On the Grid : Venice Plants

"Perhaps the oldest biz on the list, Venice Plants has been the go-to for green goods on Lincoln Blvd for over 27 years. The low-profile nursery occupies just a sliver of a corner but packs in a shockingly large selection of indoor/outdoor succulents, shrubs, perennials, palms and California natives. Google
Had an awful experience — the owner was so rude when I asked him if he would sell the plant for $15 less — i would have respected a simple “no” as an answer. Instead, he got very emotional, and frustratingly took the plant away and wouldn’t talk to us. We went right down the road to their competitor Urban Jungle and had an amazing experience with the staff — they have free coffee, great plants, and much better vibes. Go there!

Dustin is very knowledgeable about plants. We learned a lot from him! He’s a true Venice local and has a lot of amazing stories to tell. Happy to support a business that’s been around for over 30 years. Thanks Dustin!

Google
I walked by the place and laughed because there was an idiot trying to put an 6’ palm tree in the front seat of a Mercedes. I probably laughed too loud because I had on headphones. The owner of the plant store lost his mind and chased me down and cursed me out. He was in a posture to charge me at the very end when I walked off. Steer clear of this lunatic. There’s another plant store in walking distance.

Uma

Google
Terrible customer service. I politely asked to exchange a plant for a different size, not a refund, just store credit. The owner took it back but told me never to come back. Complete shock. I rarely write reviews, but his lack of professionalism and basic decency left me speechless.

Michele

Google
Hipsters not welcome LOL the owner was delivering a tree to our neighbor, and my wife asked where it came from if it was from Flora Grubb Nursery. The owner yelled at her and said he doesn’t want to talk to anyone who patronizes corporations and that she’s not welcome at Venice plants. Mind you, she only innocently asked a question. He said yes, I have an attitude. I am OG Venice get out of here. Hipster is not welcome. You’ve been warned

Google
I love going to this place! They have an amazing selection of plants, I never leave without one. The owner and his sons are very nice and helpful and always remember me when I come in :). The plants are reasonably priced, it’s the only place I will go!

Google
Unfortunately, I have to echo some of the reviews below. I found the service to be breathtakingly rude. Though they have a reasonable selection - in a jammed and very confined space - there are no prices (or other information) listed so one must chase down the owners to get the price/information for any single plant, and they act like they are doing you a huge favor. If you enjoy being abused as part of the customer experience then this is the place for you. Otherwise, there are many plant shops nearby with friendly and knowledgeable service.

Google
Best plant store in the area. Cactus and tree selection are really special. Purchased large plants to decorate my new loft in Santa Monica. Super happy. Jonathon is so nice and helpful. Recommend this place to anyone.

Yelp
This place has been here since I moved to Venice nearly 30 years ago. Dustin knows his plants and has delivery service, plant service and gives customers a fair deal. You may not get anyone on the phone yet if you go there night person you'll get help.

Yelp
Great place to buy some plants and awesome pots. We're very excited about the experience, the price, and what we ended up getting. Great to meet the owner there and I'd recommend to anyone to shop here!

George P.

Yelp
Owner is extremely rude for absolutely no reason. Entire interaction with him and his son was terrible. Don't waste your time.

Yelp
Selection of plants is okay, definitely not the best. The plants are very well kept and healthy. I've purchased a few plants from this place and they have done quite well. No air plants. Service is quite good.

Yelp
Large selection indoor and outdoor plants. Really nice owners. Bought an aloe plant for my sunburn

Yelp
Heaven Pure Heaven! I almost don't want to review this place to keep it a secret because it is a gem. I will honestly make the 45min-hour drive to visit this incredible place. PARKING: Located on the corner of Vernon & Lincoln Entrance is on Vernon, with street parking PLANTS: Such a selection!! Both indoor and outdoor plants. So many different varieties in all stages (young and more mature). You can walk through each aisle and you will find so many different plant options. Mature beauties hanging above head, succulents, you name it. Really look and you will find some special ones. The only downside is, there are no prices on anything. PRICING: The pricing is the 2nd best part of this glorious place! Plant prices have skyrocketed to ridiculous numbers, but I feel you get such a bang for your buck here! $8 for a very healthy and great sized Silvery Anne, and walked away with a gorgeous full String of Pearl's for $20. Super reasonable pricing. SERVICE: AMAZING! OUTSTANDING, FRIENDLY. Shout Out to Jonathan, he was awesome! Great to talk plants and chit chat, telling me about this family owned business being here for 40 years I believe. I really felt the love & care here. They helped me pick a beautiful plant, walking through each aisle, eyeballing the perfect one to take home Overall 10/10, feels intimate and private and still sacred. I really hope this place stays humble and xontinues to service Venice with nothing but plant love.

