30 Curious Corners in California

"For anyone over the age of 30, the arcade can be a place full of nostalgia. You may fondly remember pizza grease on your fingers as they mash the colored buttons and jostle the joystick, soda coursing through your veins and a horde of nearby onlookers as you try to reach the top of the leaderboard. Such love for vintage arcade games, particularly pinball machines, is what spurred Gene Lewin to open Vintage Arcade Superstore, one of the largest and most respected resellers of arcade games and pinball machines in California. Lewin was the owner and operator of several arcades called Pinball Plus throughout the 1980s and ’90s, and wanted to continue to share his love of old-school gaming with the masses. Behind an unassuming baby blue exterior, the Vintage Arcade Superstore is an 11,000-square-foot facility in Glendale housing hundreds of vintage games including classics like Pac-Man, Street Fighter, and Donkey Kong. The 2,000-square-foot showroom is fitted with 50 arcade games and pinball machines. Whether you’re looking to team up to take on Shredder in Ninja Turtles, or showcase your basketball skills in NBA Jam, or practice your driving in Cruis’n USA, this place has a game to transport you back in time." - ATLAS_OBSCURA

Google
I reached out to the owner just looking for info on where I might be able to find an old-school baseball card or sticker vending machine. Nothing to do with making him money or bringing him business. But he still took the time to help me out, no hesitation. I really appreciate that kind of generosity. Says a lot about the kind of person he is and the values behind the business. Respect!

Google
Gene and his staff are awesome! Gene is honest and knows his craft. Would never go elsewhere with my Ms Pac-Man.

Jason Doeren

Google
Gene is the real deal. He has owned and operated arcades in California since the 1970s and it shows in his expertise, You want your arcade and pinball restored as it was back in the arcade Gene is your guy. Sharp as a tack. And he is a straight shooter. Worth the price. I had Gene restore a Big Blue Gen 2 Street Fighter 3 -3rd Strike - beautiful and arcade accurate. Gene uses the best of the best of CRT monitors and parts. I've dealt with other arcade dealers and those dealers turned out to be fraudulent and dishonest. Put your trust in Gene like I did and get rewarded.

Arto Abraham

Google
VAS IS the place to come to get the old school arcades from the 80’s. Gene and the crew are the best.

I absolutely love this business! Gene and his team are incredibly knowledgeable, quirky, fun to talk to and very helpful. I just finished restoring a Tron arcade game that was destroyed in a flood. Without Vintage Arcade, it would still be a pile of non functional parts and a warped and rotted cabinet. Gene helped me get the boards working, upgrade to a modern power supply and Sheri reconditioned my original monitor. In addition, his whole team took the time to help me with the process, giving sound advice. As a result my Tron lives again! Thanks Gene!

Google
More than fair prices and i got everything i needed for my vintage pinball machine! Amazing what they have in stock! Highly recommended.

Outstanding business and staff. Thanks Gene.

Google
I had the opportunity to stop by Vintage Arcade Superstore and meet Gene and his awesome team today, as I needed to pick up a clean monitor for a Dig Dug cabinet. Going through the warehouse and the front of the house showroom was magical. I’ll be back for sure and would recommend to anyone in the arcade hobby without question.

Yelp
Wow, this is quite an operation! Whether you want to rent the space out for a party or you need an obscure part for your vintage Discs of Tron environmental cabinet, this place does the job. The staff is incredibly skilled and knowledgeable at repair and restoration of vintage machines--but they also sell new vids and pinballs.

Yelp
Last year my wife and I celebrated our December birthdays at Vintage Arcade Superstore. The celebration was really special because we were celebrating a milestone birthday for my wife! We booked the party with Gene ( the owner). He was great to deal with. We had booked the place for party for (2) hours but he let us come early to setup our tables and chairs. They have a small office where you can put food and drinks for your guests. All our guests had fun, especially the parents since a lot of the video games were the same ones we played when we were younger!! Since it look like everyone was still enjoying themselves, we asked Gene if we can have another hour for the party ( of course for an extra fee which we didn't mind) and he obliged! The bonus for me was there were multiple Street Fighter 2 machines! This place is highly recommended!

