10 Best Wineries & Tasting Rooms in Cape Town

"A conservationist’s paradise, the vast Vergelegen Estate in Somerset West, encircled by rugged mountains, is much more than a wine farm. You’ll spot nguni cattle grazing in pastures, rare protected fynbos amid the vineyards, and acres of carefully laid-out gardens dotted with mature trees. The centerpiece of the tasting center is a colossal table hewn from indigenous yellowwood, made by local designer Pierre Cronje, and the terrace overlooks a herb garden." - Jane Broughton

Vergelegen Estate

"We've only heard whisperings about this place; so can you tell us a little more about it?A conservationist’s paradise, this vast estate in Somerset West, which is encircled by rugged mountains, is much more than a wine farm. You’ll spot nguni cattle grazing in pastures, rare protected fynbos amid the vineyards, and acres of carefully laid-out gardens dotted with mature trees. The centerpiece of the tasting center is a colossal table hewn from indigenous yellowwood, made by local designer Pierre Cronje, and the terrace overlooks a herb garden. Sounds like paradise. And, who are we likely to be tapping glasses with while we're there? The 80,000 visitors a year are mostly foreign; there are increasingly more American and Asian tasters, many of whom have heard about the wines through word of mouth or international press. Got it. So we'll all be sipping on...Statuesque reds and whites, including flagship blends. Perfect—we love a big red. How about the food situation—anything worth ordering, or should we pack a snack?A formal box-hedged herb garden separates the tasting center from Stables, a popular daytime restaurant with a crowd-pleasing menu of thin-crust pizza, salads, steaks, and sandwiches. Bare French-oak tables and modern riempie benches play second fiddle to the gunshot mountain views through floor-to-ceiling glass. The grounds is also home to a color-block agapanthus garden, vineyard maze, and elaborate children’s play garden. Excellent. Anyone on staff you want to call out?Manager Frieda Stanbridge has been working here for 15 years—she has a formidable knowledge of wine. Her protegés are “hand-reared;” “you can teach wine, but you can’t teach personality or passion,” she quips. That's true! Alright, now wrap it up. Why are coming here? The wines are wonderful, but the best thing to do here is take a stroll through the seasonal displays of camellias, roses, and hydrangeas; marvel at 400-year-old camphor trees (the farm dates back to 1700); wander alongside the Lourens River; and visit the museum." - Jane Broughton

We had the wine tasting and the pic nic at Vergelegen. The pic nic is in a beautiful setting in the camphor tree forest. The food was good and I especially liked the malay chicken salad. The vichyssoise was also delicious. The diversity of food is almost too much that we thought they could reduce it a bit and focus more on the quality. All of the food was cold and not just freshly made, for example the spanakopita were out of the fridge along with everything else. It was very cold on that day and it took a while to get a blanket, they were small and not warm. The selection if wines by the glass was very disappointing for a wine farm, they aim to sell mostly bottles. The tables are also a bit close together so I think it’s good to specify if you want to be further apart. For the wine tasting, the vergelegen V was nice but for the price it’s possible to find better ones. The cap classique was nice

Vergelegen Wine Estate is absolutely beautiful! The gardens are massive and so well kept – honestly worth every bit of the R20 entry fee just to walk around and enjoy the scenery. On top of that, the wines are incredible. You can buy bottles to take home, and I picked up two reds that taste amazing. Such a stunning place to spend a day, I’d definitely recommend it.

Always a magical experience - went for a picnic with the family this year and truly felt like we were in our own little world in the forest. My glass was never empty, plate never lacking and heart never not full of joy. We make an effort to visit every year and could not recommend more!!

Went there with the intention of having breakfast at the Rose Terrace but couldn’t find it - signage is a bit vague. Landed up having a beautiful breakfast at Stables instead. Landed up spending hours wandering around the gardens and visited the library and homestead. The ladies who oversee these two areas have a wealth of knowledge and imparted so much information. It was also explained to us that the entrance fee at the gate goes toward leopard conservation - perhaps this should have been made a bit clearer at the gate. We felt it was worth every penny. Reading the reviews of people who complain about the entrance fee I am gobsmacked by the tight fistedness of people especially those who are clearly from Europe where you pay more to use a public toilet. For those who complain about certain items not being on the menu, do your homework and actually go to a restaurant that serves the items you crave. I would happily go back and pay the entrance fee knowing it is going to a good cause.

Wonderful to experience the sunflower festival. I loved that you could purchase sunflowers to take home. It may be be worthwhile to look at incorporating some "food trucks" near to the sunflower gardens since the restaurant could clearly not handle the number of guests. The parking area needs staff to help manage traffic. Lovely kids play area, picnic options would be lovely.

This is hands down one of the best wine farms in Somerset West. Whenever my family visits from overseas, it’s always at the top of their list. The estate is massive, with stunning scenery and plenty to explore. The restaurant has a fantastic breakfast and brunch selection—mimosas are a must! And if you’ve got a sweet tooth in the morning, do try the flapjacks with bacon and berry cream compote… just thinking about them is making me drool
