What a cool place right in Gloucester. We had a roast beef sandwich and a bowl of chicken risotto. Then an apple turnover and canoli for dessert. Sat at the table on the sidewalk listening to Italian Opera. It was wonderful.

Virgilio’s Italian Bakery is a true hidden gem that brings the heart of Italy to every bite. From the moment you step in, the aroma of freshly baked pastries and breads fills the air. The selection is a feast for the eyes, with each item crafted to perfection. The pastries are nothing short of divine, with flaky, buttery layers that melt in your mouth. Whether you’re indulging in a classic cannoli or savoring a fresh sfogliatella, every bite is a reminder of authentic, homemade quality. The baked goods are made fresh daily, and you can taste the love and care that goes into each creation. The experience wouldn’t be complete without mentioning Lisa, went above and beyond, ensuring we felt welcome and helping us choose the best treats. To top it all off, the outdoor seats offered a relaxed atmosphere where you can enjoy your food while listening to soothing music that adds to the perfect vibe. Virgilio’s isn’t just a bakery; it’s an experience that feeds both the stomach and the soul. Highly recommend!

Google
Cute little bakery with fresh bread and sandwiches. I got the north ender on ciabatta bread , very good!!! Great stop to pop in for a quick sandwich!

Google
Delicious sandwiches on freshly made bread! Plenty of nice jarred olives and other goods too. Definitely check this place out if you've never been before. Highly recommend!

Google
Really good sandwiches. I got the only vegetarian option on the menu, but I'd definitely come back for another. If New Deal Fruit is a 10/10 (which I think it is), I think the sandwiches here are like a 9/10. I'll definitely be back.

I had an eggplant sub, and it was amazing! The bread was so fresh, made in the store!

Google
Nice selection of fresh breads and pastries. Very kind counter staff. Slightly pricey. Lobster tail pastry was very dense and not as satisfying as I’ve had elsewhere. I would’ve given 4.5 stars if possible

Google
Food was great! Staff was very personable and professional. Large aray of baked goods, deli goods and subs/ sandwiches. Very nostalgic shop. Like stepping into a piece of history. Interior is relatively small w/ limited outdoor seating. Parking of area can be hard to find, but food and service makes up for any inconvenience.

Yelp
Best meatloaf sandwich I ever had in my life! This places hops at lunch so look over the menu online to narrow your choices down before you go but also be prepared to accept suggestions from the wonderful woman at the counter! I had both the meatloaf and the turkey club sandwiches.. Both were delicious but the meatloaf (I had it with just lettuce, tomato & ketchup, not parmigian) was spectacular! It was so good I stopped by again on the day I was leaving town. Couldn't imagine a better meal for on the road! The sandwich on a roll is plenty big for one person. The sub size would easily feed 2, maybe 3. Also sampled some pastries. The lobster tail., a light and flaky pastry crescent filled with custard, was delicious. The lemon bars were bright and citrusy. The sfogliatelle, the same light and flaky pastry baked around ricotta and orange, was like if phyllo and orange cheesecake met and made a baby. So yummy! Be aware, it's a substantial step up to go in the door and space is tight. There may be a line, but they work quickly and it is absolutely worth the wait. A lot of people come to Gloucester with "eat lobster" on their must-do list. I would add "stop at Virgilio's" to that list!

Yelp
i have been coming here for years, their fresh bread is great. I was disappointed the last 2 times, the thickness of the slices meats were not refined. some were really thick, some thin. please go back to uniformly thin!

Gabrielle C.

Yelp
I recently went and had the chicken St Joseph! It was truly delicious. The service is great and really is authentic to the Italian bakery experience. If you are interested definitely visit - there are quite a few goodies to look through while waiting in line. Loved it!

