"Villas Ephrussi de Rothschild and Kerylos The exclusive town of St-Jean-Cap-Ferrat is home to the Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild, a Renaissance-style palace with sumptuous furnishings and one of the most famous gardens in France. Beginning with a traditional French garden, the land is by turns tamed into a Japanese garden, a stone garden, and six other distinctive environments. Directly across the bay, the Villa Kerylos was built in the 20th century as a replica of an ancient Greek palace."

The gardens are magnificent. While I am not a man to style bushes and plants, I enjoyed seeing the work of others. Beatrice had an amazing life and I loved seeing her home. While the gardens are spectacular, there is a lot of deferred maintenance on the house which made me very pleased that I did not have to care for it. The Riviera is a special place and Villa de Rothschild is a beautiful glimpse into the past. The location is spectacular. We visited in January during the off season and had most of the house to ourselves. You should be ready to do some walking up and down uneven pathways if you want to see all of the gardens. The Villa is near a bus stop so you can save some Euros to put toward lunch.

It's location for a luxury villa cannot be battered. You have stunning views of two bays from this elevated position a hundred or so feet above the sea. The villa is beautifully built and well maintained with interesting gardens which are beautiful with huge numbers of plants, water features and colourful flowers. Even though the villa was only built in 1912 it feels due to the workmanship, especially the masonry carvings that it was built a hundred or so years earlier. It's not a particularly large residence (unlike Waddesdon Manor in England). This I understand was their 'winter residence' which I could quite happily live in! The sun is out, not a cloud in the sky, no breeze. It is truly a magical place

A work of art seaside villa located at Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat on the French Riviera. Designed by the French architect Aaron Messiah, it was built between 1907 and 1912 by Baroness Béatrice de Rothschild. It is surrounded by nine gardens, each on a different theme: French, Spanish, Japanese, Florentine, Provençal, exotic, a stone garden, a rose garden and a garden of Sèvres. I had the pleasure to visit it on a sunny day in January and really loved both the indoor and the outdoor, probably a top 3 in my Cote d'Azur and Provence visit. Highly suggested.

Wow this villa and gardens are amazing! We visited midweek on a beautiful days, the views were amazing, the gardens looked great even though it was the end of Nov when we went. The villa is beautiful inside, very Great Gatsby!! The only downside was the two women in the gift shop - we wanted to buy a print to take home so asked for some cardboard or similar to prevent it from getting tatty and bent - they were really unhelpful and just said no and then carried on chatting together! So avoid the gift shop and spend all your time in the villa and gardens, they’re amazing!

This was the highlight of our entire trip, take a short bus ride from Beaulieu Sur Mer, it's worth loading Lignes Dazur as this can be used on both bus and trams in the area. Entry is up hill so I recommend comfortable shoes and clothing as there is quite a lot of walking to appreciate the villa and garden in full. Entry fee is 13 Euros per adult which is very reasonable considering there is no time limit and you can stroll round and appreciate the beautiful interior and exterior. They offer a guide device in several different languages, they do require a identification for these to be provided but it is very informative and provides detailed guides throughout each area which is numbered to ensure you are able to take in the history. Upstairs there is a short film about Béatrice Ephrussi de Rothschild. The gardens are beautiful, each have different themes and a wide range of unique plants, flowers, statues and photo perfect views.

Great place to visit! Definitely a must to pass by if you have a trip nearby in Nice or in Monaco. We needed about 3 hours to see the villa and the gardens. The free audio guide was very nice!

Google
Absolutely magical! It’s every bit as beautiful as on pictures or even better. Wonderful place for a little morning-afternoon stroll - breathtaking views, beautiful gardens, tons of history and culture all in one place. We also visited the restaurant they have their and the food was also lovely (though nothing spectacular taste-wise).

Yelp
Outstanding views and gardens from this opulent villa. The views of the sea were to die for while the grounds and inside were equally impressive. Wish I had done my homework as the Villa has an on premise restaurant. Manageable walk from the Beaulieu-sur-Mer train station taking the scenic coastal route in which you will be greatly rewarded with numerous photo opportunities. Of all the places I visited on my trip (Nice, Cannes, Eze, Antibes, Monaco) this was the most picturesque.

