After 6+ years at Villas Tech Ridge, I've recently moved out and found a place closer to work, family, etc. But that's not to say VTR isn't a great place to live.
While it was a decent apartment complex when the Morgan Group managed it, things really improved once Alliance took over. Most notably, Alliance is waaaay better at communicating with residents, whether it's letting everyone know about some maintenance that will be happening or inviting residents to share feedback. Whereas the Morgan Group had a terrible habit of announcing inspections or maintenance inside units just a few hours before they started, Alliance sends out email and paper announcements well ahead of time, includes extra info like helpful maps of the property, and is generally just much more respectful of the residents, schedules, and space. Alliance's communications also carry a much friendlier tone, like the general notice about what people can do to prevent car break-ins, as opposed to the Morgan Group's tendency to react only after incidents happened -- and even then they seemed to be trying to deflect responsibility instead of providing tips or information.
While at VTR, rent was raised quite a bit through the years, but that's unfortunately true of all rental properties in the Austin area. When I moved in, my one bedroom was $727 a month, and by the time I moved out, my lease renewal option was well over $1000/month. Needless to say, that played a part in my decision to move, though the catalyst for finding a new apartment was actually my dog. I initially moved into VTR because they had no weight limit and allowed boxers; however, when Alliance first took over, their list of restricted breeds included boxers. Since I permanently foster senior dogs from Austin Boxer Rescue, that was a big issue for me. While Alliance was kindly willing to allow me to renew my lease and keep my elderly boxer, they couldn't tell me whether or not they would allow me to bring in another one when she passes away, so I started looking for a new place. Since then, they have done away with all breed restrictions (YAY!), but by the time that was in effect, I'd already signed a lease elsewhere :(
In the 6+ years I lived at VTR, I never felt unsafe, never experienced any crime, never even had a potted plant disappear off my patio. The Morgan Group left a lot to be desired in terms of customer service, but the Alliance team was pretty great, even when I was moving out. In fact, the assistant manager was one of the nicest people I've ever dealt with in an apartment office, and the manager was super friendly when answering all my dumb questions over the phone. They were even very forgiving about damages, charging me only for a few things that obviously needed to be repaired/replaced and not worrying about the kind of wear that can happen over so many years.
I'm definitely happy at my new place, being closer to work and family, but if I'm ever needing a place up north again, I wouldn't hesitate to move back into VTR.
