Vila Santa Teresa, Santa Teresa, Rio, Brazil - Explore & Book

"Through the gates, past the palms, down the drive, to the last private estate in Rio, owned by the Monteiro de Carvalho family. From the modernist 1970s windows of this intimate haven (the most elevated of 4 homes on the estate) the eye sweeps across pool and emerald treetops to Rio, Sugarloaf Mountain and the bay beyond. The setting is breathtaking.Vila Santa Teresa may be one of the world’s most luxurious small hotels, but it feels like the house of a rather rich friend. The staff, who’ve been with the family for 20 years, treat each guest as an individual. Those who’ve stayed talk of exceptional service - impeccable yet personal, possible because there are only 7 rooms. Fancy a favourite wine to accompany your grilled escalope? There it is waiting, delightfully chilled. From the sink-into sofas to the gleaming glass tables to the massage under the mango tree, there’s perfection in every detail. Breakfast is served on the lawn or at the large table, and cocktails and canapés in the library or by the pool. Dinner - wherever you choose to have it - is divine. And if you don’t fancy negotiating the cobbled streets of Santa Teresa, a charming driver will appear as if by magic. Highs You’re treated as though the house is your ownImpeccable food, with a seasonally changing menuBeyond the Belle Epoque gates is the charming hillside quarter of Santa Teresa, all boho boutiques and barsDespite the fact you're in Rio, the vibe is more ‘luxurious country home’ than ‘luxurious urban hotel’Sublimely relaxing Lows Prices reflect the high levels of service and luxuryA 20-minute taxi ride from Rio's famous beachesNo under 16s: this is a romantic grown-up retreat (a high for most!)Only the Master Suite has a bathtub (walk-in showers in the other rooms)" - Handpicked by our hotel experts

"The standard locations for luxury hotels in Rio are Copacabana and Ipanema, but it’s safe to say that Vila Santa Teresa is anything but standard. This is no waterfront tower but a modernist mansion occupying what might be the last private estate within Rio’s city limits, high on a hilltop in the elevated Santa Teresa neighborhood, with appropriately jaw-dropping views, from Christ the Redeemer and Sugar Loaf Mountain down to the waters of Guanabara Bay." - Tablet Hotels

This place is a secret gem. Located on the top of a hill in the historical part of town in Santa Teresa, this old private property has been transformed into a small luxurious Oasis with the most stunning views over Rio that I have ever seen. The old private villa with a 70s charm has 8 suites with unbelievable views of the city, Bahia da Guanabara and the sugar loaf. Service is impecable, the villa has a very private feel. With a cigar room, a large living room and a small restaurant area which is also open to non-resident guests, however quite empty during our stay. The villa seems to be used for weddings given its location, great choice for this as well. We opted for a sunrise breakfast in the vast garden overlooking the city and Corcovado. The food is good, but lags behing the amazing hotel and location. This place is not cheap, but even for one or two nights, it is well worth the spent. Great location for special occasion.

Villa Santa Teresa is an incredible dining destination. Tucked away in a hidden spot, it offers a spectacular view of Rio de Janeiro. From the moment we arrived, the team made us feel incredibly welcome, giving us a brief tour of the property and sharing the fascinating history of the house.||||With only a few tables scattered across the garden and inside, the intimate setting made us feel right at home. If you’re looking for a private, exclusive dining experience—especially if you’re a celebrity or someone seeking a discreet spot—this is definitely the place to go!||||The food was outstanding, and the French-Brazilian fusion created by the head chef was both innovative and delicious.||||Villa Santa Teresa is absolutely a must-visit!

This hotel canceled our rooms a few weeks prior to arrival, leaving us scrambling to find last minute accommodations with very limited options therefore having to pay inflated prices. ||Our party booked five of the rooms at this property for Carnival 2025 months in advance. A few weeks prior to check in, the property contacted us and cancelled all of our reservations. The hotel said they had a “maintenance” issue and needed to close down the entire property. Due to these cancellations during likely the busiest week for tourism in Rio, Carnival, we all had to try to find different accommodations with very limited options given Carnival was a few weeks away. Needless to say the prices were exorbitant for these last minute bookings. The hotel offered to transfer us to what seemed to be an inferior sister property in inferior rooms to what was booked - which we declined.||Given the size of this property there are risks that don’t exist at larger, more established hotels. Maintenance issues, someone wants the entire property at a premium, etc these issues for a last minute cancellation are not a concern at larger properties, certainly not luxury hotels.

Amazing hotel with an amazing view! All the staff were super friendly, helpful and supportive, they made sure we had a great time and were always happy. All of them speak English so it was easy to communicate. The rooms have enough space and that bed is super comfortable, I wanted to take it with me. We did not have the pleasure to meet the chef, but the food was delicious. If we come back we would definitely stay here again. P.S. book a massage appointment totally worth it!

5-star experience in intimate setting. Property is atop Monmatre of Rio, and an escape from the Samba, bustle, and odors of Rio.

This hotel was more of an experience than just somewhere to stay! Just a handful of rooms - with an extraordinary situation right on top of one of the stunning hills overlooking Rio. Because of this incredible location, it's a bumpy and quite long taxi ride from the airport / centre - but it's well worth the bumpy ride to reach the peace and serenity of Vila Santa Teresa. We loved it. The staff were wonderful and could not do enough to help us. Yasmin and Veneesus in particular were so helpful and really went out of their way to make our stay an amazing experience! We thoroughly recommend this hotel for anyone who wants a peaceful haven from Rio's craziness, with lovely staff and the best view of Rio and Sugarloaf Mountain, I'm sure, of any hotel! The food was amazing too!

First class boutique hotel. It is up a hill overlooking Rio. |A lot of thought given to the Desigen. It is a converted colonial Portuguese mansion.|It is in a middle of a wonderful set of tropical gardens .|The sight of Rio from above is stunning. Rooms are very large nicely decorated. |Strong WiFi and in room smart TV with all sorts of streaming services. Warm and professional seevice.|Excellent cooked breakfast.|Excellent but rather pricey dinner (200$ us for 2). It is a very large dinner so easy to settle for 1 dinner shared by 2.|So all in all wonderful experience!|However : |The hotel is far from Rio city life.|Uber drivers refuse to go there as it is up a hill with a narrow road. Taxi drivers get lost!|So if you are intersted in the night life of Rio (we were not) and would like to use the hotel during the day think twice.|If you are looking for an oasis to relax at the end of a busy Rio day then this is the place!!|Ask the hotel for a typed explanation how to get there and give it to the taxi driver
