Villa del Faro, East Cape, Baja California Sur, Mexico - Explore & Book

"In 1989 a large extended family of LA-based artists, architects and writers bought 12 acres of land on the exquisite wild East Cape of Baja California Sur, where whales pass by and cacti bristle from the brush. They lived in tents on the endless empty beach, while painstakingly crafting Italianate dwellings around the trees and plants, creating a lush paradise from the desert. Mexican artisans handmade unique furniture, ironwork and carved mouldings for tiles and balustrades. The result is a loving and witty ensemble of vintage pieces, folk art, paintings for sale, fireplaces, rattan chairs, family collectibles and mementos. Immaculately tended tiered gardens, tropical plantings, terraces and palms, playful sculptures, paved walkways, neo-classical fountains, sit-outs, palapas and alcoves all lead to a lavish swimming pool, and on down to a pristine private beach on the turquoise Sea of Cortez. In the mid-Noughties they opened up the beautifully furnished suites and the impossibly romantic beach cottage to paying guests, converting the ping pong room to a dining palapa and serving superior Mexican influenced fare. We are forever grateful that they did. Highs The superbly remote setting is in a tropical oasis that cascades down the hillside to the sea, far from the hustle and bustle of CaboIt's an endearingly hospitable set-up: the family, who still live on the premises, welcome you warmly into their haven, but give plenty of privacy There's a big swimming pool with extensive terraces and a pool houseGenuine eco-principles were applied in the construction and continue to underpin the operationIt's ideal for those who seek quiet, relaxed adventure in beautiful, arid surroundings, whether honeymooners, a family or small group of friends Lows It's not for those wanting nightlife, shopping and golf courses - who should stick to Los CabosThis isn't a full service establishment where staff wait on you hand and foot; you're left to your own devices, though friendly advice is always on handThe beach immediately below Villa del Faro is rocky and can be rough, but fine for strong swimmersThe rooms are supremely comfortable, but don't expect any of the latest electronic gadgets: you're "exquisitely off the grid" hereIt's seriously off the beaten track: access is via a long bumpy dirt road, so you'll need a car for activities and alternative lunch/dinner venues (of which there are few)" - Nadine Mellor

I love this place. Remote and off grid. Just bring food and booze because there is nothing nearby and the road is barely a road. We ate breakfast and dinner at the house which was great. Not really a menu, just good food.

What a great place. More than an hotel it’s a unique experience. The property offers many places to relax such as a library, pool, living room, beautiful beach. We woke up to the sounds of waves and birds. All the staff are very kind.

This place is absolutely incredible! From the warm welcome by Hector to the delicious drinks crafted by Asiel, every moment here has been unforgettable. The staff and owner are genuinely the kindest people we've ever met. The rooms have everything you’ll need. Falling asleep to the sound of the ocean and waking up to birdsong is simply magical. And the food? Absolutely delicious! The best place we have ever stayed at. Will definitely come back!

