On the Grid : Switchback Cyclery

"If you're a cyclist, these people are your Tribe. The folks at Switchback are a gaggle of adorable bike nerds who want to share their knowledge, hear all about your ride, and support your accessory habit. They do a lot of bike repairs, and are in the midst of renovating their already-beautiful shop. They'll also do a 'collaborative build,' which is essentially an educational session where they impart their wisdom and help you help yourself build the custom bike you've always dreamed of. They are super spirited, serious aficionados, and super sincere. They are stocked with parts, accessories, fancy jerseys and apparel, and everything else you could possible need. Bring your bike in for a tune-up or take this season's Raleigh out for a joy ride." - Medina Abdelkader

Beyond 5 service!! Shout out to Rob, Tommy and Michael. They are very knowledgable and offer tons of great advices with patience and kindness. When you asked a question, sometimes they will even give you more than 1 answer, how amazing they are! Wish I’ve visited this bike shop earlier! The shop also has a lot of bikes to try out and with a good range of price too! You will also notice they have plenty options of accessories and a fully functioning repair department on site. Another good thing to know is that they focus on selling local brands. And if you buy new bikes from them, it comes with annual free tuning every year! Will recommend this shop to everyone.

One of my brake wires was disattached and needed to be repaired. I was amazed how fast Velotique was able to help me. They took in my bike as an emergency, and it was repaired while I just waited and walked around a little. Staff and the owner really know what they are doing and are super friendly and make your experience very enjoyable. Thank you very much, Velotique! I would definitely recommend this store to my friends and neighbors.

Rob and his team at Velotique are very informative and helpful with our regular bike tune-up and cycling needs. They are responsive and quick to address our concerns to remedy our situation with great communication and customer service. I highly recommend this local independent bicycle store in Toronto.

Google
The store is phenomenal they have a large selection of bikes and winter related equipment (skiing etc). The brands they carry are amazing especially when it comes to bikes they have non mainstream brands most of the cycles they carry are manufactured in Canada (Devinci, norco), German brands (bombtrack -gravel bikes road bikes ) - this brand especially you don’t see a lot of stores carry them . Sales representative was extremely helpful . really good place to go plus they have good pricing I think I saw a carbon frame bike for 2599 devinci I think . Really good local bike store . great experience .

Google
I'm always really impressed with the honesty and integrity of Velotique. I found this shop when we moved away from downtown, and bought a second bike there. They're a great team, do good work, and they stand behind the work they do. I've never had a bad experience. On the rare occasion (like today) that I had to bring my bike back in for a post-tuneup adjustment, they fixed it on the spot, and was committed to getting it right so that I could get back on the road. If you're in the east end and looking for a bike shop, this is the place.

Dropped my bike off to be boxed up for a trip leaving on Saturday morning. Called in advance to confirm if it would be ready before our flight. Dropped it off on Monday and asked them if they could guarantee it would be ready for pick up on Friday. The guy made a note and told me it would be. It was not ready on Friday and they don’t open till 11 on Saturday, so it was not able to get on the flight. It was not ready until 1:40 on Saturday afternoon. When we picked it up, there was not even apology or any discount for missing such a huge deadline. Just a “Oh yeah, we were kinda backed up.” When I said that they should have called me and told me it would not be ready on time, he said nothing. It cost me $91. He had guaranteed me Friday and it was not ready until Saturday in late afternoon. It will now cost me hundreds of dollars to send. Not the customer service experience I expected from Velotique.

This place is amazing! Service was fast and efficient. The staff are friendly and very helpful. Tommy and Zach are the best! Quality product and service. Definitely coming back when I am in town. Thanks for the service and will make my niagara ride easier.

Google
They fixed a rear tire flat and found I needed a new tube, so I added this extra expense to my bill which was very reasonable for such quick quality service. I was very impressed with Velotique's overall work and customer service. Thnx 😊

Yelp
I've been to this Beaches location multiple times and I always pleasantly surprised about the degree of knowledge, customer service and speed at which this bike shop works. After my service today, I felt a Google review was warranted as my thanks to this amazing bike shop. I have to say that my experience has always been very consistent and the level of service always top-notch! After moving tot he Beaches a couple of years ago, I was looking for a new local bike shop. I found them online and I rifled through their Google reviews and after seeing so many positive reviews, I decided to try them out and I can honestly say, without any hesitation whatsoever, that this is definitely my go-to bike shop! The staff are not only extremely friendly but they speak in a language that you understand--if you're a little more technical, they can elaborate in jargon you're used to--if you're not so technical, they not only explain in a language that you'll understand but they make realistic recommendations and will not try to gouge with unnecessary parts or services and everything is very reasonably and competitively priced! I've been to other shops and before I knew it, I left the store with so many extra things that I realized I didn't really need. This doesn't happen here. I can't stop talking about how great Cycle Solutions is and the more I interact with their various staff, I am absolutely certain that they have the right business model that maintains a very loyal customer base and their consistent client-focused service will always impress, whether it's your very first time or your millionth time in their store. THANK YOU Cycle Solutions for helping my family keep our bikes more on the roads than in the shop!!!

