"Tucked away in the tree-lined Land Park neighborhood of Sacramento, Vic’s has been a community favorite for generations. Opened in 1947, this ice cream parlor and diner retains its original post-war atmosphere. When you take a seat at the counter, it’s easy to imagine you’re on a movie set, complete with a black-and-white checkered floor and a row of milkshake blenders. In addition to handmade ice cream, malts, and sandwiches, they serve phosphates. A phosphate is a soft drink, but instead of using carbonated water, it has a bit of acid phosphate to give it a tangy zip. Originally promoted as health tonics in the 1860s, phosphates fell out of favor with the decline of fountain drinks and the advent of bottled soda. Vic’s is one of the few places that still serves this beverage. While retro-themed diners have been around for decades, Vic’s is the real deal. So don’t be surprised to find a line of people outside waiting to cool off with some old-school refreshments. None" - Jeremy D

Want to be transported back in time? You absolutely need to stop at Vic's ice cream shop in East Sacramento. There is a small adjacent parking lot and plenty of street parking around. Expect somewhat long lines on warm weekends. You can also grab a seat at the counter or a booth. There is limited seating. They have a small menu of hot food items, but what they're known for are their desserts and ice cream! I got a small sunday of strawberry cheesecake ice cream with hot caramel and fresh pineapple with a cherry and whipped cream. Delicious! Their top Seller is the chocolate mint ice cream which smells heavenly of mint. All their ice cream is made fresh in house. They also have a secret menu. Ask for the suicide drink next time. This is a great nostalgic local shop that's been around since 1947.

Google
First time here but came with a Sacramento local who used to work here 20 years ago. It was a perfect ice cream shop. We had a hot dog sandwich for nostalgia that was pretty good and exactly how you imagine it. The ice cream was really good and the service was amazing.

Robin Curry

Google
The best ice cream in Sacramento! This historic ice cream parlor opened in the 1940’s and is a Sacramento staple. They serve a variety of sandwiches as well as an array of ice creams. So cute, and so tasty!

Entering this old-fashioned ice cream parlor is like stepping back in time. The decor hasn't changed much since it opened in 1947. Delicious ice cream, milk shakes and ice cream cakes are completed by hit drinks and grilled sandwiches. There are only five booths, first come first served. Fast and friendly service. Highly recommended if you visit Sacramento.

Google
This place is a very interesting little shop. The waitresses are friendly, and the milkshakes are fantastic here! However, the chipotle garden burger fell short of expectations for the following reasons. First, it was not an actual burger but a sandwich. Secondly, the meat inside the burger was good but it can be odd to a person that is not used to eating that style of patty. My personal suggestions for milkshakes are the mocha almond fudge and the blackberry marble.

Google
This was our first time here and ir was GREAT! The staff is super nice and helpful. I had a kiddie cone and it was a big serving. My bf had a chocolate milkshake and he said it was really good. We really appreciated the service we received at Vic's.

Jenny Lucero

Google
The best ice cream! I had the chocolate peanut butter it was absolutely amazing. I live in Napa and am planning to drive back to get a pint to take home 😋

Marie Chevalier

Google
Amazing hand crafted ice cream. The cherry amaretto and fudge ribbon were amazing.

Shannon O.

Yelp
Best ice cream in town. Love the hotdog sandwiches. My mother came here as a young child, and then she continued the tradition by bringing me. Every time we would come to spend the summers with my grandmother from San Francisco we would always make a stop at Vic ice cream for the best mint chip in town.

Esca N.

Yelp
Great little American diner in a quiet part of downtown Sacramento. Parking is in the residential area. We had no problems finding a spot on a rainy Sunday morning. We enjoyed our ice cream, sandwiches, and coffee. The staff were friendly and attentive. It's a wonderful spot for couples, families, ect I would highly recommend visiting!

Yelp
I've had Vic's in the past and it is really good. We were disappointed to arrive at 6pm on Saturday 1/27/2024 and found it closed. Yelp said open until 9pm. Inside the chairs were up on the tables and the place was deserted. Next time!