Yelp
A little while ago I took my MPU from my Fire! Pinball machine to Gene at Vintage Arcade Superstore. He replaced a pre transistor and a TIP 100 transistor for a reasonable price. The only problem was he did it too quickly. While he replaced the components I had free rein of the 100s os arcade games in his warehouse/superstore. I played as many as I could. This place also hosts events/parties, definitely worth considering for my son's next party. Thanks Vintage Arcade Superstore, my Fire! Is back at 100%

Yelp
Great family atmosphere, clean, good deal for an hours worth of play, $25 to play for the entire day or $15 for an hour.

Yelp
We rented the showroom for two hours to celebrate my husband's birthday. I'm so glad we did. It was SO FUN. We paid a little extra to include the smaller room that was mostly 1970-80s pinball games. Total there were 55 guests. It was worth getting the smaller room so there was an area that was more quiet. We set up a snack table in the entryway and an ice chest for drinks in the small office-like room. The office area was also a good spot for folks to stash cups and personal belongings, and a good spot for a few people to sit and chat. They had maybe 3-4 stools to sit on. We brought step stools for small kids to stand on if games were too high to reach. There's not enough empty space in this place to serve a birthday cake or for people to sit and eat together. But no one cared about that, and it was a great party.

Testudo F.

Yelp
Gene is really knowledgeable on everything video game related. Had a cocktail Pac-Man table that was stored for several years and we discovered a family of mice made their home inside the game. Gene went to work and was able to clean up the wiring and replaced several very old parts. It's working like it did 30 years ago! If you're looking for someone to work on a game or you are looking to buy. Vintage Arcade is the place to go!

Yelp
Great showroom with beautifully maintained machines! The staff was also very very nice!

Madison C.

Yelp
I think this is one of the coolest places I have gone too! There are so many cool vintage and new games to play/test out!!

Alisa S.

Yelp
My husband went to Gene to get a Ms. Pac-Man and Galaga game and boy did he deliver. My husband could be happier! His inner 10 year old is alive as well! Very professional and they delivered very quickly as promised. I would highly recommend.

Yelp
This place is awesome for a party - for kids and adults. Not only bc the games are set to free play, not only bc the selection of pinball and video games are crowd favorites, not only is the capacity of the showroom roomy enough for all, but the staff is also incredibly nice and lovely. To give you an idea how much fun it was, we had to shut the power off to end the party. Thank you VAS for a great party!!!

Yelp
Rented the showroom last Saturday for my son's 9th Birthday party. Everyone had a blast! Both the children and the parents had fun! All arcade machines were free play and there were plenty around so everyone had a chance to play! The only thing I wish was if there would have been more space to set up tables and chairs inside. Apart from the awesome arcades, you can take your own food and drinks when you rent the showroom. Definitely a fun place! The owner was very nice and on the day of the party, his employees were helpful! A+++

Yelp
This place is on another level! (ha...) Gene and his team work hard to keep all of the games in tiptop shape. Gene is honest, personable, knowledgeable... and he keeps up to date with technology... if you have any inquiries, don't hesitate to reach out... he's very responsive. This guy has a passion for what he does and he just wants to share it.. oh ya, He has like every game you can possibly think of... and they can be upgraded... from cashless card readers, customizations, lcd screens... (he does an amazing job!) Can't thank this guy enough!

Yelp
This spot is amazing. We had my daughter's 10th birthday there and girls, boys, and parents were all similarly enthralled with the vintage arcade games and pinball. Gene, the owner, and all the guys who were there during the party, were extremely helpful, friendly and fantastic ambassadors for these games. They knew all about them and we ended up chatting quite a bit about the history and mechanics of the machines. Though they do rotate because of sales, at the time we were there, we had a winning group on the floor: Galaga, Centipede, Milipede, Donkey Kong, A Terminator-themed game, driving games, my husband's now-current-obsession: Joust -- and many, many more. Not giving 5 stars only bc I'd like to encourage them to keep improving the party space -- more open for chairs and more room for food/drink tables so I can throw hubbies' next bday party there! But really, this place is gangbusters! Rent it!

Yelp
Do not shop here. Ask anyone in the pinball industry who Gene is, as everyone in "HIS" industry knows him, and known him well for decades. Gene took my tempest in for repair, kept it for 4 months, then he had the balls to call me-again while I am waiting for my Tempest to be repaired by him, and asked me if he could use my arcade game to fix another customers tempest that he just got in to repair.. that made me soo insanely mad, but not as mad as I am now, as I just discovered he did do the totally illegal act he asked me about, and ripped me off beyond belief.. and now I have a dead tempest.. WAIT!! I paid Gene a lot of money for said "repair". What a crock Again, ask ANY PINBALL EXPERT, sales, repair-ANY PINBALL PERSON, THEY ALL KNOW GENE!! Ask somebody before you deal with this fraud.. If you want to know a lot more about this thing, feel free to reach out to me,, Good luck if you read this, and continue to do business with this thing

Jeff T.

