Villa del Faro, East Cape, Baja California Sur, Mexico - Explore & Book

"In 1989 a large extended family of LA-based artists, architects and writers bought 12 acres of land on the exquisite wild East Cape of Baja California Sur, where whales pass by and cacti bristle from the brush. They lived in tents on the endless empty beach, while painstakingly crafting Italianate dwellings around the trees and plants, creating a lush paradise from the desert. Mexican artisans handmade unique furniture, ironwork and carved mouldings for tiles and balustrades. The result is a loving and witty ensemble of vintage pieces, folk art, paintings for sale, fireplaces, rattan chairs, family collectibles and mementos. Immaculately tended tiered gardens, tropical plantings, terraces and palms, playful sculptures, paved walkways, neo-classical fountains, sit-outs, palapas and alcoves all lead to a lavish swimming pool, and on down to a pristine private beach on the turquoise Sea of Cortez. In the mid-Noughties they opened up the beautifully furnished suites and the impossibly romantic beach cottage to paying guests, converting the ping pong room to a dining palapa and serving superior Mexican influenced fare. We are forever grateful that they did. Highs The superbly remote setting is in a tropical oasis that cascades down the hillside to the sea, far from the hustle and bustle of CaboIt's an endearingly hospitable set-up: the family, who still live on the premises, welcome you warmly into their haven, but give plenty of privacy There's a big swimming pool with extensive terraces and a pool houseGenuine eco-principles were applied in the construction and continue to underpin the operationIt's ideal for those who seek quiet, relaxed adventure in beautiful, arid surroundings, whether honeymooners, a family or small group of friends Lows It's not for those wanting nightlife, shopping and golf courses - who should stick to Los CabosThis isn't a full service establishment where staff wait on you hand and foot; you're left to your own devices, though friendly advice is always on handThe beach immediately below Villa del Faro is rocky and can be rough, but fine for strong swimmersThe rooms are supremely comfortable, but don't expect any of the latest electronic gadgets: you're "exquisitely off the grid" hereIt's seriously off the beaten track: access is via a long bumpy dirt road, so you'll need a car for activities and alternative lunch/dinner venues (of which there are few)" - Nadine Mellor

Our family, including our two kids (7 year old and 10 year old), had an incredible stay at Villa del Faro. Villa del Faro is a gorgeous, meticulously maintained property with beautiful gardens and grounds. The pool is wonderfully refreshing and has an unbeatable view. We stayed in the Casa Alberca room, which is a gorgeous open-air room with a separate bedroom, living room, 1 1/2 baths, and full kitchen, that's right off the pool with stunning ocean views. The bedroom has a king bed and they added bunk beds for the kids. The bed was very comfortable and we all slept well with the sounds of the ocean waves in the background. We spent our days swimming in the pool or down at Baby Beach ( swimmable beach), and snorkeling at Cabo Pulmo (Arbolito Beach). Breakfasts at Villa del Faro are delicious and dinners were tasty and varied and very accommodating to dietary restrictions. The family that owns the Villa and the staff are welcoming, accommodating, and do their best to ensure your comfort. We took the coastal road to the hotel and the mountain road back to the airport. Be advised that on either route you drive a little over 1 hour on a bumpy dirt road with no cell reception. We rented a small SUV and didn't have any issues either way, but found the mountain road to be more difficult than the coastal road. It was 100% worth it to get to this truly special hotel and we would absolutely consider coming back again for a future vacation.

We really wanted to get away from it all and love the Sea of Cortez side of Baja. This place blew our minds. It's so beautiful and quiet and remote. All of the accommodations are so private and lovely. We stayed in Villa Tres and had our own private patio, which we loved. The little paths down the beach are so beautiful with birds and lizards and the beach is stunning. The staff and owners (who are onsite) are so lovely. We cannot wait to go back. Highly recommend if you want rest and relaxation in Baja's beauty.

