This is such a great place! I usually head here right after I arrive into Munich for the express purpose of having a Bratwurst at Schlemmermeyer and walking around this incredible market. I only wish I still lived in Munich as there are so many times I would love to purchase and take home to cook and prepare! You could spend hours in here, walking, people-watching, eating, drinking. Such a wonderful place to take in the city, and I always feel there are more locals here than tourists. While there are many areas of Munich that are incredible, this is always a great place to stop, eat, drink and rest your feet.

Love this place so many places to eat- there's walk ups for sausages and sandwiches and also to buy fresh fruits and flowers and coffee. I enjoy the fruit so much! There are smaller restaurants but here in Munich most require a rsvp in advance by phone call or email. I wanted to try some of the seafood places, but they were full and not accepting walk ins. Der Schorr is a big pub with restaurant and also outdoor bar area that was full all the time and very happening at night with their indoor tenting and dance music. Service is helpful and good value, but it is a farmers market so most vendors close by 8 pm. On a Friday night, we were able to walk into Eataly that borders here and get food without much waiting.

Highly, highly recommend visiting Vitualienmarkt if you're visiting Munich. During my first we stopped by most days of our trip and I fell in love with Kaffee Roasterie Viktualienmarkt and went every single day after discovering it. You'll find fresh produce, hot foods, meats, crafts, gifts and so much more at the different vendor booths. We typically visit in the morning or early afternoon and when we've visiting it's been busy but not overly crowded. Especially after visiting the Christkindlmarkt nearby that was so, so crowded, it was a welcome change to have space to look around. We always do our best to speak German while we're here and the different shop owners and staff have always been very kind and many will speak English with you, since they see so many tourists. There is so much to look at in the area, from the historical buildings to the food stalls and all the nearby businesses in brick and mortar spots. This is one of my favorite places to visit while we're in Munich and we really do try to stop by every day to explore, grab coffee and grab some delicious local food.

One of our favorite Christkindlmarkts while we were in Munich. There were lots of local shops with fresh produce as well as local meats, breads, and other restaurants. Things weren't too crowded either.

Viktualienmarkt is the famous and historic Open Air Market in Munich. It has been a bustling hub for fresh produce, local delicacies, and traditional and local Bavarian goods since its founding in 1807. The market was originally established by King Maximilian I of Bavaria as an expansion of the overcrowded market at Marienplatz. It has a 140 stalls and shops. It's overwhelming. It has fresh flowers, herbs, spices, breads, desserts, cheeses, wines, you name it, they got it. Many of the vendors have been operating their stalls for generations, passing down recipes and expertise.

July 8, 2024 - they were closed Sunday and we went there several times to grab snacks and a meal there. It wasn't as big as I thought it was going to be. They had similar foods everywhere. Though, the fruits and vegetables to purchase were amazing to look at. The Juice Bar we got was all right. It is worth going there and is located just a walk away from the MarienPlatz. There was one place there that sold the most olives I've ever seen in my whole life anywhere in the world. At least where I've traveled. I've been to 30 countries and was very impressed. See photos.

This is a must-see while in Munich. There's lots of local shops carrying an array of cheeses, honey, breads (and pretzels), veggies, pickles, a cafe, and more. There's also a beer garden here with plenty of seating in the shade. Stop here to look around and stay for a bite to eat in the beer garden while you're here! There's even a maypole.

Gourmet delights abound! Don't miss this jewel. Crowded but worth it. Seafood, bratwurst, fresh flowers, wine, and of course plenty of beer.

It's a great place to have a beer and lunch if you're in the area. This is a large market with a lot of different places to eat. You have options for restaurant seating outside, but you can also "self-serve" for people who just bought a pretzel and want to sit while they people watch. Pricing is as diverse as the food choices, so don't worry about breaking the bank here. We decided to get service, and it was perfect. These servers work their tail off and burn a billion calories daily.

Wonderful Outdoor Market. Loved coming when it's less crowded in the mornings to fully explore, chat, and, shop at the variety of kiosks. Fun-Filled Crowded Beer Garden. When seated, nice it was to chug beers and nibble at the food from the market in the afternoons. CHEERS!

