Vieques, Puerto Rico, Travel Guide

"Martiza's Car Rental and Vieques Car Rental are among the island's reliable car rental companies. Locals recommend booking a rental car far in advance of your stay, even as soon as you book your accommodations. This is especially true if you're traveling during high season, as it's not uncommon for car rental companies to be entirely sold out during the busiest months in Vieques." - Travel + Leisure Editors

Before booking, I hadn’t seen the reviews; I made the reservation because they had availability. Once we arrived to pick up the vehicle, we quickly realized that much of what others had mentioned in their reviews was very true. The staff’s attitude wasn’t the most professional or friendly, and the environment felt unwelcoming. Dawn, who I believe is the owner, came across as particularly dismissive, which added to the discomfort. The rental process was complicated, filled with numerous conditions and unexpected requirements. They begin releasing vehicles starting at 1PM, regardless of what time you arrive, and the car must be returned by 12PM the following day, meaning you don’t actually get a full 24-hour rental, as is standard with most rental companies. If you need the vehicle beyond noon, they charge an additional $30 to keep it until 2PM and after that, they charge for an entire extra day. On top of that, we were given a DIRTY vehicle, yet were told it needed to be returned “clean”, which felt unreasonable. Despite all of this, the car itself worked perfectly and served us well throughout our stay. That said, the company would greatly benefit from improving its customer service to offer a more positive overall experience. Before booking with them, I highly recommend checking the reviews of other local rental agencies. Several were recommended to us after our experience, and it was clear that others received much better service than we did.

We rented a jeep for two days to tour the island and go to various beaches. The shuttle to the ferry when we returned our vehicle was great. We got lucky and were able to do a day of rental but would recommend reserving in advance.

Stay very clear of this rental. If they promise to pick you up, they wont and think it’s ok, with attitude. Everyone in picture were told they would be picked up and all took taxis after waiting 45+ minutes. Our rental car was the very back and we had to wait until all other renters taking similar cars moved on. Total cluster. Update: drop off a very different experience with different staff member. Checked us in and shuttled to the dock. It was like a totally different company.

Google
Solid rental company for a beautiful island. We rented a Ford Bronco S with them which was nice to have for some of the rougher roads to get to the beaches. They offer complimentary pickup and drop off to/from the ferry which made getting on and off the island very easy. Be aware that their hours are 9am-5pm so it is worthwhile to try to get on the island before 4pm and drop off the car before noon and coordinate ferry times around that.

Our Jeep Wrangler rental itself went relatively smoothly, but the customer service at pickup and return was disappointing. Upon arrival, we followed the instructions to call for an airport pickup, but no one answered or returned our call for 15 minutes. We only, eventually got a ride because the shuttle happened to come for an unrelated drop-off. On the first day, we discovered the key fob did not lock/unlock the doors. I left a voicemail to report it but never received a response. On the final day, we got a low tire pressure alert shortly after starting our drive. Since we were close to the rental office, we went straight there and found an employee inside. Despite explaining that our tire near-flat, we were told, “We open at 9am,” and were ignored for over an hour. By 9:15, the tire was completely flat. Only when we specifically asked if they had an air pump did they offer assistance, after they told us we were then required to take the car to a local tire shop and pay for the repair ourselves anyway. Upon returning the vehicle, we were charged an additional $25 for the damage, which was not stated in our contract nor when instructed to go elsewhere to get the tire fixed.

Meh The older woman who seemed to be in charge had a negative attitude. The young woman working the counter was very personable. Very inflexible hours and scheduling. Unstable steering in the golf cart. April 2023, strict Covid mask requirements. Not so strict when it came to customer safety, shuttle ride back to the ferry, mask required in the van, fine - Driver talking on the cell phone on the crazy narrow winding island streets, holding the phone, not hands free, no bueno. Next time, I will seek a more customer friendly experience. My personal safety should have been a priority.

Google
Not a great experience with this rental place. The golf cart we got seat belts were not safe, the golf cart literally sounded like a tractor- and the workers were super rude. They will drive your whole party to the rental place but tell you to leave your whole party somewhere else at drop off “due to room restrictions” I just feel like there can be a better resolution than leaving people at a random place on a random island. It took my friend like an hour to “drop off”. They are super strict on time to return but take their own time actually returning the vehicle. Contradicts their own policy!

Google
absolutely the worst car rental experience. But they really don't care, because there's not a lot of options on the island. So here's what to know: -you need to return the car by noon. MAYBE you can have it for 2 hours longer if you pay $30 extra, but you don't know until that morning. No exceptions. -they don't open until 9am. Even though the ferry leaves at 9:30. They won't open early. No exceptions. -they will take a really long time to pick you up, even though everything is about 5 minutes away on the island. Just make yourself comfy and wait, because there's no other options. -the Bronco is not 4 wheel drive, so go with the jeep. I mean, at least you have a car, right? Pluses: the car drives. I think that might be the only plus.

Yelp
Accept that you're on an island and read your rental agreement, especially as it has to do with time! Given the amount of options and the specificity and clarity of the information provided, service and quality is good. They are only open from 09:00 to 17:30, and your pick up has to be in person. If you arrive at 09:00, you'll have to wait for them to handle all of their car returns (30+ minutes depending on how busy they are) before they handle your drop off. They can make arrangements for after hours drop off, and you will pay a reasonable fee for that. If you're leaving on a ferry, drop any companions at the ferry terminal before returning the car. You'll need to share the shuttle with others, and it can get tight. In addition, if you're leaving on the 10:00 AM ferry, get there on time and don't stress everyone out! They know what they're doing, and they'll get you to the boat before it leaves. They have a good selection of new, well-maintained vehicles, and just a few, reasonable limitations on where you can take them. Staff is no nonsense and communicates well, but don't expect them to accommodate requests that don't make sense for their operation, and don't expect obsequious service. They are good at what they do, and they don't apologize for how they run their business.

