Wat Phou is an absolutely incredible site and one of the highlights of my trip to southern Laos. It’s a bit of a trek to get there from the city, but completely worth the effort — even in the rain! The entrance fee for foreigners is 55,000 Kip, and make sure to keep your ticket handy since you’ll need to scan it both when entering and leaving the site. From the moment you arrive at the base, the views are beautiful, with lush greenery and ancient stone structures scattered across the hillside.
The climb up can be a little challenging, especially if the steps are wet, but reaching the top feels rewarding. The temple ruins are stunning and full of character — it’s amazing to walk among the old stones and imagine what life might have been like centuries ago. There’s some restoration work going on, so you might hear a bit of construction noise, but it’s actually fascinating to watch the preservation process in action.
Even with the rain and uneven paths, the atmosphere is peaceful and spiritual. The combination of nature, history, and impressive views makes Wat Phou a truly special experience. I’d highly recommend making the trip — it’s so worth it!