This is such an awesome spot in Munich Old Town! It's fun shopping each stall! There is so much variety to look at, and you must stop for a beer and a snack. Folks were very nice and helpful! Prices are very reasonable for everything I found.

Great outdoor stalls with plenty of restaurant and fresh smoothie and fruit options. Fresh market, fresh flowers. We came during the Munich Pride festival so it was crowded with plenty of vendors in tents, music, and people. I didn't like the open air smoking so no fresh air. The food is delicious but many do not have sit down options so we walked with our food. Beautiful historical buildings with lots of locals and tourists alike. Family friendly, lots of walking

We stopped by this area several times during our stay in Munich. Great little shops and all kinds of foods to sample. The beer garden is a great place to people watch and enjoy some adult refreshments.

Amazing place in Munich. So much fun to be had here and especially the beer. This market is full of activity with locals and tourists enjoying beer and a variety of food available from so many vendors. There are butcher shops, cheese shops, German food, snacks, bakeries, fruit and vegetable stands, souvenirs shops, craft stores, and off course the beer garden. Walk around to see what you like to have, grab something and sit in the beer garden to enjoy and meet people. This is a must visit in Munich.

A must visit when in Munich. So many local vendors with food, souvenirs and produce. A lot of fun stalls to look at and shop around. They also have a fun biergarten with local beer on tap and tasty bratwursts. A great place to experience some authentic German goods.

A famous market in the heart of Old town Munich open every single day! I visited this market no less than about 6x while in Munich for 9 days. I sampled the foods, had gelato, bought gifts, bought coffee, bought wine, bought honey, sat in the beer garden and had a drink.... shopped the nearby shops, went into the church adjacent.... you name it, I basically did it. Fresh flowers, foods, wine, and tons of gifts and crafts can be found here. It is easy to find just near the New and Old Town Halls and is close to the Marienplatz station for ease of getting to from around town.

There are 140 stalls and shops- shopping, food, beer garden and souvenirs. The maypole found at the center is of interest. It has figures that display the trades and crafts from this part of Munich.

The must do must see feature of Munich. I was going to review individual stalls but everything is pretty great here. From the butchers, the bakers, the candlestick makers they all rule! Staying in Munich for a while this was my go to place for fresh produce and provisions. If you want amazing fish, meat, veggies, etc go here. Also there are lovely food stands with Bavarian staples. Do not miss this market.

Crazy busy area on Saturdays. You can get any kind of food, beer, and some trinkets/clothing/toys. It was so packed and most picnic type seating was gone. Try to get there earlier and not deal with the constant milling of people trying to get what they want. It's a free-for-all, and people will not hesitate to cut in line. As a visitor, I was taken aback by the rudeness. The food was good, but I had a lot of waiting and work to get it. Definitely go early.

Viktualienmarkt is a historic market in Munich, Germany, with an estimated 140 stalls. One of my friends I was traveling with is really into sausages and bratwurst, so we ended up here a couple times during our visit, as Viktualienmarkt is known to have some of the best around. With a central location, coming here was very convenient and not out of the way at all. Viktualienmarkt is very close to a number of famous sights and attractions. If looking for a nice German market to shop around at, this may be one of your best options. Equipped with gourmet foods, a beer garden, and much more, there's something for everyone. One of my favorite stalls was a fresh juice stand called Saftbar Tretter. The juice was great, the pretzels from the Beer Garden were among the best of the trip, and the ambiance was nice. Definitely a local farmer's market vibe to it, which is great.

Open Monday to Saturday and closed on Saturdays, the Viktualienmarkt is the main farmer's market of Munich. It's located quite close to the Marienplatz and so it gets a good crowd of browsers and tourists going through. More than 100 stalls here, we learned on our tour that many of them have been handed down from generation to generation. There are tight regulations on making any significant changes to the stalls as well. In this place since a regal decree by King Maximillian I in 1807, there are flowers, butchers, beers, sausages, spices, cheese, fish, produce and more. It is a pedestrian zone and I think they need to get some vehicle bollards in place. Lots to see and eat and drink here. Look for the Maypole! [Review 12026 overall, 1809 of 2019.]

