The Artist's Cottage was so delightful. We absolutely loved staying here. The cottage is tiny, so be prepared to be cozy, but it is comfortable, beautiful, warm and lovingly stocked and curated. And the grounds are a spiritual experience. To be able to roam the gardens with your morning beverage or nightcap, taking in all of the beauty and dedication that it entailed, is an experience not to be missed. Be sure to visit the garden though the back gate- it can replenish your soul. And the community that makes up the team here is absolutely genuine and welcoming. And we ate a terrific meal and found many great gifts at the gallery! I am full of gratitude for Ira and his team for creating this beauty and sharing it with us.

Rain, fog, drizzle, and more rain greeted us as we drove up from Hilo. We found Ira Ono, the owner, greeting patrons in the cafe and he was glad to introduce us to our lodgings. The walk around the grounds was exceptional for its art and plantings. Once we got settled and found where we were to park, we went out to the Park for the afternoon. Upon return, we found that we had the entire grounds to ourselves and loved that.||Yes, it is a small property, but all the bits you might need for comfort and food are there. We enjoyed the coffee provided and the fruits and banana bread were delicious. We made good use of the hot tub and the huge shower room, and generally just loved the place. ||The only drawback is the tinyness of the place. We are seniors and climbing over my partner to use the facilities in the night was a challenge. Also, it was clumsy dealing with our luggage, boots, shoes (which we did NOT wear inside), etc., which we needed to dry out often. This is no deal breaker and we'd stay there again given the opportunity.||Cafe, gift shop, grounds, location, etc. excellent.

Wanted to stay close to VNP to visit and do some hiking. Found the artist cottage and it was just as we had seen on Trip Advisor. The 1908 building is tiny but adequate. Small kitchen space to make tea, coffee or simple fare. Sleeping area had queenish sized bed that was comfy enough. Bathroom is oversized and glass looks into garden area of the Artist's cooperative. Don't bring a big suitcase inside as there is no where to open it besides on top of the bed. Coffe and tea provided in the room. There was a yummy loaf of banana bread awaiting us when we checked in and two yogurts in the fridge. We assumed that there would be another set of breakfast food for the second morning but alas there was not. The buffala yogurt was nice but the other Chobani one was over 10 days past it's "eat by" date and was showing some mold so we passed on that one.||||Pluses for this place-quiet, hot tub, and private! If you like quaint and cozy you will enjoy it.

We visited this cottage during our honeymoon and couldn't be happier. It was a very quaint and cozy place. Ira put a lot of care into the details of the place with the luxuriously large shower, the nice selection of teas and coffee and of course, the famous banana bread. Aside from the serenades of birds in the hot tub, the cottage was a quiet and much need respite after a long day of hiking in VNP along the sea trail. The surrounding gardens around the cottage are a picturesque place for a stroll. The dimensions of the cottage are a little snug, but that's the way we liked it and would love to go back one day

Okay, this place if over the top adorable and romantic. If you are a twenty-something honeymooning in Hawaii, stay here. It's great for couples of one person that wants to get away form it all. ||It's a converted large shed with a n added kitchen and luxury bathroom. Really well done. You have private access to the grounds at night after the restaurant and gallery/store close. The grounds re beautiful. Be sure to check out the tree sanctuary. ||You get a 10% discount at the gallery and the restaurant. The restaurant only serves lunch but the food is quite good. ||Ira, the owner, I very nice and a great resource on the area. He knows every thing from the best hiking trails on the volcano the the best organic food store on Maui. It's really worth talking to him.||There are some caveats however. You have any kind of mobility issues at all this place is really not for you. The grounds aren't paves and there are several stairs in the cottage itself. Also the queen size bed is up against the wall. The person next to the wall needs to get in first, out last, and shouldn't need to get up in the middle of the night for any reason. The only way out is over the other person. ||In the winter the place can get very cold. It's very humid and 50 degrees feels much like the high 30's. I couldn't get warm in the place. It does have an electric blanket but could really use a space heater. ||It's a fantastic place for the right people. And if you aren't the people to stay here go to the gallery anyway, have lunch, buy something cool and chat Ira up.