Shelly S.

Yelp
Finally got to try this place out after wanting to for so long! Went on a Friday afternoon, and it was busy as it usually looked, but we were able to find seating quickly. Everyone was so friendly, and service was very quick. Cute little old school styled ice cream parlor. They also have a menu of non ice cream items! I got my classic go to rocky road, and it was so delicious. The right amount of thickness and creaminess. Highly recommend for your next ice cream craving!

Cyn D.

Yelp
Vic's is down the street from me, fun place to eat because it gives you the old diner feel and you're transported back into time. Definitely known for their ice cream, American classic diner style food. The clam chowder is delicious, but the tuna sandwich and hot dog cheese and corn beef, is just way too salty, super unhealthy and not something you ear daily, maybe when you get the craving once every blue moon. It's your old mom n pop diner, if you want to take the kids to get a quick bite to eat or have a few scoops of ice cream. It gets really warm inside. Not much air flow, but they do have a few seats outside. Great customer service.

Morgan S.

Yelp
Five stars just for Elijah's service alone. I've came here for the past four months and he's always in a great mood, checks in with a smile and just over all a good dude. Thank you for the awesome hospitality man!! The Rueben is addictive

Laurie M.

Yelp
This quaint historical landmark in the heart of the old Land Park neighborhood will always be one of my favorites. The menu hasn't changed in probably 50 years - I had the cheezedog sandwich on sourdough served toasted (or not) with mustard, Mayo and lettuce. All sandwiches include Ruffle style potato chips. My friend had the corned beef sandwich cold and a chocolate malt - both a throwback to the 1970's when she hung out here after school. I recommend to leave before school is out because, not only does the interior resemble it's 1960's days of old, so does it's patrons. It's a safe and reasonably priced parlor for the middle school and high school kids to flock. Parking is free on the streets.

Helen L.

Yelp
Recently tried Vic's for the first time. There's a lot of flavors to choose from. I got the toasted almond and butter brittle. I love how the toasted almond had a lot of almonds; other creameries I've tried the toasted almond icecream are skimpy with the almonds but not Vic's! The butter brittle was good too. My niece got the salted caramel and said she likes it. The staff are friendly and helpful. They have both indoor and outdoor seating, and they also have a food menu along with their icecream menu.

Davianne R.

Yelp
Omg! I wanted ice cream so bad and my husband I yelped for help! I'm so glad! The service was great! And the shop was clean.

Sarah K.

Yelp
Friendly employees, huge single scoops, but as far as flavor goes, I would go to Gunther's.

Daisy P.

Yelp
I cute little shop, ice cram is great, only downside is the older gentleman that works there is not very nice to his employees.

Jay C.

Yelp
Been coming here for over a decade, I love this place. Sadly I've noticed it's gone down hill the last couple years. I walked in today with a couple buddies and was hit by the smell of rotting milk. This place is a staple in the community, they just need a good professional deep clean. The ice cream is so good, and I hope to keep coming here. My favorite flavor is mocha chip, must try. Hope this place stays up, I have many good memories coming here.

Hennessey N.

Yelp
Even as a Burr's kid I have to give credit where credit is due. A slice of nostalgia. Can't beat a cheese dog, lime Ricky & a sundae. Don't forget your red sauce.

Tom M.

Yelp
This place is what's special about Sacramento. I'm not sure how old the restaurant is, but it's been there my whole life. And where the ice cream enticed me as a kid, it's the food and the company that has kept me coming back through the decades. This is easily one of the most underrated sandwich places around with smaller lunch portions for a reasonable price and a number of little delicious treats to go along with it.

Heidi C.

Yelp
Good milkshakes and good sandwiches If you ever go to Sacramento go to Vic's Ice Cream

Amy T.

