Ask a Local: The Perfect Weekend in Sydney, According to Artist Gabrielle Penfold | Condé Nast Traveler

"For Gabrielle, the weekend gets going with a stop at VN Street food. It’s her go-to place after a long day in her studio at her parents’ house or on her way to the studio for lunch. She’ll hang out with a mate who’s also got flexible working hours. 'I go for a lychee freeze,' she says. 'It’s like a frozen coconut slushie. It’s got herbs and refreshing mint, and it cuts through the saltiness of the Vietnamese pho. It’s as authentic as a Vietnamese street restaurant.' Another favorite of Gabrielle’s is the bun cha—noodles and pork meatballs that have been grilled over a charcoal wood fire and drenched in a sweet-salty broth."

Really authentic Vietnamese food. Stumbled across this gem last night and decided to have dinner here with my wife. Food came out fast, it was fresh and so flavourful. Really good value as well. Highly recommended and will now be a regular.

Ordered a grilled lemongrass pork vermicelli with spring roll. I’ve been here 2years ago, was better Sauce are very watery, not much taste at all. Taste like water. Pork are very thin and dry, in small pieces, no lemongrass herbs 🌿 or other spice at all. Not much flavor overall. Sorry to give you a bad review, but it can be much better by giving customers some good ingredients.

Tried VN Street Food and really enjoyed it! The dishes were flavorful, fresh, and felt like true Vietnamese comfort food. Everything was well-cooked and satisfying. I’d rate it 4/5 — definitely a solid spot if you’re craving good, casual Vietnamese food. Would come back to try more dishes!

I recently had the chance to visit VN Street Foods, and I can confidently say it lived up to the hype I’ve been hearing! Tucked away in a cozy spot, this Vietnamese restaurant really delivered a satisfying and memorable dining experience—especially if you’re after authentic flavors with a modern twist. I ordered their bento box, and while I initially thought it might be a smaller portion, it was actually quite filling and well-balanced. Each compartment had something different to enjoy, from tasty grilled meats to fresh salad sides. What really caught me off guard—in the best way—was the soup that came with it. I wasn’t expecting much, but it turned out to be one of the highlights of the meal: flavorful, warm, and comforting, the kind of soup that surprises you with how good it is. I went with my family, and we had a mix of opinions around the table, ranging from 2-star to 4-star ratings in terms of taste. It seems like some dishes may resonate more with certain palates, especially depending on personal spice tolerance or expectations around traditional Vietnamese flavors. That said, everyone found something they enjoyed, and we all agreed the menu looked diverse and inviting, so we’re keen to come back and explore more options. There were several other dishes being served around us that looked absolutely mouthwatering, so we’re already planning a second visit. As for the atmosphere and decor, it’s clear the owners put thought into the vibe. It strikes a nice balance between casual and trendy, with a clean layout, thoughtful design elements, and warm lighting that makes the space feel welcoming and relaxed. Whether you’re catching up with friends, going on a casual date, or just craving good Vietnamese food, it feels like a great spot to hang out. Overall, while some dishes may be hit or miss depending on your preferences, the overall experience was positive, and the food definitely showed promise. Looking forward to coming back and trying more from the menu. If you’re curious about Vietnamese cuisine or just looking for something fresh and flavorful, I’d recommend giving VN Street Foods a try!

My friend and I really loved dining here! I ordered the beef pho ($16.50). It was really delicious. The soup was clear with clean, well-balanced flavours. It was a moreish dish but felt light to eat. My friend ordered crispy chicken with sticky rice ($16.50). I loved that it came with sticky rice and felt that it gave the dish a more authentic, traditional take. The rice was cooked perfectly. It was soft and had a nice chewiness to it. The chicken was also cooked and seasoned well. It was crisp on the outside but remained juicy on the inside. Both serving sizes were big, and we were so full but satisfied afterwards. Prices were also very good. Service was excellent. The restaurant was really busy on the night we went with lines of people waiting outside, yet it moved relatively quickly. Service was efficient, very friendly, and warm. I would highly recommend dining here and look forward to coming back!

Shit busy at the local. Prices are sub 20 for all dishes, speedy service (got our food as we sat down for a few mins - definition of fast food done right). Love this local joint.