Since we were close to the rental office, we went straight there and found an employee inside. Despite explaining that our tire was rapidly losing air, we were told, "We open at 9am," and were ignored for over an hour. By 9:15, the tire was completely flat. Only when we specifically asked if they had an air pump did they offer assistance. We were then required to take the car to a local tire shop and pay for the repair ourselves. Yelp
A vehicle is very necessary on this island, so we decided to rent a golf cart. We made a reservation, and it all went smoothly and had no issues. Thanks again!!

Dez N.

Yelp
Got in early and was able to pick up my vehicle. The lady behind the counter was helpful even though I was a pain in the butt from lack of sleep and poor timing on my part. Again, changed the drop off time because of scheduling and had to wait about 15 minutes for someone to come and pick up the keys. When considering the small staff and embracing the idea of "island time", their service was pretty awesome.

Ryan W.

Yelp
Nothing bad to say about my rental for two days in Vieques. All the ladies were respectful and efficient in getting us checked in and checked out. The golf cart performed as expected and was a great way to travel around the island. They have competitive prices and provided shuttle to and from the ferry. Very thankful for them making our trip to Vieques enjoyable.

Yelp
I'm not sure why some people have bad experiences with this group, but guessing it's because the customers forget it's a business. We had a really good experience all the way through with these folks, but then we've traveled in a variety of off-the-beaten-path locations. There was good email communication ahead of arriving, a little confusion on pickup at the airport that was solved with a quick phone call. A hilarious (free) shuttle ride from the airport to the rental location, 5 employees and the two of us as riders. The staff was very clear on their expectations for caring for the golf cart we rented, returning with fuel, damage, etc. They did try to upsale us on a higher grade vehicle, returning it at a later time, etc., but why wouldn't they? So we had no problems during the three days we rented. We stopped in the office during our stay just to check in and confirm our return time and shuttle drop off point. Super, super friendly folks all around. I have to expect the bad reviews are from people expecting the world to revolve around their "vacation". Buga's Mexican restaurant isn't a bad place to kill a couple of hours while waiting on the ferry, as we did, after the shuttle dropped us off. Anyway, enjoyed our time and will return and rent from VCR again.

Yelp
Our contract stated that we would be picked up from the ferry. When we arrived we were told that only the drivers would be taken to the car rental spot. We rented two golf carts for 6 people. So while our two drivers went to the rental office the other four travelers waited on the side of the road, in the heat for their return. This should be mentioned in their contract!

Yelp
We had a great experience with Vieques Car Rental, and everyone we worked with was above and beyond helpful and friendly. The Jeep we rented was great, and rounded out to be about $90/day during the high season. It's too much, I realize that, but that's what all of them around the island go for and so you just roll with it. It's so worth it to have a Jeep on this island to get out and explore, and navigate some of the back roads. We were actually thrilled to make the online reservation here because the property manager tried to rent us one from another company and they didn't have enough for us during high season. They did tell us not to drive on certain roads, like the "road" that connects from Media Luna to Navio. We totally respected that and walked the short walk to that beach because that road is a stuck-in-the-mud flat tire waiting to happen. They picked us up from the airport and were nice and conversational, quick to go through the rental process, and then gave us a ride to where we needed upon returning. Honestly I wish the big rental companies in the US were this efficient. All in all solid and would rent from them again if coming back on the island.

Yelp
Worst car rental place go anywhere but HERE. We checked in and we got there right when it opened and they wanted to charge us an early fee for no reason. It took them two hours to give us two golf carts. When we returned our carts they wanted to charge us a fee for not filling up the gas tank even though they were both full tanks. They SCAM like crazy. DONT EVER COME HERE OR BOOK HERE.
google avatar

Var K.

Yelp
Stay away from this place. The person running it was incredibly rude during the check-in process. And when we returned the car, return was at 12pm, we drove in at 12:02 exactly and she charged us a late fee for that. No other car rental business on the planet would do shit like that. Manipulative and rude. She doesn't understand the meaning of customer service.

Yelp
Joseph, the manager, seemed nice enough in the beginning. When my travels were interrupted, he agreed to take off the rental charge for one day. He was going to pick us up from the airport, but we were delayed once again and would not make it prior to closing. So long story short, my sister was able to pick the car up right before closing, thus the "inspection" was performed in the dark and presumably rushed. Betty, who checked the car out to us, called out that there was "a big dent, surface damage" to the passenger side of the car as she ran her finger over it. The house manager for our vacation rental was a witness; However, Betty had only marked "surface scratches" on the rental agreement. Upon returning the car, Joseph saw this old dent, looked at the rental agreement and only saw "surface scratches" and proceeded to tell us that we were responsible. Longer story shorter (LOL), as Joseph and my sister were going back and forth re: this issue, he kept waving his middle finger in my face. When I calmly asked him if he could stop pointing his finger, his reply, was "I'll point my finger at whoever I want ". Really?! Are we in high school right now? Is this a place of business? Is this what you call customer service?! My sister told him again to stop (granted less calmly this time), then Joseph then spewed out an expletive!! This is no way to treat a customer. This is no way to behave as a business. And honestly, this is no way to behave as an unprovoked human. We started off very congenial, but Joseph was curt from the start. He even threatened to call the police. After inspecting the car again myself...it's obviously an old dent. That's when I told Joseph This car had clearly been in a number of incidences to have acquired so many "surface scratches", including the quarter sized dent we were accused of causing. The aforementioned dent was clearly old and most likely caused at the time as the 7-foot long scratch that was already there.
google avatar

Brenda L.