Yelp
I love the strawberry ice cream pie, it's a tradition for my family to get it for every thanksgiving or Christmas celebration. I just tried the pineapple milkshake today and found it quite lovely. I haven't tried any of their food yet, so I'll have to return to try that!

Sam H.

Yelp
Get the hot dog sandwich and toss the chips into it. Super nostalgic, great ice cream. Everyone there is super nice. Small place but it's kind of fun to cram in around a bunch of other people having a good time.

Justine O.

Yelp
Good ice cream, but the service is terrible. These kids need better training. They lack customer service and there's zero urgency. Customers are waiting to be helped and they're talking behind the counter. Cleanliness has also gone downhill. Very sad!

Mido Z.

Yelp
Sandwiches still good. Asked for no mayo but they put it on. Waited 20 minutes for sandwiches but it was worth it. Some Staff are not practicing good hygiene methods ie touching hair, ears. Ode and not washing their hands. He wasn't my server thank goodness!!! Tin roof ice cream felt gritty not creamy Cherry amaretto was good as usual

Shadamy L.

Yelp
Im sorry but i went to Vics icecream because this place was very memorable to me. But going in now the ambiance and service is extremely terrible. Took a little over 10 minutes to get my order taken when there wasnt a lot of people in there. And when the order was taken only part of it was given. The workers were socializing in the back more than helping customers. And NOT once did i see any of them wash their hands. Im very upset about this experience. They can do much better.

Janet S.

Yelp
Old-Fashioned, local spots like these definitely need more recognition. I believe Vic's is undoubtedly out shined by its competitor Gunther's ice cream, but Vic's is amazing too. This diner felt like something from a vintage movie. Nostalgic. Because no matter how old you get, there's always room for ice cream, right? Vic's remind me of a homey version of Mel's. Vic's has hearty foods like sandwiches, hot dogs, and burgers. Most importantly, they have ice cream. Tons of ice cream. I forgot if I asked for a single or double scoop of cookies and cream ice cream and they sure were generous about it. It filled my entire soda cup. Definitely enough for two. I had dessert before dinner when I visited, and I couldn't eat my dinner because I was so full. I recommend checking out this family friendly place.

caryl r.

Yelp
Stopped by Vic's in the hopes of having a small dinner. Spent 30 minutes waiting for a sandwich that was delivered by a server who said, sorry we are out of chips, we can take a dollar off your bill. When I informed him I had already paid, the staff said oh well maybe we will just give you a dollar or something. No resolution to this issue before I left. Not sure who is managing the Saturday crew, but it may be time for a chat about customer service. I'll be sticking with the ice cream and taking it to go.

Stacy S.

Yelp
Such a bummer. Used to be the best place to go for a hot dog and a shake. Went there with our daughter expecting the nostalgic experience. But it wasn't there! It was run by high school kids which would have been fine if there had been at least one adult supervising - but alas - no one in sight! After waiting for our food for an hour and watching the horror show with our own eyes, we're were told they had run out of hot dogs. Then they started running out of everything. One kid was cooking on the grill and the rest were doing ice cream. People were coming in to puck up their to-go orders and being told they were out of hot dogs and other things. People were getting passed off right and left , screaming at the kids which is the only reason I am taking pity in them and giving 2 stars. Food was subpar - won't go back!

