Vardzia, an extraordinary cave monastery carved into the cliffs of southern Georgia, is one of the country’s most remarkable historical and architectural landmarks. Dating back to the 12th century and built during the reign of Queen Tamar, this rock-hewn city served as a fortress, religious center, and refuge, showcasing the ingenuity and resilience of medieval Georgia. The sprawling complex includes over 600 rooms, interconnected by tunnels and staircases, as well as chapels, living quarters, wine cellars, and storage spaces. The crown jewel of Vardzia is the Church of the Dormition, adorned with exquisite frescoes depicting Queen Tamar and other religious and historical scenes. These murals are remarkably well-preserved, offering a glimpse into the artistry of the time. Set against the dramatic backdrop of the Erusheti Mountain and overlooking the Mtkvari River, Vardzia’s stunning location enhances its allure. Exploring the site feels like stepping back in time, with every corner revealing a piece of Georgia’s rich history. Accessible from the town of Akhaltsikhe, Vardzia is a must-visit for history buffs, adventurers, and anyone captivated by unique architecture. Whether it’s the breathtaking scenery, the intricate cave structures, or the spiritual atmosphere, Vardzia leaves an indelible impression as a testament to Georgia’s historical and cultural legacy.

These are very unique caves and a must see in the area. It is also very popular and tourists visit all the time. It takes around 3 hours to walk through everything, otherwise it's rushed

A must see in Georgia of significant historic value. Almost all places are reachable, however some easier then others. The old church and the surroundings are also amazing. Entrance is 15GEL and parking is 3 GEL. I would recommend adding the van transfer to the top for 3GEL, this way you can use your energy for walking around the caves.

Vardzia is an absolute must-see when visiting Georgia. This expansive 800-year-old monastery complex is a marvel of history and architecture. We took a bus up to the site, which was both convenient and affordable, definitely a good choice, considering there's quite a bit of walking involved once you arrive. Vardzia has mostly well-maintained stairs, though there are a few spots where you may need to make a small climb to reach higher points, so caution is advised. One of the highlights is the stunning viewpoint at the bell tower, located right in the heart of the complex.

The most beautiful and historical place in Georgia 🇬🇪 Because it is 4 hours drive from the capital, sometimes people don’t go here. But a must visit 😍 I have been here maybe 50 times and I would love to go again

The caves are terrific. You can explore an old cave system and have a fantastic view across the whole valley and over the whole cave system from the top. The whole area will take you about two hours. Close to the end there is a small shop where an old lady sells ice cream and refreshments. If you went left at the chapel you will come out after her shop so just go back for one or two minutes. There is also a bus which takes you up for only two GEL what might be good during the summer heat.