Yelp
Gene Lewin dropped the ball and failed to follow through! I requested pictures of the game I was going to purchase, before any restoration work starts. After three times, he still never sent any pictures! This is not a difficult request! We had agreed earlier that the pictures help me make a decision towards whether to do the full restoration or not. So why not any pictures? Does he expect the customer to just make an arbitrary decision in blind faith? If Gene drops the ball before getting a customer's money, what happens to his commitments after he gets the money? Avoid this business!

Yelp
Had a birthday party here and it was fantastic! Gene and staff were great hosts and all of our guests loved the various games including pinball machines.

Yelp
This shop is super sweet. Brandon D. and I stopped through on our anniversary last year. Kind of a hole-in-the-wall, but it's loaded with classic, hard-to-come-by-these-days arcade games set to FREE play. The sales floor is practically an interactive museum with a similar set-up to San Francisco's Musee Mecanique and Vegas' Pinball Hall of Fame. If you're in the market for a stand-up machine, no matter how obscure, I recommend checking with these folks first.

Mats H.

Yelp
I bought an Outrun Standup Cabinet from Vintage Arcade Superstore and could not be happier, the game looks and runs as new although it is over 30 years old. Gene did a fantastic job with the restoration, including new artwork for the sides (everything looks perfect) and delivered it to me in Seattle with no issue. At first I was uncertain if I would regret spending this much money on a toy, but I have never been happier with a purchase, Gene and Vintage Arcade Superstore make dreams come true.

Yelp
Being a huge fan of all things electronic, I have to love this place. As I approached the warehouse door (which seemed to be hemorrhaging Galaga and Pac Man cabinets), one of the employees approached me. I asked if I could take a look around. His reply? "Of course. And if a machine comes on when you flip the switch, feel free to play round." Excellent. I wandered around a bit, completely pleased. They have everything from Fireball to Dance Dance Revolution, and some shit I've never even seen before. I mean, a Nugent pinball machine? I spoke with the owner, who was totally friendly and full of information. I left with a fantastic impression. If you are in the market for a cabinet (or just parts), new or old, go here.

Yelp
Vintage Arcade is a great place to buy your NEXT standup or sit down arcade game console for the following reasons: 1) Gene, the owner, (who also happens to be a very nice down to earth guy), has a tremendous passion for what he does. He started this business because he loves the vintage arcade units he sells. No one I know of, has a better knowledge and expertise of how these units work. And besides why not help an established family owned and operated business continue to succeed in what they loved doing for over the past 40 years? 2) Selection.... W(O_O)W!!!!! talk about walking back into a nostalgic time machine!!! If your looking for an vintage arcade unit, this store most likely will have it, or will help you find it and fix it if needed. This is LA's premier Pin ball machine, novelty crane machine, and vintage electronic standup and sit down consoles galore store!!!! 3) Repairs, this is the place to go if you want to repair your vintage arcade working again. Gene has been doing this for so long, (since 1971), he can repair these arcade units not only in his sleep but even better when he is awake. 4) Pick up and/or delivery of your or their arcade games, if scheduled in advance by appointment. 5) Party rentals- they deliver all over to LA and Orange County. When was the last time you had an entire arcade delivered to your house party? Why not surprise your friends and relive your old glory/ditch high school & play arcade game days again? 6) Trade up, buy, or sell your broken or working arcade machines to Gene. Why not sell it to the man who can find a happy home for your arcade game once again? 7) Sage advice- Gene can recommend what arcade games are the most affordable, desirable, or collectible units to buy if you need guidance. 8) Free demos- walk into Genes amazing arcade museum of fun, and he will let you play the games you're interested buying. BTW- Gene sold me a wonderful and trouble-free 50 arcade games in one stand up arcade unit, and my kids and I always compete to see who gets the highest score. I recommend you visit Vintage arcade and buy the arcade game you always loved playing as a kid. Thanks Gene!!! for delivering us many happy hours of reliable fun!!!!

