"Add to Your Music Library at Vinal Edge This is a nice big record and cd shop in the Heights where you can buy, sell, and trade new and used albums. The place has been in business since the mid-80s and has some attitude, spunk, and a loyal clientele. Photo via Vinal Edge Facebook page"

I have been here before but this was my first ever record store day and i chose to do it here. I got there at like 8 on opening time. We waoted in line for about 2 hours snd when we went in it felt ✨️Magical✨️ i ended up getting the Laufey live record but i was disapointed they were already sold out of most stuff. Charli, Beabadoobee, Lil Uzi Vert, Gracie. Next year ill be here at 7 to secure i GET WHAT I NNEEEEDD. What they did have was a bunch of taylor swift fortnite and i regret not grabbing it because it seems to be very valuable.

Google
Great local shop. Cool owner and employees. I sold a used turntable and pre amp for a fair amount. I've also purchased a few albums here. They have a deep collection of vinyl. Go explore!

Google
Vinal Edge is my all time favorite record shop in Houston! I visit usually once a week to dig and find vintage vinyl records to add to my extensive collection! Always feel the prices are fair and reasonable and a solid value. I have even purchased a couple of holy grails on my wish list of their wall of fame, including an amazing original copy of Aerosmith’s Honkin On Bobo! 💣 Great store! You should check it out!

Google
I like this record shop. As a part time collector and music enthusiast with a creative background, I enjoy digging in the crates looking for obscure records that I can experiment pulling samples from. Final Edge has a decent selection and I have found a few hidden gems there. Most of the pricier records, I already have in some form so I’m just going in there looking for bargain bin records or collections. The last time I walked out of there, I believe I had 10 records for $4. If I’m not careful, I could spend hours in here just looking through records. I love to see that the place is packed every time I go in. If you are a music lover or collector on any level, this is a mandatory stop.

Google
Large selection of new and used vinyl! Very good prices and they have everything from country, jazz, punk, rap, rock, to ghibli film soundtracks and more. Staff was friendly over all. To bad they don’t have a inventory of the used vinyl. Music playing over the store was ok. Wish there was more variety on the rotation. Over all very good experience and we walked out with some vinyl :)

Google
This is a really killer vinyl shop, the metal section was superb, loads of bands and even some lesser known ones in the CDS, I everything else also was filled with lots of awesome music and tons of genres

I was going to just return my merchandise but I decided I NEVER want to step foot in this establishment again! I just won't patronize a business that pick and choose which customer they want to assist!!! ALL EMPLOYEES were very much bothered by us asking questions and for minor assistance however I saw them being attentive to several other people (so we all know they cater to a certain demographic) Rude! Like I told him when I called.. My money is green and they are definitely not the only game in town! Clean up that place and light a candle it stinks in there! 🙂

Google
really good staff, very well organized, and theres always new stuff every time i come. they have a well selection of different genres for every one. I would highly recommend this place. in my opinion best record store in houston.

Yelp
Really cool place to check out decades of music. Huge selection of vintage vinyl's but also has newer music. Mainly just a fun place to visit for a lazy weekend afternoon. Parking garage and some places to eat are within walking distance.

Yelp
Pretty neat Prices were a bit high compared to other places, and it was very crowded but K had fun.

Yelp
Located in the heart of the Heights near the hip and historic part on 19th street near Yale. Very packed old school vinyl and music store. Like to swing by to check out the indie and folk inventory; fav's include Wild Nothing, Beach House, Tame Impala, etc which they do carry. Their inventory is mostly composed of new vinyls from various artists that are sold at MSRP or slightly above what you could find online. Only complaint is that their used vinyl inventory is limited and a bit overpriced. Was expecting a bunch of stuff at $2 or less but maybe those days are gone.
google avatar

Yelp
Located among all the antique shops on 19th St in the Heights, this record store is right in the middle of Heights' heart and spirit. Parking is available on the streets. Came here to check out their vinyl collection, pleasantly surprised with wide range of Indie bands. There seems to be an extensive collection of CDs too. The downside, compare to the vinyl previously bought online, their vinyl tend to be more expensive. The used classical vinyls collection is very limited and also run pretty expensive compare to similar record stores.

Chad C.