Yelp
My fave go-to plant store! I'm from Oakland and will make the drive (with a little fun in the way) just for them! I've been to many store in the Bay Area, SoCal, others but not one compares to this spot. Having gone back the other weekend was nice to see the homer is still hustling every day, running back and forth, as usual :). Thank you as always, and can't wait for the next visit!

Yelp
My college friend Kou from UC Santa Barbara is a Venice Beach local. So he's like Sophie, let's adventure for a few hrs and I'll show ya more of Venice. So this was the plant spot he suggested. It's awesome! You walk in and it's like a carefully watered jungle. Plants dangling above yr head and below and everywhere in between. The aisles are Narrow, so the plants are kinda in the aisles and you divide them like the Red Sea. The prices aren't listed on any of them or the type of plant, but if you use the plant.net app it does the trick. It's what I do when I'm hiking and come across cool unidentified plants. The cacti were especially gorgeous and LA being in newly in a drought once again, being fresh-water conservative is a thing. The city already recycles our waste water for reusable but to be sustainable and thought, the drought resistant cacti is what I will be purchasing. In the future, we are moving shortly bc of the real estate hunt. So ya know don't want to move cacti and destroy them. Shall be back once we make this investment property purchase and buy some beauties to create a lil cacti garden. I adore this local hidden gem.

Yelp
Bigger selection than other plant shops on the same street and better priced. I bought my humongous cactus from here and love it. They offer a delivery option for the area, which was $20-$25.

Yelp
As a patron for over 20 years, the lush quality and more than competitive prices of these large beautiful plants, is absolutely mind boggling. As an avid plant lover, Venice Plants is the "best" found in this county. Aka Auntee Goldee

Yelp
This place was entertaining yet stressful and aggravating at the same time. Entertaining because the two young guys who were there that day had so much energy and were playful and funny. The way they were running things made us feel like we were buying something illicit out of a car trunk and that we'd better hurry before the police showed up. Stressful because the space was so tight. There was not enough room to pass strangers comfortably, let alone maintain social distance. Someone always had to back up to yield. Aggravating because nothing was priced. They were busy while we were there so it was difficult to get prices so that we could make decisions. I didn't totally hate my experience here, but I prefer Merrihew's in Santa Monica for my plant needs while I'm in the area.

Yelp
Kevin's customer service is Amazing! It's been family owned for 35 years and they know what they are doing and talking about!!!!!!! Don't waste your time at other nurseries! This is a one stop shop!

Yelp
According to Yelp plant purchases are spiking. My coworkers and I are all for this trend and have recently started to over fill our homes with plants, plants, and more plants. Venice Plants instantly caught our eye since their storefront is overflowing with bright green plants, many sitting on the curb of this insanely busy intersection. This literal 'hole in the side of a building' is stocked with both indoor and outdoor plants. The entire business is located outside with a shade canopy protecting the light sensitive plants from the elements. The gentleman I worked with was a little distant at first, but warmed up after I asked a few questions. He assisted me with finding the perfect hanging pathos for my bookshelf, as well as purchasing my first tree! Yep, that's right, my home is officially a jungle. Outside of greenery they also sell pots, macrame hangers, and are stocked full of knowledge. This plant store has been here for decades and I hope it stays on this corner for many years to come.

