We were here several years ago. With a daylong layover in San Juan, we walked from the Tres Palmas Inn, where we were staying, to Castillo de El Morro. On the way, we heard music and the voices of people in the square of what I learned was the art museum. We entered the passageway to the square. Immediately, I caught a whiff of something wonderful cooking. I followed the smell and asked if they sold anything gluten-free. "Everything is gluten-free," I was told. Then, the woman behind the counter started filling up complimentary plates of the most delicious organic food I could imagine. I was already stuffed with the samples when I finally gave my order...and was filled up again!
We sat in the square for a long time and had a long chat with a couple who had been born in San Juan, moved to Chicago, where they worked and raised their family, then moved back to San Juan after they retired.
The Old Farmer's Market is just one of the reasons I fell in love with San Juan and why, in the wake of Hurricane Maria, which happened after we were in the city, I pray daily for the people of Puerto Rico, write to members of Congress on their behalf, and have contributed to relief efforts.
The people of San Juan were wonderful to us. I hope someday to return to the city...and to the Old San Juan Farmer's Market. The food, ambiance, and hospitality were all fantastic!
