Vigilius Mountain Resort

"Located high in the Alps and reachable only by cable car, Vigilius is a slice of paradise at 5,000 feet. Whether soaking in the tub, dining on Northern Italian cuisine in the elegant restaurant, eating South Tyrolean fare on the terrace, doing laps in the indoor pool, or even relaxing in the sauna, you will be astounded by views of pine-covered peaks and celestial snowcapped mountains. All 41 open-plan rooms have a freestanding stone wall that separates the living and bath areas. The meditation room and the Paradise Garden are spectacular settings for yoga, qigong, and just recharging. On average, there are 300 days of sun a year in the South Tyrol, and the restaurant provides a hearty picnic for Nordic walking, mountain biking, and other outdoor sports (with or without a guide). The hotel closes for two weeks in November for cable car maintenance."

Vigilius Mountain Resort, Vigiljoch Mountain, near Merano, South Tyrol - Explore & Book

"In the seven minutes it takes to whoosh up the mountain (a cable car is the only way to go), you will feel reborn. On a Vigiljoch summit, a mile above the Ultimo Valley, the air is crisp, clean and scented with pine forest; the views are sensational, ice-capped Dolomites seen from green (or snowy) alpine slopes. And for once, the contemporary hotel is a perfect match for the landscape. Designed by Milan-based architect Matteo Thun, it’s straight out of the pages of Wallpaper*: a 21st-century take on the Tyrolean lodge, with two decks of rooms housed in low rectangles of glass, clad in horizontal bars of larch. Inside, all is crisp clean-cut geometry and warm earth colours, big vistas and glittering quartz striped with sunlight and shade. From the huge cow hide sofas in the lobby, travel along runways of gallery-like space to the piazza, and on to the spa with a springwater infinity pool. Wander up to the panorama terrace and watch the sunset or the dawn. Like all proper resorts, everything you need is right outside the door. Highs An exercise in holistic ‘ecotecture’, this linear building is a work of artHanging out in the piazza – the sunken, sunlit courtyard at Vigilius' heart, lined with plush red sofasBathing in the spa’s frothy al fresco hot tub under a blue sky or a canopy of snowy pines – absolute blissTwo excellent restaurants: choose between haute cuisine and rustic Tyrolean fareNo roads, no traffic, just the distant sound of cow bells – a complete escape Lows Prepare to feel isolated - but you do get unlimited use of the cable car and chairlift during your stay If you are expecting a typical Italian ambiance, you may be surprised: South Tyrol is bilingual Italian-German, with scenery more reminiscent of AustriaIf you don't like minimalism, you may find the interiors a bit pared downThe WiFi gets turned off at night, but not until 11pm (plus no phone use permitted in communal areas - the focus here is on a digital detox)" - Lesley Gillilan

"Vigilius Mountain Resort is set at the top of a mountain in South Tyrol, along the Italian-Austrian border. The hotel is accessible only by cable car, a 1500-meter ascent. The design of the resort itself is strikingly modern — blonde on blonde, lots of bare wood and exposed timbers, and a healthy dose of stone and concrete, blunting any tendencies toward log cabin-ness." - Tablet Hotels

10/10. This place is spectacular! Only accessible by cable car to top. The resort is an architectural dream. Restaurant provides breakfast and dinner if you do not want to leave the resort. The spa and the views are serene. We visited the pool each day, cold pool and warm pool. Plenty of lounge chairs. Happy hour with one complimentary drink and snacks. The staff was amazing. There is a path that takes you on a 40 minute trek. You can then take a chair lift to go higher and take another trek. Highly recommend a stay at this amazing location. If you are looking for a peaceful, quiet place to unwind and decompress….this is it.

Vigilis Mountain Resorts is a retreat you remember by its scent—cedar‑rich wood interiors warmed by radiant floors, alpine air through open windows, and a soft fireplace note at night. It’s quiet and private, with beautifully kept grounds and well‑designed rooms. Breakfast is a highlight: easy to snag a sunny table, with excellent fruit (crisp apples) and breads. Staff were thoughtful and proactive—helped me navigate an Italy train strike. The mountain water is delicious straight from the tap, perfect for filling bottles. I didn’t try the restaurants or activities this time, but there are plenty on offer.

We had an amazing experience at Vigilius. Upon arrival there is a private parking lot at the bottom of the mountain, from there you are welcomed at the cable car and take the scenic route up. Once up, you are welcomed once more by an employee who brings you to your room. The hotel oozes relaxation. A moment to truly escape the rush of everyday life. The rooms are perfectly sized and have a balcony that allow you to enjoy the night sky filled with stars. Definitely take the walk up the mountain the views are breathtaking!

