On thin ice: Stockholm's long-distance skaters brave the elements - SilverKris

"Sweden’s second-largest lake, where conditions can change suddenly and dramatically: experienced skaters recount being 20km out when a wind shift set a whole ice sheet drifting, forcing a last-second 1.5m jump onto solid shore ice with only seconds to spare before 15m of open water appeared—an illustration of both the thrill and the danger of long-distance natural-ice skating on large lakes." - Richard Orange

One of the largest lakes in Sweden. It seems like an ocean from the shore, due to the waves and associated roaring ocean sounds. I liked the view from Jönköping, and these photos were taken from the shores of Lake Vättern. The place can be really chilly, even during the autumn. It is advisable to bring warm clothes while visiting the shore of the lake.

Visiting to Lake Vättern is nothing short of spectacular. This beautiful lake, the second largest in Sweden, is a true gem with its crystal-clear waters and stunning surrounding landscapes. The first thing that struck me was the sheer size and clarity of the lake. The water is so clear that you can see right to the bottom in many places, making it perfect for swimming and other water activities. I spent some time kayaking, and the calm waters made for a peaceful and enjoyable experience. The scenery from the lake is breathtaking, with lush forests and charming towns dotting the shoreline. One of the highlights was visiting the quaint town of Gränna, famous for its polkagris (candy cane) making. The town’s picturesque streets and friendly locals added a delightful touch to my visit. Taking a ferry to Visingsö Island was also a treat – the island’s historical sites and natural beauty were well worth the trip. Fishing enthusiasts will also find Lake Vättern a paradise, with its abundance of fish species. I saw several anglers enjoying a successful day out on the lake. There are also numerous well-marked hiking and biking trails around the lake, providing fantastic opportunities to explore the surrounding nature at your own pace. The local cuisine, featuring fresh fish from the lake, was another highlight of my trip. Dining at lakeside restaurants with views of the sunset over the water was an unforgettable experience. Overall, Lake Vättern offers a perfect blend of outdoor adventure, relaxation, and cultural experiences. Whether you're into water sports, hiking, or simply soaking in beautiful views, this lake has something for everyone. I highly recommend visiting Lake Vättern for an unforgettable getaway in Sweden.

Very beautiful lake. While travelling in a bus from Linköping to Jönköping, right side this lake is located. Spectacular view from the window seat. During cloudy and rainy seasons the view from the shore is breathtaking of nature. Must visit place for tourists. Great and lovely place.

Perhaps the cleanest lake in Sweden. On the list of cons I'll put the coldness and that you have to know the lake to catch the big fishes.
