Today I went to the COVID-19 vaccine clinic held at the Vancouver Convention Centre, and I had a an absolutely HORRIBLE experience.
I entered the convention centre and went to line up in the foyer in order to enter the clinic. As I was in line, the man behind me started harassing me, standing mere inches away from me (he was nearly touching me -- he was that close) and making rude remarks, accusing me of cutting in line (I simply walked faster than him and took a different route and he was mad that I got to the end of the line before him). He was extremely rude and attempting to intimidate me, so I left the line and went to the nearest employee to report his behaviour. The employee (who turned out to be a security guard hired by the convention centre) said she would get the "vaccine clinic manager" to speak to me.
She came back with a man, who claimed to the be vaccine clinic manager, and I started telling him what had happened, and pointed to the harasser who was still waiting in line (he was glaring at me and making nasty faces -- or that could have just been the way he naturally looks). However, instead of LISTENING TO ME and DOING SOMETHING ABOUT THE SITUATION, he kept cutting me off, and threatened to deny me my vaccine if I didn't stop "making a scene". (So, a woman explaining how a man harassed her is "making a scene"? My damn uterus must be wandering around my body again!)
I walked away from the "vaccine clinic manager" and went to stand in line, now that the harasser was gone. A few minutes later I came to the first check-in point: a vaccine clinic employee at a table handing out disposable masks and telling you to sanitize your hands with hand sanitizer. I asked her a question, and the "vaccine clinic manager" marched up to the the table and told the employee to not let me in for my appointment because I was "making a scene". I hastily concluded my interaction with the employee and went to wait in the line to get into the clinic. As I was waiting in line, the employee who had handed me the mask started yelling something at me, which I couldn't hear as I was quite a distance away, so she came over and barked that if I make a scene, I won't be allowed to get my vaccine. OK... so reporting harassment, asking a question, and standing quietly in line is "making a scene" and a reason to deny me LIFE-SAVING MEDICAL TREATMENT, but following me and yelling at me is NOT?
Eventually I made my way into the clinic (I am surprised that the "vaccine clinic manager" didn't accuse me of "making a scene" when I momentarily couldn't find my ID -- which I had had in my hand but had dropped into my bag during the chaos of being harassed and accused of "making a scene"), and as I was quietly standing in line, trying not to cry over everything that had happened, the "vaccine clinic manager" and a woman, who told me she was the "vaccine clinic supervisor" marched up to me and and the "vaccine clinic supervisor" aggressively asked if "everything was alright" (ie. she wasn't asking me if I needed help, but was threatening me). I told her that I just wanted to be LEFT THE FUCK ALONE (not in those words, of course), and she said, in a condescending and threatening tone, "I'm just here to SUPPORT you". Yeah fucking right you're here to "support" me; you're here to make sure I don't "cause trouble" (which I wasn't in the first place). After telling her several times that I just wanted to quietly and calmly stand in line and be left alone, she said, "Oh, is that what you prefer, to be left alone?" JESUS CHRIST, what did I say FOUR TIMES?! The "vaccine clinic supervisor" and "vaccine clinic manager" finally walked away and left me the fuck alone.
A few minutes later, I got to the table where a clinic employee checks you in and fills out your vaccine card. He casually said, "How are you?" and I said, "Terrible! I was harassed!" He then asked me what happened with genuine concern, and it all came pouring out. The employee actually seemed to be LISTENING, so I said, "I know this has nothing to do with you, but I have to get it all out..." and I told him the story. He asked me for a description of the "vaccine clinic manager" and when I told him, he said, "That's not the vaccine clinic manager..."