Yelp
I love Virgilio's and so does everyone else. My family has been going here sfor bread since before I was born, but I finally got to try a sandwich while visiting Cape Ann. I got the eggplant special, adding hots as one does, on a roll. My boyfriend got the chicken St. Joseph as a sub. Both were delicious. The eggplant was thin and crisp and the sandwich was flavorful. I almost couldn't finish it. Virgilio's is tiny, but also has a great selection of Italian cooking essentials. Olives, pasta, tomatoes, wine, etc. Which is nice so you don't need to always run to a bigger store. The cannoli looked great and so did the pizza--I'm hoping to try on a return visit. Staff was friendly. There are two tiny tables outside, so this is really a takeout shop. I highly recommend visiting.

Yelp
What a local gem. This shop had a line out the door and now we know why. The inside is arranged as half little grocer and half deli/bakery counter. The staff are friendly and efficient and some of them seem to be truly very Italian :) We ordered two sandwiches and got to enjoy them outside at one of the two sidewalk tables (no seating inside). - chicken cutlet sandwich: a generous piece of chicken! more like a chicken parm cut than a real cutlet, but no complaints as it was juicy and fresh. lots of cheese. I added pickles which I feel was a necessary addition because the sandwich overall was needing some tang. delicious bread and fresh ingredients! the structure of the sandwich was difficult to maintain as it shortly started sliding around and i lost some toppings to the table. - steak cutlet sub: HUGE! i think the move here is to order one sub and split it with someone else. you'll leave full! this was similar ingredients to the chicken cutlet sandwich, but the cutlet on this was extremely thin. i think both cutlets would be best if they were a thickness somewhere in between the two. the bread on the sub was better than the roll - easier to squish down and contain the toppings. If I lived in town, I'd be here every week. I'd take all my visitors and guests here. Make sure you stop in and see why the locals love it so much!

Yelp
Popped over here while staying in a local hotel due to the hype and it did not disappoint. Another local store owner was super hyped about their bacon corn chowder and gave us a bunch of recs haha. We ordered the breakfast sandwich, which had the largest egg I'd ever seen. It was pretty skimpy with bacon and I'd probably prefer a different type of bread vs the sesame bun it comes with but they didn't offer other options. A steal for the price and maybe the sausage would have been the move. Loved the wedding cookies though and received some high recommendations for the subs!

Yelp
They've gone way downhill. Grew up in Glo. This place couldn't be beat. Moved back in2015, was still great. Moved away in 2020 but have many customers here so I still stop in often. They have gone SO far downhill, I'm ashamed. What happened?! I do think their rainbow cookies are the best, yet their cannoli are like they're from a factory! Worst ever! The only thing still worth purchasing is a loaf of bread.

Kassidi D.

Yelp
"The bread makes the sandwich" they were not kidding here the bread was perfect. Kept together well with all the meats, sauces & hots. Call ahead order for pick up, fast and always good service! Can never go wrong with a classic Italian, extra pickles, topped with hots... chefs kiss, next level CHECK'EM out Gloucester, Ma

Jeanne M.

Yelp
Virgillo's is family owned and operated. The food is delicious and baked goods are my granddaughter's favorites! I highly recommend

Noah C.

Yelp
Design the perfect Italian sub shop in your mind. That's Virgilios. Whenever I'm visiting home, we go here at least three times. In theory to bring sandwiches to the beach. But we usually eat them in the car outside because the oil and vinegar is essential but can make the bread mushy. Northeaster (veg) and St. Joe's are the go to order. Slice of pizza of the kiddo. There's no table service, unless you're Whoopi Goldberg, who I ran into once being served a slice of pizza at a table.

Kayden J.

Yelp
Virgilio's is a north end like bakery. With killer sandwiches that will make you very full, great homemade pizza and refreshing Italian ice, this bakery is great. The staff inside are super kind. They have an amazing Saint Joseph's sandwich and a Nanci's Fave. The Italian ice is super refreshing and comes in many different flavors. The pizza also has a great sauce, and cheese. I definitely recommend coming here!

Janice L.

Yelp
Good sandwiches, just not as good as the hyped reviews. Different fillings tasted too much alike. Breads not as tasty as expected.