Yelp
They are one of the sweetest people that I've met since I moved here and I asked if I could purchase a little pot with soil cuz I didn't need a whole bag of soil or so I asked them I was very hesitant but then I don't think I should have been so nervous because what I offered to move pay he said don't worry about it it's free just told me not to use that next time cuz that's what I did and to maybe use or borrow a cup of soil from my next door neighbor's Garden. Once again I felt even kindness can survive God is madness

Yelp
We got some ice cream at Wanderlust. She's really into plants so she crossed the busy street to see what the hype was about. Parking: Generally street parking. It can get pretty busy. Feels: It's around a semi busy spot of Venice but proximal to nice spots. The spot itself is pretty nice. The spot is overwhelmed with hundreds of plants. It's in a shaded outdoor location with plants galore! CUSTOMER SERVICE: Awesome. The family was helpful checking in on us now and then while sharing their knowledge. OVERALL: 4.5 Stars. Not too shabby for my first plant experience. The plants were plentiful, prices were reasonable, and the experience was pleasant. Whether you are a seasoned or new green thumb, this is a good spot. I can see myself coming back here. Tips: * Park on the same side so you don't have to cross the wild street * In order to get the scoop of plants, you have to show up.

Yelp
We stopped by to check out their cactus plants and ended up finding 4 plants we loved and ended up buying. The team repotted them in white pots at our request and also provided delivery since I live very close by and they had the staff to help that day. The owner and his staff were very friendly and so passionate about their plants! They were patient and accommodating while we decided which ones we wanted. Overall, I'm really impressed with my experience and I'll be back for more plants soon!

Yelp
This place is incredible!! Venice Plants has been a respected fixture for years. The selection is great and the prices are far better than competitors with the same quality of plants. A family owned business, everyone I've encountered has been helpful, knowledgeable, professional and very nice. They never disappoint and I highly recommend them.
google avatar

Yelp
I had a negative experience buying a cactus from Venice plants. The prices aren't marked on the plants. I was told one price and after they wrapped up the cactus and loaded it into the car they said they made a mistake and that it cost a hundred more than what they originally told me. It was just very unprofessional and a bad experience. I would not recommend doing business there.

Yelp
Came here on a pretty quiet weekend morning, in search of a white pot for one of my new plants I purchased elsewhere, which I brought with me. One of the ladies immediately asked me what I was doing there and pretty much rushed me through the little store searching for a white pot. I couldn't even tell that she worked there at first! I barely got to browse the store, she rushed me around so quickly and seemed really frantic. Overall it seemed like a lot of really nice indoor and patio plants! Their pot selection however was small, and she only found one pot that fit the description I was looking for.

Yelp
Huge plant selection! I'm not really sure how much anything costs though which is pretty annoying. My friend recommended that I reach out to Dustin for some lattice vines to help create privacy from our neighbors. There was a pretty good selection at Venice plants--different sized gallons, and different colored bougainvillea flowers and star jasmines. We couldn't decide what to do so Dustin took us around the neighborhood to show us how they would look and described the maintenance. Super helpful!! When we were ready to order, we just placed it over the phone and were able to get free delivery! So easy! I can't wait to see how much our lattices will grow next year.

Yelp
Venice can rise and fall and rise again, but there is one glorious paradise of a small business that will always stand in this little beach town, and that is Venice Plants. I have been visiting Dustin and his plant shop for 20 years now and each time I stop in I leave with something unique, something special, something quality and a feeling of true old-school Venice community. This place is a gem. A magical garden right on an unexpected little corner on Lincoln Blvd. Dustin's plants are QUALITY and are the best prices you will find anywhere this side of town. I have a Song of India that I purchased 20 years ago that is still thriving. If you live in Venice, if you live on the west side it is a crime to go anywhere else to buy a plant. Support this little local shop! I promise you will walk in there and leave with a plant that will become a life long friend as well as making new friends with Dustin and his son John. Listen to them and you will never kill a plant again. A Father and Son team of plant masters. Thank You for the jungle you have made my home!

Yelp
Venice Plants is the absolute best. I come here every week with my boyfriend in search of new plants to add to our collection. It never fails to impress me. They have a wide variety from cacti, succulents, hoyas, peperomia, large plants, and hanging plants. The owners are as great as the plants they sell. Dustin and Tina are a joy to speak with and always extremely helpful. They're half the reason I love Venice Plants so much! The prices are pretty reasonable for a small nursery. They also sell great looking planters to go with your new plants. The planter prices are great compared to places online so I always try to snatch it there. The shop itself is pretty tight, but as long as you're careful, socially distancing is possible.
google avatar

Ramin A.

