Village Snack Shop & Bakery is a hidden gem with the best prices on the island! We’re still dreaming about their cheesy pastries—they were perfectly warm, flaky, and packed with flavor. Their donut-like pastries were a hit with the whole family, disappearing almost as soon as they hit the table. Every bite was pure delight! The staff was incredibly friendly and made us feel right at home. Whether you're craving something savory or sweet, this spot has something for everyone, and it won’t break the bank. Our overall experience was fantastic, and this bakery is definitely a must-visit for anyone looking for delicious treats at unbeatable prices. We can’t wait to come back! 🥐🍩

Google
Good location, right in the center of Hanalei. The food was average or below in our opinion. We heard great things about the mac nut pancakes, but felt they were pretty bleh. The omelette was not good at all, and was greasy. Not a place we would return to.

Google
This was so good!! Was told by a local this is the place. The chili chicken and the locomoco were to die for. I’d recommend over and over. The girl serving me was so helpful in giving us suggestions and helping us get to try a lot of things. Lovely place! Also very cheap for this area and better than the fancy places! My new favorite spot.

Google
Perfect for breakfast and the best loco moco. Delicious. All the locals go here so you know it is the best.

Google
Great chili pepper chicken! Grab your food and eat on the beach. Don't skip on the pie or pastries! Everyone we have talked to that works there is so kind and patient. If you have food allergies they know their food well and will answer any questions. Really helpful for my dairy allergy and gluten intolerance.

⚠️ WARNING ⚠️ KITCHEN SHUTS DOWN AN HOUR BEFORE CLOSING I had the Chili Pepper Chicken 4 years ago before sailing across the Pacific... I was delicious. I was really looking forward to on this visit, however I arrived a half hour before closing, only to be seriously disappointed to be told that the kitchen closed at 3p ... And hour before closing. 😭 Don't make my mistake!

Google
You know it's good when an EMT who frequents here happily endorsed the food! We got the Chilipepper Fried Chicken. So tender and juicy and sweet and spicy, much better than another place we tried with the same dish! The lady who works here was also very kind and a joy to speak with.

Google
Had the chili pepper chicken combo. Not very spicey but very flavorful. The rice was very tasty but I didn’t like the macaroni salad. Chicken was very crispy and juicy.

Yelp
We really enjoyed our lunch here!! The chili pepper chicken was so good if you eat it fresh and hot and crispy. Not really spicy. The loco moco was good too. We liked how you have the choice between white or brown rice, and the choice between mac salad or a leafy/tossed salad. We tried ordering for pickup a separate time, but the chili pepper chicken is best eaten fresh rather than waiting and taking it out to the beach or elsewhere

Yelp
Home style cooking. Belly filling for a fair price. I ate the big size loco moco. It ain't fancy but it sure was enjoyable. Finished the meal with a big piece of vanilla cream pie. Yum! There's a for sale sign displayed on the front window. So get in here while the owners are still cooking.

Yelp
This is an updated review. Its been a few months since we ate here.We came for brunch n of course another excursion day!..We were craving there famous chili pepper chicken. So good!!.Hit the spot!..The only thing that was no so good was the service. The cashier had an attitude,We entered the establishment then at the counter. There was no greeting at all!..It wasn't the normal grandma cashier it was a younger girl.So She just stood there No smile at all..It seemed she didn't want to be their.Oh wells,At least the food is worth coming back for..

Yelp
Truly the best chili peppa chicken in the world. Nothing comes close. I'd fly to kauai just for this chicken.

Katarzyna J.

Yelp
10/10. Loveeee their coconut cream pie. Also had their hamburger which was so simple and good. Quickly made and friendly customer service! Also tried the vanilla haupia cake which was good, but not really my thing. Wish I tried their chocolate haupia instead! Next time I'm back I will try it :)

Yelp
We went in for breakfast. The shop has indoor & outdoor seating. We ordered the bacon breakfast burrito, the pancakes, the loco moco & got some maladadas to go. The service was great & everything was delicious.
google avatar

Yelp
I kind of like the chicken (chili-pepper) but it's not extraordinary. It is a plain fried chicken, tossed in a chili-pepper sauce. The owners are very nice and spoke to her in Tagalog, talking where we originally from, etc. The location is very convenient, if you are in the Princeville and Hanalei Bay Area. The haupia pie is just ok. We also came here for breakfast and ordered the breakfast burritos (1 sausage and 1 pork). They're ok also (sorry!). But everyone's different; maybe it's just ok for me and for others are excellent. I don't know, I'm just reviewing based on my experience and taste . Try it yourself!

