I'm new to bouldering and have been making my rounds across the city's climbing gyms, and VITAL has a noticeably different vibe from Brooklyn Boulders where I've been frequenting near home. First of all, it's much newer, and has more of a brighter, more modern feel to the space. Brooklyn Boulders is smaller and well established, and a thriving and warm community that exists there, especially for kids, which makes sense for the neighborhood.
VITAL feels much more adult, with a rooftop bar where you can sometimes catch live music, beautiful views of the city skyline, and even get your climb on during more temperate months. I think both gyms are great, though as someone who doesn't spend a lot of time around kids, I'm partial to VITAL, which is for some reason open 24 hours. I've wondered who is climbing at 3am, but after surveying many of my friends who are members it turns out I might be the odd one out in that regard. Because it has more of an explicitly adult crowd, it can feel more like a scene, which can be either good or bad depending on who you are.
Though it feels quite wide open and expansive, it's a popular gym and can get extremely crowded. So even if it's considered a beginner friendly gym, beginners like myself may feel intimidated by all the people hovering around waiting for a turn at whatever boulder you're trying to climb, and jumping off without crashing into anyone can feel hazardous. Also for such a new and clean gym, I found the bathrooms to be gross, which may simply be a result of having so many people at the gym at once.
I do like that VITAL goes beyond just being a climbing gym, with an area with machines, free weights, and barbells, and a full schedule of yoga, aerial, and cycling classes, making this a really well rounded gym and totally worth the $135/month membership fee. If you're lucky enough to have a schedule that allows you to go during off peak hours, climbing at VITAL is a really fun experience.
