Hamish Bowles Tours the Best of the Côte d'Azur's Historical Homes | Vogue

"One of my favorite places on the planet, this scrupulous recreation of an Ancient Greek villa—built for Theodore Reinach and completed in 1908—realizes Emmanuel Pontremoli’s breathtaking gesamtkunstwerk vision. Miraculously set on the tip of a promontory in the Baie des Fourmis at Beaulieu sur Mer, its gardens are lapped by water on three sides, and the views—rocky cliff faces to one side, a charming 18th‑century seafront and grand villas to the other—feel much as Reinach would have seen a century ago in a town that remains remarkably unspoilt. Every detail is considered, from frescoes, textiles, marquetry, mosaic, metal, and marble work to the high day-beds in the dining room, set at the same height as the table so that the Pontremoli family and guests could eat in the ancient Greek manner. It’s easy to see how this aesthetic has profoundly influenced decorators like Jacques Grange and Stephen Sills. Declared a historic national monument in 1967, it is exquisitely preserved as a testament to the immense culture, knowledge, and taste of its patron and designer." - Hamish Bowles

Located in Beaulieu-sur-Mer, this villa is one of the most incredible monuments on the French Riviera ! It bears witness to one man's passion for the Hellenistic period. It is a unique reconstruction of an ancient Greek residence, boasting all the luxury inherent to its beauty. The site is a true invitation to travel, with extraordinary decor and furnishings in marble, bronze, and ivory that adorn the salons and gardens. Commissioned in 1902, it is the brainchild of Théodore Reinach, archaeologist, patron of the arts, specialist in ancient Greece, and member of the "Académie des Inscriptions et Belles-Lettres". Driven by his passion, he commissioned his friend, the architect Emmanuel Pontremoli, a member of the Academy of Fine Arts, to design a villa modeled after those of 2nd and 1st century BC Greece. Both great admirers of ancient Greece, they collaborated, culminating in 1908 in the reconstruction of a house inspired by the noble residences of the island of Delos in the 2nd century BC, a Cycladic island whose architecture is renowned for its use of curved structures such as arches and vaults, adapted for the early 20th century! But Villa Kérylos is not a reproduction; it is a true reinvention. Organized around the traditional peristyle, the villa is constructed using the finest materials: antique stucco, Carrara and Siena marble, and exotic woods for the furnishings. The decoration is sumptuous: mosaics and frescoes are directly inspired by ancient documents, and scenes from famous painted vases adorn the walls, illustrating the great legends of classical gods and heroes. Emmanuel Pontremoli skillfully furnished the Villa with the modern comforts of the Belle Époque: the pool is supplied with water by taps concealed beneath round grilles, windows embellish the facades and bring natural light inside, while mirrors and bidets are hidden within the bathroom decor. Upon his death in 1928, Théodore Reinach bequeathed the Villa to the Institut de France. Then, a year later, the Théodore Reinach Foundation was established.

I was absolutely amazed by this villa — I didn’t even have enough time to take everything in. There’s so much to see, every detail catches your eye. Everything is done with such taste, and it’s a timeless design — you could easily live in these interiors even today. I truly enjoyed my visit.

Amazing experience! The visitor is submerged into a fantasy of living like a Greek god, but with contemporary to the 20th century comforts. Allover very fine and stylish neogreek interior is decorated with the real museum collection of antiques. The views from every window are very picturesque and poetic. Beautiful heritage of a famous archaeologist Theodore Reinach is now accessible for any curious and enthusiastic visitor.

Google
A very interesting place modelled after ancient Greeks lifestyle and aesthetics but created in the beginning of 20th century, it feels like you're stepping into a world of what these places would've looked like back in the day even though it is a modernized take

As someone who already visited Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild, I wasn't blown away. It is beautiful, however, I don't think I would come again. The price is maybe too high.

Yelp
Lovely to explore on a sunny day! For fans of unique architecture, furniture and decor this place is a treat. Walking into the entryway I immediately felt like I'd stepped into an issue of Architectural Digest. All the rooms in the villa were gorgeous! From the Roman bath right at the entrance to the open courtyard, library, dining room and main reception room, the Greek Revival style which reminded me of a mix between Art Deco and Art Nouveau in terms of style lines, but with strong Greek elements. The first and second floors are open to the public, and a free audio guide in language of choice comes included in the ticket price. If you listen to all the details in the guide it takes about 45 minutes to walk thru the house. Add on 15-20 minutes enjoying the view and about 15 minutes in the ground floor exhibit and you can easily spend 1.5 hours here. There is an exhibition in the basement/ground level of the Roman ruins in the area, with placards showing their chronological history and diagrams and sketched recreations. They went into a lot of detail though unfortunately for non-French readers these were only in French. Helpful to have a live photo translation app though my cell service underneath stone walls and right beside the sea edge was quite spotty. At €13 a ticket which is prob a bit steep for local activities tho there is a combination ticket for Villa Kerylos and Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild over a few days that's €22. A decent deal considering separate tickets are €30 total. The ticket office associate was friendly and helpful. Take the train from towns along the coast to Beaulieu-sur-Mer then walk 10 minutes, or local buses 607 or 15 which also stop close by to the villa entrance. The town itself is nice to walk around a bit and enjoy the harbor area.

Yelp
As a classics student I found Kerylos fullfilled so many fantasies of revisiting the lavish homes of senators and orators who I have read about so often. As if time had leapt back 2000 years... The mosaics and atrium are stunning, and the villa in its entirity is only complimented by the beautiful location on the french coast. I can't wait to go back!