This place is a true gem along the bumpy East Cape road. The architecture is amazing, the views of the ocean are amazing from every level of the B&B, the pool is wonderful, large and refreshingly cool on a hot day, the virtually vacant beaches below and on either side of the B&B are beautiful. (Almost every beach we visited on our way up the East Cape were beautiful and mostly vacant.) We saw whales in the ocean nearby at every breakfast. The separate two queen bed rooms we rented were very large, with a second room with the bathroom, dresser and chair, and a large shared front patio with couches, chairs and coffee table with a coffee maker and a small fridge. (Ice is available on request for happy hour or your day trips.) The accommodations and art work and details were very nice. The food (breakfast and dinner) was very good and authentic. The owner, manager, staff and the bartender were wonderful, helpful and very friendly. The cold beer upon arrival was a nice touch! You are off the grid at this resort (no cell service and the only wifi being available near the check in area and shared library). The B&B also has a couple of friendly cats and dogs on site, if that is your thing. At this property, you can simply relax at the pool or on the beach below, or make easy side trips to La Fortuna or Cabo Pulmo for beaches, snorkeling or lunch.

I love this place. Remote and off grid. Just bring food and booze because there is nothing nearby and the road is barely a road. We ate breakfast and dinner at the house which was great. Not really a menu, just good food.

What a great place. More than an hotel it’s a unique experience. The property offers many places to relax such as a library, pool, living room, beautiful beach. We woke up to the sounds of waves and birds. All the staff are very kind.

Another amazing stay at Villa del Faro. This time we brought the whole family and rented 5 rooms. The owners and staff went above and beyond with service, hospitality and even set up a birthday party for our kids. If you are looking for a standard Cabo hotel experience with the crowds, dont stay here. If you are looking for a unique, remote, and charming stay that you will never forget, this is the place. So nice to have dinner served every night just steps from the rooms after an active day in the pool, on the beach or snorkeling at Cabo Pulmo. Accomodations are easily made for vegan, gluten free, and any dietary needs. We will be back again!

Since my last review of Villa Del Faro was in 2020, I thought it was time for me to do a quick update.||In short, if read my prior review, it still stands an an accurate representation of our experiences there.||We have stayed at Villa Del Faro 6 times prior to last week - 5 times in Dec or Jan and once in April. Every visit was a wonderful as our first. We have stayed in Casita Dos North, Casita Dos South, Casita Tres, and Azul. We have our favorite, but all are great. While we haven't stayed in the Stone Cottage on the beach (just a little too rustic fror us), but every time we have been there it was occupied and the people in it loved it. Well, except for 1 person who was was scared of a gecko that was walking around in it, while her partner loved it. That was an interesting dinner conversation to overhear ;).||This past week was our first visit in the month of October. And this time we brought the family - 11 people total in 5 rooms. There was 1 other person there in 1 of the other rooms. One word of caution - it is still quite hot in Oct. They originally planned to open Oct 19 (as many places do in Baja), but they opened 4 days early to accommodate us. The rooms do not have AC, but they do have ceiling fans and put in additional fans for us in the rooms. So just be prepared if you come that early in the season.||As usual, the people at VDF were wonderful, gracious, and excellent hosts. During this trip we swam in the pool and in the warm sea, and some of us did a little snorkeling and boogie boarding at the adjoining beach - they have snorkeling equipment, boogie boards, surfboards, and even a couple of kayaks to borrow. most of us also drove up the coast for a snorkeling excursion out of Cabo Pulmo.||The meals were excellent and the accommodated several dietary issues such as 2 gluten free persons, 1 seafood allergy, and 1 person child who doesn't eat seafood. On our departure day, 9 of us had to leave early for flights (or driving people to flights) and they graciously made wonderful breakfast burritos for the drive.||Speaking of the meals, this past January we decided to try a different place on the East Cape about 7 miles south of VDF. It was fine, but we found that we missed VDF and ended up driving there for dinner one night.||During this trip we wanted to have a small birthday celebration while there and while 10 of us were off snorkeling in Cabo Pulmo, they worked with the 1 remaining person to set it up, hang the pinata's, set up dinner in a special area, etc. They even made 4 kinds of birthday cake (2 gluten free and 2 regular.||As my first first stated, the roads are not for everyone - but they are passable. And the road in from the airport gets graded in mid Oct. For this trip, the road from the south along the coast had not been smoothed out yet since storm season, so we took the route from SJD. It was pretty smooth for the first 2/3rds and quite interesting for the final 1/3. When we left on Sat, they had clearly progressed a little further. We normally come in Dec/Jan, and our opinion is that the graded portions on this trip were the best and smoothest roads of all our trips, but the ungraded portions were some of the worst.||And as my original review also stated:|Paradise found ,,, hopefully not lost. |There has been some development along this stretch of coast, but it is still pretty remote and as beautiful as when we first found it for ourselves.||After 7 visits to the property I can whole hardheartedly say that we highly recommend coming here if you are looking for a wonderful stay in a remote location. ||BUT if you are looking for 24 hour room service, drinks on the beach, easy access from the airport, and all the typical tourist stuff, please stay down in the cabo corridor.

