Vivenda Dos Palhacos, Majorda, Goa, India - Explore & Book

"Tucked down a coconut-fringed cul-de-sac in the gently-paced village of Majorda is this lovingly-restored Hindu house, fronted by a beautifully-proportioned Portugese manor. It's the creation (and home) of brother-and-sister team Simon and Charlotte Hayward, who are the fourth generation in their family to be brought up in India. Spread over the main buildings are 6 double bedrooms, all with ensuite bathrooms, plus a self-contained cottage and a tented room in the grounds. All are full of dappled charm, cross-cultural history and convivial peace. There's a graceful 12m Grecian pool with wooden sunloungers, and a long talcum-powder beach 10 minutes' walk away (or a short ride in the house's jeep). It's the perfect place to escape the hordes of tourists who throng to Goa, experience village life, enjoy lively conversations round the huge banqueting tables, and make friends with other guests, your solicitous hosts and their cultured Indian circle. Highs Guests enjoy sociable breakfasts in the dappled sunshine around the 22-seater outdoor table; dinners take place by candlelight under vaulting rafters The convivial tales of India and other travels from your charming hosts and their friends/guests make for fascinating evenings There are authentic Goan fittings and carefully-chosen, artful decorations You have an idyllic beach nearby - and a pool on site in case you don't have the energy to stir yourself; both perfect for families This is a real retreat from Goa's tourist hordes, and creates the feeling of being a guest in someone's home Lows Getting to the beach requires a little effort and, once there, you’ll be importuned by enthusiastic hawkers and beach shack owners The surrounding village means it's not as quiet as other places: cocks crow, dogs bark, bells ring and the neighbours have been known to party quite loudly Being enclosed by jungle, there are no far-reaching views" - Cathy Teesdale

Rooms are good! But some basics need to be fixed Such as 1) Room Madras the Bathroom it needs to be covered - May be a glass sky light can be fixed, so no creepy crawling insects, frogs or snakes are able to sneak into the rooms from there. Apart from these the overall ambience is great, the people, take care of vey well and good hosts, the dogs are very friendly both the Basset Hounds. Loved the barbecue night preparations and food over all, the sit outs near the pool nice for a lovely breakfast. The Central hall a great escape from the heat and have a good family time. I and my family had booked the complete place, was a amazing experience with my cousins there.

Beautiful house, with delightful antique and interesting pieces of furniture. But an air of neglect spoils it. Dusty, musty, dirty, even smelly. The walls in the room I stayed in came off in chunks near the door. I'm an animal lover, and thought I would be in heaven here when I read they had two awesome hounds. But was sadly put off by the 'doggy' smell that permeates the place. There is their urine, vomit, etc in random places too. The housekeeping really needs to pull up their socks, and it actually wouldn't take much to shine up this place many notches up.

Located in the peaceful village of Majorda, this property emphatically reflects its colonial heritage. The rooms in the Portuguese era portion of the house take one back to the days of the Raj. Our bedroom was excellent and had a terrace facing the front garden, a very comfortable bed and a sizeable bathroom (with period tub). Breakfast is served around a large communal table and offers Indian and Western options. There is also a good dinner menu. The garden has a pool and is an agreeable spot for relaxing. Staff were extremely friendly and helpful. A word of caution: this property is not ideal for those visitors who dislike dogs!

We planned to stay with Simon and his excellent team for one night while passing through on the Rickshaw run however, it was such a fantastic place we stayed an extra night, the pool, bar, kitchen are all first class. Portuguese villa is exquisite and will definitely come back - well done you guys!

Back after 14 years staying in this beautiful old Portuguese House. Each room is unique & different, all gorgeous. I like Madras with its open air bathroom, I enjoy looking up at the palm trees in the shower, this morning I had chipmunks scampering in the frangipani tree above. The pool is divine, the food delicious & the service & kindness of the staff is fabulous. Being here alone I have been treated with such kindness my heart is bursting. Thank you all so much for another special stay🙏🏼

What a wonderful gem this is - a refurbished colonial Portuguese private house, bought to life by brother and sister team Simon and Charlotte Hayward with real love and attention to detail at every corner. The Hayward storytelling is all around you - and you are made to feel like family from the moment you arrive. |The rooms are all unique and have lovely a/c - we stayed in Konnegar which had a huge double bed and cast iron bathtub - and the staff are always attentive but never invasive. The kitchen doubles up as reception and wonderfully social bar in the evening under a vast cooling fan. The house dogs are great characters and generally in the way wherever you go!|The food is delicious - we ate out most of the time but they always check with you at breakfast - and then the team send you off to visit their favourite eateries within a short distance, usually great value beach restaurants.|They sent a car to collect us from the airport which was a nice touch, only 45 mins away. We then hired a scooter nearby for the week, very cheap at £5 a day, and did our discovering on that, usually combined with relaxation around the pool later in the day. They also had push bikes and even a private tuktuk!|South Goa wasn't very busy, as the season was coming to an end, but it was still 35 degrees every afternoon and not a cloud in the sky. Sometimes it's nicer to be a little back from the beach (5 mins on bike/max 15 minute walk), and Majorda is not particularly busy.|The whole experience is delightful - we were beautifully looked after like old friends. Great value too.

We stayed here 10 years ago and were delighted to go back. A super friendly hotel, management, staff and guests. Lovely to sit round the big table for meals. Excellent food. Good breakfast. The rooms are all different and quirky. The staff very efficient and helpful. Lots of advice and help organising things to do and see. Beautiful beach to walk to, a lift if feeling lazy in the heat. Would love to go back for a third time!

We spent two lovely nights here and wish we had booked a third. Hosts and fellow guests made us feel extremely welcomed and provided lots of travel tips as well as good company. We had one evening meal that was well prepared, but note the menu is more British than Indian . Pool, room and common areas are spacious and inviting.