Yelp
The whole process is a sham. They rush you through the walk thru inspection and specifically state "inspect the outside of the car" so that's what my mother did. Little did we know that the damage was inside! Literally not even 10 minutes into it we noticed. We messed up by not leaving the car right there and then. Mind you, we had video proof of the damage, time stamped and dated and they had the nerve to say they DIDN'T give the car like that. A FUCKING JOKE!!!! Please save yourself the headache and go elsewhere. I didn't read the reviews, had I done so I would have listened. We clearly all had the exact same experience and they have the nerve to reply to people's comments the way they do. HAHAHA!!! A FUCKING JOKE! Go somewhere else.

Yelp
Inflexible, but easy to communicate. The people were nice, but don't plan on doing anything with them after 5 or before 9. No accomodation for the altered ferry schedule (weather). So, they say 5:30 PM close, but I called at 5:15 from the ferry dock, trying for a taxi, and they said come the next day. So I paid an extra full day for 2 hours. True, it's in the contract, doesn't make me like it any better. On the plus side, the carts were well maintained, ran flawlessly.

V B.

Yelp
We did not have the type of experience so many other reviewers are describing. We picked up a great jeep at 1pm right when it was first available. Took less than 10 minutes for paperwork. Everything was clearly explained. Staff very friendly. Returned fully gassed jeep several days later right before noon, which is when it was due. We had NO issues. I would use this company again.

Yelp
We don't give it a 0 because we can't. This was the worst experience we have had in years of renting cars. Where to start - We made the reservation online requesting to pick up the car at 10 am; a few hours later we got an email from the owner letting us know that the car was not going to be ready until 1pm. I am not sure why their website would allow us to book it at any time when it was not available. As soon as the lady picked us up at the hotel, we knew this was not going to be a good experience. She was not friendly at all and was driving quite fast. When we arrived to their office, we talked about returning it at the same time that we picked it up (1pm). She informed, us very rudely that we had to return the car by noon. If we wanted to have it beyond that - we'd be charged an extra day. The treatment was terrible; no service, kindness or even empathy. We decided to call another company and rent from them knowing that Vieques car rental would still charge us for one full day for "canceling" on them - which we NEVER would have done if we didn't feel so disrespected by them. Plain and simple, they don't deserve your business. It's still a free country - go elsewhere. Unfortunately for us we didn't read all these reviews. Check other reviews too.

Yelp
When we arrived last Friday, one of the ladies was super rude to my wife and not very nice. She thought she was the boss. These people are the rudest people on the island. We will never rent from this company and I will recommend all my clients not use their cars or golf carts . We truly feel that they treat white people better than Latinos. My wife and I are a Mixed couple with our with teenagers and we feel they were racists and they talked with the worst tone. The issue that the bossy lady was complaining that we didn't put gas in their golf cart and their gas meters were broken and we did fill up their tanks up. They never explained where tank line was. They said that they were going to charge us $50 a tank. We were going back and forth arguing about the gas gauge were broken and were going to pay $100. And they also said that they were not going to send us back on the shuttle and we would have to pay for a taxi and threatening us charging for extra charges. I We loved coming to the island and the beaches but those 2 ladies must make a killing just price gauging on bullying people about the gas not filled up, the cart got wet, or stupid flat tire stipulations. We want to report them to BBB if there's one Puerto Rico and they need to audit their book of service. These women must do this everyday to customers every time they get a chance. These women don't even treat Puerto Rican's correctly and also treat them like crap. If I were you go spend your money elsewhere.

Sria V.

Yelp
If there is an opportunity to give them a zero star I would. If you do not want to get scammed by this company then stay away. Spend your money elsewhere. My family arrived to Vieques on 7/23/2021 excited to start our adventure. We were told that pick up for the golf carts started at 1:00 p.m. We arrived on an early ferry and decided to check In early to Vieques car Rental. I was told that if I wanted the car before 1:00 I would have to pay an extra day rental of $70.00. A whole day rental fee instead of 1/2 day rental since it was only from 9:00-1:00. Not sure why they charge one day rental fee. I had reserved two cars and got the second car at 10:00 am and it was three hours early and paid an additional $70.00. I paid it because we wanted to get our day started didn't agree with the costs but there is nothing you can say to the person who does the check in process because you can't get a word in. When I arrived I was not greeted didn't get a name from the woman who checked me in. What I do know is that my morning was tainted by this rude woman. It was such an ordeal to check in and get my golf carts. We waited over an hour to check in. My daughter had to use the restroom and was told that their bathroom was out of order. Not sure how you can run a business with no bathroom. My daughter was also treated rudely when she asked for the bathroom. Returning was a nightmare. Gas gauge does not work so you can't tell if your tank is full or not. We put gas in both carts but apparently we did not fill it to lines in the gas tanks. I was reprimanded for not filling the tank. My husband chimed in and told them about the broken gauge, and then the argument started saying that we did not follow instructions. We either fill it up or pay $50.00 for not bringing it back with gas. Really you got to be kidding me. Plus I paid $640 for two golf carts and I have a 1,000.00 hold on my card for incidentals. The two women tagged team and started yelling at my husband saying that we fill the tank or pay the $50.00 for the gas. I was instructed where the gas goes but never told where the lines represent if it is full or not. This women said my husband was rude and because of that they were not going to take us back to the ferry and that we had to find our own transportation. STAY AWAY FROM THIS PLACE! Besides this headache, we loved Vieques and enjoyed our time this island.