Yelp
The service is good at Vinal Edge but they always seem to be out of what I'm looking for, with the frequent reply "check back next week." The reason for the three stars is more on the high pricing. Going above retail on new vinyl is not cool.
google avatar

Yelp
I'm glad this is located in the Heights since no neighborhood is complete without a record store. I dig the location and how they get new inventory more often than I've seen with other stores. Their stock seems more pricy than others and I wish they had more of a diverse selection with most of their items being classic rock, jazz, and r&b. There's some rap/hip-hop, electronic, and metal here but you might have to head to another store for a more expansive selection in those genres. It's not gonna stop me from coming here every once in a while since I love browsing a record store when I want to kill time.

Yelp
If I have time, I make it a point to check out at least one local record store when I'm in a new city. I was in Houston for a music fest and had some daylight hours to kill before day 2. Vinyl Edge was a few blocks from my hotel. What a great record store! It was the day before RSD, so it wasn't crowded like it was going to be the following day (and TBH, RSD has grown from a necessity for collectors into a bloated day of reprints most of us don't need). The selection is pretty impressive. I picked up some records from the clearance, recent trade-in, the jazz, metal, and general rock sections. Records ranged from $2 (!) to $18 for me, including some I've looked for a long time (Ornette Coleman's "Shape of Jazz to Come") to pleasant surprises (Young Widows). There were catalogue titles I rarely see in stores (Nirvana, The Cure) which will save you on discog/ebay shipping and fees even if these were mostly out of my willing pay range for the day. I was out with a stack of records in great shape for $65, best record store haul I've had in a lonnnng time. Note--sign posted that they opened at 10, we hung out till 10:10 and they did finally open. No issues with service other than that.

Yelp
Loved it here! Got 3 records, but would've gotten more if they weren't so pricey. Besides the price issue, they have an amazing selection, vibe, and location. Would definitely recommend you go at least once.

Conrad S.

Yelp
They had a good selection and some helpful staff, but it was just a bit of a pain to move around. There were boxes, crates, and clutter all around that made it claustrophobic and just a pain to move around and look at stuff.
google avatar

Yelp
Friendly/Joyful Record shop with an amazing staff. On my first visit, the record playing caused me to stay an extra hour just to browse around. Highlights : The International Section is quite impressive. Vinal Edge's selection is unique & often holds rarities; which I appreciate as a collector. During my second visit; I delivered a few records to sell & I was rude to the owner due to my own impatience. Still! The very next day after my vinyls were catalogued , I was still offered a high price for sale value. & Trade In is even better considering the new items you'd leave with. I definitely will return. Love their shop. Worth the drive for the chill/comforting experience. Support Your Local Record Stores!!!

Yelp
Overpriced... but more much more than that abrasive people! Oh did I mention limited stock and looks like a trash can...

Yelp
Could this be the David to Amoeba's Goliath? Just the funkiest collectible store full of vinyl records as well as gear that supports playing them. It's groovy this format of music has survived and found new generations of fans ("...uh a 'C-D'.. wutz that, Granny?"). There are compact discs here also. Y'all know Amoeba Music is where Californians go to dig around and reminisce about childhood music obsessions and pick up a vintage thing or two commemorating your nostalgic trip. Well, Texas has Vinal Edge. I imagine it doing gangbusters business if it sprang up in Jamaica (or Cuba too), i.e. places where vinyl remains a popular preferred form of music sharing and communication among artists and plebeians alike. Support for indie specialty shops like this is more important than ever in today's era of e-commerce stomping brick-and-mortar practically out of existence. Keep rockin' 'n survivin', Vinal Edge. \\m// \\m//

Yelp
Great collection of things! I love it here , great vinyls and owner is super friendly. Not usually busy which I love !

Yelp
Incredible place. My only regret was being pushed for time. Huge selection of CDs and of course vinyl. Really good prices too.

Yelp
Vinal Edge (not to be confused with Vinyl Edge - snark snark) is one of my most frequented brick and mortar establishments besides my job and maybe Trader Joe's on Shepherd. I am an avid record collector - my collection spans across 33 genres and sub-genres of music from 1940 through today. I like Vinal Edge for what I call my "Emo Bear" stuff. Emo Bear Music is a term I use for music produced and distributed from the early 90's through early 2000's. If this genre were going to manifest into a Care Bear, the music would be Emo Bear. Vinal Edge is also a pretty sweet spot for the occasional breakbeat or drum n' bass record from the same era. I even found a pretty sweet breakbeat jazz compilation primarily featuring Rabbit in the Moon. I am a HUGE HUGE blues and jazz collector but I've never scored those genra gems there. If there's ever a new release but not super hot off the press, sometimes you can find an open copy there; like I just bought an open copy of Vance Joy's Lay it on Me. Definitely stop by if you're out of town and want to check out one of Houston's finest record shops.