Updated for a visit in March 2025... wifi is improved! The road along the east cape was as bumpy as ever. Rooms, service, food and wine all remain excellent. When we come again, we'll try another room, the North Casita is amazing, but we should try another room. It is a meticulously maintained property that was obviously built with an eye to quality and honouring Mexican culture. The rooms are beautiful. We stayed in the North Casita with the outdoor shower - absolutely stunning. Family run with many long term staff. Other accommodations we had in the area were not nearly as well maintained - there's not a spec of dust anywhere. Kudos to the staff, chef, and maintenance crew. Drinks and meals are very reasonable. We hope to come back and wish we had stayed longer. My only ask for the future would be wifi access in more locations. I did not have cell service and there is only cell service in and around the bar. Adding a response to some comments about the $45 dinner... In our experience, this was nothing but optional and a three course meal (not $45 per plate) Excellent value and the wines available (especially the Mexican ones) were very reasonable and very good.

Yelp
We went just for dinner while staying in the area. We had Seared Tuna caught that day. It was awesome. They serve dinner in courses. We had guacamole, Caesar Salad, the main course and carrot cake for dessert. It was dark so we didn't see much of the place but it looks gorgeous and the owners and staff are very engaging. We must go back! This is a great place for an Anniversary dinner.

Yelp
I can't say enough good things about this hotel. The rooms/cottages are spacious and very well appointed. A terrific Breakfast is included; dinner is optional. The food was so amazing we stayed for dinner every night. The menu was varied and delicious (no choices, except when it was a buffet). The staff couldn't be more helpful. If the location wasn't so remote (see Jeff's review), rates would be four to five hundred a night. We paid about half of that. The four days, three nights just flew by. We could walk to the swimming beach (best at high tide) and drove up the coast to Cabo Pulmo National Park (meh). Hated to leave. The caution: the family owners are selling the hotel (about $6 million, if you're interested).

Yelp
This is the most beautiful hotel we have been too. Every room / terrace / relax area has a lot of taste, everything is in the details. We booked the cheapest room (Bali Room) and I think it's the best one: breathing the fresh air of the ocean when sleeping is a blast, the views are to die for and that open shower is a great experience. The pool is marvelous (my husband said it's even better than the pools you see in drug cartels movies ;)) and its view is breathtaking. The breakfast is absolutely wonderful and very filling. The diners ($45) were a bit pricey but very good (also, when you realize how secluded that place is and how far you need to go to do groceries, you understand the price). The fish they served us was so fresh (caught in the morning) that it was worth all the pennies. You should also try their margaritas, they are the best one you will EVER have ($12). To finish, the "family" over there is absolutely wonderful. Marylin, Mary, Allie and Jeff are SO nice and are doing everything they can to make your stay absolutely perfect. There are a lot of things you activities you can do there: free kayaks, snorkel gears, SUPs ... WALKING ON THE BEACH FOR COUNTLESS HOURS. Cabo Pulmo is 40mn away and awesome divings over there (saw two bullsharks and thousands and thousands of fishes). My advice: rent a SUV or 4x4 to get there as there is about 1hr of dirt road from SJC airport to the Villa. Also withdraw money as not a lot of places around accept credit card.