Yelp
My friends and I walked into this mysterious glorious warehouse filled with relics from our childhoods. Arcade machines: Star Wars, Mortal Kombat, Street Fighter II, Galaga, Donkey Kong, Space Wars! Pinball Machines, including one called "Wizard" featuring Roger Daltrey of The Who. For the first couple minutes there was no sign of human habitation, as we tread among the electronic forest. Finally, a diminutive salesman came out and offered to let us play wahtever we wanted. I don't know if I will ever have the opportunity to purchase an arcade machine, but this store offers that opportunity, along with nostalgia up to here.

Yelp
Loved this place. Me and my family had a great time there. My 8 year old loved all the vintage games. Definitely will be back.
google avatar

Yelp
I've got a cabinet of my own so I had talked to Gene about picking up a new jamma board and he told me to come on down. I picked up good ol' sunset riders and he tested it for a bit to make sure everything was good to go.. I get home and had some problems getting it to work in my cabinet so I headed back and the game still worked for him so he let me know I probably have a voltage problem and let me know how to test it and adjust it.. game works now and happy as can be :D will definitely go back!

Yelp
Anyplace that helps keep the dying art of classic coin-op amusements alive is tops in my book. Gene graciously let my wife & I, play Tron LE which was headed to Flynn's Arcade at Disney's California Adventure!!! Awesome!!!

Kristen W.

Yelp
My husband and I have been looking to buy our own arcade style Police Trainer for years. Gene found one and restored it for us beautifully. When it came, the monitor ended up being a tiny bit dark...so he had a new one brought out to us within an hour. The delivery men also got it in through all our tiny doors and situated perfectly. I'm excited to see what other games he can find for us!

Tony L.

Yelp
I was looking for 7 years, for a classic old school coin-OP pinball machine from 1979,I found vintage arcade superstore, talk to Gene,he found the pinball, refurbished, looks good, sounds good, I purchased ,delivered safe and on time, amazing place to visit. THANKS, love the pinball.

Yelp
This place rocks! I've driven past here a few times and then one weekend my curiosity got the better of me! I didn't realize they had a full showroom with working machines which you can hire out for parties! But feel in love with an original pac man machine in the workshop. I decided I wanted it converted with a new arcade board, they guys did and excellent job in a timely fashion and even delivered and installed the unit in my house. The machine has brought hours, if not months of enjoyment to our household and I wish I had more space for another one. These guys offered really good advice, are definitely at the top of their game and I would recommend anybody who is serious about purchasing a system or old cabinet, dropping by with the money ready to spend (as you are bound to fall in love with something when you are there)! I did and I can't say enough good things about these guys!

Yelp
I bought Street Fighter Three: Third Strike from Ralph, owner of Family Fun Arcade, but Gene and VAS handled the restoration and transactions. The whole story is kinda cool if you're into LA's storied arcade history, but basically it was lot like buying a piece of my youth. Enough about me, you care about the goods. I bought two Big Blue cabinets (Street Fighter II era) with a single joystick mounted to each. Fighting gamers would know the set up as "head to head." FFA had a few shady characters drifting in and out, and the machine needed a lot of work when I first saw it. Plastic on the control panel was marked up with graffiti, board was dusty, CRT was bad, not even sure it was operable at the time. The work was great when all was said and done, and Gene and crew were nice enough to let me into the office for periodic inspections throughout the process. I'm fairly tech savvy, so Gene was able to walk me through how the cab is built and how it operates. He even took care of the suicide battery on the CPS3 board, which is well above my knowledge base. My only issues had to do with time. It took more than a month to finalize the restoration, but everything seemed to be licensed Capcom. It's also been probably close to ten years since the cab was even turned on, so I assume the licensed parts for this kind of stuff aren't just lying around. They even redid the marquee for me so it fits big blue perfectly. If you do buy from VAS, I suggest staying in contact with them. They get very busy shipping coast to coast and you don't want your order slipping through the cracks. Research the specific board on your machine. As I mentioned, mine had a suicide battery that I got resolved. That's pretty important stuff to know when you're going to plunk down the kind of money it takes to buy yourself a vintage machine. Also, do feel free to tell Gene and crew exactly what you want your machine to look like and how it should operate. They will customize every inch of it if you ask.

Yelp
We rented the showroom for my 40th birthday. Gene made it incredibly easy. My guests and I had a blast and didn't want to leave. So easy such a wonderful party. The game selection is amazing and a good time was had by all.