Yelp
Honestly i don't even want to write this review. This place is perfect. The plant selection is great. The family that owns it is always super helpful and nice. I really don't want more people coming to this gem of a plant store, but alas, I need them to stay in business to keep fueling my plant addiction. Seriously, always a great selection of indoor and outdoor plants. Always a ton of the classics, monsteras, fiddles, snakes, pothos, and always some weird ones that you've never seen anywhere else.
google avatar

Yelp
amazing plant selection!!! workers here are extremely knowledable about their plants and they have tons of plans of all shapes and sizes. only thing is no prices on anything. great selection highly recommend checking out though. :)

Yelp
I come here all the time and have for a few years. I always have such a pleasant time and leave with new plant knowledge. Dustin, Red & Jonathan always are a pleasure to work with and really know their stuff. This place is a Venice icon. Thank you for all my healthy babies! I'll be back for more soon I am sure.
google avatar

Chrissy E.

Yelp
A great place to pick up some new indoor (or outdoor) plants for a decent price. I love their selection and their knowledgable staff. I arrived right as they opened and waited patiently while they unloaded many of their larger plants onto the sidewalk. It's a very small business with SO many plants! I highly recommend this place.

Yelp
Venice plants is the best nursery in the world. Let's break down why. 1. Southern California's climate is perfect for house plants. Why? Well 8 bazillion people living in LA will tell you that the climate is perfect. 2. Perfect for what? Nuclear glowing skin, KKK white teeth, and sexy AF plants. 3. Think about it. Would YOU as a HUMAN BEING THRIVE in SCORCHING 115 degree sunshine! 4. I don't care how close your ancestors lived NEXT TO THE EQUATOR, human beings have not been able to adapt let alone THRIVE in those blaring conditions. 5. I can't even sit in a sauna for like 5 minutes without wanting to run. 6. This being the case, Dustin and his crew raise beautiful plants that take beautiful snaps in my home. Shout out to night time interior design!
google avatar

Scott C.

Yelp
Found this place once I moved into the area. As a plant lover it was great to find a store where you can get those rare finds. I really enjoy talking to the owners and their family. They're very friendly once you take the time to chat with them and have always gone out of their way to help me when I visit with my girlfriend. I try to make this place a regular trip each weekend, you won't regret coming. Prices on the hard to find plants and planters are great, easily better then anything Ive shopped around locally or online. Make sure to give Dustin and Tina a holler when you're there, awesome people taking care of their awesome store.

Yelp
I bought a fiddle leaf fig from Venice Plants about 6 weeks ago. I'm new to plants and this was a big purchase for me. The water meter I bought was showing that the dirt was moist, so I wasn't watering it, but when the leaves started turning brown and falling off, I assumed root rot. I came into Venice Plants for soil and they told me to bring it in and they'd help out with the root rot. I returned with the plant, they saw it was way too dry, and gave me a full plant care lesson and then the owner even swapped out my fig with a new one because he said it would take a while for my fig to look pretty again. Very thoughtful staff, they went above and beyond.
google avatar

Jerri P.

Yelp
I'm not sure why I only recently found out about this gem! They have so many plants! It's seriously like a jungle in there. From rubber plants, to Ivy's, to pothos, to fiddle leaf figs, to cactus, to succulents.. they got it all! (Except a watermelon peperomia *sad face*). Still on the hunt for that so if anyone knows where I can get one ASAP, message me! Lol. Anyways, this place is awesome. I would say 95 percent of the shop is covered in plants and the 5% is the walkway for you to browse. The prices seemed fair and yes they take card and cash but I'm sure they prefer cash. We both a small silver pothos for only $6. The employee are super friendly and informative about the plants and how to care for them. Definitely coming back to fill up my plant shelfie! Thanks Venice Plants!

