Where to Eat in Los Angeles

"A tiny Glendale grocery one block from the reviewer's home that feels like a treasure trove: it carries rare and seasonal items such as sour cherries, green almonds, Persian plums, about 15 varieties of labneh, fresh grape leaves, and Armenian basil, and also serves tasty lule kebab sandwiches grilled on charcoal outside." - Amelia Schwartz

Google
This tiny produce stand has rare fruits and imported vegetables—people visit from across town. I picked up loquats, guava, and fresh tropical greens. The proprietor knew each item’s origin and suggested preparation tips. The space felt more like a curated market than a stall. It's a quiet local treasure for culinary explorers

I have passed by this place often and have never understood what it really was. At work today, we were surprised with some free lunch from the verdugo produce and deli. The meat quality is excellent. The chicken is a bit on the dry side, but the steak and the lule kebab was nice, juicy, and tender. Lavash bread was great to wrap the meat around and make mini sandwiches out of. Highly recommend this place for catering or ordering meats.

Google
I’ve always had a good experience at this local market. The vegetables are always very fresh as are the herbs and other grocery goods. I buy a fair amount of the fresh breads & Lavash that are delivered daily. There’s an amazing selection of preserves and jams in the back of the store too. Some of the frozen desserts are worth checking out too. So good. BONUS!! They carry Bounty bars. That’s worth the stop alone! Support local the money is feeding your neighbors.

I was introduced to this grocery store by an Armenian friend of mine, and it's a GEM! Friendly staff, and delicious foods and produce. Their Yogurt Soup and Bean Salad (with dill) are superb, and I highly recommend their potato pirozhkis. I'm not often in Glendale, but when I am, I always make a stop! Easy parking too.

Google
Such a great market and a perfect place to shop at for hosting. I usually go for the Royal Armenia Instant Coffees but will be coming back for their wide selection of jams, honeys, and deli.

I used to go to this store pretty often. The cashiers were super nice! However, I once heard how the manager or owner of the store was talking to them and it was very disturbing. He could have at least show some respect in front of the customers. The variety of food was ok, not enough Eastern European sweets for me. However, the prices are better than in other similar stores.

Google
I love this store! They have great produce/deli and you can order BBQ from them. The BBQ is amazing, I have ordered several times for events and each one of my guests loved it and asked where I ordered the food. THANK YOU GUYS! Also try there salads very tasty!

Yelp
I really really like this supermarket. I've only been shopping at American stores but, I'm Armenian and sometimes miss the taste of my childhood. This place takes care of that. They carry fruit here that I haven't seen at American supermarkets and reasonably priced. Everything I've purchased here has been fresh and delicious and I've never needed to return any items for spoilage. I really like the cashiers and the people behind the deli area as they're always so helpful and willing to answer any questions. I do feel like some things are a little more expensive that I'd find anywhere else but, the freshness is unbeatable and always worth it. The parking lot is small and so is the inside but, it's doable as there isn't always too many people when I come

Yelp
Really nice small grocery store. The parking lot was full so I parked across the street. They have everything from fresh produce and deli meats to hot foods. They even had a nice assortment of candies that I splurged on. Some stuff that you can't find anywhere else. Little gem on the south side of Glendale.

Yelp
Pros I've been coming here for a couple months for my produce needs due to their very affordable pricing. Better prices than Vons or Ralph's and quality is good. It is a small place with a specific ethnic selection of items, so I like to pick out something random once in a while to experience something new. The register ladies are always kind and pleasant, even on occasion recommending products based on my current selection. They act unbothered if I ask about a product I don't know. Cons I don't really buy from the butcher, because I am a little skeptical about the butchers following of Covid regulations. I often come in and a lot of the older male employees wear the mask below their chin. Produce feels better because I always wash down my produce. I don't think I've seen anyone clean or spray down the grocery baskets. What weirds me out sometimes I'll be picking produce and some of the older men employees hover over me like they are waiting to get to something. But I know they aren't buying anything.

Yelp
So picked up about a pound of basturma from this place, lady behind the counter recommended "Try our in house Basturma", so I took her up on her offer instead of purchasing my usual go to brand. I have been eating basturma all my life, I love basturma. Unfortunately this basturma was brown and rancid at edges of all the slices with a putrid smell. The rancid edge had seeped into middle and nearly 1/3 of each strip was brown. Basturma should be pink or red in middle with cured edges near the chemen paste. If your sell anything for $22.00 per pound, you better make sure it's fresh.

Yelp
If I could be able to put zero stars I would do it because this nice grocery store that has everything you need, fresh and inexpensive, Has very poor, rude and uneducated people working there. ZERO CUSTOMER SERVICE !!!!! I wish owners can see my review. Everyone who works in the store are mentally challenged people and they really need help. If owners don't pay close attention to their employees They can get in big trouble soon.

