The main things that Vic's has going for it seem to be nostalgia, an old-fashioned ice cream parlor experience, and a simple, no-frills menu. If you're looking for a hipster ice cream spot with crazy flavors, this isn't it. But man, if I had come here as a kid with my grandparents, or if I want to feel like I'm dining at an old movie set, this is that place for nostalgic, warm feelings.
Being an avid ice cream lover, I've tried the town staples of Leatherby's and Gunther's and wanted to see how Vic's held up to the other two. I'd say their ice cream is on par with Leatherby's but Gunther's is a better, richer quality. Leatherby's also seems to have more dessert creation options. But I do appreciate the simplicity of what Vic's offers.
We got BLTs on sourdough, which we found the most appealing from their very basic menu of ham, turkey, grilled cheese, hotdogs, egg salad, and garden burgers, etc. The sandwiches came with potato chips (the kind with ridges). The bread was perfectly toasted, the tomatoes and lettuce were fresh, and there was plenty of bacon - they didn't skimp at all. It was a well-executed, no-frills sandwich.
For dessert, we got a double dish of Butter Toffee and Peanut Butter Cup. My toddler got a mini scoop of Cookie Dough, which was the perfect portion for him. Both ice creams were served in glass dishes/cups on ceramic plates with long-handled silver spoons. It's exactly what I picture when I think of ice cream parlors. The ice cream tastes like regular Dreyer's ice cream, basically something that I could purchase from the store. It's got an average amount of air churned into it, so it's more light than it is rich and heavy. The peanut butter and the toffee pieces weren't as plentiful as I was hoping for. I'm a huge fan of mix-ins in every bite, and this ice cream didn't provide that.
Huge props to their employees! They were nice and attentive and kept filling our water cups. There was an issue with an unreasonable and ornery customer in the booth next to us, but the employee handled it as smoothly as possible. Well done!
The main things that are keeping me from wanting to return are their run-of-the-mill ice cream and the reality that I can probably make their sandwiches at home. When I go out to eat, I want something special that's not easy for me to replicate.