Yelp
Venice Plants is by far my favorite plant shop in L.A. The owner, Dustin, and his family are awesome - super knowledgeable, friendly and keep the shop clean and stocked with every plant imaginable. I literally have one balcony at home filled with cacti and the other resembles a lush, tropical jungle! I love Venice Plants' selection so much that I head over there 2-3 times a week. Have visited practically every garden center, nursery and plant store in L.A., but they don't hold a candle to Venice Plants. Thank you, Dustin, for opening my eyes to the world of plants. I am on my way to becoming a crazy plant lady!
google avatar

Annie S.

Yelp
First time shopping at this plant nursery. And actually I've been back today again! I bought about twenty plants. They potted them all for me. Loaded them into my car and their van and delivered to my house. Prices are super reasonable compared to other local nurseries. Family run business, Johnathan and his father Dustin have a funny, straightforward personality which made it a pleasure to work with them! We were cracking up working together! Highly recommend the place! Even in the 9,00000 degree heat, everyone had masks on the entire time!

Brigette E.

Yelp
The plants selection and quality are solid. The owner is enthusiastic. That being said, the two guys that run this place in the afternoons are lazy. On two separate occasions I've called, but no answer. Then once I get there, they are watching TV on their phone. They don't greet me and when I have a question they act super inconvenienced and yawn the entire time.
google avatar

Nick C.

Yelp
One of my favorite nieghborhood spots to plant shop. Great prices and feels like a jungle when you get inside. The staff is always willing to help load your car and they'll give you discount if you're a regular ;)
google avatar

Kalisha C.

Yelp
Excellent selection and prices. The nice guy at the shop helped me pick out and load several different plants.

Yelp
NOT GREAT... Visited Venice Plants today and here was my experience: * No plants were marked with prices * Space was extremely cluttered / unorganized * Selection was so-so * Plants were healthy-ish * When asked about price of a plant stand, the guy replied "$45 but you also have to buy a pot from us because none of your pots will fit the stand" (a normal 6 inch pot would fit the stand, don't know why he would say that, also how does he know what pots I have...) * Rude staff with lots of attitude (I wouldn't normally post a negative review but the guy who was working was very rude to us when we inquired about an item) To top it all off, the guy also wasn't wearing a mask... There seemed to be a few very helpful ladies that ran the shop as well but the male worker was awful. If you are going, don't ask for his help because you'll be very off put by him.
google avatar

Christina C.

Yelp
I stopped by Venice Plants to see if I could add to my quarantine plant collection, but even I, a plant newbie, could see that not all of their plants looked very healthy. They did have some gems, but I had to ask them to pull options from the back in order to find them. (Lots of leaves on the plants that were most easily accessible were browning or droopy.) I didn't love that there weren't any prices on any of the plants either, it made me feel like they would absolutely quote different prices for different people if they felt like it. Regarding covid-19 safety, one of the workers (the owners' son) wasn't wearing his mask correctly. He had it on, but wore it below his nose. They also didn't turn away customers who were blatantly disregarding the mask rule, and that also made me very uncomfortable considering this nursery is very cramped! All in all, this isn't going to be my go-to nursery, but they do have a lot of cute and healthy looking cacti and succulent options if that's what you're looking for. They also have a small but nice planter pot selection, but I would urge everyone to really inspect the plants from this nursery before they buy!
google avatar

Gianna S.

Yelp
I'm not really sure how this place is so highly rated. We were never greeted Never acknowledged Asked questions and the guys just mumbled an answer and walked away. Honestly some of the worse service I've experienced. I asked 3 questions ... and EVERYTIME the guy who worked there mumbled an answer and walked away. He would look at us, he wouldn't spend time or elaborate. Maybe it's a cultural thing, not sure. But it was awful!
google avatar

Pricilla D.