Yelp
Needed a simple lunch for the kids. Village was perfect. Ham, cheese on wheat. BLT no t. Club. All god thumbs up. Good prices, about 12pp. Lots of other good stuff to be had. Simple place, good service. Let it rip.
google avatar

Yelp
Hubby wanted some pancakes for breakfast. This place delivered in spades. The Blueberry pancakes were a good buy, delicious, and completely satisfying. These guys have been in business for 40 years. And they serve good, simple food.

Yelp
Good food... friendly local haunt. We ate our first Hawaii meal here 10 years ago. Nothing much has changed... still good meal and service

Yelp
Home of the chili pepper chicken... So good. We always try & stop in to Village Snack Shop when in Hanalei. They are the creators of the often imitated chili peppah chicken. The perfect fried chicken with a sweet & spicy flavor while still maintaining that desired crunch. On our last trip to the island, we stopped in and got 2 orders of the CPC. I got a full order ($13.99) and the lady got a half order ($7.50).... half order comes with 2 pieces of chicken, 1 scoop of rice & 1 scoop of mac salad. The full order comes with 4 pieces of that delicious chicken, 2 scoops rice & 1 scoop mac salad. I am not a mac salad person so I asked the aunty if I can have another scoop of rice and she obliged. Thank you Aunty. What else can I say that hasnt been said about their CPC. It's so flavorful. The chicken is moist, the skin is crunchy and the sauce is delicious.... On a previous trip, we ordered a full tray because I had family staying in Princeville. It was great then and the previous times as well. I havent had the privilege of having any of their malasadas because by the time we usually get there, they are sold out. The other desserts look great and the various plate lunches have also got to be good. But it's the chili pepper chicken for me. Every time. Be back soon... Mahalos to the Aunty. FYI. They open early, they close early. Earlier than listed hours sometimes.

Yelp
This place is tucked away in the Hanalei Shopping Plaza. Lots of locals go here so not too many tourists. Prices are so good for the amount of food you get. Chili pepper chicken was tasty, not the best I've had but great for the price I paid. $13.99. I ordered at 10:35am but they didn't serve lunch until 11am. Thankfully the employee let me order ahead of time and the chicken was ready right at 11am. Tons of seating. Water bottles cost $1.50.

Yelp
i came here an hour before closing and the kitchen was closed but they were still serving chili pepper chicken which was lucky for me because that's what i wanted! i asked for the brown rice and green salad with no dressing. the food was super delicious. i do not have a high spice tolerance but i thought the chicken was not too spicy as long as you take the flakes off. the texture is super crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. i did not expect the chicken to be bone in but it was, which made it slightly difficult to eat. i got the regular size, which looked huge but i ended up finishing most of my chicken and salad. i would not recommend sitting inside because it can get pretty stuffy since there's no ac. service was very quick and simple.

Yelp
We had their coconut cream pie as part of a food tour. One of the best we've ever had. Really nice.
google avatar

Yelp
Taste of there chilli pepper chicken is the bomb They have other varieties of local's favorite food. Service so far the aunty who works there is so welcoming. They do have other good desserts for eat in and take out. These place around shopping village so after having good food you can walk around take a look for other locals vendors.

Yelp
Howzit everybody! Let me just say if you love fried chicken you will LOVE dis chili peppah chicken! Nah but foreal. My little family and I came out here cause we're visiting my sister and we needed to get our chili pepper fix on and let me tell you... if you're in hanalei TRY THIS PLACE OUT! It's a cute little shop right next to big save, try to go early cause around lunch it gets super busy. The aunty at the counter was super nice! She gave us a punch card (cuz you know we goin back for more). They also have a bakery side that got chiffon cakes and stuff. You need to call a day ahead to place orders. But trust me when I say you cannot leave Kauai without one. Food: You can get regular size plates or half size. The ones in my pictures are half plates, you can get 1 scoop rice with Mac salad or toss salad. The chicken... the best way to describe it is like... fried chicken but with a sweet spicy sauce. If you ever had Korean fried chicken it's similar but Korean fried chicken no moa the chili peppah. Definitely will be back everytime we visit Kauai! MAIKA'I NŌ!