Yelp
Left a bad taste in my mouth. This was my second time visiting vieques, and we used Maritsas before, but I read good reviews about VIeques Car Rental, so I thought I'd give them a try. The jeep my wife and I rented was great, exactly what you'd expect, 4wd to get you down all the rough roads on the island, and there are a lot of rough roads but they take you to some of the most amazing beaches in the world! So the jeep was great, until it wouldn't start the last day. Tried to jump it, no dice, it happens, inconvenient but not a huge deal. Called the office, they sent a mechanic to check it and pick us up. He was a total jerk. Not sure what his mood was about but we just tried to be polite. We were getting set to return the jeep when it wouldn't start, and we needed to get to the airport, he came and picked us up and acted really put out by the whole ordeal, and lectured me. He took us back to the office, the women working there were helpful and apologetic for our inconvenience, which wouldn't have been a big deal to us except that the mechanic was a dick. As we were wrapping up the paper work, the mechanic came back in, I thought he was going to apologize for being grumpy, but instead he yelled at my wife! We were polite during this entire transaction until this incident. He walked away, the women behind the counter looked surprised and apologized. He's lucky he walked away because I was ready to smack the hell out of him. Disappointing to say the least, 5 star experience up until the last hour we had the jeep. If a jeep dies it's annoying but it happens, not a huge deal. But for an employee to yell at a customer (after spending over $500) for no reason, in front of other employees is just unacceptable. It's worth mentioning though that I interacted with 3 different women who were all friendly, helpful, and communicative. But I'll think twice about spending my money there again if I have to deal with that guy.

Carrie K.

Yelp
We rented a jeep from Vieques Car Rental for Christmas week 2021. Customer service was excellent and the jeeps worked out beautifully. The island is gorgeous and it is well worth it to rent a vehicle to get around and see all the sites. Thanks for providing us with a safe and reliable transportation during our stay.

Yelp
I'll say the same things that all other renters are saying. I've ben to Vieques several times but never rented from here. I was late to rent this time and they were the only place I could find with availability. Now I know why. It's a scam and a nightmare. I got a bad vibe. They have a lot of "rules" that are basically a way to nickel and dime you. It seems like their MO, based on the other reviews. They will find a way to add something to your bill upon returning the car. I got charged and "extra cleaning fee" for too much sand in the car. It was honestly just a way to grab $35 from me. I wish I had a picture of the backseat. We talking about a little sand on the seats, which, as I explained to the woman is to be expected when you are renting Jeeps in Vieques. The amount of "extra fees" they make you agree to is insane. A fee for putting your feet on the dash. A late fee, a fee for taking the top off, you name it. Do yourself a favor and rent from anywhere else. Plus, they are plain rude and treat like they're doing you a favor. Now, I'll just wait for the owner to leave me a rude response to this review.

Sammy L.

Yelp
Would give zero stars if possible. Abrasive service at check in, and now they are charging for damage (so minute that any other car rental would consider it normal wear and tear), that we did not do. Shameless money grab? Idk, take a look at the photo and me it needs the entirely new bumper they are charging me for.

Josephine H.

Yelp
The worst experience of my time in Vieques island was dealing with Vieques Car Rental. They were Rude and not accommodating At all. My buggy had to be towed away and they behaved as if I were inconveniencing them with their Buggy Not Working.. Anyone is on the island is better than this shit hole
google avatar

Fatima T.

Yelp
So the car was fine, but whew the service! When we returned the car, it admittedly smelled like gasoline because the place we filled it at didnt have a safety stop. We explained it to the person who was checking us out and giving us a ride to the ferry. She wouldnt let us open the window during the ride. She treated us like children being punished. She locked the window and literally wouldn't let us open it. I was light-headed and sick. Total "no-wire hangers" psycho white lady. Go somewhere else. There are other options. Don't get trapped and fumigated like me.
google avatar

Jody B.

Yelp
Scam. Don't rent here. As others have said they will bait and switch your car. Verbally commit to a Jeep and then send you a confirmation for a golf cart. My fault for not reading the very fine print but the scam is for those that unfortunately missed the confirmation in time to actually book the car they wanted they will tell you to cancel and then charge you anyways. Not worth the rude people nasty cars and crappy service. Book elsewhere.

Yelp
Definitely rent a vehicle if you are staying on Vieques. We rented a golf cart from Vieques Car rental and were very happy with every aspect provided by the service. Also the location was perfect for us since we stayed in Isabel. We were able to walk here before and after pickup which was super convenient bc the taxi system can be a little inconsistent. Check out was easy and clear. We hope to return to Vieques and plan to use this company again. Pro Tip: book a car way in advance during the busy season and read the policy agreement in detail before you commit. A golf cart worked for us (two people ) but a family of 3 or more should rent a car.

Andrew M.

