A Charming but Overpriced Stay at the Gates of Lucca
This bed and breakfast, set in a charming old mansion right at one of the entrances to the walled town of Lucca, makes a strong first impression. The location is excellent — just steps from the historic center, offering easy access to everything the town has to offer. The common areas are tastefully eclectic, full of personality and character. A particularly nice touch is the permanent buffet available throughout the day, with fruit and cakes on hand for guests to enjoy at any time. The staff were also very friendly and helpful, adding to the overall warm and welcoming atmosphere.
However, for the price, the stay didn’t quite live up to expectations. While the room continued the eclectic aesthetic, the quality wasn’t consistent — especially in the bathroom, where fixtures and finishes felt tired and low-grade. The bed was quite uncomfortable due to a very soft mattress that lacked support. Soundproofing was also a significant issue: we could clearly hear other guests moving about and talking, as well as traffic from the street outside, which made restful sleep difficult. The old shutters hadn’t been properly restored and didn’t close fully, allowing in a lot of light both at night and in the early morning. Additionally, our room was on the first floor with no lift access, making it inconvenient for carrying luggage — something to be aware of, particularly for those with mobility challenges.
Overall, while the location and charm are undeniable, the comfort and quality of the rooms — especially given the price — leave room for improvement.