Yelp
Im conflicted! The chicken teriyaki is absolutely DELICIOUS. I mean, . One of the best I've had. It's juicy and tender, the flavor is balanced perfectly between sweet and salty. The macaroni salad is also delicious. On the other hand, the combo plate, which has the teriyaki beef, spam, and fried chicken, was very mediocre. The spam is always good without too much added effort. But the teriyaki beef is overly salty, and chicken doesn't taste freshly fried. I would still recommend this mom & pop shop, at least try the teriyaki chicken! But I'd be cautious to order some other items!

Yelp
CCcombo one of a kine. And I love the pies mmmm banana cream passion fruit also the chocolate hupia. Respect aunty and unko they work hard to serve you. Local style kitchen/bakery, legendary local hang out

Yelp
Hawaiian style food tucked away in the back of the village shopping center and I finally caught open. The chicken was suggested and thankfully I listened. It was delicious! Juicy, tender and so flavorful. I ordered a mini plate, but it was so good I went back for some more. Lady at the register was so sweet and so motherly like. Plate came with brown rice, mac salad or green salad.

Yelp
This is a vegan review... I went in and explained that I'm vegan asking for just a potato hash... basically instead of using eggs for an omelet, just use potatoes. After probably five minutes of discussion, the lady at the front said they would make it. I was looking forward to getting what I thought would be a filling meal after leaving so many restaurants on the island still hungry. Unfortunately, I was charged the full price of an omelette, paying $18 (with $1 tip) for what amounted to a side of mushy potatoes drenched in oil... not a crispy potato in sight. I understand things are expensive here but charging that much for something so unpalatable was not in good form. The lady at the front was nice enough, but the food was not. I had to leave in search of more food.

Yelp
I mean, does it really get better than an OG hole in the wall run by a bunch of the sweetest aunties?! Hard to beat the food here. It's like going to grandmas house for lunch or dinner but you have so many options. Famous for the chili peppa chicken, best fried chicken in da WORLD!!! their daily specials are always suuuperrr yummy too, but you know we all come here for the chili peppa chicken... :) Their pies/ desserts are super ono too!!

Yelp
Totally disappointing experience after all the hype it got on Yelp. Was greeted with a pretty unfriendly older lady handling the orders. Fine, I can deal with subpar service if the food makes up for it. I got the combo plate that came with teriyaki beef, chili pepper chicken and spam-also comes with a side of rice and Mac salad. The teriyaki beef was hella salty. Hella salty. The Mac salad had no taste, so bland. Rice was rice. However, the saving grace was the chicken. The skin separated from the chicken and was fried to perfection and the meat itself was tender and juicy. I'm giving this a generous 3 stars based on the chicken.

Masha G.

Yelp
I was a little worried because while this place came highly recommended, the reviews were lackluster. I stuck to the recommendation and got a half order of the chili pepper chicken and a slice of the chocolate haupia. Maybe it was being out in nature and thus being hungry, but the chicken was delicious! And honestly, the chocolate haupia slice was the best I had on the island! Would absolutely and highly recommend!

Yelp
When I saw their burger selections, I assumed these would be fast-food-standard small, thin patties, and so I ordered the double cheeseburger. When my burger came out, there were two quarter-pound patties, juicy and hot to the very last bite. While you're there, get yourself a nice, traditional, Hawaiian malasada.

Yelp
Omg this place is incredible! First time in Kauai and one of the employees at our hotel recommended we try the chili pepper chicken. It didn't disappoint! So juicy, mild spiciness, and just the right amount of sweet. Came with a side of rice and Mac salad. A perfect lunch plate I'll be craving for the rest of time now!

Annie O.

Yelp
Excellent pies!! We ordered 3 and they were fresh and delicious as well as a great prices! Will definitely be returning!!
google avatar

Yelp
Best Chili Pepper Chicken and fried chicken I've ever had and that's saying a lot being from the south. I licked the bones clean the pepper sauce was just perfect and the meat fried to perfection. Only about 2 people working and it was hot inside for seating, but we got a picnic table and grabbed a drink to sip on while waiting (about 20 mins on a busy afternoon) The service was great and the old lady running the register was the sweetest. We didn't get to try the pie since they were fresh out of the oven but they looked amazing and we heard great
google avatar

karen k.

