Inside Ananda, the Himalayan Wellness Retreat Offering a Unique Spin on Ayurveda | Vogue

"As the main reception building and former seat of the Maharaja of Tehri Garhwal, this space houses yoga spaces, a historic billiards room, and the grand Viceregal Suite; I’m told King Charles II once tried to stay there, but his security needs meant he could only inhabit one of the private villas." - Lara Johnson-Wheeler

A stunning heritage landmark set on top of a quiet hill, the Viceregal Lodge is one of the finest examples of British-era architecture in the region 🙂🏰 The grand stone structure, manicured lawns and wide open surroundings give it a royal, old-world charm that instantly transports you back in time. Inside, the place functions as a museum, showcasing historic photographs, documents and artefacts related to the British period and India’s political history 📜📚 The wooden interiors, vintage furniture and preserved halls feel elegant and deeply atmospheric — a real treat for history lovers. The peaceful gardens, cool breeze and sweeping mountain views make the entire visit relaxing and visually beautiful 🌲🌄 Whether you're exploring the museum or just walking around the estate, the experience feels calm, enriching and truly memorable ✨🌿

Visited as part of a Group Tour but for the tour of the rooms inside we had a well presented ,clearly spoken local guide. One can only view a few rooms on the ground flood and the hallway areas as this is not merely a museum of British Raj rule but has been repurposed into the Indian Institute of Advanced Study The architecture is a stunning example of building with quality materials to last through the ages ,although vacated after the last resident left ,this remains, sitting proudly at the end of the escarpment ,with a marvellous view and surrounded by gardens and trees. Had I not been with a Group I would have lingered longer in the gardens Inside the ceilings of cedar are solid and upkept well Clean toilets on site to the left of the visitor centre entrance No photos allowed inside

The Viceregal Lodge in Shimla is one of those places that instantly takes you back in time. The moment you step inside, you’re surrounded by extraordinary architecture, intricate woodwork, and an atmosphere that reflects the grandeur of the British era. The building itself is absolutely stunning — every corridor, staircase, and room tells a story of its own. The lush gardens outside and the panoramic views from the hilltop add even more charm to the visit. We took the guided tour, which was informative and helped us understand the historical significance of each section of the lodge. However, I personally felt that the tour was a bit rushed. Even though the guide mentioned that we could take our time, we were quickly moved from one room to another. I would have loved to pause longer and really soak in the details — the furniture, the photos, and the artifacts that make this place so special. Despite that, it’s a must-visit attraction in Shimla. The architecture alone makes it worth the trip, and if you’re someone who appreciates history, art, or old-world charm, you’ll definitely enjoy it here. I’d recommend visiting early in the day to truly take in its beauty and peaceful surroundings.

Rashtrapati Niwas in Shimla, also known as the Presidential Retreat, is a historic 174-year-old estate in Mashobra that now serves as a summer retreat for the President of India and is open to the public. Visitors can experience the grandeur of the main building with its British-era furnishings and history, explore the beautifully landscaped gardens, walk on nature trails through the surrounding forest, and enjoy panoramic views from the Kalyani Helipad. The site is open from Tuesday to Sunday, 10 AM to 6 PM, and is closed on Mondays and public holidays.

Situated at 2.5 kms from Shimla railway station, this used to the de-facto power base in India during the British times for 8 months. The first building in Shimla to get electricity, it also saw time as Independent India's first President House for around a decade. Guided tours are available but too many people are stuffed in them and one can't properly appreciate the amount of history (usually in form of images and lettering). A proper way would be to let people go in and browse at their own leisure. Alas, one can't have that. Only the ground floor is accessible (4 odd rooms) to public. There is a lawn and small garden outside as well.

The Viceregal Lodge, also known as the Rashtrapati Niwas, is one of Shimla’s most magnificent and historically rich landmarks. Perched on Observatory Hill, this grand Scottish-style mansion was once the summer residence of the British Viceroy of India — a place where many important decisions shaping modern India were made. Built in 1888, the architecture is a masterpiece of grey stone walls, intricate woodwork, and lush gardens that overlook the hills. Every corridor inside tells a story — from the polished teak interiors to the grand staircase that echoes the footsteps of history. The guided tour gives fascinating insights into the colonial era, showing original furniture, photographs, and relics from the time when Shimla was the summer capital of British India. Outside, the lawns are perfectly manicured, offering breathtaking views and a serene atmosphere ideal for slow walks and reflection. Whether you’re a history lover, architecture enthusiast, or simply someone who appreciates timeless beauty, the Viceregal Lodge is a must-visit in Shimla.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ — Stunning History & Architecture I recently visited the Viceroy’s Lodge and it was one of the best sights in Shimla. The grand British-era architecture, peaceful lawns, and beautiful views make it perfect for photos. The guided tour inside is short but very informative, giving a glimpse of important events from India’s history. A calm, well-maintained, and must-visit heritage spot.

The Indian Institute of Advanced Study (IIAS) is a research institute in Shimla, housed in the former Viceregal Lodge, a must visit Historical place..built between 1884 and 1888 as the summer residence for the Viceroy of India. After India's independence, the lodge was renamed Rashtrapati Niwas (President's House). Loads of jaw dropping advanced features built e.g. Concealed Electrical wiring, advanced Fire fighting system, 200 years old working pendulum, walnut interiors. etc... Its amazing..!! It also contains rare archives, If you are visiting Shimla and keep interest in History...a must must visit. PS - Photography inside the building is prohibited.
