4 Best Day Trips from Rome

"This is a clean, modern hotel conveniently located a short walk from Sperlonga's beaches and ideal for a short, one-to-two-night stay. Rooms feature simple, modern furnishings, air conditioning (which isn't guaranteed at hotels in this area), a TV, and a minibar with complimentary soft drinks. The cheapest rooms have sloping mansard roofs that could be problematic for tall guests; the nicest rooms have a small terrace. The property has an outdoor pool and jacuzzi, and a buffet breakfast is included in the room rate." - Laura Itzkowitz, Arlene Gibbs

Virgilio Grand Hotel

"How did it strike you on arrival? This is a clean, modern hotel conveniently located a short walk from the beach and ideal for a short, one-to-two-night stay. What’s the crowd like?It draws budget-conscious travelers who want to be close to the beach and enjoy all the comforts of four-star accommodations. The good stuff: Tell us about your room.Rooms feature simple, modern furnishings, air conditioning (which isn't guaranteed at hotels in this area), a TV, and a minibar with complimentary soft drinks. The cheapest rooms have sloping mansard roofs that could be problematic for tall guests; the nicest rooms have a small terrace. Please tell us the bathroom won’t let us down. The bathrooms are equipped with hydromassage showers but no tubs. Maybe the most important topic of all: Wi-Fi. What’s the word?Wifi is free throughout the property. Anything stand out about other services and features? Whether it’s childcare, gyms, spas, even parking—whatever stuck with you.The property has an outdoor pool and jacuzzi, which is a nice alternative if you get tired of the beach. A buffet breakfast is included in the rate. Bottom line: worth it, and why? This area isn't exactly awash in great boutique hotels or even reliable chains, and this property fills that gap. It's not a hotel anyone dreams of staying in, but it's a good option if you want to stay near Sperlonga's beaches." - Laura Itzkowitz

We stayed here for two nights in 2025 driving up from Caserta. The hotel valet was super helpful and immediately took care of the luggage and took our car to the underground garage. The front desk, the hotel restaurant staff, and the beach club staff were all extremely attentive and gracious to ensure our stay was enjoyable. ||The pool area is lovely and very spacious but the beach club is where we spent most of our time. The hotel runs a quick shuttle service between the hotel and the beach club so there’s no need to use your car while you’re here. Our hotel room was spotless and the bathroom was spacious. All the photos on their website are very accurate and current!||The center of town (two blocks away) has lots of restaurants and plenty of shops. We would absolutely choose this hotel again if returning to the area!

The quality of the staff is simply superb! They seem to challenge each other to be the best at helping their guests.||The facility is modern and spotless.||As for the restaurant, we only experienced very good breakfasts.||The town of Sperlonga is a jewel

Great 3 night stay in beautiful Sperlonga. Hotel personnel is helpful and accommodating. We had an executive room on the 2nd floor and it worked perfect for the three of us (two adults with a 10 year old), larger groups may want to consider multiple rooms. The room was spacious and clean, air conditioning worked great, we had a small balcony, the room was clean and functional. Decor may have been a little outdated, but we didn’t really care, in general the hotel looks upscale and inviting. Pool was nice, also considering many hotels in Sperlonga do not have one it was a nice to have for our son ( we would have rather been at the beach). The hotel lido is beautiful, clean with spacious umbrellas and lounge chairs. I have seen some reviews about the prices, but having grown up and vacationed in Italy often, I can say this is a very luxurious set up, with full service restaurant, which is what you pay for., the shuttle goes back and forth continuously, with no breaks until 7:00 P.M, which is an amazing service. The water at the beach is clear and has a beautiful turquoise color, as is typical of this area. Sperlonga is a gem, it is absolutely beautiful, right next to the hotel there are stairs that take you to the top part of Sperlonga, it is a bit of a climb but the amazing views are worth it, and the little town is something out of a storybook. Breakfast is OK, cakes were lovely,, our son liked the waffles. Warm items do not always get refilled, but you can ask for more. Would absolutely recommend!!!

Just spent a wonderful two days in Sperlonga and this hotel was great. I had a very large room with view of the pool area; room and bathroom were clean, spacious and well- appointed. The room was very quiet with efficient air conditioning. The staff were amazing - they were able to arrange taxi for me to and from the Fondi railway station, and helped out with other suggestions regarding half- day beach bookings and use of their shuttle service to and from their designated private beach and their beach-side restaurant. The breakfast was included and there was a huge range of food with lovely fresh fruit selections as well as cereals, breads and pastries. The only suggestion I’d make would be to include low-fat milk and dairy options, as some of us have dietary issues. The hotel is about 2 minutes walk from the Main Street with a large number of restaurants to choose from. The beach is also close if you don’t want to travel to the hotel’s private beach area. Had a wonderful relaxing few days and I’d love to come back.

Clean hotel friendly staff.....location is not a 1-4 minute walk down to the beach more like a 10 minute walk down a sloping street which you have to walk back up.... not so good when with a 70 year old mother. The hotel is set in a residential area but apart from that friendly staff and helpful. The breakfast is limited.

Everything was great. The facilities were as good as new and our room was very tidy. We got help from the room service fast as our baby had an accident and made a mess. The staff always greeted with a smile and spoke good English. The breakfast buffet included in the price was exquisite.

The hotel staff were all very friendly and helpful, despite the language barrier and breakfast was plentiful.|The hotel was tired and in need of repairs. The hotel pool was missing lots of floor tiles, piled up on the pool side. Our shower and sink both leaked water, we had to use all the towels to mop the floor.|The Wi-Fi was not great.|But by far my biggest annoyance and disgust was the cost of the sun loungers and umbrella at the private beach. This four star hotel charged €35 per day (£29) for two sun loungers and an umbrella, which should have been complimentary. For that ridiculous cost, you got NO beach towels, NO complimentary drink/water at the beach bar and NO Wi-Fi.|The hotel situated close to all amenities and the old town, which is well worth a visit. There is a lift to the top of the old town but the stairs and ally’s are so beautiful.