The best market anywhere, highly recommend! Fische Witte, Biergarten, Tölzer Käseladen, Kaffeerösterei, Sauer Ecke are all fantastic.

Probably my favorite place in Munich. Awesome market to just walk around and hang out in. Great variety of food and drinks and overall just a good atmosphere. Found myself here multiple times in our stay in Munich.

Viktualienmarkt is a must-stop in Munich. I've been before, and it was so comforting to be back. This is a good place to pick up some souvenirs or gifts, or just to treat yourself. There are lots of tasty food options. Our favorites are Luiginos, which seriously has the most AMAZING panini sandwiches, and the kaffeerösterei, which has some pretty tasty roasts and tastier florentines (plus chandeliers for ambiance). There are tons of fresh produce vendors, as wells as spices, dessert stalls, wineries, and tons more. I nabbed some delectable truffle brie, that was pricey, but so worth the splurge. Though it's in the heart of a tourist area it doesn't feel touristy and is full of lots of authentic flavors and sellers, and is frequented by Germans and Munich-dwellers as well as visitors.

I rarely meet a food market I don't like, and this one is one of the greats. It's located in downtown Munich near the tourist areas yet it's not touristy. Sure, some stands sell magnets and beer steins, but this is a local's market where all are welcome. Some stalls are better than others, but you'll find all sorts of goodies from sausages to fresh produce to cheeses to spices. There are several places where you can eat a quick lunch (think hearty soups, grilled sausages, cheese platters). I came here every day during my long weekend in Munich. It's a wonderful place to buy foodie-centric souvenirs (like the homemade wurst spice I bought). Note that this is a totally outdoor market but it still operates in inclement weather -- so bring an umbrella or jacket if it's wet or chilly.

If you are looking for fun market experience, you've come the right place. I've been to similar places in London and Barcelona, while not as big, still really cool. I got a tasty, spicy hot dog with curry sauce, chocolate covered bananas, ice cream and fresh OJ. Great vibe and tons of people drinking outside having a good time

Excellent place to visit while in Munich!!! It's centrally located right near Marienplatz and is within walking distance of all the the major landmarks. We visited here all 3 days and Munich and the place does not disappoint. Such a wide array of fruits and vegetables and cute little eateries all over the place. I even sampled a grape that tasted exactly like a strawberry. Yum!! The biergarten is huge and fills up quickly. The benches without tablecloths are first come and communal seating. So if your sitting at one of the tables, scoot down and make friends. Local and visitors alike all mingle here and it's a real party with that liter of beer in your hand. This is a must do while in Munich.

This is such a cool place to take in the culture of daily life. When we came, the fall foliage was just starting to turn, and the weather was sunny but cool, which made all the walking around outside a breeze. There's so much amazing stuff here! Lots and lots of shops with fresh food and drink that you can check out, and plenty of specialty shops like cheese or fruit. I also really appreciated the artisans selling their crafts; there were a ton of people creating beautiful wreaths and floral arrangements, and their booths always smelled heavenly. I'd definitely recommend a visit. It's also quite close to the city center, so you can make a trip of both things at once.

Food: 5/5 Service: 4/5 Cleanliness: 5/5 Decor & Style: 5/5 This is an outdoor market that has a lot to offer, and by far has the best street pork I have ever had in my life! With fast access to beer and street food one can easily spend many, many hours here. They even have fresh juicing here as well and many nick nacks to buy. The markets and streets are very clean and looks beautiful and I can easily say it's probably my top 3 street market of all time!

It took us a couple of days to realize where this market was but it has an amazing selection of common goods and secret finds. We unfortunately spent way over budget at Herrmann Geschenke on beer steins, COO COO clocks and 3 tiered pyramid's. A little extra busy due to the Seahawk fans at Augenstiner and the NFL in town. So crowded everywhere. Lot's of authentic Bavarian markets and delicious roasted chestnuts.

Amazing!! I dont know where to start but this is a great place to eat and to look for souvenirs. probably one of my favorite places. Fruits, cheese, beer, fresh juice its like farmers market on crack :) Absolutely love it! Be careful its closed on Sundays like the rest.

