On the Grid : Velow Bikeworks

"Established in 2015 and Based at Tribe Porty, Velow brings incredibly unique, and beautifully restored, vintage and classic bikes to Portobello. Walter’s workshop is an emporium of every bike part you can imagine, topped with interesting frames and memorabilia – including some of his own racing numbers proudly displayed. Velow Bikeworks specialises in quality, hand-built custom bikes and restorations and will have something in stock no matter what type of bike you’re looking for. Walter will work with you to build your dream bike that will look great and ride beautifully. And if he doesn’t have your perfect base bike in stock? He’ll source it for you from somewhere in the world. If you’re planning a trip to Portobello and fancy a bike ride along the promenade, get in touch with Walter and he’ll be able to sort you out with a bike for the day." - Sarah Wardlaw

I don't often write reviews, as it feels too transactional when dealing with small businesses, but I understand how important they are for new business. Therefore, I feel it necessary to make absolutely clear for the public how solid Velow Bikeworks is as a parts supplier (Used and NIB/NOS) for niche builders such as myself as well as for serving the general public. Walter, Will, and Craig are so sound. For the better part of two years now I've been going to Walter's shop for specific parts to build my period correct bicycles, and he is without a doubt the most reasonable business to trade within across the whole of Edinburgh. Deals are made and I never feel like I lose out. Even in instances of potentially* faulty parts, exchanges, refunds, and credit are always made available. Honesty is his best policy, and it's clear that customer satisfaction is his priority. Most importantly, however, is that Walter's demonstrable love and knowledge of cycling is what draws me to his shop, sometimes for parts, other times for conversation. It's not common to find bike businesses who still respect the old days, and these guys get it. Loyal for life.

A truly first class bike shop. William helped me out with some new brake shoes for my bike. Very helpful, very friendly and excellent selection of parts.

I've had the pleasure of dealing with Walter for my new bike purchase and have found him to be thoroughly knowledgeable, polite, punctual and professional. Oh and he built an amazing RC500 custom gravel bike which I LOVE. Do not hesitate, shop local, support independent business and give the guys a message to see if they can line you up with your dream bike. 5 stars all day long!

A gem of a local bike workshop. Exceptionally helpful for my steel bike restoration - Walter's knowledge of what is feasible in mixing old and new components, and ability to assess whether a rusty frame was still salvageable, was key to my project. Velow got the tricky bits done, leaving me to do the final build, which is exactly how I wanted to work. Couldn't be happier with the result and the process - a lot of fun during covid times. They've also worked on a modern bike for me, and again the knowledge of what to fit (to solve a press fit bottom bracket issue) was really important. They are just as quick and nice and fairly priced as all the other reviews say. Thank you!

Every cyclist dreams of finding a bike workshop like this. Walter and William are super friendly and welcoming, very knowledgeable, give good value for money and always go above and beyond to help out. I pass through Portobello on my commute and I've turned up a number of times with various bike disasters (bent chainrings, ripped tyres etc) just as they're about to close up for the day and they have always sorted me out and got be back on the road. Unlike the big chain bike shops they actually listen to and get to know their customers' requirements (budget, spec, how it will be used etc) and then work with you to find a sensible solution and never try to pressure you into the most expensive option. It's especially useful that they have such a library of good used parts for budget fixes, for modern bikes as well as vintage builds (my bike is a modern steel gravel/road setup on wide road tyres). I wouldn't go anywhere else for servicing or maintenance. Support your local bike shop! Thanks Velow, keep up the good work!

Called here while in the area looking for a secondhand bike but unfortunately they had none of the type I was looking for. However I was able to buy s/h riser bars for my hybrid at a reasonable price, choosing from a wide selection. The member of staff was friendly and helpful. Recommend this place, well worth a visit.