Wow. We came here for our honeymoon and were not disappointed. Everything about it was beautiful, thoughtful and tasteful. We found the service personable and courteous. The clientele were primarily German, Italian and (international) English speaking and the staff could switch effortlessly back and forth. I guess one of the unique cultural features of South Tyrol.||Far and away what we most appreciated was the calm and tranquil setting, far up away from the banal noises of the city. Already I am missing being free from hearing the constant rumble of cars. The other guests were by and large also very respectful and quiet, though they do allow dogs which I’m not as ecstatic about (one was barking away one night which was pretty disruptive given the otherwise serene setting). We also appreciated the textile-free sauna and enjoyed a few massages and facials. There is only one sauna room but it is plenty big enough to share between 4-5 couples at a time (plus a small steam room). Plenty of room on the various sun decks. The views from the hotel were fantastic, though dependent on it being a clear day (it can get very foggy at times). The food was also excellent and, though expensive, not unfairly priced (for quality). Some of the staff seemed a bit new, but we really liked our servers. The breakfast buffet was enjoyable and both restaurants were superb too. However, I was kind of disappointed that the Ida Stubbe (Tyrolean fare) was not open after 18.00, which left the only dining option later on in the evening as the expensive Michelin restaurant, which we did not want every night (we actually brought takeaway pizza from the city instead - it was ok but it would have been nice to have a more affordable alternative on-site for those who are not on the half-board plan). ||The only other real downside (more of a double-edged sword) is being reliant on taking the gondola up. It did truthfully create minor stresses as a few times we were rushing back to make the lift time (they only run hourly in the evenings). That was the only real stressful aspect of an otherwise relaxing stay. On the other hand, of course the gondola is what gets you up far away from the cars. I’m not sure what the gondola economics are but maybe it could just run every 15-20 minutes, and skip the trip if there is no one waiting. As for parking there is free parking at the base but you have to send your license plate number ahead of time (new rule), and you have to get the gate code for the covered lot - easy enough. It is a bit of a game of Tetris parking your car down there if it is getting full, so maybe not for the inexperienced parkers (though, Italy in general is not for the inexperienced drivers).||Lana is easily walkable from the foot of the gondola, though we found it to be a bit of a sleepy and not quite so interesting town (at least as far as wandering around goes). There are a few clothing shops, a bookstore and some restaurants and cafes, as well as an Aldi and Lidl.||We did do some hiking around Vigiljoch, which was convenient and pleasant enough. There are also lots of fantastic hiking spots nearby near Meran (Texengruppe) and a bit further away in the Dolomites. Worth it if you’ve got a car and came for an active adventure. It seems Vigilius caters both to active hikers and to those just seeking rest and relaxation. It is a high-class treat but not pompous or ostentatious. By and large you are paying not for showy frills but rather for tranquility, quality and attention to detail. In our case we used Marriott points and found that to be a no-brainer. I’m not sure if we would pay the half-board plan unless we really valued having the Michelin-star dinners every night, which some may well do but personally we don’t. We are not usually five-star travellers so I can say that we are not as demanding in terms of being pampered, having all the amenities or engorging in the lap of luxury. What I can say was the star of the show was being in comfort in the middle of nature. To go out on the balcony and only hear birds singing and the wind rustling through the trees, and no background noise of car engines and tires - that was so welcome. Plus the views with the Dolomites towering in the background, and the fog creating mysterious and enchanting nature shows. The building did have a timeless elegance, too - it has a really cool retro vibe while still feeling fresh and modern at the same time.||We are already looking forward to returning sometime, perhaps for a wedding anniversary :) Danke, Grazie, Vigilius!

This is my very favorite hotel worldwide. That said, it's not for everyone. If you want a hotel with a gym full of weights and treadmills, TV in the room, pizza delivery, a/c on the mountainside, etc this isn't the right place. Vigilius is about taking a break from all those things which have become all too common in our daily lives and enjoying the serenity and beauty of the area in a luxurious yet unpretentious setting. Hotel guests receive free parking at the base of the mountain and unlimited use of the cable car as well as the single chairlift which continuous up to the peak (single chairlift is open seasonally). The cable car runs every half hour until 7 pm and then every hour until 11pm. It's an easy walk from the base station to several restaurants in town if you want to eat off the mountain. In summer months, you can take the single seater lift to the peak where a delightful and reasonably priced restaurant awaits. There are several other great places to eat hiking 30 minutes to 2 hours depending on where you choose to go. Lots of great options in addition to the onsite restaurant. The hotel grounds include a pool filled with super clean and clear mountain water (note, the pool is designated a quiet area, children are allowed until 5pm but no jumping, splashing, shouting, etc), a yoga room, a gorgeous library and several indoor and outdoor seating areas. Everything is beautiful and comfortable. The rooms are extremely comfortable with wonderful beds and bedding, good showers, soap that smells so good and even a quality daypack to use when out exploring. Breakfast in the 1500 is included. Again, the quality and service is perfect. It's a wonderful way to start the day I would also highly recommend booking yourself a treatment in the spa onsite.

Our family had a great time relaxing and taking in the breathtaking views at Vigilius. We thoroughly enjoyed using the facilities available especially the pool, sauna and spa. And the staff were all very kind and helpful with all we required. Overall our stay was a highlight of our trip so far to Italy.

Beautiful place to stay and nature all around but service from this hotel was not great. All style no substance for me unfortunately.

Super zen, amazing matteo thun architecture. Very good food and service but the worst cocktails we’ve ever had! The pool area gorgeous and the rooms fabulous with great views. Great base for hiking and mountain biking or in our case just chilling!