Yelp
I have been going to Chuck's too long. He gets it. In-store events, selection, and knowledgeable staff, to feed your vinyl habit. You need a turntable preamp, amp or speakers Vinal Edge has that too.

M J.

Yelp
They have a decent selection of records. However, the people who work there are a joke. They're totally useless.
google avatar

Alan S.

Yelp
Hey records! Who knew people still buy these... it's like opting for a stick shift. At least they's got a big selection (as compared to stores that don't see records) and their prices are only slightly more than half-price books and ebay (the places were I previously knew I could get records). The staff is friendly... so that's a perk. Come here for your record needs! I just don't need any.
google avatar

Yelp
I love checking out independent CD and record stores, but this one didn't quite hit the mark for me. Pros: Location.Love West 19th Street. Such a good place to walk around sho. Cons: 1. INCENSE? Really? Guaranteed way to give half your patrons' headaches! (We only managed a couple of minutes inside and the ran outside for some fresh air!) 2. Pricey.
google avatar

Rena G.

Yelp
This is one of those spots where you know what you're getting into and what its gonna be like and yet you still end up going there. I'm going to be fair and say that they have a decent selection of new and used vinyl. However some of their selection is overpriced. The store is organized, which I give props to but the customer service is non-existent!! First of all, we've been here more times to count and none of those times have we ever been acknowledged by the staff. No "hello", "how are you doing?" "May we help you with anything?" nada. This recent time we've visited, my bf was looking at the glass displays to see what kind of turntable needles they had, and an employee rushed past in front of us without even saying "excuse me." Again, no one asked if we needed help. I'm just a big believer in businesses being grateful to their customers. I'm not saying that employees need to hound you in the store but just simply acknowledging you would be nice! After all, returning customers keep places in business! Since the bf is a crate digger, he stops in here a lot but there are other local businesses that are customer friendly.

Yelp
Thank you for keeping your staff and customers safe, and for having a great selection and service.

Yelp
Rude Rude Rude. After spending close to forty-five minutes looking for a parking spot, one finally opened up, but we found that an inconsiderate driver had blocked the only handicapped ramp between two city blocks. That experience set the tone for what was to come. We were about to enter this store when the man behind the counter glared at me and said. "You can't bring that in here. We just got in (a collection something or other), and there is no room!". The THAT he was referring to was my mobility scooter that I need to get around after a bad fall severed my Achilles tendon. Even after the tendon's repair, I still cannot stand for long periods of time. We travel all over the world with the scooter. This is a travel model that allows me to make tight turns. I understand some places are cramped, but the attitude of this person coupled with the scowl on his face communicated his sentiment loud and clear. We live forty-five miles each way from the Heights, and when we visit we go to a number of shops. This experience left me with a bad taste in mouth. I try to support small stores whenever possible, but after this encounter I'll stick to mail order and Discogs. As we were leaving, one young lady said, "Sorry!" The store needs more employees like her who show empathy.

Zach S.

Yelp
My favorite local record store! I always find records here I don't see online or at other retailers. The people who work here are really nice and there is a good variety of music here
google avatar

Mark B.

Yelp
Fantastic record store! Great metal section. Tons of LP's and CD's. The staff is very knowledgable about about many different genres of music and products in the store. They also have some toys and collectibles. Not a huge fan of the neighborhood it's in, but it's worth dealing with the hipsters to get at the good records.

Mario M.

Yelp
Drove 30 minutes out to this store; work a lot and can't come out often. Won't be coming back to this location
google avatar

Lisa K.

Yelp
I've been to this record store a handful of times and always end up leaving with goodies I've found. The people working the store are always personable and eager to assist you in your quest for new music. The pricing is reasonable and you can always look it up on Amazon/Discogs to see if you're getting a good deal. I tend to fish through the unpriced/.99 cent bins and always find worthy treasures to take home...don't disregard them! They also have a station where you can listen to the records before you purchase them which is convenient!
google avatar

Chris W.

Yelp
I have to go 5* just because they still exist. That said; who ever CHUCK is I want to thank. Went by the other day and noticed your vintage al-bum collection has really increased. And the prices, ain't too shabby either :) Of course the ever updated info sticky note is included, and as others have complained about, they DO answer lots of pre-questions and of course give out too much info. I mean, how can I hide an album with all the sticky notes? And the beer on 3rd Thursday's? Yeah, you have my vote and with the al-bum selection, my paycheck
google avatar

Sam V.

