Oxford. Beautiful and charming building. Very helpful and polite staff. We stayed in a room on the first floor that was very well equipped. Very quiet at night and excellent continental breakfast.

Overall a good stay but a few things let it down. There is a large unit with the tv on at the foot of the bed leaving not much room to walk through, I have a bruise on my leg as I kept catching it when walking through, the wardrobe gave ample storage so don't seethe need for such a big cabinet there, there is no power point near the big mirror on the wall and no mirror on the desk by the power point, I had to use a small handbag mirror to dry my hair, not easy, there no drinking glasses in the room although when I asked for some the next morning they were delivered to our room. There was a safe in the wardrobe which was good.|The staff were all pleasant.|We opted for the continental breakfast but had I realised the concept of this would not have booked it, you have to prebook a slot and pick what you would like the next morning but it was all a bit basic and was all pre packed from the shop. I had a yoghurt with granola which was tasteless, felt we wasted money as we ended up going out for breakfast. |It was disappointing but not awful

We booked this as a one night escape and were so disappointed. Bed was rock hard so little sleep and no lie in. Breakfast arrived in a picnic basket. Porridge was in a cardboard pot to add your own hot water, croissant and pain au chocolates were cold. No fresh fruit on the menu. No lounge area or bar to relax in after a busy day. We went out to a lovely cafe for a fresh homemade breakfast. Good location a positive.

The only positive is the location. This hotel is extremely expensive for what it offers. It took my husband and I about 20 minutes to check in after a long drive because the woman behind the desk was so slow, which was aggravating. The room was old and looked absolutely nothing like the online photos. There were stains on the sofa and on the curtains that looked disgusting. The mattress was so hard it felt like sleeping on the sidewalk. I travel a lot, and I don’t consider myself very picky, but my god this bed was awful. As others have said, this hotel is very noisy.

After booking I called the hotel to enquire about the room. As it is a boutique hotel João talked me through the rooms available. He politely told me a guest had arrived and shortly called me back. He explained the rooms thoroughly and helped me select the room. As it was a special occasion so I requested some small decorations which he said he would arrange. We then continued to spend 15 minutes on he the phone as he we discussed how I could spend my stay in Oxford as I am new to the city. On arrival Elena was fantastic. Amazing service. Thank you to you both for helping me treat my partner and have a wonderful stay. Big clean spacious rooms and fantastic location.

All well except rooms: super tiny, uncomfortable beds, and dramatically hot. How can such a hotel lack an emergency aircon infrastructure is beyond me. My room was consistently at 30 degrees all night. I could not sleep at all.

Yelp
Love everything about this hotel! The staff is amazingly helpful (particularly the breakfast girl)! The breakfast itself was wonderful, with fresh-baked bread, croissants and even Nutella madeleines. And the room was splendid! The whole place has been refurbished, but still retains that Old World charm that us Americans love about coming to England. Highly, highly recommend this place!

Yelp
Incredibly disappointing stay. Remodeling and we arrived meant there was next to no service at all. Had to haul bags up stairs. Rooms are smaller than anticipated, and we were ready for small. No complimentary waters. But the worst is the air. No AC, room is at 26c and when we called the manager, she tried to say it was because we had something plugged in! One tiny fan circulating and I'm sharing a bed with my mom. The bed frames are quite hard on the shins as well. Would never recommend or stay here again.

Yelp
Wonderful little restaurant that is part of a hotel. I wasn't staying on the hotel but was just visiting Oxford and looking for a quiet place to eat. This is downstairs at the hotel and we were actually the only diners, since it was a rainy day and most tourists weren't walking Around. We did the modestly priced (about 13 pounds) three course lunch, and between us we had a fantastic smoked pigeon breast salad, a chilled asparagus and pea soup, perfectly prepared salmon and a spring salad with a soft boiled duck egg. For dessert, a rhubarb crumble (delish!) and an excellent cheese board. Good wine list too. The service was excellent and the environment is pleasant. When the weather is better, there are a couple of small outdoor patios. Highly recommended.

Yelp
Best hotel to stay at in Oxford. The rooms are clean, comfortable, and very cute. The staff are extremely friendly and helpful too. The property is quite small and I think only has 21 rooms to offer. Your stay comes with complimentary snacks in the mini bar and also included any of their breakfast options. Upon arrival, the front desk already had my check in packet ready to go because I mentioned at the time of booking I would be in late and they wanted me to be able to head for bed ASAP. Once in my room, they already had my checked luggage waiting in there for me along with a plates of chocolate covered strawberries for my birthday complete with a nice card. I loved the breakfast included. Great selections and good sized portions. I'm particularly fond of the soft poached egg over Scottish salmon and toasted English muffin. The complimentary snacks are great since I like to graze on food throughout the night. I swapped my stay at Malmaison to stay here instead since I was appalled by the service there and uncomfy beds :( I'm very happy that I made the switch!

Yelp
Just stayed at the Vanbrugh House Hotel again this week. Again the staff is extraordinary and super friendly. The location is perfect to walk to nearly Ashmolean Museum. I highly recommend this hotel.

Yelp
This was my second stay at the Vanbrugh House Hotel and was even better this time around! Very comfortable bed, good parking, small bath, good local facilities. Service was quiet, professional and accommodating.