Remote paradise. This was our 7th stay at Villa Del Faro - this time we brought family and friends (11 people) and took up 5 of the rooms. Our previous trips were in Dec or Jan with 1 stay in April. This time we went in the "shoulder season" of mid Oct. We were the 1st guest of the season at VDF. The views are as wonderful as ever. The pool was great and the Sea of Cortez was warm. There was nobody else on the beach. It is truly paradise when you can go for long strolls on the soft sand with the warm see washing over your feet and see only 4 other people the entire time. Over our various trips there we have stayed in Casita Dos North, Casita Dos South, Casita Tres, and Azul. All are great. Every room - including the main house, have been placed to optimize views. The grounds are beautiful and worth exploring. The food was great - as always. Service was wonderful - as always. Candy, Eddie, and the rest went out of there way to make our family members feel welcome. They accommodated the dietary restrictions for some of our family members without a blink of the eye and even helped arrange a birthday celebration. They have snorkeling equipment, boogie boards, surfboards, and a couple kayaks for you to borrow - all free of charge. Go down the beach and enjoy. Or drive up to Cabo Pulmo for some more serious snorkeling or down to 9 Palms for some bigger waves. Now - a few words to set expectations. First - weather. This trip was in mid-Oct - and it was hot. None of the rooms have AC. Some rooms cool down faster than others at night (Presidential Suite, Casa Alberca, Bali Room, and Stone Cottage). Fans are provided, but only do so much. Temps in Nov - March are much better for those who can't deal with the heat. Second - remote location and the drive The roads can be rough. They grade the main road in from the airport and some of the beach road in the October time-frame - after the storm season. So for most of our trips in Dec/Jan and April the roads were getting rough again. For this trip they had graded much of the inland road from SJD - that portion of the road was pretty smooth and the best of all our trips. But the last 1/3 of that road and the coastal road had not been graded and that was some of the worst we have had. Still passable in a 2-wheel drive SUV, but bumpy. In all our trips we have never had a major issue and we have explored much of the East Cape dirt roads over the years. So we are perfectly fine with the drive. On the other hand we have had 2 of our friends who went there on our recommendation complain about the drive - bumpy, confusing, etc. To each his own. Our opinion is that it isn't that bad and the roads are part of the reason why this is still paradise. Do NOT stay here and then write a review complaining about the roads. Do your research and look at their website. They are very clear about this. Third - small place = slightly limited service With only 8 rooms at reasonable prices, they cannot provide the staff for 24 hour service. So don't expect that. The excellent breakfast is provided in a certain time frame. The bar opens up at 5:00 pm. For dinner appetizers are at 6:30 followed by salads and mains with dessert. But in these time slots you will get great cocktails, excellent food with large portions, and wonderful service. Beer and wine are provided in the room for a fee. If you want more than that during the day, be prepared or drive 2 miles south to Vida Soul and get a margarita. Maid service is performed each day and your room is kept clean and fresh. So if you are looking for 24 hour service, meals whenever you want them, and cocktails served at the pool - stick with the places in Cabo. If you want a remote paradise that is quiet and beautiful with the adventures of the sea at your doorstep and the wilds of the desert around you, this is the place to come. We will be back - again.

Updated for a visit in March 2025... wifi is improved! The road along the east cape was as bumpy as ever. Rooms, service, food and wine all remain excellent. When we come again, we'll try another room, the North Casita is amazing, but we should try another room. It is a meticulously maintained property that was obviously built with an eye to quality and honouring Mexican culture. The rooms are beautiful. We stayed in the North Casita with the outdoor shower - absolutely stunning. Family run with many long term staff. Other accommodations we had in the area were not nearly as well maintained - there's not a spec of dust anywhere. Kudos to the staff, chef, and maintenance crew. Drinks and meals are very reasonable. We hope to come back and wish we had stayed longer. My only ask for the future would be wifi access in more locations. I did not have cell service and there is only cell service in and around the bar. Adding a response to some comments about the $45 dinner... In our experience, this was nothing but optional and a three course meal (not $45 per plate) Excellent value and the wines available (especially the Mexican ones) were very reasonable and very good.

Paradise! Food was so fresh and unforgettably delicious (vegetarian here)! Quiet and beautiful throughout. Art and details thoughtfully placed. Colorful and not “sterile” like many resorts. Saw whales from a distance, starry nights, fell asleep to the sound of the ocean. Would def come back!

Google
A truly unique, serene and beautiful place to stay, clearly grown organically from a sprawling estate. The rooms are delightful (although probably needing some attention in the bathrooms) and the views of whales we're breathtaking. Food was a very high standard of home cooking, with a three course set menu at dinner and a wide choice at breakfast. They are allergy aware unlike so many places. Margaritas watching whales we're unforgettable. My only real issue was with meal times. Breakfast at 9 was slightly late and dinner at 6:30 was way too early. Both mealtimes precluded walks on the beach at the best time for them.

Endless Sessions

Google
Absolutely perfect... Old world charm... The grounds are meticulously cared for and the rooms are amazing... I would recommend the Bali room which provides cool breezes and amazing views. Just could possibly be a once in a lifetime stay at this amazing hotel with the most beautiful and helpful staff. Highly recommended × 10

