I came into Victor's, a small town Minnesotan (turned Californian), on a day off because I wanted to find a small town diner in New Iberia that could (hopefully) make me some decent grits.
Mind you- I've had grits many times, mostly at the "fancy" restaurants in Minneapolis/St.Paul when I lived there but I've never been very impressed. I figured what better place to give it another shot than in Louisiana. I'm glad I did.
Victor's is a no-frills, cafeteria style diner with some fantastic employees. I walked in and was a bit confused as to whether I should sit down and wait to be served or go hop in line. One of the friendly employees there helped me out and pointed me to the line :)
I went through the line and ordered a simple breakfast dish- eggs, sausage, and grits.
I sat down and was quickly served my dish, and wow: the grits blew me away. I realized part of the problem with the other restaurants I'd been at- they tried doing too much with the grits, whether it be adding odd seasonings/sauces, cooking them in non-traditional ways, etc. Victor's cooked them perfectly, and the seasoning was simple but perfect. I told the lady bussing the dishes that it was the best grits I'd had and we chatted about different ways to have them that are good.
The bottom line: if you want a good home-cooked meal in a diner-type restaurant, look no further than Victor's Cafeteria.
Next time I'm back in New Iberia you can bet I'll be stopping in.