Yelp
I visited the store for a replacement (or so I thought) of one of my wheels. I thought I had a flat, but I'm a novice cyclist and didn't realize I'd just neglected to pump my tires enough. Two staff members helped me out - one pumped my tires and the other readjusted my frame when it was squeezing my tire too much. It was such great service and they have good products. It was also a chance for me to pick up lights, which were environmentally conscious, waterproof and on sale. Score! Coming back here if I need anything else for my bike. Really helpful, friendly staff!

Yelp
Had a tune-up here recently, and I was impressed that I did not have to book ahead, or wait a long time to get my bike back, even though it's spring and a lot of bike places are swamped at this time of year (then again, it's been pretty cold this spring - but this was BEFORE we had a ton of snow dumped on us in April). I was able to just walk in with no appointment, and my bike was ready for pickup within just a few days. The staff were really nice, and they did a great job - my bike rides like a dream now, and hills are noticeably easier to ride up than they used to be, even though I'm a bit out of shape from not riding all winter. The fact that my bike is a little quirky in design and has an internal gear hub (making getting to the gears a lot harder) didn't seem to be an issue at all... And they even helped me get a couple of bags of pet food I was carrying (since I was short on time and trying to do multiple errands at once) secured on my bike safely! Prices were... maybe a touch higher than I would have hoped for, but not out of line by any means. Maybe just a touch on the high side of average. But worth it for the excellent service. Will definitely be going back!

Yelp
Great shop. A++++ customer service. Had an issue with a product purchased here and instead of referring me to the manufacturer (as most places would do) they exchanged the product no questions asked. Also all around well stocked and curated bike shop.

Yelp
I needed some chain oil but they were already closed. Someone was still inside and saw me looking at the opening hours. They opened up the door for me and sold me a bottle of oil. I even got a 5 minute primer on how to clean and tighten the chain. Customer service: A+. I'll be certainly bad and will by a bit more than just oil.

Yelp
I should have turned around and left when I walked into the service area and witnessed two employees removing a bottom bracket from a $5000 bike with a sledge hammer and a screwdriver.(there is a tool for that purpose). But all I needed was a axelnut for my rear wheel, a simple request. The employee disappeared for 15 minutes and returned with the wheel and the part I needed , no charge, wow fantastic! In walking to my car I realized the cassette no longer worked, it had been removed, reinstalled incorrectly and a part had been lost. Well things happen, accidents happen. Problem is he told me it had not been removed, though curiosly he spent 20 min looking for the part he didn't loose when he didn't remove the cassette. So I entered the shop needing a $10 part and left with a worthless rear wheel.

Yelp
I left my bike here for a minor repair - the chain was skipping. I should have thought twice after hearing the irate customer in front of me complaining, but I left my bike there anyways. When I came back to pick up my bike, the seat has been badly torn. I asked them what had happened and the mechanic swore up and down that they never touch the seats, and had no idea what had happened. When I told him that I in fact had seen another mechanic remove the seat, he told me that that was impossible. He thought the whole thing was quite a laughing matter - he kept smirking and giggling through the whole episode. When we asked the other mechanic he admitted that yes, in fact, he had removed the seat. He couldn't explain why he'd done it, and insisted that he hadn't damaged it. They refused to help me in any way, or acknowledge that they'd done anything wrong. The guy at the front desk said he'd have the manager call me back, but 3 days later, I haven't heard a thing. AND - they failed to even fix the minor problem I went in for. The chain still skips and I'm going to have to take the bike in to a real bike shop to be fixed and to get a new seat. This place has obnoxious and incompetent mechanics and a manager who doesn't take responsibility.

Yelp
On the hunt for bicycle accessories (mainly clipless pedals and shoes) I originally overlooked this shop in my neighborhood thinking I could get a better deal at say, MEC or something across town. Decided to stop in and see what kind of selection they had. First of all, this store is massive and has EVERYTHING you could imagine for cycling enthusiasts. Secondly, the staff was so helpful, and friendly, and completely "let me be" when I could not at all make a decision and wanted to just brood over it. They offered a solution to me that was cost saving and convenient. In the end (the owner?) answered a multitude of cycling questions I had with patience and enthusiasm. She also told me that they had been in business for (was it 27?) years and really know their stuff. So helpful, and I fealt completely comfortable asking all sorts of inane questions about things I was clueless about. She then directed me to their useful videos online, about bicycle tuning and maintenance. good find. She also attached the clips to my shoes for me, for free, and explained to me exactly how to use them. In regards to the price, in the end they were very competitive. None of my purchases were above average price, and the selection was impressive. Honestly, if you want a basket (for example), there were SO MANY TO CHOOSE FROM. Really enjoyed this experience, and will be back for sure.

Yelp
Decent bike shop, convenient location, attentive staff. Good service, done right the first time & ready when they say.

