10 Places Where It Seems Like Vampires Are More Than Myth

"Ned Kelly and his gang are still folk heroes to many Australians, but few know that four Victoria policemen were sent into the bush to track down Kelly and his brother Dan in 1878, and only one of them returned. The policemen—all of them Irish immigrants, who made up a majority of the force in the early days—are the subject of a large exhibit at the Victoria Police Museum. As a foreign visitor especially, it’s revealing to learn about the modern crimes that shook the state of Victoria, including the Russell Street car bombing in 1986, and the Hoddle Street massacre the following year.  A gun and a set of the instantly recognizable metal body armor used by Kelly’s gang is here among the expected artifacts like uniforms, badges, weapons, and a vintage police motorcycle, as well as a look at notable acts by past officers and the rise of women in the force. There are also some unusual finds, like a 19th century vampire slaying kit that was confiscated in a drugs raid in 2004, and the death mask of Frederick Deeming, a notable killer who murdered his wife and four children in his native England, and another wife in Melbourne. Hanged at Melbourne Gaol in 1892, for a long time he was considered to be a candidate for Jack the Ripper, the serial killer who haunted London in 1888. Back on the streets of Melbourne, large, square concrete bollards are the latest weapon in the fight against terrorism, though locals responded by decorating them with art work, posters, graffiti and designed coverings. Update as of January 2020: The museum is moving to 313 Spencer Street and will be closed until it re-opens again in early 2021." - ATLAS_OBSCURA

Brilliant! Sadly, quite a small museum but they have packed a lot in. A must for anyone interested in police/police history. Free to visit and a nice little shop at the front of the museum. Lots of things to look at and facts to read. Multiple interactive ‘games’ to play as well.

Showcasing Victoria Police since inception, this small museum is both historical and insightful. Covering all sectors of The Force from the days of police horses, the canine unit, forensics, Ned Kelly (largest display of Kelly memorabilia) and much more it’s well worth a visit. Congratulations to the team who curated this with attention to detail as well as respect for officers who have died in the line of duty. Plenty for kids to do that’s fun and engaging. The whole museum would take around 40 minutes if you read all the displays and played along with some of the activities such as making a photo id from a quick viewing of a person’s face or examining your hand under a high powered microscope. Found the audio / video of the historical events of the Russell St bombing and Walsh Street murders triggering as I remember where I was when each of those events occurred and the emotions it brings up after the fact. Tragic. Staff are lovely and very helpful. Notes: Wheelchair accessible, no food available, tram right out the front, only a few hundred metres from Southern Cross station in the Melbourne West police complex, free entry. #tripadvisor #tripadvisorreview #tripadvisorreviewer #googlelocalguide #googlelocalguides #letsguide #thewanderingreviewer #victoriapolicemuseum @victoriapolicemuseum

Small but well curated museum showcasing the history of Victoria's police force. You'll need about 20 minutes to walk through - longer if you engage with the interactive installations. Great for both kids and adults. Wheelchair accessible and all on one level floor. Staff very approachable :) Located within the Melbourne West police complex - very close to Southern Cross train station , trams along both Spencer st and Latrobe Street (including the number 35 tourist tram). Free entry.

Curated professionally and well thought through with highlighting significant moments in police and Victorian history. I was impressed and surprised we didn't have to pay a set admission fare too (donations based). It's not an overally huge exhibition but there is still plenty to see and organised into different sections. Easy to understand. It's very unassuming from the outside. Staff were very friendly and approachable too. There's also some merch if you want a police dog plushy!

Great place, the museum is a bit small but still has great things able to collect a lot of information. Love the idea of interactive displays and everything. I was like a kid playing with everything. 😄 Love the idea of the Kelly Gang display I was incredible amazed. I got some souvenirs, the plush are really cute. The customer service was very friendly and lovely.

I know this isn't really the place to put this review but I had to say something about the sergeant at South Melbourne police station on 31/08/25 at around 4:30pm. I was transferred to him after calling 000 in the middle of a road rage incident. He was calming, friendly and empathic whilst maintaining professionalism. We need more cops like him. Faith in humanity restored. Thank you for caring when it is far easier to not care. I really hope he sees this!