Yelp
Great store! Super cool staff! I'm so glad they are closer in town now. Definitely best record store in Houston!
google avatar

Will C.

Yelp
Best place to buy new and used records!!!! Vinyl, cassette, or CD this place has everything you need. Sunshine, the girl with black glasses is really sweet and helpful. What can you expect with a name like Sunshine? Charlie the bearded maniac and Chuck the owner are two of the most knowledgeable music heads in Houston. They know their stuff!!! Come for the great events, classic records, and awesome staff. Vinal Edge is where it's at !!!! Plus being on 19th street among so many great local businesses really sweetens the deal. Shopping in the Heights only gets better if you spend some time browsing through all the great old records. You never know what gems you may find!
google avatar

Matt V.

Yelp
Decent selection of new and used records. Staff is pretty helpful but not the most knowledgeable I've come across. Good selection of tables and gear as well as accessories.
google avatar

Jake D.

Yelp
I own a jukebox so I'm always on the lookout for 45s. This place has a huge amount of unsorted 45s loose in boxes that I can spend hours going through. The vast majority of the ones I've picked out, they've sold to me for between $0.29-$1.00, (except for a few very obviously rare ones and even then they were really fair about the price). There aren't a lot of places you can find something like that nowadays.
google avatar

Diana D.

Yelp
Nice place lots of selections of vinyls they also play concerts and it was very nice with is was bigger but this place is amazing. They had beer as well.
google avatar

Christina H.

Yelp
Absolutely one of the best and cheaper places in Houston to buy records. Has quite a selection of new wave and punk/underground but really there is something for everyone. So far I've bought the following records from this place and have rarely been disappointed: -the police: zenyatta mondatta -the police: synchronicity -Madonna: true blue -human league: dare -eurythmics: sweet dreams are made of this -heart: bad animals -supertramp: breakfast in America -Joan Jett: glorious results of a misspent youth -Kate bush: 50 words for snow -the jacksons: triumph -Donna summer: bad girls -the judds -sandi patty
google avatar

Chris B.

Yelp
Awesome record shop, being the vinyl aficionado that I am. We stumbled across this place looked for a classic hip hop record, and what did I find? OutKast Aquemini! score fa sure. Great record store here ladies and gents. The customer service could have been better but all in all, impressive.
google avatar

Bob S.

Yelp
Always pleased with my purchases and service at Vinyl Edge! I recently traded a Pioneer tape deck for some store credit. I recommend this store to anyone wanting to sell or trade your stereo gear over Heights Vinyl.
google avatar

Danielle L.

Yelp
This place was really neat! Especially if you are a vinyl record and hardcore music fan! The pricing is good on the old/vintage vinyls! But my reason for 3 stars is that I think their newer albums are very pricey. I have seen brand new vinyl cheaper than at this place. It is most def worth a looks see!
google avatar

Cate F.

Yelp
I have been coming to this record store for almost 20 years. It is hands down the absolute best record store I have ever been in, coast to coast. I live in San Francisco now but try to swing by whenever I'm back in Houston. I remember going there in high school and buying all of the import CDs that I could... and then putting myself in Chuck's hands and discovering such gems as Parmigiani and Main. Wow, how I wish I could teleport this store to San Francisco... Vinal Edge, I love you!!!
google avatar

Liz S.

Yelp
This record store is far out (of town), but it's also faaaar oooout. The owner knows his stuff, and he has good taste. Mostly punk, noise, rock, and other hard sort of records, but if you're looking for something that's not in those categories you might want to call ahead and see if he has it in one of the massive rows of records. It's a really good browsing store, and it's got a lot of heart. Prices aren't exorbitant, but you'll get what you pay for here (he knows what the good records are!).
google avatar

Corey M.

Yelp
Best record store in town for the last 25+ years. Chuck is a gentleman and a scholar even if he does write unnecessary comments on the plastic sleeves of your LP's. Essential! Also great selection, get a poster, get a tshirt a new stylus for your turn table, they seem to have it all. Plus if you're need of good music they've always given me excellent suggestions.
google avatar

Dan G.

Yelp
I have had excellent experiences on each visit to this establishment. Small in size, but with a great used and new cd collection that will cover the tastes of those who like popular, those who like heavy, and those who want something different. They have Cd's, posters, t-shirts, a local section, magnets, and of course records. I am asked if we need help each time we walk in. The atmosphere is very laid back as well. It is on the north-end of town, but why shouldn't the north end of town have a great record shop!
google avatar

Sergio S.