This open space is great for food, drinks and being social! Even the layout of the long communal tables placed close together encourages social interaction! There are a few seating areas, near the center, with many little shops, take away restaurants, butchers, and more - where you can grab what you want and come and sit down here. There is almost anything you'd want here! This market has a great atmosphere, great food and is overall just a great time. Everything we've had here was absolutely delicious and was one of my favourite spots in Munich. You can't go wrong with a beer and a sausage! We went to Müller-Brot AG for German donuts! They had a deal where you can get 3 for 3 euros or something even cheaper! I remember it being really cheap. But yeah the donuts definitely satisfied that sweet tooth! I tried sausages from two places, Schlemmermeyer GmbH & Co. KG , which is on the north side of the market - and Biergarten am Viktualienmarkt, which had sausages and beers! They were both so good, but I think the first place was slightly tastier and juicier. But honestly the difference is barely anything.

Definitely, a must if you visit Munich, a lot of places to find food or buy vegetables. Also, there is a small Biergarten in the middle for the sunny days!

This market was the highlight of my visit to Munich. We visited on an overcast summer day and it was lightly raining. The market was packed and it was hard to find somewhere to sit but after about 5 minutes of walking around we found a table with some other people and had a great time. Everyone was very friendly. My sister and I both ordered sausages, pretzels, and beer. It was a great meal and the prices were very good. After we ate we walked around the market. There are all types of stalls with items such as hot foods, beer, cheeses, meats, ice cream, cookies, home decorations and souvenirs. It was a great way to spend an hour or so. We were able to purchase gifts and buy an ice cream cone. The market is located next to a plaza with old builds that are beautiful. I absolutely loved visiting the market and if I ever decided to return to Munich this market and the nearby area would be the only reason. You will need to make sure you bring cash. None of the vendors we encountered accepted plastic. Luckily there was an ATM in the market but you will pay high fees to use it.

Without a doubt this was one of the best places I stumbled upon during my time in Munich. It is a vast and popular outdoor market that's full of beer, food, farmer's market items and little trinkets to buy. It was also rather lovely to visit around Easter weekend given the atmosphere and the lovely crowds. There was no shortage of appetizing food to gaze at and enjoy here. The main beer garden in the center of the square was also packed and bustling all around. The next time I'm in Munich, I'm definitely stopping by again as all of the items here looked delicious. The proximity of this place to Marienplatz also makes it a very appealing place to visit if you're looking to take in a lot of local sights, sounds and food.

Viktualienmarket was the perfect place to walk around, eat, drink, and people watch. I found it to be friendly for tourists and locals. The location is central near many train stations, main streets, and pretty walkable if you're staying in the central/historic district. There were many stalls filled with food, beer, and trinkets (baskets, German Christmas pyramids, etc.). The food we had at many of their booths (and I say many because we had lunch here every day) was delicious. The best part is getting a beer and walking the market, people watching and enjoying the fresh air. In Germany beer is taxed as food and therefore any place where you can eat, you can drink. So buy a beer and walk around! Also, everyone we encountered was amicable and spoke English​! Thank goodness because​ I was surely butchering the few German words I knew. It was very nice to be surrounded​ by different languages! If you speak Spanish, Italian, French, English, and Russian, I found that most people knew one, if not multiple languages​, and you will be perfectly fine communicating. As a tip- in Germany,​ almost all shops are closed on Sunday so keep it in mind if you plan on visiting. While we found a few food vendors open, it was constrained​.

Very neat open air market filled with tons of goodies. It's just a really nice place to walk around in and see all the foods that are for sale. It's in very close proximity to so many other sites in Munich that it's well worth the visit.

If you are ever in Munich, this is a must. If you live in Munich, then you already know about this place. I was here for a conference and had a few hours to kill during the day so I decided to take an Uber over here and see what good stuff I could find. What a gem! The local merchants of produce, wine, cheese, and other great items kept me fascinated and made it such a wonderful place to peruse and shop. And the many tables set up with people drinking great coffee or beer and enjoying their time with each other created such an energetic vibe, it was so easy to into. I ended up buying some cheese to bring back to the hotel with me and nibble on, and a few souvenirs to bring back to the US. All of the merchants were incredibly friendly and spoke english, so it was easy to business with. It was also close to their busy Marienplatz so you can make a full day of the walking, shopping, and eating. Loved it!

