10 Best Fall Hiking Trails in the U.S. and Canada

"A multiuse corridor better known to cyclists but equally inviting to hikers, this historic former railway route offers long stretches of scenic vistas, wooden bridges, rushing streams, charming small towns and surrounding farmland; it’s highly flexible in length—start in Abingdon for a short outing or make a day of more than 34 miles of trail." - Stacey Lastoe Stacey Lastoe Stacey Lastoe is an Emmy Award-winning editor and journalist who covers travel, food and drink, wellness, and more. What an amazing experience! We did the lower portion and it was stunning. The upper part is closed due to Helene. We really hope it re opens so we can ride it as well. I would encourage people go and give the bike/shuttle companies business and ride the lower part for now, you wont be disappointed!

The 2nd most visited place in the state has been 50% destroyed by hurricane. $60 Million worth of repairs underway. Local towns need people to come and spend $ but are also very nice folks who are working hard. We recommend riding your bikes on the Aberdeen to Damascus run anyway. The area is still gorgeous and the people are the best.

Large parts of the trail are still closed, and the parts I was on - from Whitetop to Green Cove and then then in Damascus - were a little rough. But the trail will be back soon, and much of it is beautiful and shady, great riding on a hot day.

The views along the way are incredible. Tons of rivers and bridges to look at and cross and wildlife to behold. We traveled 17 miles on bikes and loved every minute of it.

Breath taking scenery, well kept, peaceful journey to clear your mind or for exercise. Many different options for everyone in the family. A 34 mile ride for the more fit or people looking for a challenge, a 17 mile ride for your everyday person. They say it’s all down hill but you do have to peddle and use your muscles. If you own a truck you can pick a mile marker and go at a different mile marker. Lovely time I would go again. Rest rooms along the way and local food restaurants are along your travel. Dog friendly also just make sure you keep your fur baby on a lease. Keep it clean by cleaning up after yourself also.

Ride from Damascus to Abingdon and back. Trail is beautiful, love the pieces by the river 8 bridges between the two some great views especially where the rivers converge. A little narrow leaving Damascus but it quickly widens. Cannot wait to go back! Hurricane Helene temporarily shut down the trail to Whitetop.

So much fun! It was a great experience. Gradual descent with some flat parts. Not strenuous at all. We did the 17 mile portion from White-Top to Damascus. Beautiful scenery. Will be talking about this trail for a while.

Best trail to bike for everyone to have a good day! Saw people of all ages out on the trail. If you’re looking for an easy ride where you can easily coast the whole time this is it. There are beautiful bridges along the whole trail and you are surrounded by stunning scenery the whole ride. There are also places along the trail to stop and take a break or grab something to eat.
