4 Best Day Trips from Rome

"This picturesque park maintained by F.A.I. (Fondo Ambiente Italiano) offers a manicured version of wild nature that drew artists and writers away from the sights of Rome in the 19th century. It's definitely a feast for the eyes but is a decent workout too, with a trail leading you past a waterfall (don't miss!), caves, grottos, and up and down lots of stairs. FAI recommends one-and-a-half to two hours to do the full loop around the park." - Laura Itzkowitz, Arlene Gibbs

Villa Gregoriana is a symphony of nature and history, where waterfalls cascade like liquid silver through a verdant canyon. Every path winds through lush greenery, moss-covered rocks, and ancient ruins, whispering tales of Rome’s past. The roar of the waterfalls mingles with the songs of birds, creating a melody that feels both wild and sacred. Sunlight filters through the trees, illuminating hidden corners and ancient stone bridges, inviting the visitor to pause, breathe, and wander. Here, the power of nature and the touch of history merge, leaving a sense of awe that lingers long after the last step.

Absolutely beautiful site in Tivoli with serene waterfalls and caves to explore. Highly recommend coming here. It is quite a lot of walking and in the summer heat it was intense but nonetheless an amazing experience.

Not your typical “villa”. More of a natural park and hike with lots of history and beautiful scenery. Highly recommend if you don’t mind a hike down and up across the canyon. There are also several trail spurs off the main trail to overlooks and grottos that I wouldn’t pass up. If you can come prepared with an audio guide downloaded you’ll get more out of the visit. The ticket office offers a free audio guide but it won’t work without service (you won’t have service) and I don’t believe it was downloadable as it was just a link to a website.

Villa Gregoriana is a stunning natural park with beautiful waterfalls, lush greenery, and breathtaking countryside views. I recommend wearing comfortable clothes and shoes suitable for trekking, as the paths involve some effort with descents and climbs. The experience is absolutely rewarding, though the entrance fee is a bit on the pricey side.

Really beautiful place. We have been twice with our 4 kids. There are lots of stairs and steep paths but there are also many nice places to stop and rest. It is also cool and pleasant on warm days because of all the shade trees.

Fantastic place! But one has to be ready go up and down and it's take some physical efforts. But it's such rewarding with nature, caves, waterfalls, trees, etc. Highly recommended.

Beautiful, natural park surrounding the Aniene waterfalls. Few tourists, many locals. Great, cool retreat on a hot day!

It's not as popular as Vila d'este, but it's definitely better from my pov. The walk gives you different different views of the waterfall. I would say it is a moderate walk, going up and down the cliff so pack your walking boots or trainers and a bottle of water.

Yelp
We came here as part of a day trip from Rome, and we're so glad that we did. The nature is unlike anything you will find close to the city center. I highly recommend walking down to the bottom of the main waterfall if you are able- there are caverns you can explore, and it is surreal to stand so close to such a big waterfall. However, this hike could be difficult, especially if the weather is extremely hot. Be aware of your limitations, though we were all perfectly fine climbing up/down throughout the park.