Yelp
Friendly and knowledgeable staff, well-stocked, reasonable prices. What more does one want in a bike shop? We're not talking about the subtleties of medium rare steak. I could almost stop my review there. In fact, if you have a short attention span, just stop reading. I've been to this shop a couple times now. Every time the staff has been super friendly and helpful...I didn't even notice the recent change in ownership. From helping me with a very inconvenient flat I got in the Beaches (how aggravating that the Canadian Tire right next to where I go the flat had nothing I needed for dealing with it) to securing a bell to keep me from being hit by crazy Toronto drivers, I've had my needs met. Prices are definitely reasonable. Staff are not hipster jerks like some other bike shops that will remain nameless. No one scoffed at the gears available on my bike nor my lack of a wallet chain, mustache, and jeans too tight to pedal in. When I bought a bell recently, the staff member joked about me avoiding the No-Bell Prize, aka Toronto's $85 fine for the lack of a bell. He then offered to throw it on for me, quickly and for free. Yay. I'm happy to patronize Velotique for my cycling needs.

Yelp
Shopping here I was reminded again why shopping at local stores especially with knowledgeable staff is so important. I was looking for a pair of cross country skis in an effort to mix up my indoor winter cycling training. I called the store and was greeted with someone was able and willing to talk to me about my options, over the phone! I went in the next day and had similar conversation with other staff member. In both instances they very helpful and attentive and helped me find something that would suit my both my current skill levels and goals in this activity. As an aside it is difficult to find stores that sell cross county skis. Now as a comparison I did venture into MEC weeks prior as I work nearby but was met several times with staff having little knowledge in there stock and cross country skiing. MEC was different 20 years ago, perhaps an effect of growing too big. In the end I happily purchased a pair of cross country boots, skis, poles etc. at Velotique and will be back tomorrow to do the same for my wife. By the way, I place huge importance on purchasing from small bike stores but I did check online prices on after my purchase and they are in line with what was out there, as I suspected, so I would highly recommend this store.

Yelp
This is my "local" ahem bike shop. I'm actually a west-ender, but my cycling habits bring me out to the east-end frequently during the week. This is the store that has many one-of-a-kind tools and accessories. They do not sell bikes or maintain them. They just sell accessories, clothing and tools. I first heard of them through their excellent repair videos, displaying one of the co-owners, Saul. Highly recommend this place to get most of your gear from.

Yelp
Great shop that doesn't currently get five stars because it's in the process of changing ownership. In the past, Velotique stuck to a simple and differentiated approach to bike stores: they sold bike stuff but didn't sell bikes or provided tune - ups. This could seem odd but obviously it was a concept that worked since the shop remained in business, amassed a loyal customer base and was able to provide great prices on their stuff. The new owner seems really nice and time will tell whether the changes he's bringing to the store will work or not. Kasia and Ellen are still around and it's an welcome sight seeing them, helping us out with the transition period.

Yelp
The store is big with a wide selection of bikes, accessories, and clothing. The staff are helpful and take the time to discuss your needs and the bicycles that could meet them. And they let me bring my dog inside as well. I always appreciate pooch friendly business.

Yelp
This shop was excellent. We went in with a broken timing chain on a tandem. Rob fixed it really well and carefully set the tension on the chain, which was complex. They did it all right away. Saved us from walking 20 km home.

Yelp
I went in to look at bikes and left buying a bike that I am very happy with. The service was very friendly and informative. The new management has brought many positive changes to the store. I am happy to support such a great store with wonderful staff.

Yelp
Read some reviews not so positive reviews of other local bike shops. Then came across this one. Just needed a flat repaired. Dropped in on a Saturday morning and it was done in 15 min. Knowledgeable, friendly staff. $20 and on my way.

Dave B.

Yelp
This place is horrible they do not have all the tools to fix bikes and they keep deleting my bad review, they should leave it on to show what a horrible job they did on bike but this will be deleted if your smart do not go there the chinese guy is the worst laughed like a bob cat when he handed me my mangled bike.

Yelp
the staff is friendly, knowledgeable and patient. Great selection of product. Keep in mind that they only sell bike accessories, no bikes.

Diane J.

Yelp
I was a little nervous about buying a bike as I haven't cycled in a few years. I actually first tried the bikes cycling inside the store. It felt silly but it was enough to remind me how I loved cycling. I did then try them outside. The service was so helpful and patient that I bought a bike and am now cycling to work and loving it.

Kris Q.

Yelp
Was looking for a bike shop on google maps and it directed me to this place. I must say I was blown away by the service here! They listen to your needs and really make you feel important the moment you enter. I didn't feel like I was just another number walking through the store. They were very knowledgeable and I would definitely come back here again! Highly recommend :)

David N.

Yelp
Service was good.. prices were very very expensive.. tires I purchased are 20$ cheaper at MEC, and almost half price online.

Bob J.

Yelp
This place is awesome. They saw me looking at their hours before they opened and they opened early to take my bike in and fix it up. They did a great job doing everything I asked and more. They fixed my handle bars and I didn't even know they were messed up (I wondered why my wrist hurt). I will most definitely be going back there.