Jessica H.

Yelp
The food pastrami Reuben was good. The baked goods were super tasty. It's a quaint little place. My pizza was served cold though. Would I come back? Yeah I would and just make sure to ask to heat up my food.

Brittany G.

Yelp
If I could give this place 100 stars I would. I had a "North Ender" sandwich and added a chicken cutlet. I saw someone suggest it in their review of this place and they were not wrong! Probably the best sandwich i've ever had in my life. My sister had a couple square cheese pizza slices and she loved them. We also left with a box of cannolis to share with friends + lobster tails at the suggestion of the lady behind the counter. Everyone here was incredibly kind here and they seemed like they knew their customers on a personal level. It felt very welcoming being there as if it wasn't my first time. Very casual and comfortable. If you're ever vacationing near Gloucester like I was, this is the perfect spot for a memorable lunch!

John S.

Yelp
St Joseph's roll is a family favorite! You can't go wrong with anything on it! The pizza slices are great too

Missy S.

Yelp
Stopped in for lunch on our last day before heading to the airport. What a special place this is! Fantastic deli, bread is so fresh and all the meats are awesome. We had the north ender and the st Joseph's both on rolls. Finished with a cannoli. Not sure if you can get more authentic Italian deli then Virgilios. Staff is so friendly you immediately feel like a local!

Claire L.

Yelp
I love Virgilio's, and I shop there often however I was disappointed to discover that they outsource the packaging of their sauce and I was informed by a friend that they now use cheap seed/soybean oil, not olive oil. Another wonderful product that's now unhealthy and off of my grocery list. I don't understand why people do things like this. Keep the healthy ingredients in the product, people will pay more for them. It seems everyone is trying to cut the cost and skimp on the very ingredients that make these food items popular.

Y S.

Yelp
Wow what a fantastic sandwich "The San Pietro" plus I picked up a nice bottle of olive oil too. I'll be back for sure !

Ruslan W.

Yelp
Stellar food, Stellar service, Stellar prices, Owner came and had a chat while we ate. The whole experience was very memorable. 11/10

William T.

Yelp
Great sandwiches on fresh baked bread. A Gloucester must when you're visiting this great little city!

Monica L.

Yelp
I found this place by doing a search online and am so glad I did my research. The Saint Joseph sandwich with Italian cold cuts, provolone, veggies, hots, oil and oregano was fantastic. I normally would never have eaten an entire sub, but I ate every last morsel of this one. It was that good. The pickles and hot peppers are really what made it. The peppers aren't that hot -- don't be tempted to skip them. It's to-go only, so grab your sandwich and find a parking spot near the water for an amazing picnic!!

Jenny H.

Yelp
Was in the area picking up lobsters and found this place not too far away. It's on a pretty busy metered street but I got lucky and found a spot right by the bakery. Once you enter. There's not much room inside but the workers are very efficient. The girl that helped me was friendly and helpful. After ordering my sub, she had me go wait outside the storefront and a worker would bring your order to the door when it's ready and call out your name. I ordered the Saint Joseph sub. A nice sized portion for just $9! Bread is made in house too. Would def come back to try other options if I'm in the area again.

Charles E.

Yelp
Maximum stars for this place! You can end your walking tour of Main Street with this gem. Everything on the menu is fantastic--I love the meatballs and sauce, the bread, the Italian imports in shiny cans, the Sinatra crooning from a speaker on the street. I don't even mind waiting, because this place is like a living museum of Italian American culture. There are only a couple of tables here, which are shaded and give you a moment to take in the scene, but take out is the norm--and take out extra. We get extra bread, extra tomato sauce in their own packaging. Did I say reasonable prices? This place is the best.

Elle M.

Yelp
Perfect little Italian bakery & sub shop! It smelled of heavenly, fresh baked bread. It had beautiful Italian music playing in the he doorway so I had to stop in. We ordered two subs that were on perfect bread and full of flavor. My favorite thing they sell is the fresh bread candles by Rockport company that capture the smell of the bakery! Great stop in Gloucester!

