Comes With A Nameless Cat & A Line of Wine Named After The Dog
SITREP
Nestled in the foothills on the Silverado Trail side of Napa Valley, you will find the beautiful Vincent Arroyo Winery, surrounded by Shire'esque scenic perfection of trees on rolling hills and flowerful grounds.
I accompanied my friends Thad, Jennifer and Laurelyn on this delightful trip, and it was quite experience - from the cute fuzzy animals that seemed to be in charge of the winery, to the delicious wine tastings done straight from the barrel.
THE SETUP
And seriously. How can you not be a fan of a line of wine that is named after this winery's dog Bodega? Bodega is Vincent Arroyo's Chocolate Lab who oversees the wine tasters from the comfort of her doggie bed:

But that's okay, cause you see, there is also the Vincent Arroyo's named kitty named "Nameless" who provides animal-security by patrolling the premises, and I caught up with him at the loading docks:

Some good scratches on his ears and his chin, and he was buddy the rest of the tour!
OUR WINE AMBASSADOR
Krista graciously fulfilled our needs on our wine trip to Vincent Arroyo, and she was both a teacher of wine history and excellent customer service representative letting us sample many different wines.

The wine tasting room is very rustic and elegant and filled with many items related to wine geography, wine service, and just some plain cute knick-knacks. And of course, Bodega, the winery doggie:

But that was not all....
TOUR AND BARREL TASTINGS
Krista took us outside and into the next building - which is where we being followed by the "Nameless" the cat - and where we actually got to sample petite Syrah and other wines directly from the barrels.
Here Krista is coming at me with what can only be described as a giant monster-sized eye-dropper! It gets placed in the barrel, fills the vacuum of air inside, Krista puts her thumb on the top end when she has enough wine inside, then pulls it out, and drops a couple shot's worth of wine in each of our glasses. Perfection!

This was indeed the best part of the tour and the tastings were really an eye opener on the different levels of impact that wine out of the barrel has on one's palates. Some of it was strong, before the mellowing out period when the wine continues to age when it is bottled. But I think I could become a TOTAL fan of just drinking wine straight out of the barrel. [And, to clarify, let me say I mean fill my glass from the barrel, NOT but my mouth UNDER a barrel and let the spickot shoot into my mouth.] ;)
What was also intriguing is that there were almost precise measurements noted on what was taken out of the barrel, because then that much volume of that wine varietal would need to be put back IN because there is a desire to diminish as much as possible any air volume in the barrel because that would precipitate spoilage, and we can't have that!
GARDEN SPOT
Vincent Arroyo has a beautiful picnic ground area that allows for some nice chill time to relax and stretch our legs before getting back into the car and moving on. Jennifer was sweet enough to buy a bottle of the Bodega (the dog Bodega's line of wine) which is sooooo goooood! (The pooch knows his stuff! Haha!)
Bodega has some nice fruity notes but with an an underlying hint of chocolate to me.
APPOINTMENT ONLY
This is an excellent stop, but you must also call ahead and make an appointment in advance for this winery. Ours was for 10:00am on Saturday, the first stop of our day in Napa Valley. We left Sacramento at 8am, went the back way between Davis, Winters, through Lake Berryessa, and got to Calistoga and Vincent Arroyo precisely at 10am.
THE LOWDOWN
Vincent Arroyo is indeed one of best tours and tastings that you can possibly enjoy at any winery! [Just remember to call ahead for an appointment!] :)