Yelp
Although its former location was miles away from everything, I'd grown fond of its dusty, dungeonly, homeliness. It's new location in the Heights, however, is so handy! I'm there too much now. The vinyl bins are as awesomely stocked as they always were, but its new home seems to have breathed new life into this Houston gem. It's nice to see the Vinal edge in constant motion. I guess I'll have to learn to share!
google avatar

Veronica M.

Yelp
I found this place because of Yelp and I agree with everyone this place is a treasure. It's small you do have to do some digging but it's all worth it. The owner is very helpful from the phone call to check out. He really knows his music and artists. This place you have to hit up when you are not in a rush b/c you will be busy crate diving. I'll be back very soon and then some
google avatar

Courtney C.

Yelp
Great selection of records, new and old. Kind of small, so it can be a little cramped on a busy day.

Ray S.

Yelp
First and foremost, I am regular digger. I've crawled in storage units in NJ, warehouses in NYC and garages in Toronto. IMO the deeper the dig, generally the better. This place was OK. Decent records in good shape. Prices were high but what bothered me the most was I saw a couple 12" singles but didnt have a price on them. They were sitting on the floor so I assumed these were the cheaper records beneath the regular stock. So I ask a "how much", and what looked like was the staffer went on ebay or discogs to get a price and said to me "these are $5.99". I could NOT believe what I was seeing. I WOULD HIGHLY RECOMMEND NOT SHOPPING HERE.
google avatar

Paul D.

Yelp
Adding another star to my original 4. Stuff for any price range, which includes never played before first pressings of The Band Music from the Big Pink, to anything else you can imagine. With in store concerts, and often times free beer from No Label. Allrecords is still my favorite, for personal reasons, but these guys are the hands down best in the city for what they do. Original review................................................................................................................... I finally checked out their knew location in the Heights. About time, I live just a few blocks away. I love wandering around 19th St, and this gives me more reason to. There is a large selection of vinyl, new releases and old classics. Plenty of jazz, classic rock, and tons of punk. There is also a small selection of used CD's. It does not look like they get a lot of new CD releases. Though that is fine because the vinyl and other collectable selection is really good. The quality of the vinyl I bought seemed in good condition, and the guys that work there seem knowledgeable. I will be here more often.

Yelp
Stopped here during a lunch break- I'd love to be able to say that it was a strategic decision since it meant that I wouldn't be able to spend the time (and money) that I would've had I had more to spare, but I bumped came across mostly by accident. I walked in and straight to the CDs as I didn't want to look like a newb (I also had a purpose: to find anything by a certain band that contains a certain song that I'm supposed to learn). As I was browsing, the music playing in-house caught my ear as soon as I had time to mind what I was hearing. Actually, the music demanded my attention. Artsy, proggy, funky jazz with horns? Yes, please! "Who's this playing?" "Um... Actually, I don't know, let me check... Oh, Curlew. Yeah, it's kinda quirky. It's got some prog, jazz..." "Cool, thanks. I like it." So I made it a point to go later and grab it when it's not being played. I didn't want to deprive the other patrons of it, nor did I want to be 'that guy' that goes "ok, I'll take it." Ended up leaving with nothing I was looking for, but with two things I needed but wasn't looking for because they're not things you'd expect to find at a lot of places- jeez, am I portraying myself as a hipster... I will be back, Vinal Edge; I will be back.
google avatar

Blake K.

Yelp
This was my first time in, so I am hoping for an improvement next time. There was only one other customer in the store when I walked in, but I wasn't greeted by any of the three up at the front. That was a bit cold. I even had to say hi to one of the employees that walked by me later on. The only time I was acknowledged was when I got to the register with 4 records. I was happy with the prices on my Nick Waterhouse, Sinatra, Harry James, and Benny Goodman albums. Some of the new stuff looked a little high though. I would happily pay those prices if I felt that my business was appreciated. Maybe talking with customers can be a bigger priority than talking about viral internet pictures and videos? I hope so, because I like supporting local.

Yelp
I find myself coming here once, if not several times a week. This place constantly has good stuff coming in, and it's allowed me to branch out my musical taste as time goes by. I don't have anything bad to say at this point. My wish? For Vinal Edge to expand into vacant space next door if the opportunity arises.