Kt T.

Yelp
Incredible sandwiches and service. Not from the area but have heard from coworkers about how awesome this place is for quality food. I tried it while working a job in the area years ago. I now make it a point to stop here every time I'm in the area. Highly recommend!

Barbara D.

Yelp
Stopped and got a sandwich to go. Packed with turkey, cheese and all the fixings on a fresh ciabatta bread. So god. Wish we lived closer.

Sandy J.

Yelp
Italian dry goods, pasta, and bakery store in Gloucester. They sold canolis; already prefilled and the lobster tails. My sister is a pastry connoisseur, baking quite a few of them herself, and she raves that despite their slightly aggressive store front person, this was the best cannoli she's ever had in her life. Her only complaint was wishing that the cannolis were filled on the spot instead of prefilled so they didn't soak through the shelling. Ricotta based is the way you want to go with these things to stay authentically Italian. In other words, 5 stars for their Cannoli.

Jen B.

Yelp
Chaotic. Tiny space but good sandwiches for the beach! Try the pizza. Located on a one way street so tough getting to in the busy season. Hots here are HOOOOT.

Karen W.

Yelp
this is the go to place if you want a great italian grinder. The st joseph's is their claim to fame and it didn't disappoint!! All their bread is so fresh ! They had snow crab as a special and it was fabulous! if you are in gloucester- check them out

Christine G.

Yelp
The food is really great, sandwiches are freshly made to order. Nice selection of cookies, and pastries to accompany your meal, along with chips and soda. They also have a selection of groceries, olive oil, fresh bread, etc. Highly recommend. They are short staffed lately so please be patient.

Marin S.

Yelp
Wow!! Incredible, Incredible meal. We got three different subs (recommend spending a few dollars more for a full sub). The no'easter we added prosciutto and the olive salad with pickles had so much flavor. We got a classic st Joseph's, and lastly the special San pietro. The rosemary ham on the San pietro was to die for! The bread with sesame seeds was also incredible.

David R.

Yelp
Great little Italian bakery/sandwich shop. The cookies are amazing. They make and bottle their own sauces. There are a few tables available to eat and enjoy the pastries and sandwiches. Homemade breads are available also. Parking on street only. The girls behind the counter are very polite and helpful. Definitely a good spot to stop call downtown Gloucester. FYI they close at 5 PM so don't wait till after work to come here.

Camden H.

Yelp
Great little bakery/sandwich shop. Super friendly staff and the food was absolutely delicious. We went with two of their signature sandwiches and they were exactly what we were looking for in the sense of classic Italian subs. We got the to counter and saw they had lobster tail pastries and had to try that. Also fantastic. Great shop and will be back.

Sophia H.

Yelp
super busy on a Saturday at 12PM! we waited about 20 minutes and the sandwiches and salad were delicious! long line inside and waited outside

Estella N.

Yelp
You can just tell this place is authentic and delicious! I walked in with the intention of getting just a cannoli, but couldn't resist the other options and I'm glad I got them. I ended up with a lemon Italian ice, a lobster tail, and a cannoli. The Italian ice was so fresh and even had lemon zest. The lobster tail was absolutely perfect- flaky and filled with delicious custard. The cannoli was very good as well and very generous with the ricotta filling. Definitely recommend!

Ma P.

Yelp
Ma from Peabody can't be happier . . . Walked in just before closing and was able to get hand-filled cannolis! They were delicious! Wonderful and extremely nice staff!!! Can't wait to come back!

Kristina I.

Yelp
I'm sorry, I just couldn't. As a New York Italian, I had really high hopes, but my "sub" just wasn't up to snuff. My first cue to run the other way was the cheesy Italian music playing outside (Zooma Zooma Baccala, really?). The bread was way too soft and the sandwich contents left a lot to be desired. We ordered chicken cutlet, mozzarella, and roasted red peppers and did not like it.

Sakura T.

