"Private Tastings in the Piedmont Countryside Winemaker Renato Ratti recently opened to the public his family’s 18th-century, 13-room villa in the Piedmont countryside. An old cellar stores decades’ worth of Ratti wines. Guided tastings can be arranged upon request, and bottles can be shipped home for guests. The owners may open a restaurant in the next two years. For now, they direct guests to La Luna nel Pozzo, in the nearby village of Neive. The tiny family-run spot serves excellent homemade pastas paired with local wines. The villa’s old tower has been turned into a three-floor deluxe suite with hardwood floors, frescoed walls, and a Turkish bath. Each floor has 360-degree vineyard views. From $185. 39/0140-962-021. This appeared in the March/April 2013 issue."

Villa Pattono Relais & Spa, a Design Boutique Hotel Costigliole d'Asti, Italy

"Boasting a swimming pool with views of the vineyards and a spa, Relais Villa Pattono is set in the Piedmont countryside in Costigliole d'Asti. It features a hot tub, a furnished garden and a terrace. Wi-Fi is free throughout. Having been recently renovated, the rooms offer elegant modern furnishings with either a balcony or a terrace overlooking the surrounding hills. They include a flat-screen TV with satellite channels and air conditioning. At the Relais a sweet and savory buffet breakfast is prepared every morning on the ground floor. It includes hot and cold drinks, local cold cuts and cheeses. The property can also arrange helicopter tours, leaving from the adjacent helicopter pad. A bar is open daily from 10:00 until 20:00, and it is also possible to buy locally produced wine from the property's cellar. It is easier to reach Villa Pattono by car and Asti is only 9.3 mi away. We stayed as a family in 2017 and returned this summer. Just as lovely now as it was the first time. Both times we stayed in 'The Loft' which is a perfect size for us and our 3 kids (although it no longer offers self-catering facilities which was a bit plus last time). The hotel is spotless throughout and every staff member is friendly, courteous, and can't do enough to help. We didn't use the spa facilities, but the swimming pool is big and perfect for a relaxing afternoon. We only ate breakfast in the hotel on the days we stayed, but the food was really excellent and presented beautifully. I can't fault the hotel and will hopefully visit for a third time at some point in the future!

We had a fantastic stay. We had a suite on the ground floor. It had two separate rooms, which was great with kids. There was also a private shaded sun terrace. Bed was comfy, bathroom very well appointed. Staff were great. Spa was lovely, big sauna and steam room, and no one else using it. Pool was fab, warm enough for kids but never to many people. Restaurant was very nice, good tasting menu and a great setting.

I cannot say enough nice things about this hotel. Firstly, the property is beautiful and the rooms are also very nice (we had a Junior Suite), but it's the staff and the intimate nature of the property that really sets it apart. It has only 13 rooms, so the staff will get to know you by name and where you're staying. They'll do nice stuff for you like make up a salami/cheese plate when technically it was off hours. The breakfast is very high quality, and their restaurant on site is very good. I wish they had a a bit more variety on the menu but certainly we didn't go wrong with the Chef's menu and wine pairing. You can also book massages in advance and their spa with steam room/sauna is great. We actually attempted to change our travel plans to stay longer but couldn't. Would love to come back some day.

We spent a week in this splendid hotel and absolutely loved it. Our room was gorgeous with a very nice patio and great views. The staff to a person was excellent - friendly and accommodating at all times. When the weather cooperated, views of the Alps in the distance were amazing. The restaurant was quite good for dinner and breakfast. We did go to nearby Wine Story for dinner a couple of nights and loved it. The small spa was also quite nice and the masseuse was wonderful. Staying here was like staying in a very wealthy friend’s small country estate. We recommend it highly. And the location cannot be beat for touring around the Langhe region of Piedmont.

We spent one night at the hotel, the truth is that it should have been more. The area where the hotel is is beautiful, a lot of green around, vineyards, a lot of peace. It has a beautiful pool, with a beautiful view of the garden and sunset. The room is very nice, with many details, such as a welcome local wine. A balcony overlooking the garden. We only had one problem with booking, we requested twin beds but the hotel did not receive the request, so we had a double room (they kindly tried to change but it was full). We had dinner at the restaurant, the attention was EXCELLENT, and the food too. We asked for gluten free dishes due to an allergy, and it was somewhat limited. Incredible breakfast, they offered me several gluten free options. Prices good. Value for money it is okay. Recommendable!!! Beautiful place to relax, and enjoy nature, good wine and good food

When searching for a place to stay in Langhe, criteria was clear. We wanted to stay in a place surrounded by vineyards and we wanted a place with charm. Well, this estate can throw out charm in buckets as it is literally full of it :-) and vineyards are everywhere you look. We really enjoyed the stay as the room was awesome, the pool, the whole place is so magically charming. I especially appreciated excellent wine list and there was no problem to get a bottle with Riedel glasses to a pool. Very strongly recomended place!