We spent three enjoyable nights here, while visiting with family and touring Hawaii Volcanoes National Park and other natural wonders. Ira's Artist Cottage is perfect for a single or a couple who want a quiet comfortable place to relax after a busy day of touring. The four person outdoor jacuzzi around the corner from the front door of the cottage was very relaxing. Fruit, delicious granola, banana bread, coffee, and a choice of teas provided a good start to each day.||||On the same grounds as the Cottage is the Volcano Garden Arts gallery, filled with a wide variety of local arts and crafts, and Cafe Ono, a great vegetarian restaurant. The entrance to the National Park is just four miles upslope.||||We very much enjoyed our time at the Artist Cottage, and recommend it highly to anyone who wants an authentic local base for exploring Goddess Pele's natural volcanic wonders.

My wife did a great job with this booking. We got in on a cold rainy night. All correspondence and instructions were spot on for directions and access to the unit. The units have a small kitchenette with all required items and utensils to prepare a wide range of meals. One note the kitchenette only has a gas range but no oven not a problem for us but just a note for planning purposes. Nice continental breakfast was provided in the unit with local fruits as well as banana bread. We would definitely stay here again.

Despite 2 days of cold drizzle/rain, we loved having the cottage to call 'home.' It is a cozy renovated shed (yes, the bedroom is tiny and one person sleeps facing a wall), but the convenience of a kitchenette and the huge bathroom were so nice. We were able to dash up each night to Volcano NP to see the crater bubbling in all of its glory, and each morning enjoyed a jacuzzi (before the grounds opened to the public) and saw glorious rainbows each time! It is a little chilly/damp in the cabin, and in retrospect I wished we had asked to use the dryer to dry out the towels each day, but we survived. While we were hiking in the NP during the restaurant hours and did not eat there, we did see it written up in Edible Hawaii (a foodie mag) later in our trip. The store is a find for those who want unique handcrafted gifts - as we traveled later to other islands, I was thankful I had done so much shopping there. Ira Ono, the host, is really the icing on the cake. Friendly, creative, knowledgeable, and talented (his work can be seen in the nearby Volcano Museum), Ira is a personable and generous host and he made our visit extra enjoyable!

Yelp
Spent 3 days there in November 2020. Great location close to volcano national park. The owner clearly put a lot of care into setting up the cottage so that you have everything you need. It was clean and cozy and the private hot tub was amazing! Highly recommend and would definitely stay there again.

Yelp
We stayed one night in the Artist Cottage while visiting Kiluea. It was lovely: comfortable and quiet, charming and welcoming. The cottage itself is wonderful. Small kitchen with fruit and bananna bread waiting for us; coffee, utensils, and fridge for our use; friendly bookshelves and decoration; comfortable bed. The bathroom and shower (separated from the other half of the cottage by a sliding door) are nice too. It shares the grounds with the gallery / gift shop / cafe, but after those close in the evening we had the grounds to ourselves. (Well, Earnest the goat stays too, but off across the yard.) And even with the windows open, we had no trouble with bugs. And lastly, Ira and everyone at the Volcano Garden Arts was welcoming. (The food at the cafe was pretty good too, though it has its own set of reviews; if you stay in Volcano you'll also want to get a meal at Thai Thai.)

Yelp
This cottage is part of the grounds of Volcano Garden Arts--a beautiful garden and art gallery, as well as a cafe! Ira Ono, the owner and director, is a very gracious and welcoming host. We will only stayed here two nights, but enjoyed our short stay. The cottage is perfect for two--with a lovely little kitchen, spacious and beautiful bathroom, and a hot tub! We appreciated the thoughtful touches, like cozy robes and a mattress warmer for the cool nights, fresh banana bread, and 10% discount for shopping in the gallery. The garden is beautiful and full of birds. Each evening we slept with the sound of rain, and awoke to sunshine. During open hours for the gallery and cafe, expect the public to be nearby and enjoying the gardens too--but during closed hours you have the place to yourselves.

Yelp
Ira's artist cottage was an amazing experience. The cotttage and surrounding area is very peaceful and relaxing to say the least with a perfect chill in the air to cool down after hot Hawaiian days. We wish we could trade our bathroom for the cottage bathroom, and throw in the hot tub! We definitely plan to return here next year and strongly recommended that our parents stay here too.

Yelp
Cozy, peaceful. Simple, but very "artfully" done. Everything one needs Plus a little more. People very nice. Very quite. It is a great place for two. Or if you are one and just want a peaceful getaway to relax this would be the spot to stay!!!