Yelp
Really like the fresh and unique produce and home made cooked and baked goods they carry. They make traditional cheese puff pastries (not sweet) that are delicious, get there before 1 pm though to get some as they are often sold out or order ahead of time. Their Ghormeh Sabzi (Persian Herb Beef Stew) is highly recommended as well as their cold chicken salad and for that matter all of the cold salads I've tried are very good.

Yelp
this place is a gem. in addition to their amazing armenian imports (eggplant "caviar" in particular), their homemade goods are incredible. their grape leaves (sarma) are the best i've ever had. also their butter cookies are dangerously good!

Yelp
Apart from blunt Covid violations and not adhering to customer mask / crowd control policies , several health food violations observed on our first and last visit ... meat department employee touching product without gloves , wiping sweat into produce . Disgusting

Yelp
I was shopping at this store today, I end up being a witness to a conversation between the mail meat cutter and a lady customer. The customer was trying to exchange a fish that she but earlier, apparently the fish was really bad. The employe told the customer you took the fish, rutted and brought it back, the employee was so out of line and extremely rood, he was yelling loud at the customer for one fish just one, At the same time the dally lady employee was helping me, another customer walked up that she new, she put my request a side and she started helping the other customers, and then she said, what I want, she has to clean the slicer for hour.

Yelp
Love that place! Everything you need at the very reasonable price! Music is playing while we are shopping, the store is very clean and the staff members are friendly and professional! Arthur is always helpful and nice to everyone! Armen is great, always polite and knowledgeable! I highly recommend that store! Your friends and family members and obviously you guests will fall in love with the quality of food once they try it!

Yelp
They need a serious lesson in customer service here. You can get one item and go stand in front of the cashier and she will ignore you like you're not even there. Did this twice until I decided I'd rather go a block up to circle k, no hassle or attitude there.

Yelp
I rarely see anyone reviewing the same place more than once but I just felt that this place deserved it. Verdugo Deli has become one of me and hubby's fave neighborhood places to go. Everyone from the couple that owns/runs the place to the guy at the register to the little girl stocking shelves (must be a family owned/operated store) is just so courteous, helpful and accommodating and it has nothing to do with being Armenian or not (hubby and I are not Armenian). When we first started coming here last month after relocating to the area, we saw the sign in the window claiming to be the best shish kabobs in town and we thought "yeah, we'll see". Dang if they aren't pretty darn good though. We've had good lule too - Cafe Elegance in Burbank comes to mind but the lule at Verdugo Deli is pretty darn good and hubby and I get some almost every week now. Also just bought a bunch of their coffee too. Hubby loves really dark and bold coffee so I got a lb each of the Armenian, Mediterranean and Colombian coffees. Will be interesting to see which one hubby likes the best. My bet is the Armenian coffee or maybe the Mediterranean coffee. Love the gata cookies/rolls, which you don't find at many stores - gata bread yeah, everyone has that but gata cookies/rolls are not as common or popular or something. Hubby and I love them though and Verdugo Deli always has them. Anyway, we just really like this store and are so glad that its only a block from home. GREAT STORE!!!

Yelp
This review is long overdue but they deserve it! :) My family and I come here regularly for ethnic foods as my fiancee is from Eastern Europe. They have a great selection of regional foods, both fresh and pre-packaged, and yummy fresh breads (if you come after 8 AM or so,) and they have a nice selection of fresh produce. They also have some household items in case you need the everyday essentials. The ladies are always very sweet, helpful, and communicated well with me since I went in there from Day 1, even despite the fact that I am a native English speaker. I witnessed once an English-speaking man being quite rude to one of the ladies at the register but she remained sweet and kind to him. I was impressed with her customer service. I definitely recommend this store to anyone...and check out their Russian chocolates near the deli counter!

Yelp
I recently went back here to give it another try and boy was I impressed. The store is under new management and everyone is awesome! Great customer service, always willing to help. Their produce is always fresh and lasts for days after purchasing. Not only is there quality in their produce, but also in their catering. They have the most delicious kabobs. Savory and made to perfection. Their salads and appetizers are just as amazing. Highly recommend this place for all your grocery needs and kabob/appetizer cravings.