Yelp
You want the pie...any of them . All are wonderful. Get a fork and enjoys. Loved the vanilla coconut slice we had . Get there early to order and get a whole pie.
google avatar

Yelp
2.75 stars but I'll be kind and round up to three. The teriyaki beef was overly beefy and salty and not in a good way. The chili pepper chicken was good. The Mac salad was pretty bland I don't know if this is because the other items were overly salty but I feel like the Mac salad could've been executed better. There were no current menu pics on yelp and I forgot to take one but the plate special is currently at 13.99 for a full size order. The person taking orders was not in the greatest mood or very customer service oriented. I'm definitely not using another one of my meals in Kauai eating here. I'm not exactly sure why this place has such high reviews maybe it's because of lack of options in the area but I'm excited to try some of the other places in the area over the next few days. One more thing to note is that the line moved at a snails pace well orders are being taken.
google avatar

Andrew N.

Yelp
The chili pepper chicken is delicious! Perfectly fried, sauce is great, on the bone. Can get a half serving. Mac salad was just ok. Was disappointed with the chocolate haupia pie. Was like jello? Oh well. Very pleasant woman working there.
google avatar

Linet K.

Yelp
Great mom and pop stop! Delicious burgers! There other plates look yummy too! No frills and and a great quick stop for lunch!
google avatar

Arthur S.

Yelp
Decent local place to eat, super hungry and ordered a loco moco, it was good. There are seating inside but it can be quite warm. There are seating out side that you can find as well. Service was as expected. But if you are hungry, this is a decent option.

Terry Z.

Yelp
If there was a place that says Kauai it is Village Snack Shop! Love this place and the Chili Pepper Chicken, Loco Moco, and all of the Pie! Auntie and Uncle and the rest of family make the experience feel like home. Mahalo!

Marc d.

Yelp
Nice local spot with very friendly staff. We went for breakfast and the food was affordable, good portions and tasted great! A mom and pop restaurant I would go back to again!
google avatar

Yelp
Chili Pepper Chicken aka CRACK Chicken is a permanent sensation of delight. The taste and texture is perfect. The stimulation is pleasurable. Chili Pepper Chicken is a masterpiece! With each bite my mouth screams in excitement... my eyes feel warm, dense and calm... my stress is absent... I begin to feel childish... and my smile multiplies Just the thought of the chicken melts my mind and makes me salivate.

Yelp
We went to this place in a pinch when we couldn't wait the crazy wait time for Hanalei Bread Company. It was convenient and quick, and had a delicious spam musubi and malasadas. Definitely recommended!
google avatar

John C.

Yelp
Found this place purely by accident. Also nothing else was open nearby. We tried their malasada and couldn't believe how good they were. I told the lady working their they need to market their malasada as an island must eat to the world. She said all the locals know already but more people need to try it. Apart from kauai bakery in lihue, this is the best malasada in our opinion. Amazing chewiness and flavor. Also we got Loco moco and chocolate pancakes. Both were so good. The pancakes were amazing. If you've been to the Griddle in LA it reminded us of that somewhat. Very chewy The musubis were very simple but possibly the best ones on the island. Def pick some up before hanging out on your hikes
google avatar

Casey B.

Yelp
What a great way to start our morning while feeling jet lagged! First morning in Kauai and we stopped here for breakfast. I had the basic with spam, 2eggs over easy, gravy, rice and toast! My girlfriend had the Loco Moco with eggs over hard! Both plates were amazing! Great vibe and tastes like a home cooked meal. Service was also very friendly.
google avatar

Tesla M.

Yelp
By far the BEST malasadas on the island of Kauai! Get in line EARLY and get at least a dozen freshly made, warm malasadas. If you're not heading home or to the beach with the traditional brown paper lunch bag, full of the Village Snack Shop & Bakery malasadas, then you're missing out on some true ALOHA! From freezing-cold Fairfax, VA Victoria
google avatar

Joyce L.

