Absolutely stunning cave monastery carved into the mountainside. The scale and craftsmanship are incredible, and the views over the valley are breathtaking. A must-see in southern Georgia — one of the country’s true highlights.

Had a wonderful few hours walking around here as the say was coming to an end. Such an amazing setting. It's only 16GEL to get in and is well worth it. Be ready for the initial 15 min walk uphill before arriving at the complex. If you are tall, it can be tough on the back on exiting as the stairs go down a low tunnel

This cliffside cave city along the Kura River is unlike anything else, blending history, architecture, and adventure. Exploring the labyrinth of tunnels, rooms, and chapels felt like stepping into a different era, captivating both adults and children alike. The kids were fascinated by the hidden passageways, while the panoramic views of the river valley offered plenty of “wow” moments. Even in damp conditions, the paths were safe and manageable, making it an engaging and educational outing for families. Vardzia is a perfect spot for families, cultural travelers, or small groups seeking a hands-on historical adventure. ⭐ Highlights & Recommendations • Wander through the cave network to see how the monks lived and worked centuries ago. • Visit the Church of the Dormition to admire the centuries-old frescoes. • Pause at cliffside viewpoints for sweeping vistas of the Kura River valley. 📝 Tips for Visitors • Wear comfortable shoes with good grip—some steps and paths can be uneven or slippery. • Plan 2–3 hours to explore the site fully (we needed 3 hours), depending on how fast your children move. • Supervise children carefully near cliff edges and steep stairways. • Bring a light rain jacket if the forecast calls for showers; outdoor sections can get wet, though caves provide shelter. ⚠️ Constructive Feedback / Things to Improve • Narrow stairways and tunnels can be tricky for younger children, so assist where needed. Part of the exit tunnel can also be challenging for anyone with lower back discomfort. • Some signage could be more detailed or offered in multiple languages to enhance understanding.

Very good place and well run. Just loads of hornets! I loved the natural springs giving drinking water. Also the bathrooms are very good. Bus is a must take in the heat!

Caves are a bit on the homogeneous side in that they all pretty much look the same. One notable exception is the interior church, complete with paintings of Queen Tamar and some interesting bells located outside. Lots of steep stairs to navigate, so folks with mobility issues will be challenged. Make sure to pay the extra 2 GEL for the optional van ride up the hill.

Visiting Vardzia was an unforgettable experience! This incredible cave monastery complex carved into the cliffs is truly awe-inspiring. Walking through its tunnels and chambers, you can feel the weight of history and imagine life centuries ago. The location itself is breathtaking – dramatic cliffs, stunning views over the valley, and a deep sense of peace and mystery. I was amazed by the scale, the architecture, and the atmosphere. Vardzia is absolutely a must-see in Georgia – a magical place that leaves a lasting impression.

I am in awe how beautiful this place is. We almost didn’t make it. Arrived 6:30pm and they close at 7pm. We had to walk 15 mins uphill to go the top as the transport van for the day has closed. Regardless, totally worth of foot pain 😆

Magic place and among best experiences I've had in Georgia, which is full of historic places. It looks something out of fairy tale or Middle Earth. There are around 500 cave dwellings and it has a layout of town, with apothecas, wine cellars, water resorvoirs and churches. The main church offers majestic frescoes from 13th century, like a Sistine chapel of cave. Views from the cave are breathtaking. You need two hours two explore. I recommend getting audio guide to appreciate the history behind. There can be some steep climbs, but nothing my 9yo couldn't tackle.
