Village East by Angelika

Been here a few times and all experiences were great. They have snacks for sale, beer, wine etc. And the interior is so beautiful the space was built in 1926 and watching films in here is so special. I went to see sinners in 70MM and it did not disappoint sound system was insane and the steep balconies and seating are really cool.

DO NOT come to this movie theater! On Monday evening, we were sexually harassed by two white guys in this movie theater, one of them deliberately changed their seat to sit next to us, one of them tried to ask about our personal information, we ignored him, he didn’t take that as a sign of rejection and proceeded to make racially motivated sexual jokes repeatedly towards us at a loud volume to make sure we can hear him. They were ruining the movie for everyone else, these white guys kept talking amongst themselves across rolls, joking singing along and laughing throughout the entire movie even after being told to be quiet. We were angry and scared and made the report to the theater right after the movie ends. However no one in the theater was trying to do the minimal job they were supposed to, from the security, and manager Adrian, they did nothing but fed us bureaucracy bs ; even better his supervisor did not bother to see us or to talk to us and was conveniently home after hearing this matter from his subordinates. We were given his number but was told NOT to call since Adrian was scared to lose his job. The cops were no help either ofc. This goes to show how little this theater cared about their customers. Poorly-ran security system enabled this behavior since I’m not sure if the people harassed us bought the tix. There were little to no support for us afterwards, no type of compensation was offered. No effort/solution was made, these people got away with what they did and will probably continue to do so since the theatre’s non-doing allowed it. Putting all women in risky environment when they could’ve just relaxed and enjoyed the movie. DO NOT come here.

It is a great place to come to see a movie here. From the moment I walked in, the ushers were friendly and welcoming, which really set a positive tone. They actually have an on-site cafe, which is a cool touch for a cinema. Unfortunately I missed it, but it’s definitely on my list for my next visit. Overall, it is a comfortable spot to watch a film. I be b.a.c.h.

We watched Hamnet. It was good experience. Small theater. If you sit in the front, you will feel screen is too up above because the screen is quite small. Also you will feel you are not alone watching. There were many people crying during the movie but one person dramatically cried like a person who just went through tragedy. I felt so real while watching. The experience is there

I did not know there was two of this in the city! Went to this location for a film festival and it was a delight to experience local and indie movies. They do show blockbuster movies but mixed in with other genres. It’s a very well patronized theater and hope people consider membership so places like these don’t cease to exist.

The smaller theaters at this venue really suck. The lighting is all wrong and the screen is so small and some of the seats are so bad that you're totally blocked by the people in front of you. If you get lucky and you are at a bigger theater it's pretty good but you have to be willing to take that risk.

Cool historic theatre, but a bit high priced considering the heating was broken

Small theatre, small screen, small, hard cramped seats that probably date back to the 70s. I usually just wait until the movie goes to streaming, but sometimes you wanna go out and enjoy the traditional movie experience.This was awful and my back and knees are still screaming 2 days later from sitting in those awful seats. Next time, I’ll just stay home in the comfort of my living room, or go to a more comfy theater.

I absolutely love this movie theater--it's truly one of a kind! The ambiance is incredible, and it feels so elegant with its beautiful chandeliers and grand staircase. Walking in feels less like entering a movie theater and more like heading to a Broadway play. It's a stunning space that adds to the overall experience of a night out. One of the things I appreciate most about this theater is that I can almost always find the souvenir cups for the movies I love here. Other theaters tend to sell out of them quickly, but this one consistently has them in stock. This has become our go-to spot, especially when tickets to popular movies sell out too fast elsewhere. That said, my one critique is the seating. While the theater itself is beautiful, the seats are quite small and tightly spaced. Every time I or one of my kids sits down, it's a challenge to avoid knocking over our drinks because of how close everything is. A bit more space and larger seats would make the experience even better. Despite this, it's still our favorite theater and the one we keep coming back to!

I went to watch Nosferatu. The screen I went to was small. The seats and bathroom could've been cleaner.

Haven't been to Village East since 2019. Came by this past weekend to see NOSFERATU on Screen 6. It was a full house. All of the staff were very nice, but the facilities needed to be cleaned. The theater still had some garbage from a prior showing, and the trash bins in the lobby by the snack and beverage stand were overflowing. I still like the theater, and I hope they can work cleanliness in the future. The seats are soft and the sound quality was solid.