Yelp
Okay. But just based on one sandwich: the North Ender. Read a lot of reviews about how amazing the bread is here. For about $6ish, it's a very generous-sized sandwich. I immediately noticed how heavy the sandwich was right when they handed it to me haha. But it was okay...I think it needed more flavor (maybe more salt? Maybe not enough olive oil?), so I just picked out the inside of the sandwich. They have a beautiful case of Italian pastries, so if I do come back, I will probably just opt for a pastry! Or maybe try a more popular sandwich. Tip: take your sandwich to sit at one of the benches by Pavilion Beach!

Johnny V.

Yelp
Having only heard good things about Virgilio's, I finally decided to head over to the island to try it for myself. I ordered the Italian sub and it was an 11 out of 10. This sandwich was delicious. I will be back soon!!

Payam Z.

Yelp
In operation for almost a century, Virgilio's has has evolved to offer a lot more than the original "Fisherman's Bread". Aside from a select variety of Italian grocery and baked goods, the store features a sandwich counter that serves up some of the most tasty italian-american classics in MA. The eggplant parm and chicken cutlet (of which there are many variations) both come stuffed with toppings encased in very fresh bread. Caprese is also a solid choice here as are any of the assorted salami / cold cut combos. Overall, operating a sandwich shop inside an old school bakery that has been open for almost 100 years is a brilliant idea! Great place to grab lunch before heading to the water.

Li K.

Yelp
This is the Italian bakery of your dreams! Fresh, delicious bread daily and a counter full of iconic Italian cookies and local specialties. The sandwiches are made fresh to order and out of this world. And get a lobster claw - you won't regret it.

Dawn I.

Yelp
This place is a little gem. I had a Reuben sandwich that was the real deal ... so much meat and fresh, delicious bread. My husband had the St. Joseph and our grandson had a slice of cheese pizza. Everyone raved about their sandwiches. The Reuben lasted for two meals since it was so generous. Whoever wrote that the music is cheesy and the bread was too soft is ... well, who thinks bread is too soft?? Try this place for sure! It is a take out place (no chairs inside) but that was fine with us. The pastries look wonderful too but we did not try them.

Tobias P.

Yelp
Unbelievable. As fFesh as it gets folks. Clean, healthy ingredients - sandwiches assembled generously and carefully.

Peter D.

Yelp
Every chance I get to go here I do. Their chicken cutlet is so good. This place always has great service and great food. I would tell everyone that looks this place up it is a must go to for the food. It does not have seating/very limited but they don't need it for you are in Glouster and can go sit by the water and eat. I can't wait to get back and have another sandwich or maybe the pizza..... heck with I will get both and some cannolis.

Joanne J.

Yelp
Great sandwiches! This place has been around forever! I remember buying bread at this place when I was just a kid & I'm 63 now. They are quick with the orders and efficiently more the customers around safely due to Covid. I would highly recommend.

Larry O.

Yelp
This is "the place" for authentic Italian bread in Gloucester. Their terrific sandwiches which feature their bread are the worst kept local secret on Cape Ann. Expect a long lunch line starting at around 11am from June - September. Even the "much too loud" Frank Sinatra music they pipe out onto the sidewalk in a continuous loop all year round doesn't keep people away!

Ellery D.

Yelp
Delicious. Best subs I have ever had. Been back about 25 times. Always the same great taste. They make their own bread and that makes a big difference.

Kyle H.

Yelp
I would recommend this place awesome Saint Joseph On a bulky roll with everything on it and the cannolis are wicked fresh you won't regret going their

Julie T.

Yelp
This place is AWESOME!!! The best breads, sauces, sandwiches, soups, pizza and pastries! I have never had anything less than stellar there. Highly recommend the chicken st Joseph sandwich or west ender. The large sheet pan pizza is great for a crowd, the pasta salad is very tasty snd lobster tails and cannolis are fantastic! The hardest part about eating there is deciding what to order. But I assure you, you can't go wrong--it's all good!