Yelp
yo this place is straight ass. there service is terrible. do not support this business. when I arrived I previously got off a long ferry from San Juan and quite tired. I got off earlier ferry. I shitted in my pants and they did not let me use the restroom when an employee went to restroom right in front of me. on top of that they tried to swindle me into paying a bunch a fees. lastly they gave me a shitty golf cart that was balls and didn't go over 15 miles per hour. don't support I repeat do not support

Yelp
The previous bad reviews here made us a little nervous about renting here, but in the end, our experience was thoroughly great. Unless you're staying at the W (and even then, I would want to escape the confines of its walls), you're going to need a car here and a sporty, rough-and-tumble Jeep comes in handy for navigating the sometimes dicey roads of Vieques. We saw it as a fun adventure: who hasn't dreamed of Jeepin' around at the beach? Unfortunately, this comes with a $90/day price tag but that's true of every car rental we checked with on the island, so you kind of have to swallow it and embrace the upsides of your Jeep rental (take the roof off and go to the beach!). It helped too that even after a week of fully exploring Vieques, our gas total was only about $20. Online reservation was easy and painless, and within minutes of us calling after landing on the island, someone was there to pick us up in our Jeep. Everyone we dealt with was very friendly and helpful and most of all, efficient - which if you've rented from a standard rental company in other places, you know that's not the usual experience. On our way out, we had an early morning flight and decided to return our Jeep the day before we left, and spend that last evening grilling out and hanging out in our rental cottage. The staff here happily gave us a ride home, and again, were quick and efficient checking us out. There are only a few car rental options here on Vieques, but if you're scanning this page and wondering whether or not to go with Vieques Car Rental, my recommendation is a resounding yes.

Yelp
Under no circumstance could I imagine recommending this company. Zero customer service. Our car had problems from the outset. A warning light was on from day one. We mentioned it and he said it is no problem. The third day we learned that the light meant low tire pressure when our tire was almost flat so we went back. He said he knew the car had this problem. I asked why he rented us a car with a problem. He said it was suzukis problem not his. I said that since he owned it and rented it to me it was his problem and by renting it he made it my problem. He just said no. Then stared at me like I was the fool. Uh, no--well, maybe, since I used this company If there were a car available on the island, I would rent it now and dump this car and the company. Maybe I was the fool for not listening to the complaints on trip advisor. Do NOT use them. Go to maritza's. Upon return, he only charged me the pump price for gas to make up for it. He tried. It didn't make up for having to put air in the tire every day.

***WARNING*** BEWARE OF JOEY THE MANAGER'S IRRATIONAL TEMPER*** !!!!!!LOOK OVER THE INSPECTION BEFORE LEAVING THE LOT AND TAKE PICTURES!!!!! Initially, Joey the manager, seemed very helpful. He dropped the charge for a day that I missed due to travel issues. Although, I think he had to do that anyway... All was good with pick up. I had my sister who was already on the island to pick up the car before they closed at 18:30, since my flight was delayed. They arrived right before closing, so the inspection was done in the dark and was somewhat rushed. During that inspection, Betty (who was very helpful and courteous) ran a finger over a quarter-sized dent in the passenger side and said "big dent, surface damage". Val, the house manager for the beach home I had rented was witness to this. However, Betty did not mark it as such on the contract. It was only marked "surface scratches". There were old scratches all over the car, including a sizeable one that ran the length of the passenger side. Both the scratch and the large dent were obviously old. Here's where it gets whacky. When we returned the car, Joey was there. He was not very courteous, but more curt instead. He said he needed to inspect the car. He then went on to say that the dent in the passendger side was a new occurrence, and that he didn't remember that being there from the last rental. It was also not marked on the contract, and he "had to go by what's on the contract". Hmmm. Ok. I kept my cool, and my sister tried to explain to him that he needed to call Betty to confirm that the dent was indeed present prior to us taking the car. We had not struck anything, and nothing had struck us. Vieques is a small island, and although parking is pretty liberal, the locations where we parked could not have allowed such damage to the car. Joey's answer was that someone could have hit us while we were parked. OK..so you're telling me that after you charge me for the damage, that you are going to get that old dent fixed? I think not. If the scratched wereren't dealt with, I highly doubt this old dent would be fixed. During this conversation with Joey, he was waving his middle finger precariously close to my face. I then calmly asked him to stop to which he replied, "I can point my finger at whoever I want". Really?? At this point, my sister got a little heated and said something about the pointing...I honeslty can't remember exactly what was said. I do remember Joey pointing his middle finger at her and thus began the yelling match between Joey and my sister. Joey threatens to call the police. I try and quell the argument, and go out and re-inspect the passenger side. I am again CONVINCED that this is OLD DAMAGE, and tell Joey to go ahead and call the police. Long story shortened, my sister takes me and my friend to the airport so that we wouldn't miss our flight. Upon her return to the rental place, she sees Joey leaving. No police. Betty shows up and apologizes for the craziness and does not charge us for the old damage. Per Betty, Joey called the owner instead of the police. The owner asked me to email him. I will basically copy and paste my review in an email to him. This is by far one of the worst and most unprofessional experiences I have EVER HAD.

Yelp
Rented on a busy holiday weekend- at first I was a little disappointed that there were no automobiles left and we had to reserve a golf cart but I think, after a few days of seeing the island at a slower speed, that when we return I'll ask for a cart again. You really notice and truly see everything, and vieques is small enough that you're not really taking much longer to get anywhere. We travelled through the hills, along both coasts and in the towns and loved it. Staff at the headquarters were well organized friendly and thorough, there's a gas station a quarter mile East on 200 to top up and the whole process was a delight. Free fast shuttle to the ferry terminal was a huge plus.