A wonderful old theatre that shows tons of interesting films. I saw "Thelma" there. It was fantastic. I reserved my ticket with fandango. My only ding is that all the restrooms are in the bottom of the basement. Going down three flights of stairs to get there when you already have to go is a very big problem.

This cinema has a long history in the community, having been built in the 1920s. The main theater is gorgeous with high ceilings, velvet carpets, and regal decor that harkens back to a previous era. The carpets definitely could've used a vacuum though. The concession line got long just after we ordered, but it seemed to move quickly. I enjoyed their popcorn, which was served nice and hot. They have a self-serve butter dispenser. We sat in the row right in front of the second level banister. You had to sit up tall and straight to see over the rail so if you are a bit shorter, I'd recommend sitting further back. There are bathrooms in the basement, two flights down from the main theater, so make sure to budget time to make the trip before your show. The showing had no ads or previews and the movie started immediately ten minutes after showtime, which was a nice change from the usual endless reels before a movie starts. Definitely worth a visit to enjoy modern movies in an old-time ambiance.

Great and beautiful theater with multiple screens. They show a lot of films that more "mainstream" theaters won't play so it has that in its favor. Tickets are a bit overpriced.

This theatre has been around for a very long time and plays many indie movies but it is now severely dated in its infrastructure to a point I rather wait for the movie to appear in a mainstream theatre or streaming platform than watch it here. They only have one temperature in any of the auditoriums which is scorching hot. The seating are very uncomfortable, and make squeeky noises too when you move the slightest. The screen sizes minus the main auditorium are joke along with the quality and sound too. C'mon Angelika do better than that! I am reminded every time I accidently end up here why I dislike it at this theatre.

If you thing is paying $30 for an independent film is bad enough, try the concession stand where you get a $12 beer running over the sides of the cup. So I ask if they can put it in a bigger cup, they said that would be a $6 inventory charge! We'll inventory this...I will never go back there.

This is definitely a quaint movie theater located close to the second avenue stop on the L train. We came here to watch a special showing of the phantom menace which was great! The thing I love about this theater is that they do showings like this often for anniversaries and special occasions. The facilities are old and the bathrooms need some fixing but overall a decent movie experience. Oh, also a large bottle of water here costs $7 so do with that information as you wish...

It's common knowledge that theaters gouge patrons on concessions. That's how they make their money. But there's a limit to what should be acceptable. I visited this theater for a showing of Oppenheimer in 70mm. Certainly a charming movie house (best way to describe it) and the main theater has the huge screen with a classic decor (see picture). What put me off was the fact that they ran out of $7 water bottles, but proceeded to charge the same price for a soda cup of tap water. Really bad form.

I have always loved going to movies since I was a kid. Back then, most theaters I went to were structures much like Village East: a nice marquee sticking out the front of a building, some nice architecture and an interior with stadium seating. Over time theaters have changed quite a bit, and modern theaters have a lot to offer, but sometimes you want something a bit more old fashioned. Village East by Angelika fits the bill perfectly. Compared to some other theaters like Regal on 14 Street, this theater is fairly small, though there is one large screen with stadium seating (but wow, those seats are small compared to other theaters). Other theaters downstairs have fewer seats but they are quite comfortable and clean. While the main and lower floors have concession stands, the one downstairs seems to only open up during bigger movie events. The staff is very nice and they work hard to keep the theaters clean. The rest rooms were also nicely maintained. Overall, I'd be happy to see a film here any time. Well worth a visit!

The theatre is very fancy looking, I would like to experience it for myself though as the screen does appear smaller than a regular movie theater experience

Theater 4 is a MAJOR fire hazard. The seating is incredibly tight and narrow both horizontally and vertically. People who entered the theater late couldn't find their seats because everything was poorly marked. When the late-comers would finally find their seat, the whole row would have to stand and squeeze the person in. Zero walking space or leg room. On top of that, everything was SO expensive. The staff were incredibly kind and efficient, I hope they're paid well