Yelp
Forgot that I hadn't written a review! Visited last year and really enjoyed a relaxing afternoon, wandering the house and the grounds. It's a gorgeous estate built as a winter house for Béatrice de Rothschild (yes of the famously wealthy Rothschild family*) between 1907-1912, that is currently managed by the Academie des Beaux Arts, having been bequeathed this estate in 1933 by the owner prior to her passing. As a significant collector and appreciator of art, the property houses a varied array of art forms from different eras, that Béatrice acquired over her lifetime. The gardens are also cultivated with several distinct themes. Located on Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat, the villa smack dab (~10 km away) from both Nice and Monaco. The closest train station is Beaulieu-sur-Mer from where you can take bus #15 directly to the outer driveway entrance, about 5-6 minute walk slightly uphill to the ticketing entrance and gift shop. Arriving by car there is free parking available in a lot. The views from the villa's elevated position on a hill overlooks the Bay of Villefranche and the Bay of Beaulieu. A tremendous number of mansions (owned by the ultra wealthy and celebrities) also dot the landscape. Walking up to the entrance, tickets can be purchased inside or prior online. Regular adult tickets are €18, €12 reduced, free for children 7 and under. A combined ticket along with Villa Kérylos is available for purchase on-site only for €24. It's possible to visit both in one day with time to spare, as they're only about 10 minutes driving from each other. Inside, on the left hand side of the lobby free audio guides are available, there is also a free activity book for younger children. The tour takes you around the first floor first, then around the second floor, providing information on Béatrice's life and times, explaining the history of the villa and the highlights of the collection in each room. The total tour takes about 45 minutes. The rooms are gorgeous period rooms with an eclectic variety of decorative furnishings, sculptures and paintings. The grand scale of the main lobby and bath room impressed me. After this I'd recommend taking a stroll in the gardens, where you can enjoy the musical fountains and varied landscapes of each themed garden - French, Spanish, Florentine, stone, Japanese, exotic, rose and Provençal. If you're into the outdoors, horticulture or simply looking for a beautiful place to relax, you could spend hours here. I only spent about 45 minutes in the gardens and felt there was so much more to see. There are miles of walking paths. Mostly not handicap accessible though parts are. There's a tea-room restaurant that's set up in what appears used to be the formal dining room. It's open for lunch and dinner with a break between. For more info see villa-ephrussi.com/en/ *currently still one of the world's wealthiest families with fortunes derived from banking, they are a Jewish family with origins tracing back to Frankfurt, Germany.

Yelp
This Villa and it's gardens are a true marvel. Each room has a spectacular view. The gardens and surrounding plants are incredible. The audio provides a fascinating insight into the life and history of Béatrice Ephrussi and the construction/ creation of the gardens. A worth while visit.

Yelp
If you like beautiful things. then head to the Rothschild estate to see how a woman who was worth over 700 million euros lived! Beatrice Rothschild built her pink mansion between 1905 and 1912. And then she filled it with the masterpieces of the world! Antique furniture, porcelain, art, tapestries, and more adorn the walls of this villa that overlooks the Mediterranean Sea. And the gardens are even more lovely- 9 in all - they are all themed differently from a Japanese garden to a rose garden, a stone garden and a more formal French garden. The gardens surround the house and as you look off the back porch of the house you see the fountains actually move to the music that is playing in the garden. The story has it that she was a bit eccentric and loved the sea and sailing so much that she dressed her gardeners in the blue and white stripes of sailors as she wanted to think that she was on a huge ship given the views of the sea that surround her estate. I was very surprised at the quality of the artwork and furnishings that were in this house and basically unprotected from the elements. They are museum pieces that should be in a more controlled environment so that future generations can enjoy them but they are not. And while I liked the fact that as you move through the house with its windows and doors open to the outside- I could only wonder what damage the sea air is doing to these pieces? You can see that the villa needs some work as it is deteriorating in some places as well, with pieces of crown molding crumbling as well as some of the ceiling paintings damaged by water damage. The villa was donated to the arts council in 1934 so I feel like they should know what they are doing but it was a bit of a concern to me. There is a lovely restaurant in the garden where you can get a variety of very good salads for lunch along with cakes and coffee. While not cheap (we paid 60e for two) it is lovely to sit in the garden on a sunny day, listening to the music and hearing the water spray as you enjoy your meal on the courtyard. And they also carry the Rothschild wine which you can get in the glass or by the bottle. The views are exquisite. The artwork stunning. Definitely worth a visit as a day trip from Nice. And the bus will drop you right off in front and from there it's a short walk up the hill.

Yelp
Worth the trip out of Nice-Ville if only just for the gardens. Just be warned that like most places in southern France, there is almost no air conditioning.

Yelp
Absolutely amazing mansion by an amazing woman. Beautiful house with well preserved and documented interiors. Beautiful gardens with dancing fountains - I especially loved the Japanese garden. Loved seeing her dresses and pictures of her travels laid out. Feels more like a home than a museum. Also a great cafeteria with a beautiful view of the bay. Download the app before you go. There is free internet on site but it is slowish.

Yelp
Possibly the most beautiful gardens along the Riviera, the highlight of which is a gloriously extravagant, outrageously camp Son et Eau - every 20 minutes, all the fountains in the central garden are choreographed to music (Handel, various arias, etc.). The restaurant is super; salads at around 15 euros include the obligatory chevre, with tapenade, mesclun and parma ham, or a mixed seafood salad with taramasalata and a dill potato salad. Wine hails from the Rothschild vineyards; a decent rosé or white, with champagne at 8/50 by the glass or bottle. Exquisite views across the coast to Villefranche, Beulieu and Eze. Not, not, not to be missed!
