This was an excellent museum. I was there 3 hours and didn't see everything. The room information was in English but individual items in the rooms were not. The museum covers several topics; bishops, the castle, the town, porcelain, people who lived in the Bohemian forest and more. Great views down to the old town and the 3 rivers.

I recently visited the impressive Veste Oberhaus in Passau. Perched high above the confluence of the rivers, the views of the city were outstanding. I found the fortress itself to be an incredible historical structure, dating back to 1219, which now houses a captivating museum. The grounds are well-maintained and offer a fascinating glimpse into the past.

This is the main attraction in Passau. There is a shuttle bus to and from Romerplatz for 5£. (Well worth the time and effort to get here.) Passau is lovely, but there isn't a lot to do in the town. There is a castle museum with portraits, church-y items, and castle doo-dads. Unfortunately, the castle areas themselves are not open. I was expecting to see the museum, then tour the castle, but that's not the case. I guess it depends on your expectations, but we didn't find the museum to be expansive. There was a few chests, armor, weapons, Bibles, portraits, maps, etc. but not a lot of any one thing. Maybe not being able to enter the castle dampened our enthusiasm. We spent about 45 minutes in the museum, and another 45 minutes wandering outside. There is a restaurant with a great view. Unfortunately, it stays packed, and suffers from oktoberfest syndrome. I've found most Germans to be rather dismissive of the idea of sharing a table. After trying about 20 tables and being told no, we just left. Theoretically you can walk up to the castle, but unless you are an Olympic race walker, I wouldn't advise it. Gorgeous views of the 3 rivers, although one river is pretty dinky. Set aside several hours; more if you want to go slowly through the museum.

We crossed the bridge, walked up and took the 5 euro bus down. The walk was pleasant under the cover of trees. When the option comes to turn left or right - choose right because it's shorter. The other takes you to a youth camp and you have to walk down. The Museum is a MUST! The best Burg museum that we've visited in years. Seniors 5 Euros and 1 Euro deposit for a locker which is returned and free toilets. The collection is extensive and well curated.

Great Museum and castle, wish we had more time to explore. Otherwise great for kids under 12 they lose interest 30min inside. But I could spend all day. Really night walk if your saying in town.

Passau was a stop on our river cruise. The cruise line didn't over an excursion to Veste Oberhaus but it is definitely worth visiting. There are two options to get up the hill. One is to pay for a shuttle at $5 Euros each way. The second option is to walk up the medieval stairs to the top. Takes about 15 to 30 minutes depending on your physical ability. We saw many seniors walking up and down. The tower is a must see attraction because it offers a 360 degree observation deck that allows you to take amazing panoramic photos. The museum has many artifacts and is extensive.

This is a great place to get a bird's eye view over the city. The bus is €10 for a return trip and runs half hourly. There is also a nice restaurant with panoramic views. There are options to pay to visit the museum and/or an observation tower, but you can get good views from the terrace without paying. Well worth a visit.

We initially walked up for the view, but ended up seeing the exhibitions. It wasn’t all the text that was translated to English, but a lot was and we still enjoyed it very much!!! It was very well presented for a reasonable price!! And there were so much to see and many different exhibitions!! The staff were also very kind:) Would recommend!

Yelp
Beautiful historical castle with an excellent very comprehensive museum of Passau spanning from the beginning to present. Interestingly, however, the history that deals with Passau's WWII history is off in a separate room. Being ignorant of Passau's history during this time, I found it first amusing that it appeared to blame America's stock market crash as being the trigger that sent Germany into the arms of Hitler. Way to blame big bad America for causing them to cross that line! Even more curious however was how there was zero mention of Passau's role in the Holocaust. This wouldn't have been such a glaring omission if the museum hadn't been so beautifully detailed in every other part of ots glorious history so I was curious to find out more. And boy did I learn more! Not only were hundreds of its own residents sent to Dachau and other camps I discovered there was even an award winning book and movie written based on this rampant denialism. (Author, Anna Rosmus: "Out of Passau: Leaving a City Hitler Called Home" and Academy Award nominated "The Nasty Girl".) In her book Rosmus describes how she came face to face with evidence that common "middle-class" Catholic Passauers had committed many violent anti-Semitic crimes and faced a stubborn bureaucracy that blocked her every attempt to access archives, files, and photographs to document the atrocities. I've always been impressed by how well many other German cities and public institutions have diligently tried to come to terms with its awful past but Passau unfortunately isn't one of them.

Yelp
Perched high on the hill and visible from Passau is Veste Oberhaus also known as the Fortress Castle. You can take a shuttle bus up from the old city just about a block away from where the cruise ships dock. Cost is 2 euros each way. For two round trips it was 6.5 euros. Best deal. Dated to 1499, it is free to roam around and enjoy the structure. The views are breathtaking of the peninsula and the convergence of the two rivers. The Dom St Stephen dominates the city structures. There us a restaurant located on the third floor. It offers a full menu and the usual short list of beers and some wheats. Note...I would not try to walk up to the Castle. The road is almost straight up for just under two miles. Also it is a tight road with no shoulders and very curved.

Yelp
Wonderful castle complex with astounding views of Passau. Either a decent hike up stairs or a reasonably priced van that runs often. The stairs are in good condition with a few slopes. There are multiple view points and a tower for €1 which was well worth it. In addition to the beautiful views there is a beer garden with breathtaking views and enough beer to wet any whistle.