This is not the Angelika! Being natives my friend and I assumed it was the one in soho. We got there about 15 minutes before the movie was to start and were told that we needed to get up to this location. We barely made it. Other people also apparently made the same mistake so make sure you know at which "angelika" you belong. That said we came here for the Taylor swift concert movie event. The movie, as per tay Tay herself is supposed to be as close to the live show as you can get. THAT INCLUDES DANCING!!!!!! At least that's what happened at every concert I've ever been to no matter the performer. Not here at karen central though!!!! This was a sit down and watch the movie event. Yawn! Many people could not get to the show because the tickets were all consumed by scalpers who jacked up their prices to $ thousands. This movie was supposed to be the solution to the problem. I was lucky enough to get tickets to see her live. I assure you that everyone was out of their seats dancing hard. So if you're a swiftie and want the live experience, don't see the movie here. Further, the screen is tiny! The inflatable screen I have in my back yard is bigger. Acoustics are ok. Not great. There is nothing special about this theater. If you're going to see some small irrelevant or independent artsy film than this theater might be ok. Otherwise skip it. It's crossed off of my list (along with all the soccer moms who clearly didn't want to be there). Hopefully I have the energy to see the Taylor movie again at an imax. Sadly, we went to the first show opening night thinking it would be fun and special filled with swifties (as was every other theater). Such a sad mistake that we can't take back.

Got to see an anime movie for relatively low cost. My recommendation is if you know the movie isn't popular or packed, just buy the ticket at the kiosk and avoid the $2 booking fee online. It is a bit of hassle though because it is slow and janky. The theater itself is intimate and old. It was relatively clean, no major complaints or issues.

Don't go Boiling hot - No AC or AC doesn't work. Very Small screen - we were in Auditorium 5. Screen size was a joke. We went for Rocky aur Rani ki Prem Kahani on Aug 8. I wonder why is this theater even open/ felt like a torture chamber.

Used to love this theater but it's falling apart. Came for a movie at 8:30; the popcorn machine was off so all that was left was lukewarm from earlier, the soda machine was broken, and the employees had to be flagged down at entry and concessions to scan tickets/sell. Maybe understandable at the very end of the night but prime time? Not gonna choose this theater over other options anymore.

The staff was nice here but the facility needs some work, I went to the main theater and saw a mouse as I was getting to my seat and I watched the movie with my feet up the entire night because I was afraid the mouse was going to come back.

I love you Village East. I recognize your history as an older NYC movie theater that used to be part of the Yiddish Theater scene back in the day (WAY BACK IN THE DAY). I love your marquee. I love how I could go in to see Casablanca or Rocky Horror, take my pick. But you have to improve your heating. I went in on a cold day - but not super cold. I was colder in the downstairs theater than outside. Shivering in a jacket through a two hour film. Your snack combo prices are also outrageous ($24, girl what????) I am glad Angelika bought you so you can continue to be an important vintage theater for NY, but please, nobody likes vintage heating.

Glad to finally return to movies,and the brilliant visuals of French Dispatch benefited from a big screen. Vaccination is required and checked; unfortunately masks are merely recommended. Audio and screen quality seem better than the old days.

Awful experience. Went to a classic film viewing. The sound was so awful. I told a staff member, they put the volume up a little bit, but it was only coming from the front of the theater. Made the movie unwatchable. Tickets were over $20 dollars, so I reach out online and explain the issue in detail. No response. I reach out a second time. Still no response. Could have easily made up for their mistakes--I get it, technical issues. But thats not what I paid for. Awful customer service. They dont care about customer retention. Dont risk seeking classic film screenings here. Will stick to the FF.

Old opera house with all the latest movie releases. If you can watch from the main stage, the descriptor "stadium seating" does not do it justice. The viewing experience from the balcony is awesome. Painted ceilings and lots of history to go along.

We went for the first time for the TriBeCa Film Festival -- After last year's festival being entirely outside, it's so great to get back to watching films indoors again It's a beautiful old school-looking theater with velvety rugs, chandeliers, and crown molding decking the walls. It feels somewhere between stepping into a time machine and a movie set. Despite the old timey aesthetic, the theater was still equipped with decent projectors and sound systems Popcorn, candy, and soda selection were decent. No dining and no alcohol is served on the premises Seats, floors, and bathrooms were clean and tidy compared to some theaters in NYC The staff was friendly and accommodating Come for a unique cinematic experience in New York

Great theater that programs a lot of classic films. My only complaint is the self-serve ticket kiosk is trash. The software is giving mid 90's CD-ROM.

Eli single-handedly made the experience here a great one! He not only helped my friends to their seats after they arrived late but also fixed the sound for a live Metallica show being broadcasted. What a gem and I'll definitely be back!