Yelp
I lived over in this area and I came to this store every other week for either Lule or produce or hummus a variety of things and mainly for coffee I find this is the least expensive it's family oriented and they just did a remodel in the last year that makes it more open. I wish I lived closer

Yelp
Wow, I'm honored to be the first to give this place a review. Well for anyone who loves Super King Market, you will also love this place. Yes it is smaller and unfortunatelly does not have a butcher. Just deli and produce. But it's as close to europe as you are going to get around here. It is truly family run, on occasion you can walk right into a colorful family fight, usually resulting in some foreign cursing and door slamming. Ahhhh feels like home. The feeling of this place is definatelly more charming the Super King, being small and all. There is a hevenly smell of coffee and almonds, they are really into their fresh almonds, and their candy bin is really cool and oldfashion looking. I always have to try a different one when I go there. Their produce is great, they always have the standard stuff in the back, fruits veggies ect. but in the front they will always display something temporary and seasonal, usually locally grown. Last time it was fresh hazelnuts, still with skin and leaves on them, and the time before that it was fresh gooseberries, the owner brought from home, only a one time thing. So cool. On a whole, it's basically the same stuff as Super King, but less congested and possibly closer to whoever lives in the highland park/eagle rock area. 07/15/2007

Yelp
I have been living in the neighborhood for almost 7 years and have been a patron on & off. It is walking distance from my house, and whenever I do go, I am impressed by the variety, quality and price of the produce. The herbs are always fresh and so fairly priced that I wonder why I ever grab them anywhere else. I need to start making it the first stop in my rotation (of Trader Joe's, Von's and Whole Foods). The family that runs and operates the place is always polite and helpful. I need to try more of what they have to offer, as I am sure -- from the cleanliness & obvious pride of ownership -- that anything they do, they do well. I love to support small business, and this one is deserving of a big fan base. I am going to do my best to become more of a regular!!

Yelp
I live down the street from this place and been there numerous times. Their fruits and veggies are always fresh and great quality too. They always have fresh garden herbs like parsley, cilantro, basil, if you're into using them, and the prices are just unbelievably low. Bunches of tarragon for so much less than rip-off places like ralphs. The only reaosn i didnt give them 5 stars is because the deli meats every now n then will be old and not as fresh, and even on that I really dont blame them. Those meats are expensive and real tough to gauge whether one batch will have buyers or not, thereby justifying shelfing them or not. I highly recommend this family owned establishment. ps. I havent been lucky enof to walk in on a family fight, if u do happen to stumble on one then write about it for some chuckles :) no they're great

Yelp
Very friendly people. The store is always clean and you practically never see any rotten items.

Yelp
I just found this place, and I've lived in this hood for 10 years!! WOW I'm happy I found it. Great spot for most of your grocery needs. Reasonable pricing, and the great small business, family owned sort of feel. Mostly Armenian spoken but I got by fine with English. The woman at the cash register and people in the deli very friendly. I love the fresh items they make, cold salads, pickles, and they also sell marinated chicken so it's ready to cook pretty much. Plus all sorts of bulk grains, nuts, dried fruits, bakery dessert items and breads, imported chocolates and cookies, honey.... I'm seriously so excited about this place.

Yelp
Asi asi. My first visit was rough, there were fruit flies everywhere, and the produce was old and rotting, and when I came home and opened my cheese, it was moldy:( BUT my recent visit the produce seemed fresher, I got some delicious Village cheese, and the people seemed nicer.

Yelp
Love this store!! The produce and deli items are always fresh, the employees are all very welcoming and friendly, prices are all reasonable and fairly priced, and most importantly the store is always very clean and spotless! I have had many great experiences at the store and have left happy every time. I also love the gourmet cheese platers which are always a hit at gatherings as well as the yummy homemade salads they make! I highly recommend this store!!!

Mike S.

Yelp
THIS PLACE IS GREAT! Just recently been coming here, and I really like this market. Honestly the fact that its always CLEAN is already pleasing . Plus they have great produce at great prices. Yelp
Everytime I shop here, I wonder why we buy certain groceries anywhere else. This place is cheaper than most grocery stores for many items, and they have some of the best potato salad out there. Just tried their marinated chicken today, and it was FANTASTIC when cooked at home. Customer service is not always the friendliest, but never rude. We are so fortunate to live so close to such a great market.

Jim S.

Yelp
I had an issue with the tall man who appeared to be the owner. He made a mockery out of my complaint about an item labeled with a price of $0.79/Pound. When I got to the cashier, she rang it for almost double per pound. At first the owner pulled the price label and said it was a mistake and replaced with the higher amount. I did not agree with him since the label originally placed was the reason I bought the item. I said that that seems to be dishonest. All the grocery stores that I go i.e. Ralph's, Smart & Final and other Armenian Ranch type markets always make good with their price and charge the customer what's posted regardless if it's was a mistake. The owner eventually refunded the difference but without making fun of me. With a boisterous voice he asked. ARE YOU HAPPY NOW. Then he picked on a pastry and asked me Here, DO You Want This. I only go to this store because it's convenient and a block away from my house. But most of the time I avoid their produce which are mostly cheap but ready to go to the trash. They sell celery that is already yellow in color and still charge $0.99 cents. Lesson learned for me, never will I step in that store, the owner is obnoxious. So customers, always check your receipt before you leave the store,