Viktualienmarkt was at the top of my list of places to go while in Munich. My sister and I decided to do a hop-on, hop-off bus and we were very happy to find out that it stopped in Marienplatz which is just a couple minute walk from Viktualienmarkt. I am not too proud to say that I first found out about Viktualienmarkt from watching Rick Steve's show and really wanted a beer and pretzel here. We were lucky enough to arrive in early afternoon before it rained too much. We were able to walk around the various booths, looking at food products, locally made decorations, flowers, gelato and much much more. It was a great way to spend a couple hours surrounded by both locals and tourists. There is an ATM in the center of the market and there are also restrooms so you don't have to go find a hotel or something. Definitely try a gelato, I had a dairy-free cherry gelato and I can say it was one of the most amazing things I had in Europe. How it was dairy-free, I have no clue! I would easily return here if I were back in the area.

When in Munich, you must visit the Viktualiemarket. It is centrally located just beyond Marienplatz. There are so many food vendors to choose from for a meal or snack and a lovely little biergarten in the middle. You can order your food from the restaurant attached to the Biergarten, or bring your food from one of the other stands. There are a lot of merchants offering fresh produce, flowers, meats, cheeses, handmade goods and much more. It's a lovely place to get unique items and support local business. It was raining off and on the afternoon we were there, so it wasn't terribly busy. The only downfall was the pigeons hanging around trying to steal food from people's plates!

The Viktualienmarkt is an attraction in itself, but it is also a great spot to go for lunch in the middle of a day of Munich sightseeing. There are plenty of options, so you can find something to suit everyone in your group. Even horse sausage. True story: My friends and I had entered the market only a few minutes before, staggered by all the choices, trying to figure out what to get, when out of the diminutive shop in front of which we happened to stand--not much more than a glorified shack, really--stepped a small old woman. Her face was very wrinkled, but practically beaming, as she approached us to offer her absolutely unsolicited advice. Unlike with most Müncheners, there was a severe language barrier, but in the course of a few moments' conversation, between her very broken English and my toddler-grade German, her message emerged: "Go in here. Get the horse sausage. You won't regret it." Eh? Horse sausage? We shuffled our feet and drawled equivocatingly. Then I figured "Eff it. When in Rome, brother." So my buddy Amit and I stepped into the shop while our three more timid friends remained outside. It looked just like any butcher shop--a long glass cold case full of chops, steaks, sausages, ground meat, etc. None of the clerks spoke any English, as we stood there asking "Horse? Horse sausage? Cheval? Horse? Anyone?" Thankfully there were some buddies of one of the clerks hanging out there, one of whom spoke English and cheerfully stood to our rescue. "Which is the horse sausage?" I asked. The friend translated. The clerk, looking confused, asked a similarly phrased question back to the friend. "Ja," said the friend. The clerk turned back to us and swept his arm across the entire store. "Horse. All horse." Wow, we were in an all-horse butcher shop. I knew then that this was going to be one of the most sublime experiences of my life. I felt like a total rube, but inside I was smiling enormously. So we asked for whatever horse sausage the old lady was talking about, and what they dished up was actually a mega-sweet deal--for two euros we got two short, fat sausages out of a crock pot, with a crusty roll and some mustard on the side. It was a damn cheap lunch and of course the story is priceless. And how was the horse sausage? I wouldn't eat it again, at least not with all the other excellent and tasty choices in the Viktualienmarkt, but it wasn't bad. The sausage was soft and light-colored, similar to weisswurst in look and texture. But anyway--whether or not you visit the horse butcher, do not miss the Viktualienmarkt. Cheap, quick lunches abound, and you cannot beat the atmosphere.

Munich is wonderful. Love September here. This market carries great wines and fresh flowers. It's cool. Then go grab a pint at one of the killer bars .