Yelp
The main things that Vic's has going for it seem to be nostalgia, an old-fashioned ice cream parlor experience, and a simple, no-frills menu. If you're looking for a hipster ice cream spot with crazy flavors, this isn't it. But man, if I had come here as a kid with my grandparents, or if I want to feel like I'm dining at an old movie set, this is that place for nostalgic, warm feelings. Being an avid ice cream lover, I've tried the town staples of Leatherby's and Gunther's and wanted to see how Vic's held up to the other two. I'd say their ice cream is on par with Leatherby's but Gunther's is a better, richer quality. Leatherby's also seems to have more dessert creation options. But I do appreciate the simplicity of what Vic's offers. We got BLTs on sourdough, which we found the most appealing from their very basic menu of ham, turkey, grilled cheese, hotdogs, egg salad, and garden burgers, etc. The sandwiches came with potato chips (the kind with ridges). The bread was perfectly toasted, the tomatoes and lettuce were fresh, and there was plenty of bacon - they didn't skimp at all. It was a well-executed, no-frills sandwich. For dessert, we got a double dish of Butter Toffee and Peanut Butter Cup. My toddler got a mini scoop of Cookie Dough, which was the perfect portion for him. Both ice creams were served in glass dishes/cups on ceramic plates with long-handled silver spoons. It's exactly what I picture when I think of ice cream parlors. The ice cream tastes like regular Dreyer's ice cream, basically something that I could purchase from the store. It's got an average amount of air churned into it, so it's more light than it is rich and heavy. The peanut butter and the toffee pieces weren't as plentiful as I was hoping for. I'm a huge fan of mix-ins in every bite, and this ice cream didn't provide that. Huge props to their employees! They were nice and attentive and kept filling our water cups. There was an issue with an unreasonable and ornery customer in the booth next to us, but the employee handled it as smoothly as possible. Well done! The main things that are keeping me from wanting to return are their run-of-the-mill ice cream and the reality that I can probably make their sandwiches at home. When I go out to eat, I want something special that's not easy for me to replicate.

Martin C.

Yelp
Have always loved Vic's. Have been in the neighborhood for decades and it's a go to for lunch. And a go to for an ice cream pie to have at home or take to a dinner, one of our special things to do ...but not anymore. You can't go to Vics and get an ice cream pie without ordering ahead. It's not Vic's as we know it anymore

Mary R.

Yelp
Been coming to Vic's for 65 years; since I was an infant!! They make the best ice cream, sandwiches and shakes. We love the coffee shakes!

Veronica R.

Yelp
Vic's ice cream is the best there is. Having a sandwich for lunch and ice cream for dessert is the best combo. The only bad part is the one girl that is making the sandwiches. Shes working her butt off making all the sandwiches and the other kids are standing around. They scoop some ice cream and walk around looking like they are busy. Might need to have a manager re think some help for the food person during a rush. An egg salad and a hot dog took 30 min. to get. I thought it was basic so it could be fast. Anyways, I've been coming to Vic's for ove 30 years and won't stop coming. I just want to give some constructive criticism to whoever might care.

Mia P.

Yelp
Vic's ice cream is a place I go to about every week. The workers are very nice and I get ice cream right away! Personally the reviews I've seen dont describe Vic's. I've been there several times in the past few years. I love the looks and how clean the place is. Overall very enjoyable, people just have high expectations.

Craig W.

Yelp
This is a classic, old school restaurant and ice cream shop. Lots of locals come here. Park on the street. Our service was great. The workers all looked to be around high school age and, for what it is worth, they were all polite, attentive and friendly. We had a ham and cheese sandwich and, of course, a couple of different scoops of ice cream. The prices are very fair and the food was good. There is nothing flashy or spectacular about this place. They serve good ice cream and good food at fair prices which is probably how they have been doing it the last 70 years or so. It apparently works for them and it definitely works for me.

Ruby C.

Yelp
Discovered this location when I moved to the pocket neighbor about 4 years ago and we always come to this location every spring and summers. Less crowed than Gunters ice creams On franklin blvd and it's near my home, so I don't have to drive further out and offers their ice cream. The staff is always friendly. I just wish it was a bit bigger that's ok, I'll try to go in when it's not so busy

Kristian D.