We had originally planned to eat from the original pork roll shop — it had been nearly 10 years since our last visit. But as we walked past VN Street Food, which had more Asian diners than any other café or restaurant along the Marrickville strip, it felt only right to stop and try something new. We ordered their signature dish, Bún Chả Hà Nội, along with Bánh Cuốn and Bún Chả (bún thịt nướng). Everything was absolutely delicious. Towards the end of the meal, we noticed the broth leaned a little sweet, but that didn’t stop us — we polished off every bite. When I got home, I told my son he’d be having leftovers because I’d eaten out for lunch. As soon as I mentioned we’d been in Marrickville, he said, “I know where you should have gone.” But when I told him we’d eaten at VN Street Food, he nodded and said, “Good choice — I’ve eaten there a few times. The food’s great!”

You must try the Bun cha if you come here! The pork is delicious, with a flavor similar to Korean-seasoned pork ribs, so I always order extra. The portions are generous. In the past, there weren’t many places to sit and eat, but now you can order your food, grab a seat next to the shop, and wait for it to be brought to you.

Yelp
What shocked me with the menu was how ridiculously cheap the dishes were! The portions were not those insanely small plate-sized ones, but your average for-one-sized plates. It made it so much easier for me to add two more sides to try out, alongside our main dishes. Dishes were categorised under rice paper rolls, sides, rice vermicelli, rice dishes and pho. I ventured out a little on the visit, ordering myself the steam sticky rice with stewed pork belly with egg. Full review: purplecuriosity.wordpress.com/2020/05/10/vn-street-foods/

Yelp
Australians don't use yelp, so don't be fooled: This place is always super crowded. It serves really great Northern Vietnamese cuisine. It's very tasty, my only beef with it was the meat. Northerners have a different seasoning, but it's kind of like how different areas have different seasoning as well in Vietnam. So it just wasn't what I was use to. And I didn't like the seasoning and I won't ever. But, theres plenty of options here and I don't think it's one to avoid even if your family is from the Central or South of Vietnam. And I love the concept of street food. We need more of that. Brining a little bit (the best bits) of Vietnam back to the urban areas is quite refreshing. I wouldn't necessarily come here again, but I would recommend it. My aunt had a problem with the meat as well, but my other two cousins had no complaints. I think it's worth a shot at trying. I also a korean blogger trying this place out: she got like everything. And it looked like she was having a great time.

Yelp
New joint in Marrickville Illawarra road, along the street of many different Vietnamese restaurants. I like the concept of designing your own meal box and only doe $12! You start with picking your rice (brown, white or fried) then the main meat, I got caramelised pork belly and flavoured egg, a veggie side, salad side and a soup. Very good for a quick feed on the go, not much room for eating in but they do home delivery via menu log. There's other dishes on the menu, but went for the meal box as it was easier. The dishes are simple and taste good, I would go for back here again for lunch if I didn't feel like a pork roll.

Yelp
It's refreshing to see Vietnamese Restaurant serving other than the usual Vietnamese staples. I really like the idea of designing your own bento box, but the novelty wears off after a few visits. First, you choose your rice, then choose your meat, vegetables, salad and soup. The food was really nice, all of the elements I've tasted were tasty. Pork Betel Leaf was really nice with the pork wrapped in Betel Leaf, the Caramalised Pork Belly was sweet and full of flavour. The Papaya Salad was sweeter than my usual Papaya Salad, but it's refreshing and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Stir-fried Kangkong with garlic is exactly as described, it was delicious on its own and when combined with other elements. I would've given them 5-star if it wasn't because of the foul smelling bile wafting as we're eating on one uneventful night because of poorly cleaned vomit from previous diner (serviettes with sweeper and dustpan is not how you clean puke with!). Not to make matters worst, they also forgot the Pho I ordered until I reminded them after waiting a long time for the popular Vietnamese noodle soup. It was worth the wait, the broth was full of flavour and it was quickly became my kids' favourite thing to eat! Service was basic and at other occasions my experience has always been pleasant. We've all been there where despite all your effort everything that can go wrong went wrong, definitely understandable, so yes I would still come back!

Yelp
I love the Bún Đu Mm Tôm here, very similar to in Vietnam, but the plate is much bigger. I would recommended this place to all my friends :)