Yelp
Since my last review of VDF was in 2020, I thought it was time for me to do a quick update. In short, read my prior review, it still stands an an accurate representation of our experiences there. We have now stayed at Villa Del Faro 6 times prior to last week - 5 times in Dec or Jan and once in April. Every visit was a wonderful as our first. We have stayed in Casita Dos North, Casita Dos South, Casita Tres, and Azul. We have our favorite, but all are great. While we haven't stayed in the Stone Cottage on the beach, every time we have been there it was occupied and the people in it loved it - except for 1 person who was was scared of a gecko that was walking around in it while her partner loved it. This past week was our first visit in October. And not only was it my wife and I, but we brought the whole family - 11 people total in 5 rooms. There was 1 other person there in 1 of the other rooms on the property. As usual, the people at VDF were wonderful, gracious, and excellent hosts. One word of caution - it is still quite hot in Oct. They originally planned to open Oct 19 (as many places do in Baja), but they opened 4 days early to accommodate us. The rooms do not have AC, but they do have ceiling fans and put in additional fans for us in the rooms. So just be prepared if you come that early in the season. The meals were excellent and the accommodated several dietary issues such as 2 gluten free persons, 1 seafood allergy, and 1 person child who doesn't eat seafood. On our departure day, 9 of us had to leave early for flights (or driving people to flights) and they graciously made wonderful breakfast burritos for the drive. Speaking of the meals, this past January we decided to try a different place on the East Cape about 7 miles south of VDF. It was fine, but we found that we missed VDF and ended up driving there for dinner one night. During this trip we wanted to have a small birthday celebration while there and while 10 of us were off snorkeling in Cabo Pulmo, they worked with the 1 remaining person to set it up, hang the pinata's, set up dinner in a special area, etc. They even made 4 kinds of birthday cake (2 gluten free and 2 regular. As my first first stated, the roads are not for everyone - but they are passable. And the road in from the airport gets graded in mid Oct. So for this trip, since the road from the south along the coast had not been smoothed out yet since storm season, we took the route from SJD. It was pretty smooth for the first 2/3rds and quite interesting for the final 1/3. When we left on Sat, they had clearly progressed a little further. Since we normally come in Dec/Jan, our opinion is that the graded portions on this trip were the best and smoothest roads of all our trips, but the ungraded portions were some of the worst. And as my original review also stated: Paradise found ,,, hopefully not lost. There has been some development along this stretch of coast, but it is still pretty remote and as beautiful as when we first found it for ourselves.

Yelp
We went just for dinner while staying in the area. We had Seared Tuna caught that day. It was awesome. They serve dinner in courses. We had guacamole, Caesar Salad, the main course and carrot cake for dessert. It was dark so we didn't see much of the place but it looks gorgeous and the owners and staff are very engaging. We must go back! This is a great place for an Anniversary dinner.

Yelp
I can't say enough good things about this hotel. The rooms/cottages are spacious and very well appointed. A terrific Breakfast is included; dinner is optional. The food was so amazing we stayed for dinner every night. The menu was varied and delicious (no choices, except when it was a buffet). The staff couldn't be more helpful. If the location wasn't so remote (see Jeff's review), rates would be four to five hundred a night. We paid about half of that. The four days, three nights just flew by. We could walk to the swimming beach (best at high tide) and drove up the coast to Cabo Pulmo National Park (meh). Hated to leave. The caution: the family owners are selling the hotel (about $6 million, if you're interested).

Yelp
This is the most beautiful hotel we have been too. Every room / terrace / relax area has a lot of taste, everything is in the details. We booked the cheapest room (Bali Room) and I think it's the best one: breathing the fresh air of the ocean when sleeping is a blast, the views are to die for and that open shower is a great experience. The pool is marvelous (my husband said it's even better than the pools you see in drug cartels movies ;)) and its view is breathtaking. The breakfast is absolutely wonderful and very filling. The diners ($45) were a bit pricey but very good (also, when you realize how secluded that place is and how far you need to go to do groceries, you understand the price). The fish they served us was so fresh (caught in the morning) that it was worth all the pennies. You should also try their margaritas, they are the best one you will EVER have ($12). To finish, the "family" over there is absolutely wonderful. Marylin, Mary, Allie and Jeff are SO nice and are doing everything they can to make your stay absolutely perfect. There are a lot of things you activities you can do there: free kayaks, snorkel gears, SUPs ... WALKING ON THE BEACH FOR COUNTLESS HOURS. Cabo Pulmo is 40mn away and awesome divings over there (saw two bullsharks and thousands and thousands of fishes). My advice: rent a SUV or 4x4 to get there as there is about 1hr of dirt road from SJC airport to the Villa. Also withdraw money as not a lot of places around accept credit card.