Yelp
Vic's Ice Cream is a classic ice cream parlor in Land Park with a wide variety of handmade treats. They have been here longer than most of the surrounding businesses and many of the homes! Parking is limited to scarce and permitted street parking on the corner of Riverside and 8th Avenue. Vic's and Gunther's are the big competitors in the old part of Sacramento. Gunther's is very popular and has wide distribution, but Vic's retains the classic parlor experience including a lunch counter with sandwiches. Ice cream is the star here with cones, sandwiches, sundaes, and more. The base is nice and creamy and holds up well to the flavors. Servings are large and a decent value. They can get very crowded during a heat wave making eating inside nearly impossible. Fortunately they are close to Land Park for a nice walk. This is really more of a neighborhood ice cream parlor for the Land Park area. Vic's has tough parking and is very popular, but there is a reason why everyone comes here. Their ice cream is really good, classic and worth a trip.

Bea J.

Yelp
Why would they close early?? Ice cream is delicious!! But we can never get to it after school and work. Just wish they'd stay open longer. Forced to go to Gunthers.

Christen V.

Yelp
I like the employees, especially the women. very pretty and very nice. I enjoy coming to vics.

Sebastian T.

Yelp
You'll get better ice cream at Gunther if you're looking for great tasting ice cream.

Candace Y.

Yelp
Tasty, in-house made ice cream served up by a friendly, hardworking staff is always a treat whenever I stop at Vic's. Vic's has been a staple in the Sacramento ice cream world. It's so well-known and popular that there're always patrons inside enjoying the good food selections and especially the ice cream. Even though a large tree growing on Riverside Blvd covers up the signage as you're passing by on that street, people know where Vic's is. It's been well-established in the community for decades. It's one of Sacramento's authentically old-fashioned malt shop establishments where a hungry kid after school can fill up on sandwiches and other foods in the middle of the day. Request 2 scoops of ice cream and they'll serve it dished into a big paper cup. Stick 2 long handled spoons inside and you have a romantic date cup for sharing. The ice cream is of the best quality and is simply delicious.

Jackson T.

Yelp
I'm gonna go ahead and say it. I prefer vics over gunthers. The long wait at gunthers has always been a turnoff for me. Thank goodness vics is here. I found out about vics about 15 years ago when I was in middle school. I had an awesome teacher who would treat me and a few friends to ice cream and lunch. The rest is history. I've had a variety of flavors here over the years and I can say I've never been disappointed. They have seasonal flavors that you should try. I even brought some friends and family here and they love the ice cream. This pace can get busy as well, but the line is never as crazy as gunthers. I hope this doesn't change since this is almost like a hidden gem. The staff are great also. They have excellent service and are fast with helping customers with their orders. Vics has booths to sit in and is joined to the cafe next door, which is where I usually eat my ice cream since all the booths are usually filled. Overall, I would pick this over gunthers any day.

Melodie L.

Yelp
Stumbled upon Vic's Ice Cream because Gunther's was closed. My dentist suggested ice cream after my dentist appt today so I figured why not!?? So glad we did. Vic's has a mom and pop ice cream shop feel and their portions are generous. Flavor wise they compete with Gunther's and they have a good variety to choose from I tried the peanut butter cup and the French vanilla. Great flavor. Smooth consistency and it's not too sweet. Overall great find. Will def come back.

Phillip F.

Yelp
It's filthy in there. Dirty dishes in back and on tables, cashiers do not wash hands and begin making food. They need to get their act together

Ginger W.

Yelp
I've gone here for more than 40 years. Their seasonal ice cream flavors are outstanding. The boysenberry sherbet is fantastic and well worth the purple stains on my clothes. Their cranberry sherbet means Christmas is here! And their pumpkin is a family favorite. All delicious! I recently had my first cheese dog sandwich in 20+ years and it was as delicious as I remember. It wonderful to find that somethings you love haven't changed! They are way better than Gunther's ice cream, in my very educated ice cream opinion.

Jennifer M.