Went to see Licorice Pizza in 70mm this past Friday night. The theater was beautiful, seats were comfortable (pictured is seat F2), and the film started 15 minutes after showtime (no trailers). The only downside is that they were only accepting card at concessions, which I completely understand because of COVID, but they did not accept any form of digital cards, i.e. Apple Pay, which I found a little strange. Not a big deal though because everything else was great. Would definitely head back.

Lovely place, love the atmosphere. It was clean. Theater 1 is the best. Would come again and recommend.

If you're looking to experience an old school no frills theater this is the place to go. It's a multiplex showing major features, and a mix of indie productions. Some rooms are normal sized, while some have smaller screens. The movie I viewed was in theater 4, and the screen looked like an oversized version of my flat screen TV at home. The picture was sharp though and the sound clean and crisp. Seating is ok and a bit cramped but not too bad. Overall clean. Just don't expect all the bells and whistles of the newer fancy theaters. Some funky 70's looking colored decor, carpets and public seating outside my theater. Terrific ceiling art with a vintage look you find in old Broadway playhouses. Plenty of indie flicks here too. All the previews I saw the other night I had never heard of, but some looked interesting. They accept Movie Pass card with no problem. Otherwise, it's $16 a flick.

I've been here only twice. Once for a Tribeca Film Festival screening of Guy Nattiv's "Skin" (I played a protester in it and it was my first professional acting gig!) and most recently for a SAG Awards Nomination Committee screening of " Being The Ricardos". This theater is beautiful and absolutely elegant inside. I felt like I was going to a a truly huge event. Because it was a red carpet event, a lot of people were dressed to impress. The staff was very helpful and accommodating. We had a great time. I'm looking forward to coming here again.

I called (like twice to make sure) and asked if this movie I wanted to watch was in the auditorium. I was told it was. Ended up it was in the small room downstair with a small projection and not so loud stereo system. I was very disappointed. I really wanted to watch the movie in the beautiful auditorium. It would be better to watch it on my phone with my favorite headsets.

I didn't realize theaters like this still existed in New York. The main theater, auditorium 1 (the only one you should bother going to at this location) is a must-see with its Art Deco features and chandelier. It's like going to the opera, minus all the fuss! It made Little Women in 35mm incredibly special. Other notes: - Liked the variation of popcorn containers sizes (no I don't need a Corporate Theater bucket that's 80% flavorless). - You should check Yelp photos for the seating in the auditorium, because there are some rows that are obstructed by a guardrail. I sat in row K and while there was a guardrail in front of us, we could see perfectly and had something to prop our feet on - yay!

I went here to see Oppenheimer in 70mm. I have never been here and was extremely disappointed. First off the theatre is dirty, the room I was in was hot. I don't think they have AC at all. So me and my friends were uncomfortable. The sound was bad, portions of the movie sounded muffled and I couldn't understand what was being said. The biggest complaint was the fact that you can see the person's head in front of you if you are seated behind someone. I walked out 15m into the movie. Such a terrible layout as well.

Avoid this theater - the AC does not work. Manager says that the AC " is working at only about 50%" but it was pretty warm in the theater....

Gorgeous old school movie theatre. From the outside I couldn't imagine how expansive it is inside. I've passed by this place hundreds of times but have never gone in. Finally had an opportunity to do so this week at the screening of a new Amazon film. The theatre is gorgeous with murals and decor that kinda brought me back to the old world (which I've only seen in film, I'm not THAT old lol). The seats were comfortable. Theatre looked clean and well maintained and the staff were friendly and helpful. Concession stand had lots of movie theater treats with pricing comparable to that if other NYC movie theaters.

I like the vibe of this place. Seen a couple of films here that you can't catch anywhere and haven't any problems before, during or after a screening. I do wish the restrooms were cleaner, but most of the time I have been here, the building is packed for a Film Festival, so on the regular the bathroom is probably immaculate. If you're looking for a break from the corporate vibe of an AMC, this is the place.

Old old old - no air conditioning and if it was on, could not feel it. Still, we like supporting any movie theater and it plays all the good indies which are the best.

When I walked in, I thought about how yelp isn't just about food, but it also gives you the chance to review other business, such as this, a movie theatre! How though? I thought about what is important in a theater and here goes: I give this theater a 3 because while there is a lot of wow, there are a few parts that are less than desirable as well. There is no security whatsoever. While I don't want to ruin it for those who manage to sneak in a whopper and a drink, in this climate, I don't consider this the wisest to not have any bag check, no security protocol. The theater itself, while it looks dated, it gives this old school feel that makes you want to share a sundae and sit in the car on the hillside. Really dope inside overall. The seating was also very classic broadway show like, but the sound quality can definitely be improved. Now why it gets 4 stars, is because they really showed out and represented for Americans that enjoy Anime. Saw the My Hero Academia movie and had an amazing time. I wish more cinemas would catch the wave, but for now this one has a place in my heart.

