25 Places Commemorating Women Who Were Ahead of Their Time

"Too beautiful to be duplicated, it is said that the harsh lady of this Renaissance castle had the architect thrown into the moat and left to drown, so that he could never build another one like it. As notable for its art collection as for its ghost stories, Voergaard Castle is located in Drottninglund, in northeastern Denmark. It houses works by Goya, Rubens, and Raphael, as well as furniture belongining to both Louis XIV and Louis XVI. With its oldest part dating back to 1480, this castle with its wide moat and meter-thick walls has had many years to accrue both art pieces and pieces of legend. Besides an infamous dungeon without light, ventilation, or room for a grown man to sit or stand, many of the darker stories surrounding Voergaard Castle have to do with a merciless noblewoman named Ingeborg Skeel. In addition to offing the poor architect, Ingeborg is charged with continual cruelty, all-consuming greed, and thoroughly haunting the grounds – so thoroughly that a priest was called in after her death to perform an exorcism. History, however, presents a more complicated picture. There was indeed a woman named Ingeborg Skeel, who acquired the estate in 1578, when it also received status as a local judicial unit. The highly-enterprising Ingeborg managed the estate herself, which was unusual for her time, and aroused the suspicion of the populace. In addition to accusations of various evil deeds, it was rumored that she was a witch, in a pact with the devil, and any number of other unsavory charges. Ingeborg can’t have been all bad, though – she was certainly a talented businesswoman, and gave back to the community in a number of ways, donating money to the local poor house and erecting both a hospital and school for the people living in nearby Sæby. So, if the reports of a ghostly lady making her way around the castle at night are true, she may not be out to steal souls. She may just want to be sure the finances are still in order." - ATLAS_OBSCURA

A good intact in Renaissance style castle. They give tours, it’s beautiful outside the building and inside there is a lot of history to fin. There are also some artworks from famous painters.

Interesting castle with a chequered history stretching over 5 centuries. Containing lots of French historical furniture, Napoleon’s china set and a Goya, Ruebens and Raphael painting, this is definitely a place worth a detour.

Very interesting tour of the castle 🏰 exciting to hear of the history from beginning of 1500’s and to the present ⭐️ many well kept objects such as paintings and furniture. Especially taken by the leather wallpaper in the golden room from 1750 🤩

An absolute joy to visit and a step back in time. See an old Danish castle with lovely grounds around it and interesting things to view inside. Especially recommended when they have a theme, Christmas, Halloween and Middle Ages are some of the themes I've experienced and they make for a great day!

Beautiful location. We stopped by on a trip to Skagen to have a picnic. Access to the grounds is free. We didn’t go inside as it is tour guide only and we missed the English speaking tour.

It was a nice experience. I would have liked the events outside the castle to last throughout the summer. The rest of the area is very relaxing.

Our tour was given by a local history major from a local University. He gave a spectacular tour, including both historic facts and lore. The castle has many significant artifacts, art collection, dishes once used by Marie Antoinette, and many fun facts from it's long history.

Yelp
Voergaard Castle is one of Denmark 's most beautiful renaissance buildings dating back to 1589. It was renovated and furnished exclusively by its last owner, Count Oberbech-Clausen. It can also be argued that this private foundation "museum" is also a fascinating and extravagant monument to this guy's ego. Voergaard Castle houses Denmark 's largest privately-owned collection of art treasures and antiques, including works by Goya, Rubens and Raphael, as well as Napoleon I´s dinner service and valuable Ming vases. I certainly wasn't expecting this in the middle of Denmark! Although I wouldn't have visited this place on my own (we were on a cruise-based cruise excursion), it was a pretty amazing experience. Our tour (about an hour) and guide were fabulous and really made this place come alive.
