Where to Stay in Oaxaca on Your Trip (Updated 2025)

"Just a 10-minute walk to the main square, this social hostel has a chill rooftop bar with panoramic city views—perfect for relaxing, enjoying a delicious breakfast, or sipping local Mexican cocktails at sunset. The beds are comfy with thick mattresses and dorms have privacy curtains so you can sleep decently; there are even female-only dorms for added privacy and security. There’s always something going on here—food tours, mezcal tastings, and more—so it’s easy to meet other travelers. The on-site restaurant offers vegetarian options, and it’s my go-to hostel in the city." - Matthew Kepnes

Don’t let the aesthetic appearance fool you because this is not designed for comfort nor functionality. Waste of money and the worst Viajero I’ve stayed at. The fact that they haven’t addressed the issue of hot rooms and crappy wifi from reviews posted a year ago shows zero care towards basic guest needs and expectations. The dorm rooms are extremely stuffy and hot, with small fans that circulate the hot air. The only way to aid this is to keep the door wide open which means loss of privacy and security. Tiny kitchen, barely any tables and chairs available to sit and eat your food. In saying this, the common area in the lobby and the rooftop are usually preoccupied by people who want to use the internet because it doesn’t work in the rooms! Choice of seating/couches in the lobby are horrible - hard, uncomfortable and a waste of space with the unused ping pong table in the middle. There’s really no place to chill out comfortably if you need a day off. QR code with all information on tours that the hostel provides has outdated prices. Don’t be shocked when you sign up at the reception and have to pay more. Staff are nice which has graciously avoided this place from being rated 1-star.

One of my worst hostel experiences in Latin America. Oaxaca has many other options at the same price that are much better. From the moment I arrived, the staff was unfriendly. I specifically booked this hostel because of the rooftop, but when I got there it was closed. When I asked why, they simply said “it is what it is.” The hostel is located on a very noisy avenue with no soundproofing at all. I booked a private room, which was right next to the reception, so I could hear everything. To make things worse, at 7 a.m. someone was sweeping very loudly right outside my window. As a traveler and a true lover of Oaxaca, I honestly recommend looking for other options in the city.

Great location of the hostel! Entering the building it felt incredibly beautiful - historical building and with a nice open and speciations resection and common place to rest. High ceilings, great roof top - they provide free welcome drink first night. And it’s a great place to meet people.

Incredible, I felt at home, when I arrived I was very friendly, Kaori is very nice. I recommend having a mezcal on the terrace with an incredible view of the town and the music is ideal. The bed is very comfortable and the location allows you to go for a walk and get to know the Oaxacan culture.

Great location, the private room was very comfortable and had both a ceiling fan and standing fan to combat stuffiness. We also took a day tour to Hierve el Agua and it was really fun. The staff were amazing (especially Dany, he’s a superstar) and the social vibe on the rooftop bar was incredible. Highly recommend!! We’re sad we only stayed here for two nights.

Great beds with space for personal items and aircon. Reception is 24hrs and the staff are super friendly and helpful. They offer great tours and the terrace has the best view of Oaxaca. It’s also a really social hostel.

Had a lovely time at viajero in Oaxaca. Was a chill vibe but lots of opportunities to be social and lots of activities! I did the Hierve del Agua tour with Dany and it was well worth it!! Dany did a great job and it was so fun. Would definitely return sometime in the future 🫶