My son kept saying he wanted to see jack rabbit so I checked to see where it was still being played. This was the only theater in NYC still playing it. We arrived and the guy at the front told me he couldn't locate my tickets. I went back into my email and took a screenshot of the bar code. "Please step to the side while I allow other ppl in". Ok cool. Then after he tells me its because Im there too early and I have to wait. A few more ppl go in while we wait. 20 mins later we go back to him to try again because it was cold and we wanted to sit. supposedly it still wasnt coming up on his end. I decide to go to the ticket booth to see whats going on because I paid quite a bit of money so we def were going to see it. In less than 30 secs they print it out. We enter back in and the guy lets us in finally. No smile no apology no nothing. Now we go downstairs where our room was located and we see some of the very same ppl that walked in with us already waiting on the side to see the same movie. Oh so I thought we were too early but they weren't. Ok not cool. I wanted to walk out and say f this place but my son really wanted to watch the movie so fine we stayed. 2 stars for the movie alone. I absolutely will never return to this place.

Theater rooms were small. Was sad we couldn't get the bigger hall for a screening. We were split into two smaller rooms instead. Otherwise, seats were great- especially for a shortie like me :)

My favorite theater in NYC. See a movie in the Jaffe theatre - truly a special experience!

A great, home-grown kind of moviegoing experience in the East Village. A nice change of pace from the Regal/AMC routine. I adore their old-style marquee and their beautifully adorned main theater, which is HUGE. Some of the other theaters within the space can be a little small and tired-seeming, but the nature of the unique programming (they're often the only place in the city to be playing certain films) makes it all worth it. Their popcorn is delish, but if you don't leave satisfied then there are a TON of spots nearby to get your fix of almost any kind of cuisine you could desire. Also, be on the lookout for cool special events and festivals that happen here.

Super nice ppl working here, but DO NOT sit in row G in the 70mm theater if you are 5'4" or under. A handrail cuts right through the middle of the screen. Had to sit on the edge of my seat to see over it.

Came here on Wednesday to see the Slipknot documentary Day of the Gusano. I've never been to this theater before and I'm not sure if I'd come back. It doesn't have too many redeeming qualities. This theater is fairly old. Classic I should say? Pretty run down in some spots so it lacks that charm that a classic movie theater should have. I bought my ticket online and printed it out at home. When you get there they scan that ticket and give you a tiny one in replace. What I kinda like about this place is that they don't search your bags! You can sneak snacks in if you feel brave enough! The ticket was $16 and change. Not surprising for being in Manhattan. Can't vouch for the concession stand since I didn't buy any food or drink. The movie I was seeing was in theater 2 which is downstairs. Pretty small theater. The screen looked super small as well. That is until the movie started and the screen expanded. The seats were kinda crummy. I don't like the fabric seats. That's a big attraction for bed bugs! I know they can hide in leather seats as well, but they are more difficult to find in fabric. Both the sound and picture quality was pretty good. Can't complain about either. Bathrooms were nice and clean. I appreciate that. The 1st Avenue stop on the L train is a few blocks away so it only took me 30 minutes to get home which was nice. Would I come here again? Maybe. Usually, films with limited runs play here that don't play in many other theaters so I'd come back. Wouldn't go out of my way, though.

I was pleasantly surprised by how expansive and nice this theater is when I went for the first time recently. It's not the cheapest, but I believe the prices (for both tickets and concessions) are probably close to those of a typical chain cinema, however you're going to have a classic, comfortable experience here. Village East Cinema is a wonderful East Village establishment, and I look forward to visiting more often in the future!

The theatre itself is fine. I came to see Apollo 11 on 4/21 and arrived around 3:15pm. Two gentlemen working the front were laughing together and when approached to take my ticket, one said to the other, "speaking of...". I inquired and they confirmed I had been made part of "an inside joke just for the employees," that I "didn't want to know," and then one offered a laugh and a "sorry about that." This lack of professionalism is quite disappointing and I will think twice before patroning this establishment again, if this is how staff are allowed to conduct themselves.
