"Once you take in the gorgeous natural scenery along this 382-mile trip, you’ll forget the drab industrial landscape of Sudbury, 250 miles north of Toronto. From there, the nine-hour train trip takes you along the southern edge of Ontario’s immense boreal forest while traveling past sparkling lakes and rivers, along with the roaring Onaping Falls. Guest stars along the way will likely include the bears, moose, and beavers who call this part of the province home. The trip ends at White River, a onetime rail town that dates back to 1885. Where to stay: Chain hotels predominate in Sudbury; your best bet is the Radisson Hotel Sudbury in downtown’s giant Elm Place mixed-use development. Centrally located, it features a well-equipped fitness center, heated pool, and low-key rooms outfitted in mustard and brown."

Unfortunately, the classic train station that is very under serviced by Via. it had an almost forgotten feeling to it. We enjoyed looking around it while we were waiting for the white river train. I would not be comfortable leaving my vehicle there for several days if I were taking the train up into the bush. The building itself is quite literally surrounded on a daily basis by drug use, and sketchy people. We stayed at a nearby hotel, and they delivered us to the train station in a cab rather than leaving our vehicle there. The hotel it was very good about us parking in their parking lot.

Train to White River leaves from here, returns the next day to Sudbury. These are Budd Cars. Bring your own snacks and beverages. The wilderness views are amazing. Stay at the Continental Hotel in White River. 15 min walk.

Some pluses and some minuses, the first plus would be the price. Was very reasonable to get to Toronto and we arrived in Toronto 2 hours and 15 minutes earlier than estimated which made me very happy. Once I got on the train I noticed a lot of people were sound asleep. Of course it was 4:45 in the morning 🌅 So I got my seat and it was pretty comfortable. I sat in a seating area where there was two seats. Some had four two and two facing each other. People were sprawled out all over sound asleep. I slept for about an hour and then I woke up about 7:45 and wanted to look outside to see the view but most of the partitions were pulled down over the window so you couldn't see out so I left in mine slightly just to look out and then about an hour I raised it a bit more so I could have a better view of the people behind me pulled it down to sleep but I figured around 9:00 it was reasonable for me to be able to look out and have enjoy the view. One thing I didn't realize was there's no Wi-Fi. I didn't realize that at all so I had to use my data so it was an expensive trip as far as that goes lots of slowdowns and stops. We still got two Toronto much earlier than it expected. I couldn't understand how it normally takes 9 and 1/2 hours to get from Sudbury to Toronto but was willing to go through that as the price was very good at around $85 one way. Probably will do this again but really why does this train not have Wi-Fi.?? If it did it would make things a lot better for a lot of people. I was not aware of that. They have a club car that has breakfast after 6:30 all in all a decent trip

Very exciting trip. Staff was well organized and very accommodating. Still operating the Bud cars to access the Spanish River system is an interesting part of history. Spectacular scenery!

Traveled the Budd Car from Cartier to Sinker Creek. The staff were very professional, level-headed, and kind. Lise, the engineer, and the rest of the crew were awesome and I was impressed with their composure (in dealing with one particularly abusive and aggressive passenger) and thoughtfulness, that I felt that they needed a special review and commendation. Thank you for an awesome passage and we look forward to using Via rail again, because of this crew!

Amazing Ride! Beautiful scenery all along. Big shout out to the VIa Rail crew. Conductor Robin, and the train engineers- Ryan and Derek, who despite the late departure from White River, was able to make it Sudbury with little delay. Highly professional and dedicated crew.

I am a huge fan of the Sudbury station. It is a professional and friendly line to White River on the Budd Car. See yourself there some Saturday at 9 am.