Yelp
I've been lucky enough to be able to WFH and after spending so much more time at home. I started to notice that I don't have a lot of greens in my house. So I started looking up houseplants, specifically easy to care for houseplants. I compiled a list and turned to Yelp to start looking for plant nurseries. I visited two other nurseries before coming to Venice Plants and I came specifically for a snake plant and a rubber tree. I saw that they had a few selections on Yelp for rubber trees and I figured snake plants were so common that they probably had those as well. What I liked about Venice Plants was that they had a huge selection of indoor plants. The two other nurseries I visited were larger in terms of square footage but they had probably a 5 to 1 ratio for outdoor to indoor plants. Venice Plants was the smallest but they had such a great and varied selection of indoor/outdoor plants. It's pretty cramped and the place is overflowing with plants and I can see it getting fairly difficult to move around if it's super crowded. Parking was easy as they had a ton of street parking. They sell a variety of planters as well. The only thing I didn't like was that everything felt a bit disorganized and they didn't have prices on a lot of their plants or planters. However, I wasn't in a rush so I just took my time and wandered around and plus I came for two specific plants. What I really liked about Venice Plants was that they repotted my plants for me when I bought my rubber tree and snake plant and planters. They added in fresh potting mix as well instead of just dumping the plant into a new planter. I highly recommend you come check it out if you're in the neighborhood for new house plants. Their prices were fair to me $20 per pot and $15 for the snake and rubber tree each.

Yelp
I had been here once to just buy some soil, and recently came back to buy 4 plants and 1 air plant. It's a very small plant nursery that can feel crowded a bit jammed on a busy weekend day. However, their plants all looks so lusciously green and healthy. It's beautiful in that little nursery. The guys working here seem very knowledgeable. You get this really magical mix of dismissive, helpful, and coolness from these guys. The mix just works. I don't know how else to describe it... I've been down to La Belle Plant Nursery, Merrihew's Sunset Gardens, and Hashimoto Nursery. La Belle is kinda bro-y, Merrihew's... well I didn't stay long enough to really know but in the time I was there, nobody really helped me, and Hashimoto was cool, but I also don't recall anyone helping me. Venice Plants is my fav. Loving my newest plants. :)

Diana M.

Yelp
They have a beautiful selection of plants. Seemed a bit pricey. $20 for very small Chinese money plants. And $45 for a clay pot that wasn't clean and had some defects, but bought it anyway because I needed it. The people who work there weren't very friendly. If you're customers are going to spend that much money on plants, at least be nice and welcoming.

Courtney C.

Yelp
Excellent plants and service! I have bought 8 trees from Dustin at Venice Plants over the past couple months. The prices are extremely reasonable. They delivered all of the trees to my place (a few miles away) for free! I was going to order expensive planter facades online. Dustin suggested I use the nice wooden planters he orders from his vendor and I purchased nearly at cost. They're beautiful and not as costly as most of the options I saw online. He and Phil came back to my house with the planters and bags of soil and planted the trees for free! (Of course, I tipped Phil generously, and Dustin, as the owner, refused a tip). I paid for the 8 trees, the planters, and the soil -- and all of the service was included in those already very fair prices! That kind of service is unparalleled. In addition, Dustin gave me a lot of plant food and detailed care instructions to ensure my plants stay healthy and grow nicely. Venice Plants is unbeatable. I'd definitely recommend based on the high quality plants and extraordinary service.
google avatar

Havyer G.

Yelp
Cute plants but overpriced. You could def find cheaper prices for the same plants everywhere so not sure I'd really come back. Their pots section is great tho! Def recommend if you're looking for some interesting pots for your plants.
google avatar

Esam B.

Yelp
Horrible customer service. The guy was very aggressive and rude, didn't even give us a chance to look and hear what we were looking for, just kept interrupting us. Never again.
google avatar

Rae U.

Yelp
This is a very beautiful shop! Though they do not allow pictures, I assure that it is worthwhile to go there if you're in need of any type of houseplant! The plants are very well taken care of and the customer service is wonderful! The man working today was so friendly! I bought a calathea ornata with a beautiful pot for $48 and a natural golden dieffenbachia with another cute pot for $36 they were definitely worth it :)
google avatar

Yelp
Significantly less expensive than competitors without negotiating. Dustin was super helpful in getting me three full night blooming jasmine for my backyard. Highly recommend

Yelp
It's really a magical place. If you are a plant nerd, this place should bring you joy

Deannie L.

Yelp
We bought some plants there, Tina, Dustin and John, were extremely helpful while helping a few other customers. Their plants are so beautiful and healthy unlike the ones you see at other nurseries. I will never go anywhere else.