Yelp
We've been here several times. The two stars are for the ice cream, It's good, but the service is terrible. They make you feel like you're interrupting their day. My MIL asked for a hot fudge Sunday. They said "we don't have any hot fudge, out machine is broken." She voiced her sadness and how excited she was to have a hot fudge Sunday. She said, "I guess I'll just do a root beer float". Less than five minutes later they made a hot fudge Sunday for another table. My MIL asked about it, and the guy said "yeah, I got it fixed". Seriously?!? It took less than five minutes for them to fix it and they could have offered to give her a hot fudge Sunday to go, or not charged for the RBF that she really didn't want to begin with! Maybe an, "oh hey, it's working I know you just got the float, but can we get you the Sunday you originally wanted?" They were not busy, so there was no reason the five people standing around shooting the poop couldn't have given us excellent service. When you feel like more of a bother than a customer you're not super excited to come back.

Sid H.

Yelp
Enjoyed ice cream with our boys this evening at Vic's. I really like the selection of their ice cream. The service is great and the ice cream is very tasty! We all had different flavors of ice cream ( cherry amaretto, chocolate almond fudge, peppermint, and chocolate) all tasted great after a long day at the Sacramento Zoo. Vic's is our go to in the land park area!!

Rayna G.

Yelp
The service at the cafe was EXCEPTIONAL!! They are very kind and I immediately felt welcomed by the staff upon arrival. The atmosphere is a very calm place that is perfect for studying, relaxing or catching up with friends, especially when paired with an iced chai with many spices. I will definitely be returning again :) thanks for a great experience

Nicole N.

Yelp
Came to Vics after randomly meeting the owner getting our vaccines. He praised the food and staff so we decided to go try it out. I have to say he was being modest. When we arrived the line for food was around the building. My husband commented that the strawberry sherbet was the best he ever had and his sandwich hit the spot. My father enjoyed his milkshake and BLT and I loved the fresh carved Turkey sandwich (not deli roll Turkey) and the dressing they put on it. YUM Quick service and definitely worth the wait! We 'll be back!

Trang P.

Yelp
Been coming for over a decade and the quality has stayed consistent. Cherry amaretto, please!

Valerie L.

Yelp
As an octogenarian who grew up at Vic's I know what their standard of food and service were. Sadly, both have degraded severely . Our service was poor, the food was poorly prepared, and too many items on the menu were unavailable. Our milkshakes were thin and airy....certainly not the Vic's ice cream shakes of the past. Good by Vic's.....so sad.

Neil G.

Yelp
Excellent Ice Cream. Bad service. During Covid-19 sanitation should be paramount. This restaurant is serving food with sidewalk dining. When asked about a restroom (after purchasing food) I was told it's closed because they don't have a restroom. Their customers can use the restroom next door in the cafe, which at that time of day was closed. This is a health code violation. "Clean and sanitize customer restrooms frequently." Sacramento County Environmental Management Department. Fix this issue and I will remove the negative review.

Lindsey J.

Yelp
Clean, friendly and delicious. A bit crowded but that's how you know it's tasty ice cream. Solid old school creamery. I had a double scoop in a cone and my man had a chocolate milk shake. Reasonable prices. Would recommend:)

Fran P.

Yelp
One of my favorite childhood memories is my mom taking us to Vic's for an ice cream cone. I've taken my kids here and one of my grandsons too. This Mother's Day I just want to say Thanks. You'll always have a place in our family's heart

Julie P.

Yelp
Another awesome ice cream place shown to me my a friend who isn't all that in to sweets.. yet she's introduced me to gunthers and now Vic's! Needed something cold to eat after gobbling down a bowl of hot pho on a warm summer day... so we went to Vic's. I ordered a Sunday with toasted almond ice cream and marshmallow as the topping. It came with whip cream and nuts. The nuts weren't just mass produced ground up peanuts , I believe they were chopped whole almonds. BOMB! Can't wait to go back :)

Annie B.

Yelp
Looove this place best ice cream in Sacramento . The staff is great nice and very helpful. This place has been open for more than 50 years. There is plenty of off street parking so you can enjoy your guiltily pleasures. The ice cream is so yummy & good makes you want to keep coming back to enjoy the wonderful treats there is also a menu with various other items. Will definitely return very soon #yepelite #foodie