Yelp
The absolute worst rental experience I've ever had. We are still on the trip, so I hope to update this with fabulous news that they handled the issues with respect and professionalism. I think the manager "Betty" is trying to resolve the issues. The employee "Jennifer" that we have worked with for 2 days has been very rude, disrespectful, and mocked us. The other employee "mechanic" that we met was being quite disrespectful in Spanish assuming that we did not understand. :( Betty was kind, understanding and had a professional sense of urgency. Having said that, the other 2 employees were again very rude- and extremely unprofessional. We understand that things happen. We are well traveled. We've been coming to this island for 20 years. It's how you handle yourself when things arise that truly define the experience. It wasn't that 2 vehicles left us unsafely stranded- it was how we were treated when those things happened. We aren't difficult people. Vieques needs people to come to island - especially after Maria. Jennifer and the mechanic that came to address repairs need to have some sort of customer service training. Just be kind- smile. Say, we are sorry this happened. Versus making us feel like we broke their property. Also, clear communication goes a very long way. The first vehicle had a fuel pump go out. We absolutely didn't cause that issue. The next day, the second vehicle had a belt pop off while driving down the road at normal speed. The police told us the belt was too small and shouldn't have been on the vehicle. Overall, I would absolutely NOT recommend renting anything from Vieques Car Rental. The reviews I found prior to booking were poor, but we used them because they were the only option on the island. Unfortunately our experience has been less than 1 star. Again, I hope to remove and/or update this by the end of our stay. We will see how it goes.

Yelp
We visited the island a couple of weeks ago. Vieques is charming definitely you need to have wheels - we had no choice but to rent a golf cart. The cart travels at 20 mph they are loud! The issue for us was the rude behavior a lady named Jennifer she was curt uncooperative and she made a "error" in the bill. Keep your eyes open when paying. Keep your deposit separate from the actual rental bill. Have a sense of humor and don't let negative people ruin your vacation. The location of our stay did not allow for the Vieques car rental service to pick us up or give us a ride when arriving / departing the island- Vieques car rental have wacky hours for returns and pick ups. good luck- keep eyes open with the bill!

Yelp
When I called to rent, I asked if a golf cart would do on the island, and was told that it would be fine. Well, a golf cart on this island IS NOT fine. After the first day of almost getting hit a couple times, we called and asked to trade it for a car, which they did. We were very happy with that, so far so good. Everything was fine, until our last day. When we picked up the car, we asked what the return policy is, and was told that it cost $10 and hour extra after noon. As our flight is at four we informed them that we would return the car at 2 pm., and that the extra charge was not a problem. At noon, we received a call that we MUST return the car immediately. We informed the caller that we were on the other side of the island, she told us that we had 10 minutes to get there, rather rudely, I might add. So we had to finish our walk quickly and rush back. When I got there, a person named Dawn came over and told me to hurry up and get my stuff out of the car, so they could clean it. At that point, I was frustrated, and snapped at her, and yes used a bad word. She came back with" you better shut up, or you can find your own f*#%*+~ ride to the Airport." So now I sit here in the airport, 3 hours before my flight, I see it as unnecessary and inconvenient. I just went back and read your reviews for this company, and I see that a person named John answers the bad ones, JOHN, why do you not DO something to improve your company, instead of continuously apologizing for it. You could start by getting rid of Dawn. She is a detriment to your company, there is no reason to ever be rude, she was rude when she called and rude when we got there.

Yelp
The service at Vieques Car Rental went way beyond my expectations. Everyone I interacted with there was conscientious and kind. I had reserved a Jeep Wrangler and was very surprised to find myself driving a brand new 2015 model with only about 500 miles on it. I kinda felt bad taking it off road where thorns and small branches brushed against it, it was sooo nice. But I guess they understand that this is what will be done with a vehicle like this on Vieques, and they definitely didn't charge me for any surface scratches. Usually they require their cars to be turned in by noon, but they offered to adjust my return time to 2:00pm, no charge, when I told them that my flight was at 3:30pm. I'll also mention that while I was in Vieques there was an island-wide gas shortage, because of all the tourists that come and rent cars during the winter holidays (I was there Jan. 1 - Jan 5). Apparently it's not usually this bad, but there was no gas available for the four days I was there. That said, in four days I only used an eighth of a tank of gas and Vieques Car Rental only charged me the pump price for gasoline I had used when I turned it in without filling it up (the gas stations were technically open when I turned the car in, but there were lines with like forty cars in them!). Most of all I was just very impressed with the customer service, and when I return to Vieques I will plan on renting with this company again. It was the best experience I have ever had with a car rental.

Yelp
We rented a golf cart and had a wonderful experience from start to finish. Vieques Car Rental picked us up from the airport, quickly checked us in at their rental property down the road, showed us how to use the cart and sent us on our way with a map and a can of fix-a-flat. We explored all over the island and just LOVED the open-air feel of the golf cart (plus it was a breeze to park just about anywhere). There's no speedometer but it felt like we could do a top speed of 25? We had only idyllic days until the day before we left, when our tire went flat. The fix-a-flat worked, but since it was nighttime we left it until the following morning, when the tire was flat again. Vieques Car Rental came to us within 15 minutes with a new golf cart! What could have been a stressful event was instead one of surprised gratitude. We dealt with 3 or 4 different employees and every single one of them reminded us why we love Vieques so much. FYI -- I'm glad we didn't rent a Jeep. We didn't need to reach any off-roading areas and it was just the two of us. The golf cart is just super easy to drive, manage, and park. I think it was $60/day (maybe?), but worth every penny as it easily connected us to every beach we wanted to visit and then some!

