Review update: so lately the food has not been that good. Different people making things? Tomatoe pie has been very stale and dry.
Wife who has Celiac, loved the gluten free calzone the first time she got it and last few times, until last night. She said it was completely tasteless and the dough was almost bitter. Was she served bad/expired gluten free dough that it was bitter? She ended up throwing 3/4 of it away. I got a cheesesteak for the first time ever from here. While it did taste good, it was really the most pathetic cheesesteak I’ve ever gotten from anywhere. It was completely all roll with barely any meat in it. For $10 I expect better. You can literally get a cheesesteak from a place like Meatheadz for $14 who serves fresh ribeye and a pound of it in every sandwich. This sandwich literally only had about 4 oz of meat spread out on the roll. I would never order this again.
Ok, first off, this place, I’ve lived 5 minutes from for practically over 30 years. How long they’ve been there, I have no idea. I’ve driven by plenty times with a glance but never cared to stop in. I recently saw a post on the Facebook group “Jersey Pizza Joints” referencing ties of this place to Papa’s Tomato Pies and how good they were when they stopped in for them. So I had to go and try them out. I stopped in and ordered a sausage and garlic Trenton tomato pie. Which I was told by the guy their tomato pies already have garlic. Cool, just add the sausage. Also ordered a plain Trenton tomato pie. I will say it’s probably been a good year or two that I last had a Papa’s pie for memory comparison but OMG! These pies were tremendous!! Cooked perfect, thin, crisp, great flavor and absolutely delicious! Kudos to whoever it was that made my pies! I posted this review and pics on the Facebook group because this place deserves recognition. I’m no one special but every little bit helps to get the word out! Via Roma gained a new customer!
