Following earlier Yelp reviews we found this great small restaurant. First, I rarely give five stars as I reserve that for places that have both outstanding food and great service. We arrived shortly after evening opening and upon stepping in were greeted by Arturo, the owner. As I looked around I could see reserved signs on every table, so prepared myself for disappointment. After we replied in the negative to his question of a reservation, my wife smiled sweetly and he grabbed one of the cards off a table for two and doubled it up on another table and seated us.
This was our first night in Venice and so we were prepared for high prices and Arturo did not disappoint. We started off with tagliatelle with radichio, which sounds a strange combination but was great. The pasta was perfect in every way and the sauce light and flavorful, the whole dusted with a little parm.
We didn't want to eat heavily since we were fading fast after an overnight over-the-pole flight from Vancouver so we decided to order a single main. After discussing the options after a fashion with Arturo we opted for what was described as a "breaded pork chop finished in vinegar." I expect a pork chop to be a moderate size piece of meat, so we were astounded when the dish arrived on a platter and was the size of a medium pizza! The waiter proceeded to cut it into about ten pieces. There was no sauce but the breading was redolent of vinegar, the pork was amazingly tender and the whole mouthful delicious. Be warned, this is a dish that could easily be shared by four if it was accompanied by something else. We tried hard, but only managed to eat about 2/3s of it. Arturo have us a sly little smile when we commented on the size.
We finished off by sharing a panna cotta. It came unadorned but needed no accompaniment. I think access to unpasteurized high-fat content cream must make the difference. It was smooth, silky, and tasted of dairy. Just a touch of sweetness made it a perfect finish to our meal.
With wine, water and service our meal was about 120 Euros. Expensive, yup, but worth it! If you can, make a reservation, but parties of two seem to sneak in early as we and another couple did.
