Iceland Named the Safest Country for Travel in 2025

"Fields of lupins in bloom frame a small town church in a pastoral, low-traffic setting, captured in a photograph credited to Marco Bottigelli/Getty Images. The image accompanied an article about the nation's top ranking in a 2025 travel-safety report; the report highlights features reflected in the scene, noting it has "one major road" and is "never crowded," which together convey a strong sense of rural tranquility. The same report adds a practical caveat about volcanic activity while also remarking on locals' relaxed attitude toward it." - Stacey Leasca Stacey Leasca Stacey Leasca is an award-winning journalist and co-founder of Be a Travel Writer, an online course for the next generation of travel journalists. Iceland Itineraries: From 1 Weekend to 1 Month (Updated 2025)

"I climbed the hill to the small Vík i Myrdal Church for a complete vista overlooking the town of Vík and the ocean — it’s a short stop that rewards you with a scenic viewpoint and a coffee at a local café afterward." - Matthew Kepnes

Vík í Mýrdal Church, located in the town of Vík in southern Iceland, is a beautiful church known for its white walls and red roof. Built in the 1950s, it stands on a hilltop offering stunning views of the town, coastline, and surrounding mountains. Its simple yet warm design harmonizes beautifully with the natural landscape, making it a popular photo spot. When I visited, many tourists were there as well, enjoying the breathtaking scenery.

Vík í Mýrdal Church in South Iceland is a charming gem! Perched on a hill, this iconic white church with a red roof offers stunning views of the village, Reynisdrangar sea stacks, and the ocean. Its simple, classic design feels peaceful and welcoming. Easily accessible with nearby parking, it’s perfect for a quick visit or photos, especially at sunset when the light is magical. The surrounding wildflowers and serene atmosphere add to its charm. Visiting early avoids crowds. This picturesque church is a must-see for anyone exploring Vík’s breathtaking coastal beauty!

Beautiful view point over the town of Vik and out to the ocean. Incredible views of the mountains. Beautiful old church. Well worth a look.

I have visited in late Oct 25. It is a small peaceful town with beautiful scene.

It’s an easy 5 min drive if you are in Vik. The view from the top of the hill where the church is located is beautiful with a view of the ocean and the city.

Not the most impressive tourist site. A small, white clad church sitting in the middle of an asphalt moonscape, big enough to accommodate the frequent busses that pull up and expel hoardes of miserable looking tourists. The views over Vik are good though

Nice view from up there, but if u are planning on visiting Vík just because of this church it's not worth it, there are a lot of similar churches around Iceland, I'd say this one is a bit overrated.

This is a traditional Icelandic church situated upon a hillside overlooking the town of Vik. It was built in 1934 and has a white exterior and rust colour roofing. The church is fronted by a tower and has a single nave that can seat around 450 people. There are nice views of Vik and the surrounding seascape from the church and carpark as well. Worth a brief visit if staying around Vik or planning to spend a bit of time there while driving around the Ring Road in the south of Iceland.