Yelp
We rented a cart again for our second trip to Vieques...same great service. Pick-up from the ferry was perfect, price was as expected and staff was professional. We will book again with Vieques Car Rental

Yelp
I called to reserve a car and the person attempting the phone call was very rude, they don't rent cars for a day, minimum two days and it's very expensive I definitely don't recommend this place!!!!!!

Yelp
I reserved a Jeep over a month in advance through the website for Vieques Car Rental. We had read good reviews of Vieques Car Rental and were very excited to drive a Jeep around the island with the windows open and to explore the different beaches. It wasn't until they picked us up from the ferry that they communicated they didn't have anymore working Jeeps. Pretty bummer since we had been set on a Jeep. Customer service sucked as the woman was impolite, offered to cancel our reservation (not helpful), or give us the vehicle she picked us up in instead.

Yelp
We rented a 4-door jeep for our 3 day adventure in Vieques. It was super easy to reserve/pay online, and the owner communicated with us over email to answer our questions. Pickup at the airport was included in the cost, and we only waited about 10 minutes for the driver once we landed and notified them of our arrival. The driver was very friendly and informative. When we checked in at the office, she gave us a map and showed us where we can/cannot go and gave us recommendations of things to do on the island and beaches to visit. The jeep was definitely necessary on the island, as it is unsafe to rent a moped or bike with the crazy drivers and horses everywhere. There's also a lot of brush and mud to navigate. We were really thankful we had the jeep. Returning the jeep was easy, and checked out with no damages. We arrived a bit early, and she brought us back to the airport at 9am for our 10am flight to San Juan. Great experience, and highly recommend this company!

Yelp
We rented a golf cart for a week and it ran perfectly (and perfectly slowly as promised). The folks at Vieques Car Rental were helpful and accommodating. Recommend this place highly.

Yelp
So a few years have passed, and we've used this business multiple times since my first review. Absolutely nothing has changed since our first experience. I would recommend this business to a complete stranger knowing that they'll be fully taken care of. They always answer the phone willing to help, the car you receive will work guaranteed, and their easy-going nature makes you want to be a repeat customer. Make sure you check them out if you're ever on the island!

Yelp
This was my second time renting a car from Vieques Car Rental. First time was a golf cart in February 2018 and since we didn't have a reservation I was impressed we got anything. Second time was a Jeep in May 2018. The Jeep was fine, it was a Jeep...rough riding, scratched up, but had ac and did the trick. The only complaints I have is I had to pay $20 to leave it at the airport when we left, I wasn't expecting that. Also, Our flight got in early 7:30) and we hung around the airport thinking they didn't open til 9. We got a ride to the rental place around 8:15 and they were open after all, confusing since they couldn't pick us up? Lastly we were told we couldn't go to 2 beaches in the Jeep and I didn't realize until later that those were the 2 beaches I had gone to previously in the golf cart and got seashells and were nicer than the others. I would have rather rented a golf cart, but they won't let you leave them at the airport. It's a decent place to rent and since there's only a handful of car rental places you're kinda at their mercy. I get the impression from the people that work there that they must have some horrible experiences, it's like they're jaded from renting the cars and having things happen, not very pleasant. Maybe I'm just used to rental car places that have more competition so they're friendlier? If you rent from them ask more questions about where you can take the rental, what extra costs you will be charged and their hours.

Yelp
Made a reservation for a golf cart for 2 days, but was told that my reservation was canceled because 1 of the carts broke down. Wasn't told it would be fixed and that I could get it the next day. So, it's possible that there was an unexpected break down; also possible that they overbooked and gave away my rental to a regular. I wouldn't say that they ruined my trip, but there are a lot more things one can do on Vieques with transportation.

Hannah O.

Yelp
Definitely explore your other car rental options before doing business with Vieques Car Rental. The check in process was fine, but the woman who helped us was so rude that it was laughable. We did the walk around and nothing was noted as being wrong with the car, and we were told "surface scratches" were acceptable. The real problem arose when we returned the car...first we were told the tank was not on full when we had topped it off literally 0.2 miles away from the rental place. Then we were told that a ONE-INCH surface scratch on the plastic bumper of the Jeep was not a "surface scratch" but a dent, and that it would cost us $250 to fix, even though we bought the extra insurance, which had a $1,000 deductible. It was a total joke. The whole ordeal completely ruined the vibe of our getaway, because we knew they were full of it. Save yourself the inevitable headache of dealing with these people and take your business elsewhere!!!

Yelp
Short version - Inflexible setup for customer - Horrible service - Expensive - Do you want to get cursed at (yes, u read it) while giving feedback about their business? Long version Since I did not understand (my bad) their rental day starts at 1 PM i had reserved my car from 10 AM, which resulted in having to pay for a full extra day and not the actual 3 hours my booking differed from their standard rental day. This solution of forcing the customer into paying full extra days if you need your car before 1 PM, just because they want the convenience of preparing customers vehicles at the same time (a guess from my end), is the first sign of how bad service this company stands for. On my reservation it stated that i had reserved the car between 10AM 28/1 until 10AM 2/2 and the amount. I think that they should have written out which times i had actually paid for (which was 1PM the 27/1 until noon 2/2) in my confirmation, because i was already on Vieques and in need of a car the 27/1 without knowing that i paid for it! When i wanted to discuss this matter with them with a gentle tone they started treating my really bad and being verbally aggressive towards me. This situation they easily could have avoided with a smile and understanding ears. Some moments later we talked about the insurance of the vehicle, what i covered and what not. I asked some questions regarding major faults and they in a very snorky way claimed that nothing like that is gonna happen to the car because "they are in perfect driving condition" For me working at a company with 130 trucks that brakes down in every possible way at some points (because they are trucks that are being used) thats just something u dont say, because u dont know. Just answer me what the insurance covers i thought! So, i stood there and got more and more irritated about their attitude and i decided that ill try and give them some feedback before i leave with the car When i tried to give them this feedback they immediately interrupted me and told me -"Well you aint done nothing but fucking talking since you got here, right?" That was just absolutely jaw-dropping. I have never been treated so bad by a company i just paid 600 dollars. They left me so upset i have decided to dedicate 10% of my long parental (didnt hesitate a second) to give them bad reviews in all ways possible, because I would not wish my worst enemy the service they stand for. Choose another rental company

