This Lake Como Boutique Hotel Offers a Fresh Take on Traditional Italian Luxury

"On a solo trip I first discovered the 18-suite boutique property Villa Lario; it strikes the perfect balance between luxury and livability — a true home away from home, but in an elevated, aspirational way." - Samantha Lauriello Samantha Lauriello Samantha Lauriello is a New York City-based writer and editor, and the host of Travel + Leisure’s TikTok channel. Villa Làrio Hotel Review | Hotels Above Par

"Set on two acres between the lake and vertiginous cliffs in the bijou village of Pognana Lario, this five‑star hotel is a masterclass in seamlessly blending old and old and new. Villa Làrio comprises three independent villas — Il Palazzo, a 19th‑century neo‑Classical building; Villa Bianca, a new‑build decorated in Scandi‑Italian style; and a two‑bedroom exclusive‑use Pavilion — plus a standalone garden suite, all scattered across landscaped gardens and linked by a lift carved into the rockface that runs from Villa Bianca down to Il Palazzo and its private pontoon. I appreciated how every design choice keeps the lake as the sole focal point: there are no televisions in any of the 18 rooms, the few artworks sit on picture rails installed below eye level, many walls are white (and some removed entirely) to make room for dramatic floor‑to‑ceiling windows — notably the Il Palazzo Tower Suite’s greenhouse‑style living room whose glass panels can be peeled back to feel like a terrace. Facilities include an infinity pool, a small gym, watersports on request and yoga classes under the hotel’s stately cedar trees (included in the room rate); in summer you can dive straight into the lake, while in autumn staff recommend hiking part or all of the 18‑mile Dorsale del Triangolo Lariano. Dining is straightforward and excellent: Villa Bianca restaurant serves rich but unfussy Lombardy cuisine (and yes, it’s all about the pasta), the lake‑level bar specialises in delectable finger food and cocktails, or you can request a picnic basket to enjoy on a private boat tour. Facing west, the property’s many vantage points make it worth returning for spectacular sunsets; nearby you can also encounter brave swimmers leaping from the ancient Ponte della Civera. Room count: 18; starting rate from 520 USD per night; closest airport: Milan Malpensa (MXP)." - Rosie Paterson

Villa Làrio Lake Como (Pognana Lario, Lake Como) 1 Verified Reviews | Tablet Hotels

"It’s Lago di Como to you — and to George Clooney, and Sir Richard Branson, and all the other rich and famous foreigners who own vacation villas here — but for the wealthy aristocrats who retreated to the shores of the glacial lake in Roman times, it was “Lario.” A lavish new all-suites hotel, Villa Làrio, takes inspiration from the original Latin name, and from the region’s long history as an elegant getaway for city-dwellers, and anyone else who can afford it." - Tablet Hotels

What a great, great, great experience. The property is amazing with everything one could imagine Lake Como experience to be like. Sitting on the water, opening our windows every morning to see the lake and hear the water lapping up to the rocks was so calming and almost spiritual. Everyone of the staff was amazing - from Alesandro in the restaurant to Jefferson the bellman, the service and attention was top notch.|The front staff (Thalia, Martina, Godwin, and Allessandra) were just fantastic. Everything from boat tours, dinner reservations, finding an ATM, ferry schedules, you name it, they worked hard at making our stay the best possible. Even with the bad rain storm and landslides which limited our transportation to public ferry, they helped us manage to get around, get to Como for a rental car so we could continue on our vacation. They were even nice enough to carry our luggage from the hotel to the ferry dock. I am sure we are missing some of the staff by name, but they were all excellent!||We cannot wait to go back and take in everything Villa Lario has to offer as our gateway to Lake Como.

My husband and I just stayed here for our honeymoon and we absolutely loved it! The service was fantastic (we asked for a couple more bottles of water and within 2 mins we had 6 bottles of water delivered to our room) and the staff were so kind! They did an outstanding job making sure we were taken care of and felt at home. It was also one of the most stunning places we have ever stayed and you can tell it is kept up very well. We had a hard time leaving and will definitely be back!

I am so upset that I have to write this- but it would be wrong if I didn't. ||I must preface my remarks by saying that the front office staff were extremely polite, professional, and real nice people. That being said......||I have certain dietary restrictions that require me to bring outside food to the property. Nothing new- been doing it for decades. The hotels have always accommodated- helping with the storage and arranging through room service to heat it. Never a problem. Ever. Always arranged in advance- no surprises. If a fee were involved, I would always be happy to pay.||And then-welcome to 2025, at this property. Arrangements were made. The staff was very cooperative in the arrangements. They had done it before for people with allergies or certain food restrictions. All good. I had my food delivered from Milan- I spent well over $700 for 3 nights' worth of dinners.||Then I get a call from someone - not sure who - that they will not do it for me. They are too busy in the restaurant to heat it. I told them that all was prepackaged- no need to do anything other than throw it in the oven-as was discussedd before I came -that's it. No plating- nothing- just heat it and send it to my room as is. I will wait until they are not busy - and if need be, I will eat dinner at 4 pm. ||NO- they will not do it. Even though I was told differently. Even though they do it for people with other dietary issues. But in my case -no. Why? Perhaps because it was Kosher food? Just guessing. Not sure why that should make a difference. As I said, all was double wrapped- ready to be heated up. So why would Kosher be different than other dietary issues? Hmmm- dare I say? No way- can't be.||Yup- I guess Kosher = _________.||SHAME ON YOU.

We have been coming to Villa Lario now for 5 years, always for our special occasion. This year, it was clear that we would go to Villa Lario for our honeymoon and it did not disappoint. We booked the tower suite, absolutely loved the room and the views. It’s a great place to recharge, we always meet other interesting guests and enjoy coming here to unwind and relax. We can’t wait to be back again next year!

My partner and I stayed at this beautiful hotel at the end of July and we had the most amazing experience. Everything about this hotel is so picturesque, we stayed in the corner suite which had many windows overlooking the beautiful lake aswell as a balcony. Staff were very lovely and helpful, food and drinks were amazing. It was truly the best stay, would highly recommend

Visited from a Friday to Monday in June. Elegant and luxurious location, attentive staff and an exceptional restaurant. We had a spacious lakefront room with terrace and fully air conditioned which was great as it was quite hot during our visit. Hired a driver from Milan airport as we didn’t want to manage driving and parking over the weekend. Toured the lake and visited Bellagio and Como by boat. Will definitely return and would highly recommend.

I recently stayed at this hotel for two nights. During the process of moving my luggage, my tablet PC was completely destroyed—it no longer turns on—and a cherished bottle of wine, which was a gift from a close friend, was broken. As a result, my clothes and bag were also damaged. However, I have yet to receive any response or offer of compensation from the hotel. The hotel is composed of multiple buildings connected by elevators, making luggage transport quite difficult. Despite this, only one staff member was assigned to handle all of my belongings—unacceptable for a long-term traveler carrying multiple bags. This likely increases the risk of damage, and yet the hotel seems completely indifferent to such incidents. In addition, compared to other hotels in the same price range, this hotel appears to be severely understaffed. At the restaurant, it took an unreasonably long time just to place an order, and the staff were clearly overwhelmed throughout the entire mealtime, making it impossible to enjoy a relaxed dining experience. To make matters worse, when we ordered the same pasta dish we had enjoyed the night before, it arrived tasting completely different—so much so that all four of us at the table were genuinely shocked.

Really cute hotel with great views and great food. The design was amazing and I loved how they made it look beautiful while also preserving the history. Fun to be close to the water as well!
