We just got back from 5 nights at the hotel. It's an interesting series of contrasts. The setting is perfect if you want to be close but not too close to the city. The building itself is lovely. One could imagine living there, and it being grand. The food is absolutely terrific, particularly for dinner. First rate. But the hotel falls short of being all that it could. The service is a bit out of sorts. The front desk isn't run like a world class hotel. Staff people don't greet you in a welcoming way, and aren't trained properly in terms of understanding what people expect service wise when paying $1000 a night for two rooms. Around the pool, you are really left to your own in terms of getting towels or a drink. It's loosely managed, as if the cat's away. That said, all the food service people were absolutely a delight. Within the rooms, the sore spots were the pillows, like lightly stuffed cardboard, and in both rooms there was a strong oder, let's just say not belonging. Overall, it was a frustrating experience. The property has SO much potential, yet fell short on many details a well travelled person would expect at the higher end of the market. Would we stay again, I'd say we would look at other options that offer the same opportunity to be close but not too close to a very special city. With more management oversight, and a deep assessment of service, this place could otherwise be the place to stay.