Yelp
My daughter and I were going to be on Vieques for 1 day only and the golf cart looked like fun so I booked it. We arrived on time Friday, May 27th, 2016 at the airport and called for a pick up. The woman who picked us up she's the manager, I did like her upfront style, I took no issue with that, I"m like that too. Business must be conducted and I like that. I took exception to the worker Jennifer on our return. She is not customer service oriented. If you want to be all business that is fine, but don't add a snippy tone to it. I spent $82+ for a 6 hour rental of a golf cart you had better be a little more customer service oriented or more business like. Both the Manager and Jennifer were pissed off (it showed in faces and tone) that I had not fueled the cart. At both gas stations, there were young adult men hanging out and I didn't want to pull into the gas station (with my daughter) not knowing who they were plus they looked like hoodlums, I wasn't going to pull in there try to mess around with lifting the seat and unscrewing the gas cap under the seat while these people were standing around. Maybe the Manager and Jennifer know they are harmless but I live in San Diego, CA I don't know that they are. Their irritation with me and my excuse for not fueling it was so transparent and clear I told them upfront that I would pay for the cart to be fueled, it was still showing full, I should have kept my mouth shut. We were soaking wet and I asked Jennifer if there was somewhere we could change and she said that the manager was bringing up the car to take us back to the airport and essentially she wasn't going to wait for me. Her irritation with me not fueling the cart and having to wait while we changed into dry clothes really put me off. When I go back next year I'm going to try some where else simply because if I'm spending $82+ for 6 hours I'm going to read reviews and go to the place that offers the friendliest and most welcoming customer service. I have no doubt that when Jennifer and the Manager go some where to spend money they expect great customer service, I'm sure they want to feel welcomed too. However if this kind of thing does not bother you, it's a good place to rent from, the service was efficient and the equipment was perfect. I really enjoyed driving the cart around the island, my daughter was not a fan but she's a nervous person. I would take the cart around the island again in a heart beat. Thank you Vieques Car Rental you've got a good business I think Jennifer just needs to be advised that even if you are irritated with a customer it shouldn't come out in your tone.

Yelp
I'm so disappointed in this place. We rented a 6 person golf cart for Tuesday June 18-Friday June 21. When we arrived we were told that we couldn't return the car on Friday and had to return it EARLY on Thursday. Also, no one told us that there were no brakes in the golf cart. If you have ever been to Vieques, you know that the hills can be very steep. This was extremely dangerous and because of this we could only drive around the coast of the island. When we returned the cart, the woman working stated that she knew the brakes weren't working. If this isn't bad enough, my total charge was supposed to be $250. They accidentally charged my card $750 and tried to reverse it, resulting in my bank recognizing this as fraud and shutting off my card for the remainder of my vacation. My boyfriend used his card to pay for the rental after this. Well today, Wednesday, June 26th I received a notification saying that they charged my credit card for $83. When I called they claimed I had a reservation for yesterday that I never picked up. How could I have a reservation when my reservation was last week and I left Puerto Rico on Friday. The woman refused to talk to me until I continuously called and is still refusing to return my money. This is no way to run a business. I'm now claiming fraud with my card and filing a report with the BBB.

Yelp
It was the weekend of elections on the island; pandemonium was breaking out on the streets. We arrived by ferry and found ourselves at the boat dock locked in by parades of political enthusiasts celebrating their respective candidates. Trucks, mounted with massive speakers were pumping out percussive music, punctuated by joyful blast of horns, blinking lights, and the cheers of the crowd. The owner of Vieques Car Rental broke his normal protocol, and agreed to pick us up from the docks. Somehow, he managed to get us quickly through the celebrations and over to his agency, which was actually close by. The car they offered us was well-scaled to the roads of the island. Compact, maneuverable, and more than enough room for three of us with luggage. On our departure, he was kind enough to convey us to the local airport. Many thanks to VCR!

Yelp
The initial service was great when we arrived, the gentleman made helpful suggestions etc . Because of our late departure we pre-arranged to turn the vehicle in later on our departure date. That went precipitously bad on our last day. After calling to confirm our arrangements, I received notice that the vehicle was over due, they were unwilling to take us back to our villa and lastly a nasty threat on my voicemail threatening to call the police. And how late was the vehicle when said message was left? 39 minutes. Which at that time was due to us having to make alternate arrangements with our property managers so we could get to the airport as I was told Vieques Car Rental would be closed. When we arrived at their office, the female at the counter was rude, and down right ignorant. I have come to learn that she is not affiliated with the owners and although I would hate to disparage anyone's business, this was a Horrible end to a pleasant vacation. Stay far, FAR, away from this outfit, until they learn to appreciate every customer and treat them and their money with the respect they deserve.
