Yelp
Planned a trip to Solvang spontaneously in a weeks amount of time, and the Vinland Hotel was one of the only "newly renovated" hotels that were available to book. I have been coming to Solvang for years and have never heard of it, thought it would be a nice experience, but we were severely disappointed. I should have read the reviews before booking, but it became obvious this was previously a 2 star hotel - got a hint of new paint, new flooring, and a lounge with only booze & 5 items for small bites, and all of a sudden it became a 3+ star hotel. Its blatantly obvious they put 90% of their "renovations" on a surface level aesthetic way.
PROS: Parking was 5/5 for us, upon pulling in we thought it was just a few outside spots but we drove down the hill on the side and they have 2 covered parking structures with an ample amount of space.
Its also a very short walk to the main village area. Although its located at the end of the strip, its a 5 minute walk to downtown. We parked our car on the first day and walked all weekend, it was definitely a plus being from LA where you have to drive everywhere.
The beds are very comfortable. However the pillows, not so much. I think we're just spoiled with foam pillows at home..
CONS: The check-in desk is situated in such an awkward place in the corner of the room with a big living room like seating area right in the middle. There's no obvious way to stand in a line, everyone is pretty scattered around. We wrapped around the couches and just hokey-pokeyed around until we got to the front of the line.
Get in the elevator to go up to the 2nd floor facing the "countryside". Look down & the building safety permit has expired in July 2023. We get to the second floor and we're outside before we have to go through another door to get to the rooms.. and once you step out of the elevator to the outside - especially at night, you're left in the darkness because the overhead outside lights don't work.
We get to the room, and the layout is just awkward. To the right side of the door is the bathroom sink with a two-sided mirror, I'm assuming the other side of the mirror was supposed to be a vanity but there isn't one. The toilet & shower are in their own separate area with a door. The shower only has one flimsy curtain and no inside curtain to keep the water in. I took a shower making sure the curtain was closed all the way and when I turned the water off to step out, the bathroom had flooded extending out of the door, and onto the carpet in the room by the door. The fan inside the bathroom doesn't work, even though there's two switches clearly on, so all of your steam will pour out into the room. - And I guess the builder had some fun installing the sink because the hot & cold indicators are reversed. When on, its correct but the color coding is on the wrong sides.
The air is extremely loud when turned on. The whole room sounds like a jet engine is taking off. Our balcony view was overgrown trees with a hint of a view of the nearby valley.
The in-room wifi doesnt remember you when you come back to your room like it should for 24hrs atleast on your device. Constantly have to log back in when you come back to the room.
The walls are EXTREMELY THIN. If you're a light sleeper like we are, you'll hear every footstep, every laugh, every conversation, every dog bark, every child screaming bloody murder, and the housekeeping talking extremely loud in the hallways in the early morning hours. We didn't get one peaceful night. There seems to be no regard for a peaceful stay. Bring earplugs if you plan to stay here.
To top it off, there are NO DINING options at this hotel. And they know it, and they'll judge you from the front desk twice over for bringing takeout food to your room. The V lounge in the hotel has a 3 page menu for cocktails & a half a page of 5 items of "small bites". No entrees. Arriving Friday night after a 3 hour drive, we don't want olives and flatbread as dinner, we opted to order takeout from a nearby restaurant and have it delivered. My bf went to pick up the order from the driver downstairs in the lobby and he said the front desk gave him judgemental looks because of it.
Overall, this stay quickly became a nightmare of sorts. The pictures online are deceiving, and this hotel needs many more upgrades to even be considered a decent stay. A Hilton hotel would give you much more than whatever one coat of paint was supposed to do here.