Yelp
This is a big, junky warehouse of 80's video games and pinball games, all for sale. The guys there were really great and full of info. Unfortunately it's not an arcade, but they did turn on one game for us that had about 20 games you could play (for free) - most of them seemed like from the Atari family. The prices were a bit steep (I bought my Phoenix game the other year from the arcade that used to be in Fullerton for $600) but the guys are super-nice and seemed willing to cut a deal. If you are looking to buy a vid game or pinball, this is the place.

Evan W.

Yelp
I just received the 1983/1985 combo-pack Star Wars/Empire Strikes Back arcade game that Gene and his amazing team fixed and restored for me in a brilliantly fast amount of time! And they delivered it safe and sound to my home! If you have a love for classic arcade games, to buy or just rent for a party or some other occasion, Gene's Vintage Arcade Superstore is the place you want to be! Thank you so much, Gene, to you and your team for their wonderful and expedient work! You're the best!

Mike S.

Yelp
I just signed up on Yelp specifically to review Vintage Arcade. In 2007, I contacted Gene regarding the arcade game Run and Gun 2. I doubted anyone had heard of this game. Gene had it. Gene provided excellent customer service during the purchase answering all of my questions. Once the game arrived in Northern California, one of the screens and a coin slot, stopped working. Gene had a friend come to my home and fix the game at no cost. In October of 2012, I had a clarity issue with the other screen. Gene helped me, via email, fix the game myself. I think this is a very good business.

Yelp
I recently bought a street fighter 2 coin op from here as a Christmas gift. Gene was very helpful and the staff here made the machine look very clean. Before delivering it they repainted the machine, changed the top graphics and removed any graffiti. The machine was delivered safely right before Christmas as promised. I would recommend coming to this place for any video game you're looking for. They have a wide selection of pinball games as well. Next door is an arcade they rent out for parties. Overall I am completely satisfied.

Yelp
I had a coin operated video machine from the early 1990's that stopped working more than a decade ago... I held onto it for more then 10 years before I found these guys and they were able to trouble shoot it and restore it to good working order. They really know their business, and they did not disappoint me. VERY Reasonable too!

Elaine A.

Yelp
THE BEST!!!! LOVE! LOVE!! LOVE!!!! Just had my son's 7th birthday party here. Everybody had a blast! You know it's a good party place when the parents don't want to leave....No quarters, no tokens or pay cards here. Every video game/ pinball machine is on FREEPLAY!!!! Can you say AWESOME?!!!!! I have had my son's birthday parties at plenty of overly expensive kids places all over L.A.. You usually get rushed in, rushed out and they are not exactly falling over themselves to accommodate you or your party. Can't say that here....THANK YOU Gene, Marcy and Israel for being SO amazing and helpful!!!! This could not have been an easier, more pleasurable experience. This place is the best! They let me come in and transform their game showroom into a Star Wars party fest! Anything I needed they were there to help me.... If you are looking to have a party (kid, grown up or otherwise..) and you want something different than your average bounce house place. Come check this place out. They are amazing and I will be back!!! :-)

Robert M.

Yelp
Love the fact there's still a place to go for arcade needs. Very disappointed in the prices and the fact if you trade your machine in you get about half of what it's worth, but when you buy it's top dollar.

Robert S.

Yelp
This place was an amazing find. I read about it online and immediately booked it for my son's 11th birthday party. We had the store all to ourselves on a Sunday, and all the kids and parents played the arcade games and pinball machines for hours. They have a fantastic selection and the games are in excellent condition. Several of the parents told me it was the most fun they ever had at a kid's birthday party. if you want an original, private, and entertaining party spot for adults or kids, check it out. If you fall in love with one of the games, you can simply buy it and take it home...

Bruce C.

Yelp
This place is simply awesome. Back in October, we threw my son's 9th birthday party here. 10 kids, two hours of video games. They were in heaven. Frankly, I enjoyed it too as I got to play pinball and video games from my youth. If you have a child who loves video games, this is a unique, can't miss party. Great employees and Gene the owner was awesome too.

Shel C.

Yelp
Gene is the BEST! Not only did we have the most hilariously nostalgic party ever, but Gene and Andy were there every step of the way to make sure the party went smoothly. An annual pilgrimage to the Vintage Arcade Superstore is definitely in our future plans. Thanks Gene for a great time and for helping us all feel like kids again!