Yelp
We had the tropical pancakes. It's banana, mac nut and something else I can't remember. I don't like banana or mac nut very much but I finished my entire pancake so that's saying something. I also got the breakfast burrito with Portuguese sausage. I was really questioning the lettuce in a breakfast burrito but thought I'd give it a try and IT WAS GOOD!! I got ketchup and hot sauce as I always eat my breakfast burritos that way but it didn't need any of it.
google avatar

Alissa G.

Yelp
Not sure what they are good at but breakfast isn't it. My French toast was smashed flat and burnt. Husband's loco moco was didn't have enough gravy and the egg was not cooked right. We also shared a malasada - wrong texture - maybe because it wasn't fresh?
google avatar

Alisa K.

Yelp
Plate lunch and cheeseburger were decent but my husbands fish and chips were literal fish sticks from the freezer section of a grocery store

Emma C.

Yelp
The food was inedible. Came here based on other reviews and it was terrible. The person checking us out was lovely but the food was awful. We ordered a teriyaki beef plate. The beef tasted like dirty oil and had a green sheen on it. We took one bite each just to be sure it was as bad as it looked and it was. Bummer, we had high hopes for a Hawaiian plate lunch here.
google avatar

Paul T.

Yelp
When you're within 300 miles of this hole in the wall, you should swing by for auntie's Chocolate Huapia. Each layer in this slice was PERFECTION! Shortbread cookie crust, coconut custard, chocolate pudding, whipped cream, coconut shavings. So they sell this by the slice, small pan or larger pan. I was there on a Thursday afternoon around 1:30pm and this was the last slice available for the day. 4 of us shared that one slice (why oh why didn't I eat this whole thing by myself like the greedy pig that I am?!) and all 4 of us loved it. 2 of the 4 don't even like desserts that much and even they really liked it. I went back inside to ask if they had anymore slices available, but alas, they wouldn't have any more made until the next morning. We were on a weeklong Hawaiian cruise and ate tons of nice desserts but this really might have been my favorite dessert from the entire trip. I can't rate anything else served here because the chocolate haupia was the only thing I had but dang, that was a winner!

Evette A.

Yelp
Found this spot searching for pancakes for my kid. This sweet little slice of heaven is tucked away behind the front street. The breakfast is nothing short of fantastic! The eggs and bacon are cooked to perfection, the pancakes and French toast are superb! I would highly recommend eating here for breakfast! If we come back for lunch or dinner there is no doubt in my mind the food will be outstanding! The lady at the counter is super nice and friendly, she was a pleasant delight!
google avatar

Khrystine C.

Yelp
Local recommendation! The Chili Pepper Chicken is what they're known for so, obviously, that's what we had to order! Good flavor, just wish it was a tad bit spicier :) more importantly, the chicken wasn't dry! Hallelujah! They also had different kinds of pies that looked really good!
google avatar

Luanu'u M.

Yelp
Love their musubis. Absolutely delicious and er went almost daily but they open at 730 and if you don't get there early. The musubis will be gone. Che k this local place out. There was always a line for their plate lunches and pies.
google avatar

Melody T.

Yelp
BEST KEPT SECRET OF THE NORTH SHORE! I'm a local and live in the south shore, every time I drive up north I HAVE to get chili peppa chicken from snack shop! I always bring my visitors to snack shop and gas station to see which one they like better and my fav is def this one. Sooooo good!!!

Elizabeth C.

Yelp
We ordered from the breakfast menu as breakfast was ending, but they were happy to accommodate us. I ordered the tropical short stack (banana, coconut, macadamia nut) pancakes while my husband ordered a breakfast burrito (BLT with eggs & salsa). Both were good, served in takeout containers, but not outstanding. I was disappointed in the pastry selection, which included donuts, cherry turnovers, and Haupia pies (chocolate or vanilla, by the slice or whole). That's it! I was expecting an actual bakery. Instead, this had more of the feel of a diner with a walk-up counter for ordering, and very few pastry options. The inside looks very run-down and could use an update. Also, although there were very few people, our simple order took between 20-25 minutes to get ready. Why? Well, from what I could observe, the kitchen staff is elderly and moved very (VERY) slowly. The man making the eggs looked like someone should be waiting on him. There's a "for sale" sign in the window and I think this may explain my observations. I hope someone buys this establishment and increases the pastry options and improves the speed with which orders are fulfilled. Until then, however, I really can't recommend it.
